    In this video, JOM of the Gravel Cyclist crew demonstrates his super simple, safe, and easy to use, Minivan Camping setup for Cyclists. This method involves zero construction of wooden structures that ultimately require you to store them somewhere. Less than convenient.
    Two adults can sleep inside with their bikes, all while retaining excellent MPG properties as this configuration does not rely on a hitch rack. This setup applies to any minivan, provided their rear / centre seats can be removed or stowed.
    The minivan in this video is a 2021 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, "America's Only Plug-In Hybrid Minivan". To date, the ownership experience of this vehicle has been absolutely stellar! See more about this van in the links below.

    I'm looking forward to hearing about your air-conditioning ideas.

    Great ideas! As a ‘beanpole’ type, I’d have to apply the ideas to a bigger Transit-sized van, but it’s definitely a great idea.

    Thanks for posting. Life got in my way for a few months, but I can see clearly now and your videos have always been inspirational for me. I am looking forward to hearing gravel roads crunching under my tires (tyres) again in the next few days. Please keep up your great works for those of us who are mere mortals who enjoy riding for fun. Cheers!

    I use the Ego products at my house. That power station is pretty cool, but just like everything else Ego, expensive. I might give their smaller inverter a try sometime though.

    Minivan owners get it - they are fantastically practical vehicles. No SUV can match it.

      I wish they got better mpg. A lot of hybrids these days are getting 40-60mpg. Even the Ford Maverick can get a 40 highway and 50 city.

    Great video! Love our Pacifica for transporting bikes to races and events. We didn’t get the hybrid as we really wanted the Stow-and-Go seats which are so great. When they can make a 4WD (AWD) plug in hybrid with Stow and Go (and why not 100 mi of electric range!), then that’s the one I want down the road. For a lot of spots (eg non-urban camping), you can probably leave the bikes just outside at the van (with locks) so you don’t have to disassemble. FWIW we get 27-32 in the non-hybrid on most trips.

    I also have a Pacifica Hybrid and car camp for gravel races. Funny to end up back on your channel searching for AC solutions.
    The main battery could run a ton of gear for days but only stays powered for an hour at most (for safety) so I've had to wake up and turn on the AC on hot nights.
    Maybe a fan, an open window, and bug netting or an ice cube powered evap cooler? (it's not too humid here in CO). Still researching...

    Alternative to save money is to buy some moving blankets from harbor freight. Not as stylish but only about $5 each. And fit easily in washing machine.

    Nice setup. Yes, bike carriers do kill gas mileage, especially kind that mounts on a roof.
    It gives me piece of mind to be able to can carry up to 3 bikes inside my vehicle. No worries about loosing a bike via theft, improper mounting to a bike carrier, or entering a parking garage; not to mention having the bikes out of the weather.

      I should make a video and see how many bikes I can fit inside this van, with provision only for the driver and passenger, and just helmet / shoes, etc.

    A very spiffy setup. A have a Ram Promaster City cargo van and have built an adjustable bike rack that sits inside and holds 2 bicycles while allowing enough room to sleep in there as well with a blowup camping style mattrress.

      Nice, I've wondered about those Ram cargo vans. I understand they are automatic transmission only in the USA market?

    Nice and simple, until you want to transition from one mode to another. Then the whole load needs to be shifted (driving to sleeping, sleeping to driving, etc.) The reason for building out a raised bed platform is so you don't have to do all the shifting of stuff.
    Roof racks lose about 10-20% mileage, rear racks only lose 2-5%.

    • @GravelCyclist
      @GravelCyclist  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A small inconvenience, especially when you have a helper. I have no desire to store a raised bed platform in my garage, an absolute waste of space, IMHO. Kudos to those people using such a system. Moving forward, I tested a rear rack on a Gen 3 Prius, the mpg difference (loss) was far more than 2% to 5%, I imagine it all depends on the CDA of the vehicle. All racks expose the bike to the elements, and potential theft. Inside the vehicle is much more secure.

    Cool Van except it’s an expensive hybrid n very expensive to fix when the main battery dies

    • @GravelCyclist
      @GravelCyclist  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      With a 10 year warranty on the battery and related systems. Depending on spec, it can cost less than its non hybrid Pacifica equivalent. The big plus is the potential for a 7.5k tax rebate from the IRS. Some people will qualify, others possibly not.

    With my Honda CRV I can get 33 mpg going to FDR with 2 road bikes on the back
