I can’t afford a x470 mobo because here in Chile the hardware is incredibly expensive :( (both motherboards cost around 200 usd here)
Good review Mike. Not a bad looking board. I like the white/silver accents. Also, the RGB can be turned off. My favorite B450 was the MSI Gaming Pro Carbon AC. It overclocked quite well and remained trouble free until I retired it for the X570 ASUS Tuff WiFi. However I didn't really like the UEFI (BIOS) and as you know, I spend a good deal of time messing about in there. I'm much happier with the X570 MSI Unify. It's jet black, has three M.2 slots, and NO RGB.
@@mikesunboxing I'm planning on buying a camera, if I get the promised stimulus check. If that happens, I'll be posting more photos on Twitter than anyone will care to look it.
I'm going to build a PC by next week, I was confused about choosing a motherboard. Mother board - Aorus B450 Elite or Asrock B450 steel legend (In look wise i liked both the motherboard but not Tomahawk it's little bit costlier than other to motherboards) Processor would be Ryzen 3500 and GPU 1660 Super (I won't overclock) This was the build i'm gonna use, After an 4/5 year I'll update to Ryzen 8/12 core processor based on the price drop in future. What would be your suggest for choosing a right motherboard in budget segment...?
If you want a 8/12 cores later on and you're 100% certain that you won't overclock, then it doesn't matter what board you use. They all support it. It's only overclocking that will cause any potential issues. I would really recommend buying a tomahawk tho and spending a day or 2 on overclocking the ryzen that you will be getting. it is very worth it if done right.
in your opinion which mobo bios do your prefer out of AsRock, MSI, Gigabyte and ASUS? When I was shopping around I wanted to initially get this board because of the look and on board rgb but everyone I asked about it told me their bios can be tricky for those who dont really know how to tweak things yet. most people recommended the MSI bios for overclocking and while I do like how simple it was I'm still curious to know if I would've liked this board. Maybe im having bios remorse. oops sorry i meant buyers remorse lol
I bought the msi (mortarl as its universally recommended and i had a good experience with their intel z270 board i had before, but don't see what all the rage is about. Had a few glitches and was wondering if i should have saved some money and gotten the asrock so i guess it can go both ways ;) i think the msi is being recommended due to good vrm at a price point but i wonder what's actually got more polished bios and is better for OC of the basic 6-8 core cpus.
the msi is good for overclocking due to the vrms but as most 2000 and 3000 chips don't really OC past the precision boost speeds it is more for the fun of OC rather than a practical thing.
@@sysakPL i really wish there was a way to try before you buy but i get why thats not possible. I do remember HU's b450 bench lineup and the tomahawk did the best overall for vrm temps. the asrock boards not so much, which is what also turned me away from them but the price to performance is still there when you consider its not as expensive as the tomahawk but instead sits somewhere in between.
@@mikesunboxing Hi mike, and which bios and the software package do you personally like more? Asrock or MSI? And what about reliable behaviour especially when overclocking? There are a few things that piss me off with the mortar, such as if I oc the ram to the point that it doesnct boot i need to pull out the sticks, turn on and off the pc and seat the sticks again. Clear cmos doesnt do it. I find offset vcore setting a bit unpredictable too.
I have this motherboard, and before I get into my point, I want to say this is an amazing board and I fully recommend it. Now, I don't know if this is a RAM problem or MoBo problem, but whenever I try to overclock my RAM JUST 200MHz up to 3200 and 1.35V, it fully blacks out. No matter what I do, nothing shows up until I take out my GPU to access the battery behind it to clear CMOS. Only then, I'm able to use my PC. If you, or anyone can try to help, I would really appreciate it.
@@mikesunboxing yeah, I do use the second and fourth slots, and I don't think it's the actual ram sticks itself, because they're Corsair vengeance ones and they have a good rep. Am I using too low of a voltage?
@@alikadhim3256 Try downloading thaiphoon burner and the DRAM calculator for Ryzen app. Thaiphoon can create an XMP file with the details of your memory chips, which the DRAM calculator can read, and it will output timings and voltages which are optimised for stability or performance on your particular RAM chips, or it will tell you if your memory chips will not be able to reach the frequency you've selected. DRAM chips sold on 3000MHz CL15 kits will often not be able to run at 3200MHz without loosening the timings to CL16, but it depends on the memory die type (e.g. Samsung B, Micron E, etc).
Thinking to buy one. Decent priced at this very moment (90 euro in the Netherlands). For the VRM for the cpu, am I right to assume this is suitable for my Ryzen 7 3700X with it's 65 Watt TDP and no plans for overclocking outside the autosettings of Ryzen Master?
hei mike, what do you prefer for my ryzen 7 3700x b450 steel legend b450 strix-f (bit pricey) b450 aorus pro wifi (has bluetooth and wifi integrated) b450 tomahawk max (most popular board) i don't really do overclocking to much. maybe few extra hertz, also i'm always using aio so watch out that vrm temp. and primarily i'm using this pc for gaming. what do you prefer and why? and also thanks

