I'm a nature photographer and got a Mavic Pro to shoot videos of the areas I photograph wildlife to enhance the overall story. So that is what I tell people when asked. If asked about drone spying I explain that the cameras on most drone aren't that much better than the ones on cell phones so you'd have to be very close to actually spy. If the drone is that close you'll be able to hear it. I try to explain that most drone pilots are just try to take pretty pictures and video.
    Thanks for the video.

Hi, just thought I would share. It’s more than just privacy. It’s security! I was flying my Magic Pro Platinum from a public road but above farm land. I was approached (very politely) by the farmer who introduced himself and asked me what I was doing. I was very polite and apologized for any disturbance I had caused and offered to leave immediately. What happened next was cool. We ended up chatting for two hours about life, the universe and everything. We swapped numbers and I offered to demo the drone to him another time. Anyway, the point of my comment, he told me that a BIG problem for rural communities is that criminals are now using drones to check locations of livestock, agricultural equipment and whether people are home or not. They are using drones to plan burglaries. This is not rhetoric! To be perfectly honest, if I owned a farm and me and my neighbors had been broken into, I would blast that drone out of the skies too. Lesson learned. Always introduce yourself to people where possible before and around their property. It’s just good manners and will avoid anyone getting upset.

yeah, like a drone flying around a neighborhood where it is passing multiple properties a second is one thing, if it is flying over a huge lot that is all private property, it does not belong there, parents had some people trespassing on their property looking in the woods and when my parents saw them they said they where looking for there drone they crashed.
area is heavily wooded, and all private, large 100 acre lots in the area so they definitely where up to no good, because they where trying to spy below the tree line if they ended up crashing.
if it is private property and you cannot see it from high up, and you cannot see it from the street, you should not be able to see it with a drone.

Great topic. Now let me ask you a question. ATC at an airport can control the airspace up to 3000 ' and 5 miles out. Do a home owner owns the airspace around his house? I have no problem with drones flying over my house, majority of drones do not have the capabilities of zooming in and the only way to see my face is by hovering right next to me. So, my privacy in this case is not that important to me. But if it comes down in my area below the high of the roof, then I may have a problem with the drone and the operators intention. I have been thinking of buying a drone, but do to so many rules and people that do not understand drones + price, it has steer me away from buying one. Thanks for the info and a video well made!!!

There have been a few incidents of impact between a drone and a manned aircraft but none of them led to a loss of life or crash of those aircraft. One of the few incidents i am aware of is a drone and helicopter impact at the Baja offroad races which required the helicopter to land due to damage to the tail rotor. Helicopters and Drones are the ones most likely to be fighting for the same airspace.

I did a video on Waikiki a year ago of a fireworks display. When I finished, a large crowd circled around me. I asked them all to stand back as my Mavic Pro returned and descended to me. I had it hover about five feet off the ground and let everyone get a good look at it and my screen to show just how “dangerous” they were (NOT). Then sent a lot of pictures to onlookers. I ended up being a very good ambassador for the hobby that night.

Excellent! I've heard the threat several times when just mentioning my Air 2s. Some simply exposing them to what a drone is and the guidance/rules for operating them, satisfied their concerns. Predictably, there were those that only responded to the knowledge they could be prosecuted (besides...it's damage to property of another without concent) Federally, and, even some had to be shown a printed copy of it. This, like many of your other videos I've watched, was excellent.

Hey, Russ! Great video and topic. I don't like to deal with people approaching me while I'm flying, but I've found that inviting them to look at the screen (iPad Mini, in my case), and seeing how little detail is present goes a long ways in reassuring them that you are not spying on them. A lot of times they take an interest after realizing my intentions are good. I also use a self-imposed minimum altitude of 150' AGL when flying over houses or neighborhoods (unless of course it's for a real estate shoot). If they mention shooting at my drone, I've found the phrase "Class A Felony" very effective.
Thanks again for all your contributions to our hobby.

Another great video. I've had several friends who worry about privacy joke about shooting down drones. As I am building my drone services business, my drone flight is almost 100% about commercial work, and I explained to my friends that my flight is about generating revenue. "Invading" their privacy or anyone else's isn't in my interest, as there's no pay for that (yes joking around). When my drone hits the friendly skies it's about my job. Each of them understood and seemed a little more at ease about drones.
Recently I've taken on a new construction client. Their new project is a sizable community build out that butts up against another existing housing community. This past weekend I scouted the location, made a list of close neighbors, and will be notifying them before flying on my client's behalf. Their homes are already experiencing daily construction noise which will be going on for months. Rather that add "drones flying around their homes" as another concern I'm informing them up front about the flights and fact that the drone will not be focused on their properties.

