Firstly, great videos. You inspired me to do this! I also borrowed ideas from Usawa fitness. I especially like your hitch pin idea. Just a couple of things to add for people: the thickness of the cable will be the biggest factor for your safe working load (material and thread design etc also matter) and to maximize this you should strip the cable of the vinyl where you clamp. You have to use the thimbles and clamps associated samples with the bare stripped cable when done this way! Also from the comments and your link it seems you used 1/8" cable coated to a max outer diameter of 3/16". The break strength of a single cable when is all is done is likely in the ballpark of 250 lbs if stripped (max break strength divided by design factor multiplied by termination efficiency which for your cable is approximately 80% (I used typical values and this could vary)). If you use both ropes at the same time you could lift a load around 500 lbs because the tension would be divided by 2. On a single arm movement I wouldn't go much past 250 lbs. This is probably enough for most people but only works if your strip the cable as mentioned. Thicker cables are available (i.e. 3/16" coated with PVC or nylon to 1/4") which could increase your safe working load. However, for safety I would still advise stripping the ends where you make the loop to maximize "termination efficiency"
I did this slightly different. I used some steel I-beam clamps to attach the pulleys to the beam in my basement. I also made my loading pin out of some pieces of 3/4 inch black pipe (floor flange, 12 inch nipple, and end cap). I drilled the end cap and tapped it for an eye bolt. The rest is pretty much the same as your setup. Thanks for the video. This is a very versatile setup for me.
Best DIY video, many others were screwing other pieces of wood or whatever to the rack which I didn't like to attach the pulleys. I didn't know they were called "Tie Down Straps" and now I can happily build my own!
I was doing lat pulldowns and the clamps mounted down above the weight got loose and started shooting all over the place. Now after seeing this tutorial, I hope it will hold in place although I think from now on I'll be a bit nervous every time when do some movements with this.
Clamp them down very tightly. Now you can also find complete pulley set ups for sale on Amazon. They weren’t around as much when I first made this video
Great video! Worked wonderfully and I love having the tiedowns around! I will say that if you happen to have a squat rack that's NOT fastened to the wall, I recommend weighing down the back end with a loaded bar, some plates, or something else. I'm not saying I almost died today when my (wooden) rack started to tip forward, but I might have had to mop up a puddle before finishing my workout.
For anyone who's watching this and having problems with their cage wanting to tip forward when they use their pulley, I bought a couple of those five gallon paint buckets from Home Depot, filled them with about $6 worth of Quikrete, then put the lids on and used ratcheting tie downs to lash the buckets against the two rear uprights on my cage. (I didn't even bother to mix the concrete -- just poured the dry powder into the buckets.) The whole process cost me about 20 minutes and 20 bucks, and my rack is now rock solid when I use the high pulley.
I've recently discovered snatch blocks. Between those and the tiedowns you turned me onto, I'm able to change the heights of the cables and add complexity to the pully system while using my original cables.
Thanks. Works well. If you don't want to put all the pieces together, you can also check out this pulley system that comes with everything you need th-cam.com/video/v2p2fB_HE6Y/w-d-xo.html

Thanks for this. I'm guessing if you decided to do a Low Cable Crossover, you'll need a few more parts, not exactly the opposite of your high crossover, but a crossover of the crossover and the low pulley system?
Yes you need more parts. I made a part 2 video. I also did a video review on the RailTrainer, which is an advanced pulley system with an adjustable cable that let’s you recreate many functional trainer exercises. Search for RailTrainer in my videos and you’ll see it
Shredded Dad I had a similar problem. I just bought from the amazon links in the descriptions and my cable coating has split off and detached exposing the bare metal. Have you had any trouble with this?
I haven't had this issue. What I'm thinking may be happening is that when you cut the cable's slack it's not on the center of the pulley's roller. Is that what it is? If that's the case you may have to play around with the position of the anchor points.
You’re supposed to remove the vinyl where you’ve attached the saddles and thimbles at the end of the wires. The vinyl adds about 1/16” to the diameter of the wire, so if, for example, you are using 3/16” vinyl coated wires, make sure the pulleys are made for 1/4” wire, not 3/16” wire, otherwise the pulleys will damage the vinyl coating of the wires. Good video.
the railtrainer you recommended is a better system. This has no tension in the cable at all while not in use. It is better to spend the money and get 1 or 2 railtrainer and call it done.
"Carabiner" is such an odd word. I feel like the video would be at least 3 minutes shorter you didn't say it at all lol. In all seriousness, you're a lifesaver. Hey man just wondering how much of the 10 feet did you cut? Did you use all of them? Im trying to scale your setup to mine as i am shorter than you lol. Im afraid i might get it too short or too long (adds to the expense if i go excess). Also how high is the bar from which you hung the pulleys?
Keep an eye out for online deals and local sales on Craigslist or FB marketplace I also have a discounts page with coupons from many companies ShreddedDad.com/discount-gym-equipment
With the fly setup, should I include a pulley on top of the loading pin? This would balance the pulling force, so that one has to exert an equal amount of force on both sides to lift the weight. For example, suppose that I only put a loading pin, and one side exerted a stronger force due to strength imbalance. The load would get lighter for the other side. I am not really familiar with the pulley mechanics
Hi, I'm going to try this myself however I've got a double looped wire. So guessing I'll have to take apart the pulley to put it through, what would be the best way to do this?
Awesome video man, the best I could find on youtube.. appreciate it.. I jist bought a new Marcy monster cage set up and this is exactly what Im looking to make. As long as it stays in the groove of the pulley yes it does. When you cut the cable's slack make sure it's sitting inside the groove.

