It's an age old question about travel in Australia, should I travel to Sydney or Melbourne? We totally realise Australia has other incredible places to visit for your holiday, don't get us wrong, but given we've recently been to Melbourne and Sydney sharing vlogs it's a question that's popped up often.
The truth is, both Sydney and Melbourne are epic. They're both stunning, easy to travel, amazing food, delish coffee, cool city life and so much more. It all comes down to the kind of vacation you like and the things you like doing, eating and exploring.
So which do you think is better, Sydney or Melbourne? OR would you pick somewhere else in Australia to travel instead??

I'm not from Australia, but I've lived in both cities. Melbourne feels like a "real city", the kind of vibe you get from American movies ( especially those movies set on the North East coast, NY etc ). You can "cosplay" the feeling of those cozy, wintery and rainy romantic movies, with the bars and restaurants and architecture and city skyline all adding to the experience. It has very distinct four seasons, so you can express yourself with seasonal fashion. Art scene and Creativity is great there too. It has more of a European or North East US city feel, but also balances that with a unique Melbourne/Australian feel too, especially with the culture surrounding sport, AFL in particular, so its a great destination for those from Asia ( where i'm from) looking for something different in their region, that feels more "western".
But Sydney is visually spectacular, when I arrived there I knew I was in Australia, 100% picture postcard, uniquely Australian. The landmarks are iconic, the harbor and surrounding beaches are magnificent. The weather is near perfection year round (with only a couple real cold days) . It feels more like a Los Angeles kind of city, mixed with San Francisco- but uniquely Australian. It defiantly has a more superficial and narcissistic vibe to it, compared to Melbourne- more like what I experienced in LA. The beachy/surf/healthy lifestyle in Sydney is really fresh and inspirational, it makes you want to eat healthy and exercise. The nightlife is more glitzy and gaudy is Sydney compared to Melbourne, Melbourne is more "Smokey jazz bar" whereas Sydney is more "great Gadsby" .
Both great cities in their own right, but i'd sum it up as - Melbourne is an artistic, intellectual, introvert and Sydney is a toned, attractive, extrovert. To each their own.
Melbourne is far more pretentious
Melbourne Has more to offer across the board, it's more of city. Sydney can no longer compete, it's the weather that keeps it in the conversation.

I actually think the inverse is true. And here’s why:
Personally I think Melb’s appeal comes largely because of how condensed it all is. Most ‘attractions’ whether that’s the shopping, the coffee, the culture, the restaurants, the nightlife etc- is largely condensed to the CBD and it’s immediate surrounds (Fitzroy, Carlton, St Kilda)… outside of that, there isn’t much more on offer (that you wouldn’t get better within).
Sydney on the other hand, takes far more time and distance and effort to really appreciate the same things. Want the best restaurants? They’re arguably as far flung as 20mins east of the city, and 30mins west (or an hour in between!). The CBD, like in many other LARGER cities like Tokyo and NY, has been way more de-centralised.
I think you can sort of experience most of what Melb has to offer in 2-3days staying in the CBD (“the movie”). With Sydney, you really have to spend time in the Eastern Suburbs, the North, the South and especially the greater West to really understand how Sydney ticks (“the book”). In fact, the CBD has mostly become only for work or tourists. Barely anyone who lives in Sydney actually spends time IN the city. A point that I think is really missed on most people.
On sheer population and size alone, it’s obvious that if you were to say compare ‘top restaurants’, or ‘best bars’- that’s it’s impossible for Sydney lose. They simply have the numbers and size to go toe-to-toe. You’ll just find that where most of Melb’s is so close to each other, most of Sydney’s are so far. It means Melb often presents better to say, a tourist with 2-3 days to visit. 3 days in Sydney and you’ve only scratched the surface.

We are comparing the cities of each state, not 1-2hrs out of the city areas into the East or Western suburbs, that would be a larger comparison of the State of Victoria vs NSW.