When I got done I checked the footage to see a man come out from around his garage and start cocking an old daisy BB gun. I can only assume he was trying to shoot at me. I follow you and commend you for making this video. However there is still some question as to the FAA's authority over private property. A clear line has yet to be drawn and we only have Causby vs USA to go with. Is it 80ft or 500?. As the air space becomes more and more regulated, one of the last areas we might have the ability to fly freely over is our own private property. Keep up the great videos.

      @MisterMitchMM 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Great comment. The FAA and private property. If you fly a fixed wing aircraft (e.g. Cessna) over, on, within your private property. The FAA still has jurisdiction, and their regulations still apply. However, with a Drone. I honestly have no idea. We here in the U.S. have many "freedoms" but the Government can still do what they wish when determined to do so. All the best. Mitch

Discharging a firearm in the air is more dangerous than any drone...and discharging a firearm in many locales is illegal. However, on the TV show “LivePD” the showed a real police call in Nevada by. Man shooting at a drone. Law enforcement arrived on the initial complaint that a drone was spying on him. He told the cops who it was and they drove over. The drone pilot apologized but said he forgot to fly at a height (cant quote the elevation but I think it was 250ft) which he said Nevada had set to be “free” from “trespassing” below that height the drone would be trespassing. So they left and towards the end of the program they received another call that a man shot down the drone. The darn program ended so never got to see what happened. They were in the desert- I mean this was NOT downtown....but real remote. But the FAA has to do something about “trespassing” or every state will. This is getting worse as time moves forward. Florida State Park systems have adopted new rule...no aircraft may take off or land in a State Park, unless life-threatening situation occurs. I flew my drone in a park - no rules were identified on any brochure or park regulations online. The park ranger was very nice and asked me to not fly again. gain to be clear they disnt ban drones FLYING - just dont take off or land IN THE PARK. He told me they haven’t published/updated their rules as of yet.

Excellent video, I always appreciate your clear insights into some of these difficult topic.
One thing I would add as an important step towards educating the public, is to proactively communicate with people who are likely to be affected (especially neighbors) before you start flying in that area. I learned the hard way, being a bit naive when starting out. A few words of friendly notification to immediate neighbors not only gives them a better understanding of what is going on (you are not spying on them) but typically elicits positive responses. Keep these great posts coming!

Great video Russ, Ive been following you for just over a year and I really enjoy your content. A while back you did a video on hot days and battery performance. I was wondering if you could due one on density altitude / battery performance. ie: Hover time say 100' up and no wind on a high barometric pressure day and the same on a low barometric day. I had a few questions regarding density altitude on my part 107 test but I wonder if it really matters under 400' I'm going to try it in Maine where I live and see what happens. Fall is coming where we see great pressure swings. Anyway, just a thought. Cheers to you....

Russ, great video! You should ask your neighbors what they think about when Amazon delivers your prime products via drone which will happen in the very near future. Will they offer to shoot those down too? 😂😂 In all seriousness, I was at a very popular, Florida resort. I asked security if I could fly my drone to take pictures, not over any people, over a waterfall in a lake setting at around 7 am. I also provided my Part 107 certificate so he knew I was a licensed UAS operator. He said with a very serious face, no you can’t do that because of privacy issues. I said ok, I can respect that but I have only one question for you then. Why is it I can take my cell phone to the pool, like everyone else does, and take pictures and videos to my hearts content of anyone, and that’s not a privacy issue? His jaw dropped and responded that he had never even thought of that. See I wasn’t being smart in anyway. We chatted for a bit I showed him many images and a couple of short videos I took elsewhere and he made note that He couldn’t make out anyones face or even come close to making any specific traits on the persons in the pictures. Then I showed some photos I took at the pool the day prior. You can almost tell the color of the eyes on some. Moral is yes, the media is, as usual, placing fear and dishonesty of the topic to the general population. Has your neighbors ever looked onto a realtor website? They can see their home, with its market value (although not entirely accurate) right there. Have they ever wondered who took those pictures? Certainly wasn’t Russ from 51 Drones! Gee, I wonder which neighbor will be the first to make precedent in the courts for the rest of the commercial and rec industry. Keep up the great work!!!!

