      @SpencerJohnsonOfficial  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That’s awesome! Having that higher credit limit will be nice to keep your utilization down. For me with a $3000 limit if I spend the full $500 a month my utilization will be at about 17% which isn’t terrible, but I like to keep my utilization as close to 0 as possible, so I’ll likely ask for a credit limit increase down the line. Congratulations on your new card!

    • @silverandblackentertainment
      @silverandblackentertainment 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@SpencerJohnsonOfficial thank you! Citi is pretty good at giving credit increases. Just use the card, pay off full, and ask for a increase in about 91 days. Honestly I only charge small amounts on my credit cards. About $10.00 on each card every month. I don’t really need credit for financial help. I just need the scores to buy homes and stuff. Financial I’m doing really well. The United States stock market has made me financially free! I basically live off dividends. Put money in the stock market on quality stocks when the market is at lows…. When everyone is afraid and cashing out, that’s when you put money in the market and just wait. Only invest with money that you don’t need right away.

    • @SpencerJohnsonOfficial
      @SpencerJohnsonOfficial  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is really good to know. I don’t plan on making out the $500/month in the 5% category, but I do think it would be nice to have a slightly higher limit in case I do get close here and there. That’s really awesome to hear that you’re financially free in that way, and that’s something I am striving towards! Although since I’m still in college, I have quite a ways to go to get there, but in using the magic of compound interest, I hope to be there myself sooner than average.

    Is Citi Custom Cash worthy sacrificing 5/24 slot or get those Chase trifecta first ?

    • @SpencerJohnsonOfficial
      @SpencerJohnsonOfficial  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Personally, I decided to get the chase trifecta first and then the custom cash filled in my 4th slot. That way I still have the option to get another chase card if I’d like to. I think this card is definitely worth one of the 5 slots as long as you don’t have 5 chase cards you want more, but 24 months is a long time to wait to get another chase card so just keep that in mind! I think the custom cash does a great job of filling in a category where you won’t be getting 5% with your chase cards, so that’s why I went for it personally. Thanks for watching!

    Do you have any recommendations for first time credit card for those who have a full time job and no debt? I want to apply for this card but not sure if i’ll get approved for it being the first. Do most people apply for a secured credit card as their first or can they be approved for unsecured as well?

    • @SpencerJohnsonOfficial
      @SpencerJohnsonOfficial  ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends! If you have absolutely no credit history yet, I generally recommend trying to get the Discover it cash back card first (which you can check if you're preapproved for online with no impact to your credit score). If you can't get preapproved for that one, I generally recommend getting the secured version of that card. If you have some credit history under your belt and have above or near a 700 credit score, you could definitely try for this one. The worst that happens is they say no and you get a hard pull with a very temporary ding to your credit score. Hopefully that helps a bit!

  • @shayshaysays
    @shayshaysays ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you happen to know if they sensitive to collections? I have a medical collection from 2 years ago and Im scared to apply just because of that. I only have 1 hard inquiry and a 700 score.

    • @SpencerJohnsonOfficial
      @SpencerJohnsonOfficial  ปีที่แล้ว

      Since a balance going to collections is technically a derogatory remark, it definitely wont help your chances. The only fear I would have is an automatic denial from their AI, but if that did happen you could call their reconsideration line and explain that away to a real person and maybe they would approve you then! I can’t say for sure whether or not you’d be approved with those data points, but everything other than the account that went to collections is right in line with the recommendations for the custom cash which is great! Sorry that isn’t too much of a help, but I hope that clears things up a little bit.

    • @SpencerJohnsonOfficial
      @SpencerJohnsonOfficial  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Congrats on getting the card! And yes I did complete the sign up bonus. Basically the way it works is once you hit that spending limit on the card, all you have to do is wait until the points are added to your account. They do a good job of telling you in the app as to when you can expect to see those points, but I believe I received mine at the end of the next billing cycle after I completed the welcome spend. And also remember that the $200 cash back is given to you as 20,000 Citi Thank You Points, so it won’t be a direct $200 in cash… you will have to redeem them in whatever way works best for you, but you could always do direct deposit if necessary.