Yes there is, Street art, wine bars, roof top bars, laneways, beautiful federation era buildings. But we also have Silo art trails in country regions and of course the beautiful gold rush towns.
And speaking of food. It’s not about how many hatted restaurants you have, it’s about the cultural diversity and experience.
Lygon street for Italian food
Oakleigh for Greek food
Springvale for Vietnamese and the best Pho you ever tasted.
Afghan, Pakistan or Indian food in Dandenong
Middle Eastern in Brunswick
African delights in Flemington and Footscray. I could go on.
In fact, name a country and you could experience their food in Melbourne. Ive done it with a group of friends, from A to Z. You want Danish, Hungarian, Chilean or food from Crimea or Ukraine, come to Melbourne. It’s all here.
And then, we are fortunate enough to be surrounded by some of the best cool climate wines, all within 1 hours drive from the CBD. Yarra valley, Mornington, Bellarine, Macedon, not to mention great Reds out of Heathcote and beautiful Italian varieties out of the King Valley.
And then of course, there are the regular international events all within easy reach of the CBD

I have lived in both Melbourne (2014-18, 2020-22) and Sydney (2018-2020) and for me it's Melbourne hands down, which is why I'm back! Love having four distinct seasons as the vibe changes in the city for each season. An endless calendar of events, the city is alive and buzzing all year. In winter you can rug up and explore the mysterious city bars with fireplaces in hidden laneways. In summer you get out to the parks, gardens and beaches and enjoy drinks and awesome food as the sun sets late in the night (Sydney gets dark too early in summer which was a buzzkill). The only downside to Melbourne's weather is the dreadful hayfever in spring.

Melbourne's parks are full of introduced trees and feral birds. Sydney actually looks like Australia.

Ok.. so I've only been to Sydney but just saying... ferries are like my favorite thing ever. I think Sydney should have gotten some points for those. Being on a ferry on a sunny sparkly day in Sydney Harbour is the best. Can't wait to see the Sydney videos!

I’m a kiwi that lives in Melbourne, I can understand if people find Sydney more appealing for brief holiday visits with the weather and the beaches , that gives it a more holiday vibe . But Melbourne is a more liveable place for me, cheaper and just has a more friendlier vibe , even though it’s still a big city it doesn’t have the rat race feel that Sydney has .
Completely true. Sydney is either for holidays or where you take your bank account to die. (Trust me I’ve seen my own family go down the second road.)
We had an extraorinary time in Sydney - OMG so much to see and do & so very differnt to NZ. Its great to see a video comparing the two as Melbourne is our next plan for Aussie!!!! We feel in love with Uluru & the south coast of NSW & can't wait to do the Great Ocean Road!!!! Thanks for the comments - really excited to go exploring in Melbourne 🙂
We visited Sydney recently and found the public transport stops are really far from some of the major landmarks, meaning we had to walk very far to get to the bus stops/train stations. While in Melbourne, the tram stops are everywhere and you don't have to walk far to get to the next train station.

What are you talking about, train station, trams station and bus stops are right in Circular Quay where the opera house is located. You must be lazy to walk for a short distance to the opera house, and the harbour bridge the most iconic landmarks in Sydney.

I'm a proud Melburnian, but I have to admit that if someone from overseas asked me where to go for a short stay, I would recommend Sydney.
Sydney is just more of a quintessential Australian experience. The weather is better and more consistent, the scenery is on another level (better than almost anywhere tbh), the beaches and harbour are spectacular, and you get to see the iconic landmarks. It is a beautiful, world-class destination - you'll feel as though you really went somewhere special. But on the downside, Sydney is expensive and can be a bit one-dimensional and superficial. And after you've seen the sights, for all the hustle and bustle, it feels a bit empty and dull. Like a mid-sized American city that just happens to be in one of the most spectacular locations on earth.
Melbourne is different. If you were planning to stay for a while, then definitely Melbourne. It is more sophisticated and layered, has way better nightlife and more varied food options, more style, more soul. It's more granular than Sydney, more culturally dense, has more idiosyncrasies and variety. And it's a bit cheaper (still pretty expensive), which is good for people on a budget. But sometimes, I can't believe how truly bad the climate is - endlessly disappointing and always colder and windier than it should be, except when it's horrendously hot. Nine months of gloomy grey (like a slightly warmer London), then like being in a blast furnace on and off for the remaining three months. And geographically/topographically, it's not beautiful like Sydney. It's mostly flat and boring and grey (especially in winter).
Basically, if you're a young traveller coming to Australia for six months, do this - Land in Sydney in October and spend a week or two there taking selfies and absorbing all the "Australiana", then hire a campervan and drive all the way up the coast to Cairns in North Queensland before the rainy season really kicks in. You'll have lots of adventures. Then fly back to Melbourne before Christmas, get yourself a job in a bar and a share house in Fitzroy or Collingwood and stay until the end of March, with the odd trip to other places as needed. You'll have a good time. That's the way to do Australia.
Australia is amazing, it doesn't really matter which city you pick. It's like asking which part of heaven do you want to live.