Hello Mike. Between this and Gaming Plus Max by MSI, which one do you recommend? I see the specs are pretty much on par with each other, with GP Max being $20 cheaper in my country.
@@mikesunboxing thank you! Per your recc, I bought gaming plus max board, and totally satisfied with it. Now all i need is a better ram and cooling for my cpu (its a heatbox) im running AMD R5 3500, 16 gigs of Corsair Value Select 2400mhz, and a 1070 triple fan. Not bad in all games. pretty much satisfied. Thank you for your videos
both have redeeming features, the msi can overclock higher but looks a bit crap the asrock looks great and also has usb c and ARGB so it depends on what is important to you
@@mikesunboxing in that case, I guess it'll be fine as I'm aiming for the ryzen 5 3500 only. Tks for the review, same thing for the zotac 1650 super too (I bought one :D )
Yesterday I was almost conviced to buy this mobo and I was camping for the stock online, suddenly the gigabyte appeared for 76$ and I bought it for no reason, I think the comments about the vrm shit from msi owners on reddit made me do that, today I just buy the steel legend for 100$, gigabyte will be returned. do you think was a good choice? I think this mobo has better sounds and little details that make it a good mobo for low-middle range, btw i'm taking this with ryzen 2600 and rx580 thinking about update to rtx2070 in less than a year or maybe a ryzen 4000 depending of the stats, enough? I'm not in oc, only ram. thanks for the video, great to heard good details and you taking feedback in the comments.
@@rx456 Sorry dude, I don't use the m2 sata, I use the 7mm, but don't worry, if you ask in the reddit forum of the steel legend b450 someone will help you, general pc groups in facebook would work too.
Same as most people: Choose between Steel legend and Tomahawk, have not the intention to overclock (but i hope it will take a good use of the precision boost) and i want in the future upgrade to 3700 or the X version (and also with not the intention to overclock) So what you think? will do any stock ryzen CPU for this motherboard?
But do you think it will be good for only stock speeds CPU,s? Anyway i have plenty of airflow (using now the GA A320M DS2) and have tested the VRM with Battlefield V ultra settings, it do not reach 70c so with the Steel legend i must be very safe.
@@talskatalska4007 The 3700X wouldn't be ideal in this board - even if you don't manually overclock Zen 2, it will tend to run to its limits anyway - but the Steel legend wouldn't be bad either. If you don't care about the I/O features or the aesthetics of the Steel legend (or if you think the Tomahawk looks better) the Tomahawk would probably be the better choice, assuming the boards are similarly priced, but at a £20 difference it's questionable whether it would be worth it. It really depends on your total budget, and on the rest of your build: if your CPU would be bottlenecked anyway, there's not much point in paying extra for a better VRM. You could go for the MSI Gaming Plus (ATX or mATX), which has the same VRM as the Tomahawk (but with a worse VRM heat-sink) and is usually similarly priced to the Steel Legend (or even cheaper, in the case of the mATX version - but this only has 2 RAM slots, and lacks a lot of other I/O features). If you really just need a good VRM and 1 graphics card, and don't care about other features or I/O, you could even consider an ITX board - these tend to have better VRMs for their price due to lower material costs, and because they use integrated power stages, which are smaller, but also better than discrete mosfets (high-end X370/470/570 boards also use integrated power stages). ASRock Fatal1ty and MSI Gaming Plus are both decent (the VRMs are better than the ATX equivalents, because they use integrated power stages), but also usually more expensive, and lacking in other features.
Hello Mike, in my country new cost 135 has almost the same pricea (couple of pounds less) as Asus Rog Strix B450-F Gaming (150 pounds). That's why I asked your opinion about Msi B450M Mortar Titanium, because it costs 88 pounds.
Hi Mike, if I were to install the Ryzen 3rd gen CPU to the Asrock B450 steel legend, would I need a bios flash to make it work or install an older gen cpu? Or can I install the 3rd gen directly with no issue
It depends, the newer stock of this mobo comes ryzen 3000 ready... but there is a possibility that where you buy it from sends out old stock and in that case you would need need a bios update. Also I bought mine off Newegg and it came 3000 ready! One more thing if by chance they send you old stock you can send your mobo to Asrock and they will update the bios for you for free! You can also “order” a bios update kit from AMD that is also free and that will get it to work!
I want to make a cheap htpc with this board and amd r5 5500 Do you think that I can use that processor without updating the bios? right now after 3 years does it come with the latest bios I don't have an old processor for use
look on the motherboard and see what the BIOS version is on the sticker, that will tell you what is supported if you cross reference it with the chip you want to use
Question Mike. Does that V-Color Skywalker Prism RGB lighting effect Synchronize on that ASRock Mobo??? Curious to know if I can adjust them with polychrome sync on that mobo. (The rgb ram behind you). Would be good to know before I make the plunge. Thank you kindly! 👌
I think this and the Tomahawk/Mortar are premium boards, just on B450. Compared to some entry level X570 and X470 this board is a lot better if you don't need PCI-E 4.0. Especially if you wanna build M-ATX you don't have many options right now