This is an incredible topic and thank you for bringing it up! I think that the more education that is available is paramount. I’m not just looking at drones. I live within controlled air space, because of TIA. I would not fly in order to keep the manned aircraft safe! I want people to understand the restrictions that we have to fly within, and respect, to keep the airspace safe. Until earlier this month I would never have put my drone up around my house, because of restricted air space. All video has been done with other cameras, or my drone sitting on a table without props on. I now use LAANC and get permission before I fly any time close to the house, and mostly go up and do sunset and sunrise videos, and then return back straight down. I see people walking down the street as I am taking off or landing, and they may be questioning things, but have not been approached by them yet. I will educate them and show them the recordings so they can be comfortable and not feel intruded upon. As a person to educate them, show them what you are doing and explain why you are doing it, to be a real enthusiast! Make droning a good thing, and be aware that people can get offended, but do what you can to help them understand why you do what you do.

Good video Russ. We have the same issue in Canada with an uninformed public in regards to drones, except we don't have the "shooting down drones" thought process as much because guns are much less prevalent in Canada, but then again we still have the same percentage of gun Morons who ruin it for the responsible gun people. As soon as we convince people the world is not flat, man has landed on the moon, wearing a hat made of aluminum foil will not protect you from an alien invasion, then we can start convincing people that drone operators have no ill intent and it's just a fun hobby.

The system has access to the FAA number as well as drone and control location and some flight data such as height, speed, direction, etc. All of this detail can be viewed on a map in real time and it is also logged for future action, if required. Russ, great discussion topic as always. I was in Hawaii a few months ago flying my Mavic Air. I guy pulls up next to me and says "Hey, you know these guys will shoot your drone down out here". Don't know if he was speaking for himself or someone else. I just gave him a wave and smiled but it can be extremely frustrating as a drone enthusiast to deal with people on a regular basis who clearly dislike drones. You can get some great photos/videos with drones that you just can't get with a camera. A lot of people are positive and stop and ask questions but it just takes that 1 person to ruin the joy of flying. Keep up the great work! Things will really get crazy if they ever legalize droneguns (i.e MkIII)....

Aircraft primary structure and engines are tested to sustain a strike from a 2 kg chicken without major or uncontained failure. Recreational drones are below this weight.
Bird strikes causes expensive damages to the airlines and with exception of the Hudson A320 those bird strikes do not have a signigicant level of danger to commercial airliners.

    Good video!!!
    There are misunderstandings...
We farm, that being said, we don't need people snooping around.
A few years ago, there was a kid flying a drone over one of our pastures. Something for everyone to keep in mind, animals don't necessarily like drones.. livestock, wild game, birds, dogs ..... They are not used to the sound or movement of drones. One of my daughters chased the poor kid down to find out what he was doing and explain the facts of Life to him. He was a nice kid, said he was practicing for an upcoming competition.. ok, he meant no harm, but... What if the cattle would have been in the pasture along the road??? It could have spooked them and caused some serious issues.
Hot air balloons have been a long standing issue.. we had some neighbors years ago, they ran a 500 cow dairy. Picture this... It's a quiet day, all is well, you're enjoying your corn silage and grain for breakfast... Then the sudden blast of the balloons burners!!!
It would be like you enjoying your corn flakes and coffee, when a tree suddenly falls on top of your house. You would freak out!!!
When 500 cows freak out, most of them will be hurt, or worse!
In the end, 200 cows were uninjured, 250 cows required medical treatments by veterinarians for up to two weeks... 50 cows died or had to be put down that day.... One irresponsible balloon pilot directly caused a quarter of a million dollars in damages... Plus about a quarter of a million dollars in lost income because the surviving cows did not milk for some time after.....
Bad timing or area when flying a drone, could very easily cause a similar situation......
    Fly safe and responsible people!!!!
Don't give someone a reason to think you are spying on them...
Don't annoy them with the noise...
Causing issues, will only prompt stricter laws, or bans.