Funny how you went to an alright gelato in Collingwood and raved about it. Messina is actually from Sydney. You should have gone to Cow & Moon Gelato in Enmore in Sydney - WAAAAY better. Asian food, cakes, everything in Sydney is also way better. Sydney you do have to get around more, which is not hard with the public transport, to real asian out in Cabramatta, Bankstown and Flemington in fact dozens of outer suburbs. Great Indian in Harris Park and Parramatta, Middle Eastern around Punchbowl, Campsie and lots of other places. Japanese and Thai is way better in Sydney.
Not to knock Melbourne which is great, but I think you found stuff in Melbourne simply because it is more obvious and easy to get around.
Sydney best recommendation is take every single ferry, including the RiverCat to Parramatta, and catch the trains up along Broken Bay to the north, Wollongong to the south and Blue Mountains to the west.
Food scene in melbourne is a million times better in Sydney

So I grew up in the outer suburbs of Sydney and I spent more time exploring the blue mountains than going into the city. Yes, there is a lot more walking in terms of distance in Sydney and far less convenient public transport than in Melbourne. There is a lot more to see and do if you have the time to explore outside of Sydney City. visit Bondi, Manly, and the Blue Mountains, hit up any of the local markets, or just head out into the suburbs and see what is there. and if you have time head up the central coast towards Newcastle or down towards Wollongong. both destinations make for great road trips within a few hours of the city (you can also catch the train).
I also really enjoy Melbourne as it is so different from Sydney and am looking forward to going back sometime

You guys have to come back to Melbourne in summer. The weather is comparable to Sydney and the night scene really comes to life in the warmer months. Not to mention all the stunning beaches you missed on the east coast of Victoria. The Mornington Peninsula is littered with great restaurants and wineries and Wilsons Prom is spectacular! Loving your videos, by the way. Heading to Bali in April, so your latest vids have been really helpful :)
Very true - Melbourne in summer is special! It's kind of similar over here how people talk about Wellington being the best on a sunny day, just that there's not enough of them!
@@DanegerAndStacey Wellington actually reminded me of a smaller version of Melbourne quite a lot. The cafes and the restaurants and the general vibe of the place. Everyone was really friendly. I loved it there.
I can only speak to Melbourne since I've basically spent no time in Sydney. I worked security and in the good old days there were many theatres, sports events, night clubs and restaurants bustling away. The grid nature of the Melb CBD makes it easy to get trams which head in all directions. Easy to travel south to the mornington peninsula, Phillip Island or out east to the yarra valley. Also a good road network makes it easy to get to regional cities like Bendigo, Ballarat or down the great ocean road. The weather is shit 8 months of the year.
The blue mountains and Bondi are great. The Harbour Bridge is over rated. I think for an objective assessment you would need to spend at least 3 to 6 months in each place. That would give you an idea of private and public transport, accessibility, entertainment and culture, affordability.
Love the channel. As far as the barking dog goes I have a device that I purchased from my local pet store that make a noise that only the dog can hear that breaks his focus on whatever he is barking at. That combined with a sharp NO has deterred pretty well but dogs are dogs and will often bark for what we think is no reason but I guess that come with the territory of them being able to hear and smell things we can’t.
Sydney is visually stunning - at least around the harbour, coastline and northern beaches but Melbourne is a more interesting place, with lots to do.
Such polarising cities!! I’m from Sydney and I think Melbourne is great to visit but nothing on Sydney! For the food scene, Sydney have some amazing restaurants but ironically they’re literally hidden underground or you have to book 60days in advance. However they are AMAZING! Blue mountains and south coast are both spectacular sights to see too!

BTW Love love love u guyz !!!!! We are Kiwis living Bayside Melbs and its pretty cool. We are 20 mins on train to town but have a wonderful beach at Sandringham and cafe's galore etc at the doorstep. I would HIGHLY recommend going to the Mornington Peninsula next time. There are some cute towns, great cellar doors and cliff top walks. Also there is the sister Hot Springs to Maruia (the one you guys went to in NZ/Lewis Pass) called Peninsula Hot Springs. The access to all sporting events is incredible in Melbourne as it has a wonderful arts scene to. For us we feel it is a mini Wellington and Sydney seems more like Auckland. Although cool in Winter Melbs can be super hot in Summer and having the variety is fun. Happy travels 😃😃😃

What suburbs or towns (well-connected to Melbourne) would you recommend for accommodation for mid-January for a 3-5 months stay? We are looking for a place to disconnect from the buzz of the city and have the chance to easily get to the center whenever we want to.

