I had that problem on an old Ford flathead. The clutch was rusted to the splines. I hung it upside down from the lift and beat on the back of the engine till it separated. I sprayed a lot of WD40 on the clutch.
you really need that core trans.....they are getting more and more scarce. Dump some hydraulic oil down the starter hole. Like a gallon and soak the clutch it is stuck on the splines. this might help get them loose. When you find out how much a core engine costs you will get them apart.
Pretty sure they sell that whole Frame Head brand new if it's the same as the VW Beetle, which it looks like it is, along with the full side floor pans, but you will have to jig up the body to make sure everything fits back together properly after the welding.
Congrats on your 356! I found a 62 356 S90 sitting in a garage several years ago. Unfortunately it’s still sitting in the garage it’s been in since 1979. I have a video of it posted.
@ Nope. The Doctor who owns it bought it in the mid 60’s (second owner) and drove it to college, got married and had a family. He parked it in 1979 and it was a lot to just let me look it at and even do anything with it. Unfortunately, it was pushed back into the garage and left again; that was 2012. The car was original, and I dream of getting to rescue the car but it isn’t realistic as the owner doesn’t care about it to let it sit, but cares just enough to not let it go. Sigh.
Great team work. I did an 1800 stroker in my intermeccanica. 1600 with a 74mm crank. Port matched intake , 8.3 compression, 120 cam= 95 HP. Great set up. the original 356 was 102 HP so you're close, and, you can use a clearanced stock case. Consider!
If the body is coming off anyway, why didn't you start there? Would have solved the problem of getting the engine and transmission out easier. On that note, I love your channel and I love your videos. My first job at 17 in 1980 was at a VW dealer workshop and I've had a lot of Type 1:s, all models of the Type 3:s and 1 Type 4 so the aircooled VW:s have a special place in my heart. Sadly never had the money for a 356, not even a kit... Keep up the good work!
Good plan even if it more work She knows that the car will take a long time to finish. They will do it right but not rush or spend too much money. Looking forward to the progress
Watching you SQUAT on top of the engine... on top of the table lift... while the trans is being beat on with that TINY hammer AND spinning the table... BEST PART!!!!
🇨🇦Yes watched a show on Monday…pretty much been watching daily sometimes 2-3 a day since…awesome seeing family in it…working well together…have shared you with my contacts…🇨🇦later
I am so glad that you are happy with this Porshe replica. To each their own. You are going to need a donor car . Probably a 68. That one is too far gone. I'm a long time VW guy. I Started in 1971 right out of High school. I'm 73 now. I have a home made vw hunting buggy/ tractor. Has a bus transaxle with reduction gears . I'll send you picture
Another legendary ride in the making!! Can't wait to see it when it's finished! It's gonna be friggin badass!! Love you guys 🙌🤘😎 you can work on Lady and my Road Runner anytime 🙌💪time to do some sketchy stuff, do da, do da 😂
Definitely do a turbo kit and a nice and sleek exhaust and you should put a boarded out motor with bigger pistons and rods and just start up from there
Back in the late 80s I bought a Speedster kit car. I bought a good running 72 Beetle donor car and spent the next year working on the chassis and engine.. Life got in the way and I never got it finished and eventually sold it at a loss. Looking back now I should have spent that money on the Bug and had a really nice Beetle. But I sure had many dreams of the fun I was going to have in my Speedster! I hope yours come true!
Lots of 356s were in collisions back in the day. When repaired the front of one may have been mated to the back of another... especially with cabs and speedsters.
The last time i built one, i built a regular 1776 big bore engine after confirming the crankcase, crank and rods were solid, oil pressure was good etc, it turned out way beyond my expectations since i went from 50 hp to around 200 hp. Everything else was left stock besides the clutch and all new seals on the engine and transaxle even the factory beetle exaust. In hindsight i should have installed a proper race pipe on it with a stinger exaust or a glasspack because those little flat 4 boxers sound awesome with a glasspack and tuned exaust. Thats the route id go with your build. Now of course theres always the super v engine or you could do a Subaru in there but you'd likely have to cut up the body to get one in so i would not advise that! Those kits are super rare nowadays and actually quite valuable in good condition.
Looking at it now, you guys should’ve taken the engine apart, alternator shroud carburetor get all that stuff out and you would not have struggled. It’s a beetle motor but in the shorter chassis so I know you guys learned and I learned to strip it apart first and drop it you would’ve saved yourself four hours worth of work, love you guys
I was thinking swap the body to a newer chassis with new suspension and brake technology. Newer engines and overdrive transmissions. Maybe a Miata or if you want to keep the rear engine a boxer.
