    This is definitely the best DIY pulley tutorial I've seen. I love the reviews of the different pulleys and the idea about using paracord instead of the coated cable. Well done!

      @@KaizenDIYGym I have the Spud Inc high/low pulley system. It works great and adds so much for such a low cost.

    So when I was researching my materials (which is to say I'm not an expert), a lot of people recommended against Paracord. That 550# static limit is closer to a 110# working limit - I don't know how much this actually ends up mattering, but they also say that knots in the cord further reduce the weight limit. I ended up going with climbing accessory cord (8mm I think), which is rated for almost 4000 pounds, and costs like $15, which gave me 3 pieces long enough for my setup. You need slightly wider pulleys, but those weren't hard to find. You might be able to get away with 6mm and use the same pulleys (looks like 550 Paracord is 4mm).

      @@KaizenDIYGym Great video! I also use 8mm climbing rope instead of Paracord. It's a lite bit elastic but now I’m used to it. I use it with a climbing ascender (Wild Country Ropeman 2) attached to the weight storage pin to set very quickly different lengths of rope. With my setup I have only 1 rope and change it every 2 years with 3 trainings a week.

    • @Rbecker26

      What pulleys are you using with the 8mm cord?

      Honestly just stuff I got at the hardware store or Amazon. They're both metal, not vinyl. I have one U shaped and one V shaped and they both work fine, I don't really notice any difference. They were both in the $10-20 range. Obviously they just need to be big enough to not impede the rope.

    Man I love your videos so much. Home gyms are the best and you're doing such a good job of showing equipment versatility. I stuck to compound lifts when I switched to a home gym. But now I have made most of your stuff for myself, and you've given me more ideas like making a weight sled to drag around my yard. I think people get so caught up in the "everything has to be perfect" they forget that you can just go lift bags of sand in jeans and that will build muscle. Keep it up!

    Tip: instead of paracord, you can go to west marine or another marine shop and get Dyneema line. It’s a type of rope with zero stretch and even higher strength. I use a very thin one like your paracord. It’s essentially like steel but as flexible as paracord. Amazing stuff. Cheap too.

    I started with coated cable and the clamps. After one month, one of the clamps slipped, letting the cable slide through sending 70lbs of weights crashing down. Thank God my legs weren’t under it.
    Immediately swapped out for paracord. It took me five minutes. Kicking myself for not taking your advice a month ago.
    Paracord for the win!

    • @KaizenDIYGym
      @KaizenDIYGym  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m glad you didn’t get hurt. I just released a new video with additional rope options. I did have paracord break while using it with my leg press, so be careful with leading it heavy.

    I have a very similar set up, but have installed band pins which I loop the ties around. Having these at the bottom of the rack as well, allows lying and incline cable flyes. In addition, I have cut and added a short extension cable, which allows me to perform leg extensions and reverse hypers using a bench top rigged between the rack spotter arms (like the one you built for seal rows) using ankle straps. The same set up allows standing leg curls and I'm presently messing with a further pulley that will permit lying leg curls. I'm still waiting for my new jammer arms to arrive, but where i was going to use bands to allow me to do pull down type exercises with them, you have inspired me to look at additional ways to rig them to the pulley system. I'm intending to post a video of it all once I have it all in place.

  • @limitisillusion7
    @limitisillusion7 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I built one of these, pulleys attach to spring collars on both ends of the barbell, cables are about 10 feet long for my rack. I added two more pulleys and tie down straps that gets tied to a j cup that can move the second pulleys up and down the front and back horizontal posts of the rack to hit every angle for seated and standing chest press/crossovers/flys and rows. I'm shocked how versatile it is. Maybe more versatile than an actual functional trainer. Curls, shrugs, tricep pushdowns, facepulls, straight arm pushdowns, and lateral raises can be done with the same setup too. All of those exercises by moving two j cups. That's just what I figured out fooling around last night. I have to do a special setup with only one cable for lat pulldowns. I was going to add the actual lat attachment to my power rack, but no more. I love your videos, but the shorts suck to be honest.

      How do you account for the change in cable length between high, mid, and low positions when moving the J-cups? I'm trying to imagine how to set up a DIY functional trainer on my power rack with a similar set up. Thanks!

    The problem common to most every pulley option is that the lack of a third, "tensioner" pulley on the cable causes the weight to swing. Add a third, tensioner pulley and your rowing work will be surprisingly smooth no matter how fast you row. 👍

    Another bonus feature of cable instead of paracord is that the smaller pulleys heat up too much, transferring the heat to the vinyl, which aids slipping out of the clamps, and eventual smacking yourself in the face or groin, with entire assembly to follow.

