the imsa/trans-am xr4ti was pretty much the same car for both series....with some major distinctions : the main visual difference was the lack of the signature "cossie wing" on the trans-am car (trans-am rules at the time allowed rear spoilers, but not wings - if i remember correctly the tires were smaller, too), but the big change was under the hood, as imsa gto cars ran something like 200 more horsepower than trans-am and much bigger displacements. in the merkur's case, the imsa engine was a big 600hp 6L naturaly aspirated v8, and the trans-am one was a very angry turbocharged 2.5L with a distinctive chirp. the car in the game is the imsa one.

If I were in a race with the same options, I probably would have also gone for something Tube-Framed with a lot of power. The stockcar probably would be too much of a handful so the 80's/90's IMSA or TransAm stuff makes perfect sense as a choice. I probably would have gone for a modern TA1 car myself, if possible. Unless it was over on Pi.
Valid lap always overrides an invalid lap, even if it’s slower. Could have been that a slow lap or maybe even the first lap was valid but all the full pace laps were not which would cause that
He had enough clean air, no need to push and no draft. So he got away drivin each lap at 2.26. Meanwhile rest of the pack drove their 2.23 once per lap and the rest was 2.29-esque