❤❤❤❤❤❤you guys I was sad when I realized I’m completely forgot about this year concourse in Hilton head. Then I started thinking. Hopefully by next year I’ll have something worth bringing by next year s eventand I have complete faith and Caroline that she’ll have this Porsche running by then.snd we could make a big deal of it and do it right A boy can dream 😂😂😂😂 anyway I wish you luck on your build in the meantime. Stay safe and I’ll catch you later.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤-Brian G. 🎉🎉
for that well-thought-out cut why not cut it out then put it on a hinge and have a piece of sheet metal as a latch cut the fibreglass up the sides connect the two cuts at the top rivit a hinge at the top then put a latch on the bottom
personally I would fit a 2.0 liter engine from a T3 bus, and from what I can see they shortened the chassis in the wrong place and didn't weld the rear end back on at an angle as it should have been
Get the floor pans done. You and your pops can make that happen. Hard to really see what you saw but from the video they looked pretty bad. Modify the engine you’re putting in, some nice aluminum wheels that look like stealy’s in black and a better looking and sounding exhaust. Btw you guys are awesome!
Do not try and repair that chassis, find another one and shorten, replace the pans and do it right the first time. The time it will take to repair that one and it will not ever be perfect so start over with a clean tunnel.
Basically, you want The Speedle engine in that thing to have real fun. Plus, it would be closer to the original 356's later in their evolution. Kit car or not, this is going to be fun. Check with Mustie1, he might have everything. Including tools, engines, cars, kitchen sinks, and anything else! (He might let you pick through his hoard of gold if you're nice.)
I also like my gear wrench tools Caroline especially my mid length 1/4 and 3/8 inch Dr chrome sae and metric socket sets and the 3/8 inch Dr sae and metric shallow and deep 90t ratchet set with two ratchets.. also like my tekton tools as well..
Y'all way more patient than I am! I would have the WD and heat on it in the first 5 minutes! LOL Don't remember the name of the shop but they build high end, high HP, VW motors..would be cool to see it hopped up. Narrow the rear where you could get some wider tires to go along with the extra ponies. Otherwise, just a resto for the rest. Just my $0.02
Love watching you guys, but can I suggest you NEVER use real rawhide, ever ...your dog can choke and die, I work at a vets office in a small town and sadly have seen this happen way too often. A frozen fresh marrow bone will keep her busy for a long time...and it's safe and healthy (as long as you're around to make sure she doesn't break off a piece and swallow that...they are difficult when they are young(ER) always putting things in their mouth....she/he is a beautiful pup. May you have many years together.❤
Would it not be easier buying a better/newer or an un-rusted chassis and cutting that to fit. The repaired 356 would be worth more when finished too. Copart in Spartanburg SC have a 2015 1.8T with rear end damage being auctioned at mo. It’ll have the full interior in it plus better running gear than what’s on the 356 now. I was in the car body trade for 26 years in the UK and worked on loads of rotted VW Beetles and can tell you that the best thing for your 356 is to swap out the chassis with a newer one. I did a search on Google and they are available for not much money. Good luck with the rebuild.👍
Great channel, but but… why not just take the engine lid first off, then the engine before the transmission. (I see that it pretty stuck) Heh, ok you can do it that way too, but why? Loads of things to do. :-) but your channel is great! I love my v-dubs too… But as some mentioned, i would find a better pan with irs rear, or use a earlier one, with swingaxle. Greetings from finland ❤
Wow, decent vehicle my friend. It looks like you could handle this yourself, for a woman. I like the parts of this motor, kinda tricky to use. Great job
Easy take out four seventeen millimeters nuts and bolts drop engine then pull transaxle . So simple i get stressed out watching someone make a easy task hard on themselves
Finally another channel found I can add to my normal watching list. Keep up the great content!
Very cool to see a young lady who has a wall of Hot Wheels and it a very knowledgeable mechanic 😂❤ my 3 daughters are also collectors as well as me.😊❤
I had that problem on an old Ford flathead. The clutch was rusted to the splines. I hung it upside down from the lift and beat on the back of the engine till it separated. I sprayed a lot of WD40 on the clutch.
Such a cool car can't wait to see you take it all the way to your envisioned finished dream ride ❤
you really need that core trans.....they are getting more and more scarce. Dump some hydraulic oil down the starter hole. Like a gallon and soak the clutch it is stuck on the splines. this might help get them loose. When you find out how much a core engine costs you will get them apart.
After seeing that nasty fall last time, I was worried you might catch yourself on the exhaust on the floor, we can't wait to see the progress on this!
Pretty sure they sell that whole Frame Head brand new if it's the same as the VW Beetle, which it looks like it is, along with the full side floor pans, but you will have to jig up the body to make sure everything fits back together properly after the welding.