    @ 5:50 in regards to that rescue snatchblock pulley. The (minimum) breaking load indicates the force at which the material fails. This value shows the minimum force the product must withstand once before it breaks, tears or similar. The working load indicates the force with which the material may be regularly loaded in everyday work. The working load is calculated by dividing the breaking load by the safety factor. If no safety factor is given by the manufacturer (e. g. in the instruction manual), a factor of 5 is used: A pulley with a breaking load of 50 kN has a working load of 10 kN. In the PPE sector the factor is 10, which means that a carabiner with a breaking load of 22 kN has a working load of 2.2 kN or 4,945.79 Pounds.

Also, my only hang up with these was the length being too long. How did you mitigate that? And do the pin handles have a weight limit? Great video and I am also on my way with my own system. Perhaps a dumb question: Do you keep a handful of lengths of cable for each different exercise? Seems like Lat Pulls and seated rows are going to take different lengths and if using cables adjusting length easily would be problematic.

    • @KaizenDIYGym

      For the exercises with double pulleys, the weight is pretty low. It is secure. I’d be cautious doing heavy sets but for my purposes, it is fine.

    I'm looking at building a cable machine, which ratio would you say is best? I'm using a 1:1 ratio with my home made setup at the minute but it's aggravating my shoulder with the amount of force needed to get the weight off the floor initially, would you say a 2:1 ratio would be a better fit, also should I use a different ratio for each exercise or just stick to the ratio I mainly use for everything?
    Thanks!

    • @KaizenDIYGym
      @KaizenDIYGym  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I sorta mentioned this in the previous comment but the ratio refers to the weight you feel vs what’s on the weight pin. 1:1 means you put 50 pounds on and you’re lifting 50 pounds. 2:1 means you put 50 pounds on but you’re lifting 25 pounds. If 1:1 is aggravating your shoulder, just decrease the weight.

    I've debated using paracord for my cable system in the past. We used it for dang near everything in the Marines and i still use it around the house. I have had to replace a couple of the steel cables because the metal pulleys I originally used would wear through them over time. I mow use the big nylon pulleys from amazon you showed. Can you update from time to time n how well the paracord holds up and how often you have to replace it?

    Hello,
    Your video was very well done and informative. The machine that i lack is a pulley system. I have my home gym in a portion of my unfinished basement. I also have a golds gym xrs 20. I'm going to use the joist in the ceiling to attach my pulleys. And I'm going to build the belt squat machine and attach it to the ends of my bench stand. There are 2 different videos where it appears that the pulley wheel is fixed for the squat machine, and in this video it looks like the pulley raises or moves above the squat machine. Can you elaborate a little on the differences.

    When I built my pulley system, I wanted something that would support some serious weight. The rock climbing stuff made obvious sense, as if these guys were trusting their lives to this stuff at 1000s of feet up a mountain, it could easily handle a few plates in my gym, and I wasn't so sure about the cheap stuff on Amazon. Apparently, that KN number is about breaking force. You might suspend a weight from a gym cord and pulley , but ultimately if you are using a cord for rock climbing and fall off, your body is going plummet at a but of a rate and exert some serious force on that pulley and wires, when it trys to stop you. The Kilo Newtons (KN) of force is the force that rope can resist to save a falling climber.

      @@KaizenDIYGym 20 kN ~ 4500lbs. The Newton is the unit of force in the metric system.
      Just an aside, Amazon has rock climbing pulleys, etc. that tend to be made of Chinesium. They are probably fine for something like this, but I certainly wouldn't bet my life on them to keep me from falling. The brands that REI carries are reputable, and worth every penny if your life depends on them not failing.

      @@KaizenDIYGym REI, in the back room usually, sells rope by the foot.
      On the floor they may have pre-packaged rope.
      All this is way stronger than paracord.
      Static rope won't stretch much, unlike general climbing rope meant to and much rope generally.
      This rope is much stronger than paracord or rope sold in hardware or big box stores.
      Climbing pulleys designed for rope are best.
      I'd use climbing rated static rope and pulleys and learn some knots...
      Also I use wood dowels or pipes for handles and I just use a loop of rope wound around them multiple times, turns, with a cowhitch as opposed to drilling a hole and using an eye bolt which weakens them, mostly a concern with the wood ones.
      I start off with a loop of rope by using double fisherman's knots and then do multiple turns with cow hitches keeping them nice and laid flat.
      Great channel by the way!
      When are you going to make a wooden Power Rack?

  • @VancouverIslandSoul

    Great tutorial, liked and subscribed, but hoping for some general advice on my error I made.
    I have your suggested paracord, hitchpins and pulleys ready to go. I made a subtle mistake of not realizing you attached your second pulley & hitch pins laterally towards each other. To be clearer, my squat rack does not have the holes that allow horizontal attachment, and only allow for the direction towards your mirror in the video
    Is there an effective way I could get around this and still be able to attach the already obtained materials seamlessly at different heights. ( goal is to be able to perform cable lateral raises, cable chest presses etc?)

    • @KaizenDIYGym
      @KaizenDIYGym  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, I think you can still use hitch pins on the forward facing holes.