So i have question for anyone using this board. I had it for a 9 months now but audio output is considerably lower than my Sabertooth P67 I use sennheiser headphones and on Sabertooth turning up to maximum was never advised. but on Steel legends turning up volume to max is like 50% on Sabertooth. @@mikesunboxing Thanks for pinup maybe someone will found out but it's strange problem. I cant send board to RMA hey its working and how to explain someone hey audio is low on hi end headphones. 3rd gen or do you have to update the bios ?
Very detailed . Good content
Glad you liked it
Good review Mike.
I really need to see some pics of your pc
@@mikesunboxing I'm planning on buying a camera, if I get the promised stimulus check. If that happens, I'll be posting more photos on Twitter than anyone will care to look it.
lol i hope that actually happens.
@@mikesunboxing Me too. Two many people are clambering to see my box. 😂
Lucky you 😉
I'm going to build a PC by next week, I was confused about choosing a motherboard.
Mother board - Aorus B450 Elite or Asrock B450 steel legend (In look wise i liked both the motherboard but not Tomahawk it's little bit costlier than other to motherboards)
Processor would be Ryzen 3500 and GPU 1660 Super (I won't overclock)
This was the build i'm gonna use,
After an 4/5 year I'll update to Ryzen 8/12 core processor based on the price drop in future.
What would be your suggest for choosing a right motherboard in budget segment...?
If you want a 8/12 cores later on and you're 100% certain that you won't overclock, then it doesn't matter what board you use. They all support it. It's only overclocking that will cause any potential issues. I would really recommend buying a tomahawk tho and spending a day or 2 on overclocking the ryzen that you will be getting. it is very worth it if done right.
good advice from randomly interesting
in your opinion which mobo bios do your prefer out of AsRock, MSI, Gigabyte and ASUS?
Are you using the right slots? Use the second and fourth slots and you should be fine
@@mikesunboxing yeah, I do use the second and fourth slots, and I don't think it's the actual ram sticks itself, because they're Corsair vengeance ones and they have a good rep. Am I using too low of a voltage?
what is the actually rating on the ram to begin with?
@@mikesunboxing 3000Mhz and C15 was the rating. I have it set to 1.35V, but obviously when I got it it was much lower, at 2133MHz and 1.25V
Yes totally fine, and a nice little board
hei mike, what do you prefer for my ryzen 7 3700x
b450 steel legend
b450 strix-f (bit pricey)
b450 aorus pro wifi (has bluetooth and wifi integrated)
b450 tomahawk max (most popular board)
i don't really do overclocking to much. maybe few extra hertz, also i'm always using aio so watch out that vrm temp. and primarily i'm using this pc for gaming. what do you prefer and why? and also thanks
at that level i would go with the tomahawk better VRM and will be able to upgrade to higher end later
would you recommend this or Asrock b450m pro4 with AMD Ryzen 5 3600

Hello Mike.
Between this and Gaming Plus Max by MSI, which one do you recommend?
I see the specs are pretty much on par with each other, with GP Max being $20 cheaper in my country.
Gaming plus being $20 cheaper would probably seal the deal for me
@@mikesunboxing thank you!
Thank you for your videos
so this compared to the msi B450 gaming plus max, which is the better option in your opinion?
both have redeeming features, the msi can overclock higher but looks a bit crap the asrock looks great and also has usb c and ARGB so it depends on what is important to you
@@mikesunboxing what about vrm's cooling? I heard somewhere that the one from asrock has pretty high temperature
Higher than the msi but that is with 8 cores or more in an overclock situation
@@mikesunboxing in that case, I guess it'll be fine as I'm aiming for the ryzen 5 3500 only. Tks for the review, same thing for the zotac 1650 super too (I bought one :D )

Thanks, will do!

Steel legend is awesome 😎
Nice board, but a year ago I went for a B550 instead.
Good choice!
Hello Mike, in my country new cost 135 has almost the same pricea (couple of pounds less) as Asus Rog Strix B450-F Gaming (150 pounds). That's why I asked your opinion about Msi B450M Mortar Titanium, because it costs 88 pounds.
mortar titanium has good VRM but lacks features the Strix board is similar to the steel legend except it has no ARGB
You can also “order” a bios update kit from AMD that is also free and that will get it to work!
very well answered by @veeraj jain
I want to make a cheap htpc with this board and amd r5 5500 Do you think that I can use that processor without updating the bios? right now after 3 years does it come with the latest bios I don't have an old processor for use