If I'm going to ride my four-wheeler, I'm going to know where property lines are. I'm going to ride my horse, I'm going to know where property lines are. If I'm going to go on a hike, I'm going to know where property lines are. The same goes for flying a drone. Check your local laws. If a drone pilot has a drone over your property at less than 400 ft they are breaking the law. A drone pilot that flies a drone at less than 400 ft over my property is going to need to buy a new drone.

    • @timlubbers2884
      @timlubbers2884 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

1st it's usually against the law for UAVs to fly OVER 400 ft ...
2nd you are breaking federal law if you shoot an aircraft out of the air, at any elevation ...
If it's my UAV, I will be submitting my flight paperwork and video of flight to the FAA for (hopefully) prosecution ...

Great video. I just had watched your video and two hours later was flying on a fairly deserted beach when a woman came out of her house and started yelling at me. She said I was video taping her house and what I was doing was illegal. I was not. I calmly explained I was in uncontrolled airspace and not looking at her house and showed her my screen. She was still incensed, saying what I was doing was creepy surveillance and the next time her husband would come out with his shotgun and shoot the drone down. I explained that's a Federal Offense but she was not deterred. I packed up and when on my way. Bottom line is; I think there are two reactions to a drone. Curiocity and anger, and not much in between.

A lot has to do with attitude and perception. I was once filming a friends house and property practicing for Real Estate videos. A neighbor came to the fence dividing the properties and asked if I was spying on him. This could have gone two ways. I could have had an attitude and basically told him to buzz off I'm not breaking any laws. Instead I walked over to the fence and politely told him what I was doing and showed on the screen that the drone can only see what's out front of it so even the one orbit that went over the edge of his property at about 100 feet never showed his property. At that point he was totally cool with it and said he may even look into buying a drone.
Now depending on where you are and the people involved you may get different results but this approach has worked with every encounter I have had with my drone. Plus like your analogy. I try to be the car that drives by instead of parking in the driveway and taking pictures.

i think if drone is someplace that is not public property, and can safely be shot down (and i mean actually safely) which restricts it to rural area's then you should not be flying it there.
most things you cannot see from normal plane flying height, but if someone lands the plane you can charge them with trespassing, so someone being under that height with a drone should be able to get same charge.

I was hoping you had more information on airspace above your home. As a homeowner with a with many acres, and my nearest neighbor about a quarter mile away, my house is not visible from the road and due to the tree line a drone will be out of line of sight if it were say 100 ft above my home. One would think that of a drone is flying that low, you would have some rights and safely be able to shoot

Great video Russ. It's sad that almost every drone hater I've met all assumed that Drone owners are all peeping Tom's. I use my Mavic Air 2 for recreational use but recently I had to use it when someone asked to cut firewood and was told not to cut down trees to show that trees were cut down. Thus resulting in illegal logging activity. We're in the process of keeping people off our property. I don't fly very often, wish I could, because of conditions going on with COVID-19 and putting in hours at work. I come in when others can't. I would love to spend much time with my drone to create cinematic videos and learn about all it has to offer. I chose the Mavic Air 2 because of its sensors. It would be foolish to fly a drone around here in sport mode because of all the trees. In one of your recent videos about drone flight during an emergency, that's just common sense. But it's good to know. If I'm going to fly my drone over my neighbors property, as a courtesy I would let him know. The drone helps us to see who or what is on our property without us needing to get an ATV and check it out. With some of us getting older and less mobile we can use the drone to communicate and check out who is on our farms.

I had my first "shoot it out of the sky" threat 2 weeks after I started flying mine above my own 1.5 acre yard. I had done all the research, got the TRUST certificate, registered my drone, check to make sure there are no temporary no fly zones (B4Ufly) in our uncontrolled air space and so on. Since they brought a gun out and were acting irrational, screaming at me, would not talk to me rationally or allow me to show them the video which proves I never did fly directly over their house much less right over their deck as they claimed, etc.... I decided it was best to file an incident report in case it becomes a habit with them. Bad thing is the guy claims he knows FAA rules and used to be a pilot. The nice police officer said not to try to engage with them again if it happens but just to call them so they can educate the down-the-road neighbors about the law. The police officer also used the same analogy you did about the cars on the road.

As one who wants to buy a drone for grins and giggles, there is a HUGE body of information out there to wade through. Some good, some REALLY good and some, well, just plain old fashioned BS and it is hard to know what is what.