well the rack was drilled into the wall, so you will need to atach it to something that is drilled to the wall or celling
What can you use if you do not have a cage to hook to
What do you have? Just a pull up bar on the wall?
Hey man just wondering how much of the 10 feet did you cut? Did you use all of them? Im trying to scale your setup to mine as i am shorter than you lol. Im afraid i might get it too short or too long (adds to the expense if i go excess). Also how high is the bar from which you hung the pulleys?
im planning to hang mine on a bar i measured at exactly 6 feet high
I didn’t cut any of the 10 feet. It’s better to have more cable than to be short. You can always cut off any excess.
what is the thickness of the cable you are using?
1/8" with a weight capacity of 340 lbs
How do I set up a home gym on a budget?
Keep an eye out for online deals and local sales on Craigslist or FB marketplace

Hey, just want to say thanks for sharing your intelligence with us. so we can save that money.
You’re welcome 👊
wear and tear on the straps with heavier weight, why not make secure pin inserts that the carabiners can attach to?
You could do that too.
I just went with something cheap that could hold a lot of weight.
In this setup I have to run a long wire through 3 pulleys
Hi, I'm going to try this myself however I've got a double looped wire. So guessing I'll have to take apart the pulley to put it through, what would be the best way to do this?
Yeah take the pulley apart and put it together once you get the wire in
How long are the cables?
The cables I'm using are 10 feet each
Sir what is the cable length ?
I bought 2 cables at 10 feet each.
I was scrolling to see if someone asked this question and 💥BAM MVP
What is the red frame called?

@@ShreddedDad Thank you
Awesome video man, the best I could find on youtube.. appreciate it..
I jist bought a new Marcy monster cage set up and this is exactly what Im looking to make. Found some package deals on amazon with 2 heavy duty pulleys, a 2.5m 8mm cable already with double back loops and 2 carabiners for about £24. Just need to get the straps and then Ill make this 👍
Awesome. You could also add 2 more pulleys to add low to high. Will probably be making an updated video with that set up soon.
@@ShreddedDad if you make that video will be great as thats what I was trying to incorporate.
@@KulDegun if you go on my IG @dadshredded , you can see me using that set up
@@ShreddedDad thanks..will follow your ig 👍
How to stop weights doing pendulum motions ? I am afraid they might catch momentum and hit right on face.
Do the exercises in a controlled way to avoid a lot of swinging. You can also hang a chain from the weights to the floor
The Amazon link for the Delta Quick link is for one that is way smaller than the one in the video.
My mistake. Look for another one or use something else than can block a 2" hole.
If you find the right size, let me know and I'll update the link in the description.
Thanks for letting me know.
Ok I found the right link. This one is over 2" long amzn.to/2wNkKFB
I wound up using some cable left over from the build, a few nuts and an old ceiling fan mounting bracket. Thank you for the reply.
Hello. What's the thickness of the wire? 1/8"?
I got 1/8” galvanized coated wire rope with a 340 lbs capacity. Sells for about $0.40 per ft at Home Depot.
@@ShreddedDad Thanks for the quick and effective reply! Congrats for the video!
@@lucasaraujodefaria2475 you’re welcome
What is the diameter/ size of the cable?
1/8" with coating. Each cable is 10 ft long but the length might vary based on your set up
@@ShreddedDad awesome, thanks. Setup mine last night and holds weight just fine. Thank you
Is a home gym better than a gym?
I like it better
