In the very early 70s, during my hitchhiking days; I found myself in North Charleston, SC. In comparison to what NYC was like, during that same timeline, I considered NC to be a predominantly white safe haven of suburbia- with very low crime rate, that seemed to be cut off from the rest of the world....!!!