    So I'm thinking of getting the Capital One Savor One rewards card in the next couple days. I'd also like to get this Citi Custom Cash card and use that strictly as my gas card. • @SpencerJohnsonOfficial

      Citi and Cap1 are both pretty inquiry sensitive, so I’d probably recommend checking if you’re preapproved for the Savor One first that way you can be more confident in applying for that one. How do you get such high limits from just starting out? Do u have an authorized user card or just a high income?

    • @SpencerJohnsonOfficial
      @SpencerJohnsonOfficial  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question! I think there are multiple reasons for the higher limit. I’ve actually never been an authorized user, although I would definitely recommend that to anyone who can do that from a young age. However, I was able to start my credit card honey fairly early with the chase freedom student, so I’ve had a couple of years to build my credit with chase which has likely helped. In addition I do work part time in engineering while in school so I have a higher income than most college students from that. Also, if you’re over 18 and receive income from anyone to support you in paying your bills you can include that in your total annual income and since my parents have blessed me by paying for my rent while I’m in school, I have no debt to show to the banks, which I would assume helps me get higher limits since they know I’ll be able to pay my cards off every month. I hope that all made sense! Thanks so much for watching.

      Dang that sucks man. Citi has been really stingy with approvals lately so you’re not alone! I generally recommend you wait as long as it takes for your score to recover back to where it was when you applied (and ideally higher) before you apply again. As for beginner cards, I always recommend people start with Chase as early as they can get approved so you can build out a solid Chase trifecta, but it’s completely up to you as to what lender to start with. I would recommend a Chase freedom card though (Chase Freedom Unlimited for me). Keep in mind they usually recommend around a 700 credit score so you may want to let your score recover a bit. Those are my initial thoughts though!

      Well at least you’re in a great spot over the past 6 months! I think they’re much more sensitive to recent hard inquiries. Citi is one of those lenders that I’m always scared to apply to. You just never know what they’re gonna say. Like for example if you watch Mark Reese’s video on him applying for the Citi Premier, he had many more recent inquiries than us common folk and he was still approved while some people get denied with 1 hard inquiry in the past 6 months. It’s just really hard to tell! At the end of the day, if you applied and got denied it wouldn’t be the end of the world. Another hard inquiry on your account would be annoying, but it’s not gonna destroy you. I would look into some more data points and maybe ask in “The Credit Community” discord Mark Plymale and Daniel Braun have to see what people think about your stats, but at the end of the day if you really want one of them and haven’t applied for a card in a while, it’s worth a shot! As long as you can stomach a denial if it doesn’t work out.

      Generally whenever they give you that message it means that they have to review your application further. It isn’t ideal to not be automatically approved, but it also doesn’t mean you were automatically denied. Sometimes they want to confirm your income or something like that, so generally people will call the reconsideration line to talk to a human and see if they can sway them to approve their application. You can look up the reconsideration number online and call them and ask if they need further information from you to help them with your application. There are a lot of videos on TH-cam that will walk you through what you can say on one of those phone calls but at the end of the day what you’re doing in calling the recon line is talking to a person who will review your application rather than letting the computer system decide for you. Theoretically you have a better chance of being approved by a person rather than a computer, so that is why you’d be calling.
      I hope that helps, but to summarize, my recommendation would be to call Citi’s reconsideration line and see if you can sway their decision by giving them any information they need to approve you. I wish you the best of luck!!

      I would say you’d like to have a 700 and above and a small number of inquiries on your report right now. Ideally you’d want 2 or less just because Citi is sensitive to too many recently opened accounts. However, these are more guidelines than hard rules so it’s a case by case basis!

    • @SpencerJohnsonOfficial
      @SpencerJohnsonOfficial  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's not bad! Since that is your first credit card line, I would likely wait 6-12 months from March before you get another card, but you could always try to get one earlier than that. This Sunday I will actually be posting a video on my most recommended credit card, the Chase Freedom Unlimited. Theoretically since you are already getting 4x back on dining, this may not be the most optimal card for you, but if you like rotating category cards you could always do the Chase Freedom Flex! The thing that I love about the Freedom Unlimited is that it provides you with the ability to always get 1.5% on everything which would be better than your other card. Plus if you use those Chase points for travel in the future when you get a Chase Sapphire card, you can redeem your points for at least 2x as I'll explain in my video. I think getting started with Chase early is really important, so that's always my recommendation. Other people may recommend otherwise, so take their advice into account to! I hope that helps though.

