How NOT to negative rig a log
A small but tricky removal of a slanted pine tree at a friend's summer cottage in the Finnish Archipelago. Not everything went as planned.

Taking Down a Leaning Birch Tree

I'd been thinking for quite some time about how to remove this birch with a heavy lean towards the neighbour's fence. The solution was somewhat simple. As you might see, I'm not a professional and this is my own yard.

Taking Down Three Spruces
มุมมอง 1.1Kปีที่แล้ว
I'm not a professional climber - I do this for a hobby only. These trees were on my friend's premises and I agreed to help her take them down. I doubled my removal climbing experience in one go - from two to four! Also the biggest single tree that I've cut down so far. That was fun! Since the two trees I was climbing were next to each other, I thought it would be a good idea to set a single can...

    Wow, you did great! Have you been climbing without spurs for a while? When I was in my 30s, I climbed and took down a few trees. Lots of fun, would have liked to do it for a career. I just turned 60, and my son started a tree service a little over a year ago. I've climbed quite a few since then, having the time of my life. My only suggestion would be to not rush for any reason. Generally, mistakes happen when you rush.

    Does spiking up the tree take more energy than SRT/SRS (with ascenders)?

    • @TimoGoesKnots
      @TimoGoesKnots ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, with my crappy technique, I’d say they’re pretty close match in terms of how hard they are. Maybe spiking might actually be a little bit easier, because you don’t need to fight for balance as you need to a bit when climbing a rope.

    Similar work to what I am expecting to do in the spring, several tall pines, a little bit of black walnut, and some maple over our roof. I however need to get my strength up, as my desk job only requires keyboard work. And the grandkids are not heavy enough to need much effort either. As a kid, we would go 50 ft up in the branches of pines (but we weighed so much less!). Good video. Being a hobbyist woodworker and learning this, you have inspired me with hope, that I too can do this.

    • @TimoGoesKnots

      One of the time lapse presets is called Star Trails. It’s actually pretty automatic. Just mount your GoPro on a stand (or something other where it stays still), point towards the stars and press rec. Just keep in mind that if you’re going to let it run for the whole night, you need an external source of power to keep the camera alive. Also, pointing the camera towards north (if you live in the Northern hemisphere) or south (if living on the southern side) might give you more interesting results, because you can see the ”pivot point”, if you will.

  • @John-Chainsaw
    @John-Chainsaw ปีที่แล้ว

    Your saws will cut faster if you don't tighten the chain so much. During operation, the headset heats up and the tension increases even more and it becomes even more difficult for the chainsaw to cut. And apparently you cut down the limiters on the chain a lot if it jumps like that.

    • @TimoGoesKnots
      @TimoGoesKnots ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, ’m almost certain that I’ve filed the rakers down a bit too much. The tension you mentioned though, I’m under the impression that the heat has exactly the opposite effect on it: the chain will stretch up when getting warmer. That’s why it actually says in the manual that one should slacken up the chain a bit after use, to prevent damage when the chain cools down and get’s tighter again.

    • @John-Chainsaw
      @John-Chainsaw ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TimoGoesKnots Try loosening the chain a little next time. You will see that the saw cuts better this way.

    If you are solo rigging, how are you getting your rigging rope back without a ground worker to take the limb off of it? I can see how you did the first one, but how about the limbs that were bowline & half hitch rigged?

    • @TimoGoesKnots
      @TimoGoesKnots ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha! I don’t. I climb down to retrieve it. Well, sometimes I do leave them on a loop so that I can pull the rope through, but then I leave a sling and biner on the ground anyway.
