Art Brown in the Diamond district Nyc has a wonderful collection of vintage and new DuPont’s and dunhill lighters. Bought a vintage ligne 2 this year for my 20th
I hate to say Jack is incorrect about Rope Lighters. The rope is a piece of slow match and does not need lighter fluid to operate, it is light and simply just glows as an ember until extinguished.
i agree with you just where close to post the same thought i collect rope lighters from the time they where used with a match ... such like match safe /vesta cases combinated with a tinder/rope also cigarette cases they where used in the time 1880 to arround 1910 the rope was used in fact matches where expensive and it was elegant to pas the glowing rope case over to give some one a light. it did changed when . Carl Auer von Welsbach invented the modern flintstone this was the start for the modern gasoline lighters.
@@henriktress2063To add further to your posts ,soldiers would make these lighters from brass bullet casings ,guys in prisons also would make them with an old piece of wood and rope from a mop, they were allowed to purchase wheels and flints in the prison stores . I personally during my service carried a zippo along with a flint match everywhere I went even at sea .
jack - there were 100's of one handed petrol lighter automatic models manufactured before the invention of the liftarm in 1919 by wise & greenwood of London
I`ve seen a Dunhill Rollagas pipe lighter with the flame exiting the front for easier lighting of pipes but apart from one example i can`t see any others, could you confirm whether they make a modified nozzle in order to change a standard Rollagas lighter into a side flame version?
I know this is 10months ago . But to answer your question there is ( was, not sure if they do now ) a diffrent valve needle for a Rollagas . I bought in the 90's a brand new one at duty free and later took it to a tobacconist that service Dunhill and had the conversation done cos back then I smoked pipes. You can also buy them and do it yourself if you know how too.
The IMCorona unique clone from Japan is extremely high quality if anyone is looking for a new pipe lighter. Been using the same one for eight years and it is sweet
Cool video. Love my hobnail dunhill. I use it every day. Not bad for a 50 year old lighter. Would've love to have seen one of the famous aquarium lighters ❤
They are hard to find and very exspensive . I actually own one...sort of...Bought a replica a while back from an artisan on Etsy. the body of mine is made or Resin .
Japan's Im Corona make lighter's that are just as good as the Dunhill. If you don't think so, then ask yourself why Dunhill had Im Corona make the Japanese Dunhill for them. The Japanese Dunhill Slim has the exact operating mechanism as the Im corona pipe Magie. Im corona has continued their quality on the lighters they make today. Not so with Dunhill as they redesigned the new rollagas for cheaper manufacture.
I'm not impressed with his lack of knowledge of Duhill. Dunhill produced lighters for G.I.'s during WW2. With an almost identical variant in Switzerland previous in sterling silver I found at a antique shop in ,Ohio in the 1980s for $10. Gave it to my Big brother for a birthday gift. When I found it, the lighter was flat black from the tarnish. It was a sleeper. Polished up beautifully.and a 1930's Dunhill with a Rolex watch set in the traditional style new in the Box at a shop in Pacific Palisades, Ca. In1984 for $75. Sweet.
Very cool video, but that one dude is just standing there and out of breath while wiping sweat off his forehead. Like legit is he dying just talking there?
Parker is NOT how Dunhill started. Dunhill was in business long before, and Parker was their brand to sell pipes that did not make their strickt quality controls. Also called seconds. But still fantastic pipes ! Host is sitting in front of 20000 ugly plaid jackets, and wears the same. HAHAHA. The plaid design reminds me of Army mattresses. LAAAARGE Plaid Jacket and Polo shirt ? Hmmmmmmmm

Nice video. Enjoyed hearing the history of those lighters too.
Great to hear Jack sharing his deep knowledge of the history of lighters!! Very cool.
Quick search 12USD in 1939 would be about 262USD today.
Still way cheaper than today's prices.
@@valdikamenarov8630yeah that would cost much more today
Always an interesting and informative video..thank you Mark!!!!!!

Wow I spent so much time writing my comment only to see you say the same thing in such few words 😂
In the movie Blade Runner, Rachael uses a Dunhill to light her cigarette in Tyrells board room when Deckard puts her on the Voight-Campf machine.
Feels like an episode of antiques road show and the guy is trying to get some big bucks 😂

Great work again👍
Jack, are you selling any vintage hammer type short gas ?
Actually the Dunhill Unique was not the first lift arm lighter.

I don't think rope lighters were intended to be used with fluid
The dancer..is it the same on roll royces symbols?
Sally Rand here was a few decades after Eleanor Thornton who was the model that Charles Sykes mused for the "spirit of Ecstasy"
