  • Just a recreational Sunday climb to an oak in my backyard. I'm not a professional climber - just a hobbyist.

    Thank you. Nice video. The Big Shot is a fun tool but it works best on park trees. I have actually changed over to the throw line you are using, by the look of it. My Zinger line was driving me spare.
    Sometimes, when removing pinus radiata that has been planted too close to a house, you simply have to put on your spikes, grab a couple of heavy duty (abrasion resistant) lanyards and climb the tree, so that you can set your (pull and safety) ropes to pull it over with a vehicle after the chainsaw cuts have been made. I am a carpenter but have spent some time working with a friend who is a registered arborist. I do most of our construction site tree clearance.

    There really ain't nothing like being up there on a nice fall day. Being at the top and looking out. Can't hear anything but the wind and birds. It's moments like this that keep me in it

    Thanks for the video. I have been using the Rope Runner Pro for SRT since it came out and really like it. I have been wanting to get a Zig Zag Plus primarily for DdRT and on occasion for SRT. It looks like yours performs very well. I noticed a couple of things in your climb. When I connect the climbing rope to my throwline I always dress the throwline on the last 6 inches or so of the rope and use half hitches to the end of the climbing rope. It basically makes the climbing rope look like a straight extension of the throwline. On occasion, the end of the climbing rope will still get hugn in tight crotches or in sprouts and I can't pull it through. You went down about 18 inches or so and double over the end of your climbing rope. I can see where might be helpful in getting the rope through tight crotches or in sprout growth. I'm going to try this to see how it works for me. Thanks for the idea. I saw that you use a running bowline for your basal knot. You may want to consider adding a yosemite finish to the bowline to insure that the bowline does not come undone if you load and unload the climbing rope. I have never had one come undone but the yosemite finish insures it can not come undone. Great video. Good shot on hitting the camera with your throw bag. Ha. Ha.

      Thanks! Yeah, I've noticed that attaching the climbing line to the throw line like this reduces the amount of getting stuck. If I need to pass through something tight, like a ring an a cambium saver, I will tie it as you described.
      I did actually back up my running bowline, but just cut away from it before you could see it. I guess I should've shown it. Anyway, you can see me untie it at around 4:30.

    So when climbing srt, there really isn't a need for a friction saver? Correct? Great video. I was able to capture the basics of how to climb.

    • @TimoGoesKnots
      @TimoGoesKnots  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, there is and there isn’t. I try to incorporate a friction saver everytime I anchor into a pine tree, which tends to be very pitchy and makes my ropes sticky. At least when using a base anchor, because then the rope is constantly making a small rubbing motion against the limb due to the strecthing of the rope.

      Correct, no friction saver..

    good morning. What is the name of the knot you use to attach the rope?

      To the trunk of the tree you mean? It’s a running bowline.