      @@SpencerJohnsonOfficial thanks man love when creators engage with the audience especially this much lol thank you. I know you're supposed to wait 6 or more months before asking for a limit increase and getting another card but I use it so much and the limit is only 1000 so everytime I get close to spending 300 I have to wait and pay it off and use my debit card for a purchase I could be making with that card or another to get more points or cash back so I don't go over 30% utilization really I could just pay it off everyday but thats a bit more work than I'd like but I could do it for a while I suppose

    • @SpencerJohnsonOfficial
      @SpencerJohnsonOfficial  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Of course man! That's what I'm here for. This is what I love to do. And yes while that's the general rule of thumb, it isn't a hard set rule or anything. That time frame generally allows your credit score to build up over a longer period of time since you're so new to credit, but I know that can be hard to wait that long. I would probably hold off on any credit limit increase requests because you could always just get a new card with an even higher credit limit. My recommendation for now would be to pay your balance off early for a month so you only report a 1-2% utilization on your statement, and then if after a month you aren't seeing a big difference in your score, then I would go for a new card. That way you can hopefully get close or pass that 700 mark which is what most lenders look for. Also, that will help you get approved on applications if when they pull your credit report you have a low utilization. I honestly think you could likely get approved for a card right now, but it's better to be safe than sorry!

    what's your FICO score?Can I apply for this card without FICO although I have credit history?

    • @SpencerJohnsonOfficial
      @SpencerJohnsonOfficial  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In applying for this card Citi pulled my credit score as a 775 or so, but my transunion and equifax were hovering between 730-740. However, my experian score was around 705 at the time of application. In general I tend to average around 740 these days, but in applying for this card I would say anything 700 or above gives you a high chance of being approved. I hope that helps! I know it’s confusing as there are different credit scores companies can pull from, but in applying for this card I would recommend that you are above 700. However, you could get approved with a lower score, its just a case by case basis!
      If you don’t believe you have a FICO score, I would download credit karma and see where your scores lie there, and that should give you a pretty good idea as to where you’re sitting. Also, credit karma does a good job of telling you the likelihood of you being approved for certain cards, so you could always look into that in the app as well! In the end, I wouldn’t consider this to be a starter card necessarily, but I do believe they approve most people with a good to excellent credit score.

      @@yechenzhu8534 No problem! That is very interesting that it doesn't show any credit scores for you. There are only 2 reasons off the top of my head that I can think of that may be casing this.
      The first could be that they are waiting for more credit history to build up over the coming months before they assign you an actual score if this is your first credit card.
      The second reason could be if you are using your credit card but paying off all balances before your statement close date. If you were to do that then it would signal to Bank of America that you are not using these cards so they would not be able to produce a credit score for you. Assuming you are using your card and paying it off on or right before your due date but after the statement close date, then I am not sure why you do not have a credit score just yet.
      Here is a link that provides some other reasons you may not have a score yet, but unfortunately I cannot give you a definitive answer. You could possibly try calling Bank of America as well to see why you do not have a score yet. I hope this helps!

      @@yechenzhu8534 @Yechen Zhu That is great to know that you are at least having a few scores show up for you! I should definitely make a video in the future regarding the different credit scores because it can get very confusing.
      The easiest way to think about it is that there are 3 major credit bureaus that credit card lenders report to. Those would be Transunion, Equifax, and Experian. FICO is a separate company that has their own scoring model, but in general, the main 3 listed above should give you a pretty accurate depiction of what your FICO score is as well.
      Now as it comes to the different apps/companies and what scores they use, credit karma will show you your Transunion and Equifax score, and the Chase credit card journey shows your Experian score. To get an idea of your FICO score, I would just average all 3 of those scores and that should suffice. It is odd that BofA hasn't showed you your FICO score now, but if you are curious to see it, you could call them to see why it isn't updating on your account!
      I hope this all makes sense! Let me know if you have any more questions.
