My nickname is Gertrude (after the great lady herself) so of course Munstead Wood was destined to become found in my garden. Put simply it’s a fabulous rose! Here in my garden (in New Zealand) it’s strong and robust - as soon as I saw the the big thorns I knew it would do well.
This is a rose you don’t need to mollycoddle so Gertrude would have given her nod of approval for it to be named after her beloved garden.
Ben, your comment about lack of water causing fungal problems/ black spot intrigues me. Most people over water their roses and this is often the cause of the problem. Too much humidity or a lack of air circulation might be worth considering. If a rose sheds foliage it’s often opening itself up to better airflow and trying to correct the problem itself - they are pretty wise ladies roses, and I wish someone would start to associate roses with wisdom.
I love the thorns! They make it a real rose! When pruning and dead heading I do this without gloves there’s a bit of an art to holding it just gently enough to not get spiked, but I’m sure Munstead Wood has a good giggle when she does get me!
I do agree with you - this is absolutely a beautiful rose! This begins to flower early and flushes right through until early winter.

David Austin need to bring Munsted Wood back urgently. Nothing Like It. Come on DA, sort it out. Munsted Wood is the only one I can smell while I'm smoking my roll-ups when I open the Kitchen Window. I should have bought 9 of them when I could. Why are you doing this DA. Aaaarrrrgggghhhh

Munstead Wood is absolutely my favourite rose. The thorns are worth it for the colour, the shape, the heady fragrance. I drove a round-trip of 7 hours last year to buy two still for sale in NZ, after some maniac bought all 30(!) being sold by my local nursery for a rose hedge. The only nursery with any left was one that didn't do mail order. Well worth the trip.
Sadly NZ has only half of your 2022 top twenty. We might need our own countdown. 😊

David Austin have said that Crown Princess Margarita the lady Emma Hamilton Munstead wood and Darcey Bussell have all been removed to make way for new stronger breeding stocks, we can only hope that the roses coming through in the next few years will be as good as recent additions such as Elizabeth Bring me Sunshine and Gabriel Oak

Thank you for this rose review Ben. I am expecting this rose in February and I am excited to add it to my new landscape. I don’t have any red/crimson color roses in my garden just yet. I have also Darcy Bussel and Heathcliff coming in February. I’m not sure how I should mix this with my mostly apricot/ pink/ lavender/ and creamy yellow/white roses.
Should I plant all the reds in one section of my garden or should I plant them mixed into the other colors of roses?
Thank you so much for inspiring us to give these beautiful roses a try.

@@the_gardenerben Yes, thank you! David Austin roses, unfortunately, were not bred to withstand the eastern Canadian climate (zone 4). To grow them successfully in a short growing season, they need to be bud grafted, unions planted deeply, winter protected and hard pruned in spring because of severe winter damage.
I feel that concerning Austins in general, the breeder focused on producing beautiful flowers but neglected to improve the overall shrub's architecture and disease resistance. This explains why some look better planted in groups as opposed to single specimens. Kordes Roses are far more superior in that regard, currently rivaling Austins, with old flower form on attractive disease resistant shrubs.
Having said that, my favourite Austins are counted in one hand; St. Swithun, William Shakespeare 2000, Molineux, Jude the Obscure, Heritage, Mary Rose and Abraham Darby. Some of these are no longer available.
Munstead Wood could be worth crossing with a recurrent Canadian species hybrid for its sumptuous flower characteristics and fragrance, aiming for a better shrub.