Consider!
Whatever it takes to get motivated for you. For me, I get motivated to get it done right before trying to drive.
There is a bolt on bug electric conversion kit may do that.
What if you swap the chassis for a different one? Would that be less work overall?
Great video and its going to be awesome when finished 👍

She wants to drive it before she tears it down.
Good plan even if it more work
She knows that the car will take a long time to finish.
They will do it right but not rush or spend too much money. Looking forward to the progress
Love it! I've had a full set of box end Gearwrench from around 02 or 03 (Sears was still around) and they are amazing!
doesnt it take a beetle frame head?? ( bulkhead) they are pretty cheap . i know guys that used a Karmann Ghia pan
Watching you SQUAT on top of the engine... on top of the table lift... while the trans is being beat on with that TINY hammer AND spinning the table... BEST PART!!!!

That was a major effort to get that motor and transaxle out. But was entertaining to watch keep up the great work.

When I worked on VWs, I made sure I had a pry bar, hammer and a fresh can of penetrating fluid. A torch was a bonus.
I can't believe how you got a 356 I've wanted 1 for48 years can't afford I so I bought an un restored karmin ghia instead so jealous happy 4 you

Lots of 356s were in collisions back in the day. When repaired the front of one may have been mated to the back of another... especially with cabs and speedsters.
I restored my 356a back in the 80s and it was more like a 911, structurally. I sold it for 8K in 94’. I now own 3 air-cooled 911s
Great video what watch are you wearing
From the looks of it, the body went on the chassis with the motor already installed. When you build it back, that would be the way to do it
It's a very common way to go about it! 👍
Man that engine and trans fought you guys all the way, what a mission.
The last time i built one, i built a regular 1776 big bore engine after confirming the crankcase, crank and rods were solid, oil pressure was good etc, it turned out way beyond my expectations since i went from 50 hp to around 200 hp. Wicked VW project! Put an aftermarket fabricated frame under it with a big cc engine.
Build it how you want Caroline, it is your dream car! 😊👍🙏🙏

Also, I do wish I had the extra money or I would sponsor your build here😂
2.0 VW turbo out of a 2016 GTI, What’s the displacement in that stock motor?
personally I would fit a 2.0 liter engine from a T3 bus, and from what I can see they shortened the chassis in the wrong place and didn't weld the rear end back on at an angle as it should have been