As a suggestion, if you want to see nicer beaches in Melbourne, try the Southeast part of Port Philip Bay, particularly Brighton Beach, where you can see the Brighton Boxes. The water is also better quality out there than the beaches along Port Melbourne and South Melbourne

You can catch public transport to beaches like Brighton, Sandringham and all the way to Frankston. If you go little further to Blairgowrie and Sorrento you will see some spectacular beach scenery. At least on Melbourne beaches you’re not getting swept out to New Zealand.
I've only been to Melbourne and the Gold Coast. Melbourne is a very relaxed city. People tend to be chill and open to conversations with foreigners. If I could compare it to an American city, it'd probably be a mix between San Diego (atmosphere) and a quaint midwest city where people are generally more friendly than the coastal cities.
Just got back from Australia, and thought Melbourne is easily the best city. With its thriving arts, culture, coffee, food and nightlife scene, it's more of an 'experience' city as compared to Sydney, which revolves around landmarks. As a New Yorker, I also found the uncanny similarities with the grid and boutique cafes. Great comparison video though!

@@zebrakacole5822 I’m actually from NYC, and even if I buy your argument, Sydney does not fall in the top league of cities from any yardstick. NYC and London are operating at another level when it comes to food, culture, attractions, jobs, economy etc.

Sydney is surrounded by nature for bushwalking, fishing, snorkelling, surfing, etc. Melbourne has none of that. It's bleak.

There's no comparison.
Melbourne is Australia's cultural capital with incredible food & drink, sport and festivals/galleries.
But Sydney consistently imports the best of what Melbourne has to offer and layers it with spectacular beaches and wonderful nearby national parks that Melbourne cannot match.
Major global firms are headquartered in Sydney and due to continued global demand, Sydney is soon getting a second international airport - also with rail access (c'mon Melbourne, even Brisbane and Perth's airport have rail links).
It's no secret that Sydney is Australia's seat of power. For 27 of the last 33 years, a Sydneysider has been Australia's Prime Minister. Our first Prime Minister was a Sydneysider and so have the last four of them.
Most importantly, Sydney is Australia's most cosmopolitan and inclusive city. Sydney has something for everyone - whatever your ethnicity, creed, hobbies & interests or proclivities. No matter who you are, you are welcome in Sydney.
Each city in Australia has it's own beauty. Why do we need to compare. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.. What we love is different for everyone. Love Australia as a whole. ♥️♥️🇦🇺

It really depends what you enjoy. I love Melbourne because I am more into shows shopping, restaurants, vibe, etc. also I believe Victoria has stunning scenery but it is not always metropolitan. Grampians. Portlands beaches, walks, skiing, waterskiing, museums, art, . Some of the criteria you used were a little youth orientated and that may be the difference.
haha good points raised, and obviously living in Melbourne I have a bias, so... I'm glad Melbourne won! I've always found Sydney too... mm. hectic is a good way to put it. I like to visit there, but not to stay.
You guys need to check out the amateur shows in melbs, like the Big Hoo Haa, in the butterfly club and go to the AFL!

Definitely Sydney is the best in Australia, I'm from france and i just visited both Sydney and Melbourne and i vote for Sydney 100%. Melbourne is so boring with nothing to do there. A lots of Rude people in Melbourne, Melbourne is not clean as it's in Sydney.

There’s so much that’s good about both of these cities but if I had to pick, it would be Melbourne purely for the fact that the AFL presence is bigger and since the mighty Hawks are from there. But Sydney is still a great city to visit

