  • Hey ya'll! Sometimes you just want a certain food or want to cook something and can't find the ingredients you need while living abroad. Should you and can you bring it?

Every time I think about my future move to México I lament all the foods I worry about not being able to get there - good extra old Cheddar cheese, feta, Kalamata olives, maple syrup, (I'm Canadian), pickles, and a bunch of other things. 😅 I joke with my partner that whenever we come to Canada for a visit we'll be stuffing a suitcase full of food.

They have Canadian Maple syrup, Shady Maple Farms Organic brand. I think I have seen Feta , the Mennonite people here sell various cheeses but I’m not sure if they do cheddars. Many don’t understand that food serves many purposes besides nutrition and there is nothing wrong with wanting what you are accustomed to from time to time. Bring your stuff !

@@malikahonthemove Thanks Malika! Good to know that I can get maple syrup there. And maybe feta too. I've had a lot of the Mennonite cheeses in México, including Cheddar, but it's not the same. It had a weird texture and wasn't tangy enough. I like my Cheddar to bite me back! 😄 Lots of great Mennonite cheese there though.
I was thinking about this a few nights ago. In the many, many videos I've been watching by people who have moved to México, people tend to mention food items they haven't been able to find. It prompted me to start a list of my own. I love Méxican food so much, but sometimes you just need a taste of the familiar.

Haven't thought about moving to Merida but this is an extremely helpful video for those looking. When I lived in France I thought I was gonna die without Tony C's creole seasoning, cornmeal (to fry fish) and Noxzema.

      @malikahonthemove  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Noxzema! That brings back memories of my younger self! I didn’t know they still made it.

Eating healthy in Mexico ? Many of the products you promote “ bringing “ should be left in the US … they aren’t healthy.especially BBQ sauce, to make your own is easier and healthier.

I am aware they are not but as I said, “sometimes you want what you want “ and there should be NO judgement from others ! People can do as they please, no one is perfect

They often issue 6 months on the visa . When they ask you how long just say 6 mo and it’s likely you will get it.

You can make buttermilk by using regular milk (whole, skim, 2%) and vinegar. Sometimes I do that when i make cornbread.

I know they use hominy in soups in Mexico, so I'm surprised you they don't have grits. But I guess grits could be more of a southern states thing.

Very Southern yet due to the Great Migration they are also popular in the North as well. It depends on your background I guess.

We find just about everything we want and had back in Texas at La Comer Supermarkets in Mexico and also the largest Texas Supermarket is HEB and has over 90 stores in Mexico too.

I fried some okra using an egg for wet batter and regular flour for the dry batter, I found delicious frozen okra at Soriana.

    Hi Malikah,
    Thanks for sharing.
I found the Mexican brand for corn meal at
Walmart in the international section. The name
is "P.A.N." and it comes in both yellow & white maze.
When I bake with it I use sour cream.