Question, if u didn't need the core separated right then, why didn't you spray it down and let it sit in the corner for a while??
Pb blaster. Is the rust key 😅
Basically, you want The Speedle engine in that thing to have real fun. Plus, it would be closer to the original 356's later in their evolution. Kit car or not, this is going to be fun. The classic VW 70s gear shifter nice.
Is this is kit car that used the bug?
yes!
loving the Build... Dump a 3L Type4T in it... Would make it a Little Rocket
I also like my gear wrench tools Caroline especially my mid length 1/4 and 3/8 inch Dr chrome sae and metric socket sets and the 3/8 inch Dr sae and metric shallow and deep 90t ratchet set with two ratchets.. also like my tekton tools as well..
Always good to have the right tools on hand 👌
You guys should get with a vw club some of the guys know how to get serious power out of those engines
I love it…..nice project…iam watching from Amsterdam 😊
I love your TH-cam channel. I just happened to run across it ❤
Thank you! 🙏
That's not bad. That's pretty frikkin' normal 😂😂😂😂
Shouldn't be too hard a job for you, thanks for sharing, all the best to you and your loved ones
Appreciate that!
That single side cover trans often contains the coveted 388 ring and pinion worth hundreds of dollars. DON’T toss it!
I would have used an engine hoist to lift and get them split apart. 😂❤
Y'all way more patient than I am! I would have the WD and heat on it in the first 5 minutes! That's my favorite Porsche, 356 McDreamy still has one!
finally beautiful with the make up especially with the dirt smear and all lol
Paint the 356 pearl white with a little bit of purple flakes in it
What size engine is it
A Porsche Boxster engine would look nice in there with 6 throttle bodies with the boxster clock binicle on the Dashboard 😊😊😊
Nice project car lm in for the ride.
This body style is great it be fun cute car Time for good rust free donor chassis
Boxer engine? Might be cool...also if your still looking to name it maybe the James Dean or the Farris Bueller?
Love watching you guys, but can I suggest you NEVER use real rawhide, ever ...your dog can choke and die, I work at a vets office in a small town and sadly have seen this happen way too often. Then it's not a 356 is it. It's a resto mod that original people hate.
@@kennethlaw9830it’s a kit car already.
@RobertPirtle-q9g no its not. Its a real Porsche speedster. They are all just a piece of shit Volkswagen back then.
@@kennethlaw9830well she has caps it a kit car like 3 times in this video. A kit car is a kit car
@RobertPirtle-q9g I haven't watched this whole video yet because I'm at work. But when they went and got it she said it wasn't
Is it a beetle or a Porsche. I don't know much about cars but I'm definitely confused lol. Eather way love the channel
It’s a VW based Porsche replica
EH HEM! Where are your safety glasses or better yet - your protective shield
Nice job Caroline.
Chain it to the lift, pick it up and use the motor weight to help .
Oh yeah, drive it right away, Fred Flintstone style 😅
Stuck bolt ? Use a torch. Works every time.
Thanks for the tip! We’ll keep that in mind. 👍
@ BTW love your content 👍🏼❤️
id like to help you with the custom floor pans im a welder and fab by trade
Nice project.
If you want to see the end result ,maby you use the glasses when you are drilling metal.
Would you consider a red interior?
Cool stuff 😎
A little heat goes a long way.
It could definitely do with some Aluminium floor pans (road signs and licence plates) good luck! 😂
Looks like fun.
Great channel, but but… why not just take the engine lid first off, then the engine before the transmission. (I see that it pretty stuck) Heh, ok you can do it that way too, but why? Loads of things to do. :-) but your channel is great! I love my v-dubs too…

Greetings from finland ❤
Get a better early pan, you wanted wide five wheels anyways
Put a VR6 in it and make it 4wd. That would be really cool
Why didn't they use any oil lubricant or some type of blaster to separate the transmission from the motor instead of just hitting it dry
you guys should make it look like the 356 luke perry drove in 90210
1) James Dean tribute
2) Top Gun (1986) tribute
3) 90210 Luke Perry tribute
4) HHW R/C Special Edition 😜
Wow, decent vehicle my friend. It looks like you could handle this yourself, for a woman. I like the parts of this motor, kinda tricky to use. Great job
43:36 Thinking the output shaft is totally seized up.
Look at the movie "King of the Mountain" for inspiration on how to build your 356 speedster.
Easy take out four seventeen millimeters nuts and bolts drop engine then pull transaxle . So simple i get stressed out watching someone make a easy task hard on themselves
You can replace all the rotten bits , i have faith
Easy way is o get it out is push the clutch pedal and it will push the engine backwards trust me it works
Thanks for the tip!
I suggest searching for another beetle frame in better condition.
You are going to make the car look as beautiful as you are Caroline 😂
Highlander porche 😂😂😂
👍👍🫵🪨❤️ the channel.
Take the hammer away from himm! The clutch splines are stuck, soak it with diesel overnight.
Thanks for the advice 👍
Is it a real 356 or is it a kit car since the dimentions are different. Changing the motor sounds like its not original..just asking.
around 31:20 she did mention it was a kit car.
