A cover I did of Aaron Marshall's tune. Instrument is called a nyckelharpa, a Swedish folk instrument. I do not own the rights. Facebook: / amyhakansonmusic Instagram: / pickleharpa
@@AmyHakanson years later, I come back to listen and it's still better than the original... my god, how this has become a defining song of my personality...
I was literally about to search for this song as I was thinking that I'd not heard it in a while, and it's my favourite Intervals song, and this showed up in my suggested so I had to check it out! You nailed it, absolutely incredible!
I'm becoming a child reading my favorite book whenever i'm listening to this version. It's really telling a story!! I love it!! I'm happy that this kind of version the song existed! Wonderful playing!! 🍺
Wow, this sounds absolutely amazing. And While I do realize this is not gaelic in nature a lot it reminds me what Hiroyuki Sawano did by mixing rock and gaelic folk music to come up with the soundtrack of Fairy Tail
Fairy tail music is the best thing of the show. I really liked the anime when I was younger but had a few years break from it and couldn't stand to watch it long enough to finish afterwards.
I originally saw this because Aaron Marshall shared it on Facebook. I come back from time to time because this instrument blows my mind and fits the song really well.
Way to rock that crazy, ingenious musical instrument, Amy. Pure delight to sit and listen to you make it sing like you do! I've never experienced modern, rock style music produced on a nyckelharpa. Thanks for introducing me to it. I'm hooked!
Wow you are shredding on that nyckelharpa. Didn’t think there would be many other interval fans who were also folk/old time ish musicians. That sympathetic string effect is rad.
Wonderfully, beautifully played Amy. I'm so glad I happened upon your videos. I haven't heard a nyckelharpa played since I returned to America from Northern Germany way back in 1985. Thanks for sharing your masterful talent. You're also an incredibly gifted guitar player. Keep sharing your amazing, uplifting music.
Really amazing work Amy. You add a whole new perspective to these already fantastic prog tunes. I really hope you will colaborate more with them, and that someday i will be lucky enough to hear you live, all together. Cheers !
Does the Samuel Jackson five use this instrument ? Sounds almost tonally identical to the goodbye melody mountain album . They are from Norway so maybe seeing as how it’s a Swedish instrument .
this is a very unique cover.. those strings though i feel like they would snap at me any moment lol.. or maybe its just the angle that makes them look soo thin
It is not the angle, but you are looking at the wrong strings. The thin ones are sympathetic strings below the playing strings. You can see a the playing strings just above each row of plugs. You are not supposed to play on the sympathetic strings, they just add depth to the sound by echoing* the playing strings. * A more scientific explanation would be that the sound waves originating from the playing strings cause the thin sympathetic strings to vibrate.
The best way to buy one is to contact a builder directly. All the instruments are handmade, and most of the builders are in Sweden (Esbjörn Hogmark, Olle Plahn, Sören Åhker, Björn Björn, etc), although there are some in the States (like Earl Holzman) and several in other parts of Europe, like Jean-Claude Condi (France) or Holger Funke (Germany). There are lists of builders, and some other resources, on the American Nyckelharpa Association website (www.nyckelharpa.org/) and the Nyckelharpa Cooperation in Europe website (www.nyckelharpa.eu/). In my experience, a decent nyckelharpa will cost between $2k-7k. A bow will be anywhere from $200-$1000, and you will need a case as well. I also recommend taking a few lessons to get started, as it's surprisingly tricky in some ways and learning on your own might reinforce some bad habits. Those websites might lead you to some potential teachers, and there are also some facebook groups that can lead you in the right direction. There are also different kinds of nyckelharpas, which is important to think about before buying anything. Some builders are starting to build a lot more 4-row, violin tuned instruments, and lower-tuned, larger-bodied instruments called Tenornyckelharpas. Mine was built by Earl Holzman, and it is the standard 3-row, chromatic nyckelharpa designed in the 1920's. On occasion you will see some of the older models, which have much more limited ranges and note choices, with designs dating back to the 1700's. Those older ones are pretty uncommon, and because they have fewer notes they are not as easily applicable to genres other than Swedish folk music.
Amy Hakanson yeah! By the way where did you get your nyckelharpa made? I've been researching the past few weeks and was looking into where to get one. Im in Canada
www.nyckelharpa.org/buy/buying-a-new-nyckelharpa/ If you send me a direct message, here or on facebook, I can give you more info. Depending on where you are in Canada I could hook you up with some folks in the know.
I found this in 2018 and it is still absolutely gorgeous today.
Help, I can't stop listening!