I’m a bit biased because I live in Melbourne but having spent a lot of time in both places, I’d still vote Melbourne! The food, coffee, bars, things to do, culture and diversity, it’s amazing. I do agree Sydney beaches are lovely, but just travel a little while outside of the CBD to Mornington Peninsula or great ocean road and the beaches are amazing! I sort of get the impression that Sydney-siders are just a bit more fitness and appearance obsessed while Melbourne it’s a bit more about appreciating culture, it’s a bit more hipster and edgy 😅 anyway if you are travelling, of course you have to see both!
Melbourne is very boring city i never seen in my entire life, the city has nothing to do, its public transport is the worsening i never seen before, no attractions just rude people in Melbourne, trains in Melbourne are fake alots of delays and CANCELLATIONS, Brisbane is better than Melbourne. Sydney is Australia's heavyweight city that is to be compared with other world's heavyweight cities not a quite city like Melbourne, where people are struggling getting jobs no jobs in Melbourne with worse weather i never seen before, why are you westing your time trying comparing the father and small cat ? Sydney is the head that carrying Melbourne. Melbourne has tall buildings only in Melbourne CBD, the entire Victoria state has no other tall buildings neither towns that can be compared to nsw. Melbourne has just 5 roads tunnels while Brisbane is ahead of Melbourne with 7 roads tunnels and their daddy ( Sydney) number one with the total of 18 roads tunnels. Melbourne is a small cat to Sydney and they're not to be compared. Sydney is the best and the leader ( head)
Sydney beat Melbourne for everything Melbourne is small and people are very rude there, Melbourne has no attractions, is very boring and public transport of Melbourne is very fake, too much cancellation and delays, you will get late to work on Melbourne public transport. The people are arrogant and I was tired of the people completing with Sydney. It’s everywhere. Go to Sydney and they don’t care about Melb nor do they talk about competing to be better. When you go to Sydney it just feels like it's a mission to get anywhere, long walks to public transport, or you get lost walking around, you might have to go up steep hills, and nothing is central it's all just all over the place.
Melbourne has the grid format, with accessible trams everywhere, everything is centralised (library, sport facilities, arts centre).
Melbourne is a planned city, whereas Sydney sort of developed over time, and it shows.
After being to both, Melbourne is simply the superior city. It is a true "World City". Sydney has some beautiful sights, but Melbourne simply has more to do and see on a regular basis.

I think that officially, Sydney has a slightly higher percentage of residents born overseas. But there wouldn't be much of a difference and both cities are easily among the most diverse and multicultural in the world. I think I recall that there are slightly more people from East Asia in Sydney and more people from Europe and India in Melbourne. Sydney would have more "global citizens" - think highly paid professionals and businesspeople living there temporarily.
Food and vibe melbourne, diversity Sydney, although it is debatable, if you talking about residents born overseas then sydney by like 2 percent but if your talking about different nationalities Melbourne has more.
I know a LOT of people from Sydney who moved down to Melb for work (ans work opportunities) and prefer Melb
I'm biased because I'm a Melburnian but I prefer Melbourne. Sydney has the spectacular harbour, and that's about it in my opinion. Melb has a real atmosphere and the peeople are friendlier. It's so much easier to get around Melb and find somewhere good to eat, and we have a lot more sporting and cultural events. The reason people left rude comments on your previous videos is because some bogans are still angry that we had a huge lockdown during covid and now enjoy bagging Melb haha. Sydney has better beaches and scenery I guess, but Victoria is more compact so it's easier to get to things like the snow in winter. Tourists definitely have to visit Sydney on a trip to Aus as I think they'll be really impressed, but I would want to live in Melb.
So I'm from Melbourne but live in USA, I'm biased. For me it's Melbourne hands down. I've had a lot of Americans ask me about Melbourne and Sydney. I normally put the comparison of Sydney is more like LA, Melbourne is more like New York. I think that's fair?

For sporting events let's not overlook that Melbourne has the Aussie Open, one of the Grand Slams of tennis. On the flipside, I cannot imagine visiting Australia without seeing the Opera House and Harbor Bridge of Sydney. That is like going to California and not seeing the Golden Gate Bridge.
I'm Melbourne resident but i vote for Sydney, Sydney beat Melbourne very much. Here in Melbourne people are struggling to get jobs, public transport is not good in Melbourne, Sydney is the key city of Australia, Sydney win Melbourne.

Great Ocean road is no where near Melbourne, it's 206 Klm from Melbourne, 2 1/2 hours by car. By comparison the Blue Mountains is 100 Klm from Sydney.
Note the ocean temperature along the great Ocean Rd is very cold all year.

They're both good for different reasons. Sydney has better geography with the beaches and Blue Mountains, and a better and more extensive train system. Melbourne has more going on in terms of culture and arts and a better tram system with the free tram zone.

Sydney is ok for a visit. The trouble is it’s as shallow as a birdbath. You scratch the surface and there’s nothing there. Sydney has only 3 things going for it and 2 of those are overrated. The harbour is beautiful.

Sydney tends to be more humid though. 30 degrees in Sydney can actually feel hotter than 35 degrees in Melbourne.
