    I can’t tell you how many times I have seen this in my shop, not to mention the clutch fluid on 14 and newer baggers. Some bike owners have no idea that the fluid even needs to be changed!

      Harley does make an “extended reach” brake pedal. That should fit that year model. I’m not as savvy with the parts books as those parts guys are, but I know it exists. Just not 100% on the figment.

    I have two dealers in Columbia SC. One is two miles from my house and the other one is 20 miles away. The one I take my bike to is one greedy dealer. I had them install new cams in my bike one year ago. They had to drain the oil to do the work. I brought my Amsoil with me and had them put it in the bike. After they finished the install, they charged me 1/2 hour labor to pour the oil in the bike. I paid them over $1,200 for the install and they charged me $50 to pour my own oil in the damn bike. I talked to the owner about that and his answer was if cost us to keep this shop running. I told him they made enough off me from parts and labor for the cam install. He did not give a shit. I have been a loyal customer for a long time. Harley Heaven in Irmo South Carolina.

      Modern dealership overhead (including those mandatory huge Taj Mahal-looking dealerships) is why flat rate is usually strictly billed. I happen to know the backstory to Harley Haven. (I've lived in SC since '85.) It began as a nice small traditional non-dealer shop. HD took exception to the "Harley" in their name/signage so it became "The Haven" (with "Harley" crossed out!) until Tim got a dealer franchise and returned the name to original. The facilities you are required to have are so expensive that cutting deals is cutting your own throat because they add up and if you cut one deal and word spreads, so does butthurt from other customers who want the same. HD killed off MANY Mom and Pop dealerships but that was long ago and not widely remembered today.
      If sales slide far enough I'd expect some dealers to fold since they can't reduce facility size if they are on 30-year mortgages.

    John!!!!!!! Love this video dude!!! THIS IS WHATS WRONG WITH MY BRAKES.. Ok.. so here is a stupid question. HD charges about $450 for this brake module (not the electronic part) and about $100 to bleed I guess. Why has no one figured out a way of just clearing the blockage?? Is there not a "rebuild kit" for something like this? What's inside the block... rings, seals maybe? Just wondering if these things can be replaced to restore its use. Let me know..

    I got hit with the $1000 repair bill earlier this year. Sales did say anything about and it was a used bike so no books came with the bike. Sucks. And then a few months later the MOCO sent me that letter. Sales guys need better trading and also the walk around I got when buying my bike not one person mentioned anything about the abs system.

    Mike the brake peddle parts that are put on a police competition bike that I asked you about is on www.softbrake.com it lowers the angle of the brake peddle by 20% making it easier to work the brake during slow ride competition. My question is do the H-D dealers have this service? Oh and up here its $120.00 per hour labor i don't know if that's good or bad service!
    anyway please advise

It's more fun that way but I can't be doing that forever!!

    A lttle off topic. Pardon me. Changed brake fluid in front and rear brakes yesterday. Did the clutch today. My clutch (brake dot 4) fluid was black. Seems as though the master cyl. seal is bleeding off black crap into fluid. Ever run into that before?

    • @TheHarleyTech
      @TheHarleyTech  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nah. The first run of the clutch recalls called for a disgusting graphite lube to go on the rebuild kit. Made the dot 4 look crazy. A later recall replaced that. Do you know if you have an open recall?

    Question. I have a 2012 road king classic. 1st bike ever. Just saw this about flushing fluid. Since the breaks work fine can I flush it out with new or does it have to be done at a dealer for the computer controlling the abs?

    • @TheHarleyTech
      @TheHarleyTech  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Without using the shop computer, the module isn’t fully changing fluid. The valves in there can also seize up. So it’s good to have the computer actuate them to keep everything clean and working.

    • @chippulliam2772
      @chippulliam2772 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. I wasn’t sure if it was an open or closed system for the ABS. I know cars are open system so the process is the same as regular flushing as in the old non abs systems. I wasn’t sure about motorcycles.

    • @TheHarleyTech

      +Jim Wilson the abs service requires the computer. Unfortunately the dealer has to do it.

    • @jeffleach2668
      @jeffleach2668 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jim Wilson. I received the same letter from Harley. I had no trouble flushing my brake fluid on my '12 ABS Roadglide by sucking the new fluid through at the calipers. I think he misread the question. I think you need to go to the dealer if the ABS unit is being replaced. I imagine if you accidentally suck the ABS unit dry you might also need the dealers help getting the air out of the ABS unit. Hope I'm correct on this and I have had no issues with my brakes and I did the flush them a while ago.

    • @TheHarleyTech
      @TheHarleyTech  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Technically you are probably correct about not using the computer as long as air isn’t introduced. HD says always use the computer, as a tech, I’m always going to say use the computer

      I’m not a pro but I’m thinking that any fluid that resides in the abs unit would only get cycled out if it were to be electronically engaged. Meaning the possibility of H2O contaminated fluid remaining in the module and creating corrosion rendering the abs useless ...
      John, is that HD’s logic?

      I’m not sure about HDs logic, but it is true that without engaging the unit, that fluid may not be flushed out.

    What is the easiest way to see if my bike has ABS? I bought it used and they didn't say...

      When you start your bike does an ABS light flash on the speedo/tach? You’ll also have a wheel speed sensor in the left side of the front axle instead of a spacer.

    There is no such thing as electronic knowledge. The CPU takes input it receives to make a very limited decision not based on previous experience and applies pressure to the system. Input information is not knowledge.

    how do you know ABS broken John?

    • @TheHarleyTech
      @TheHarleyTech  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If there is an electronic ABS problem, the ABS light comes on. If it’s a mechanical problem, often times the lever will quit working. Best bet is to have the quality of the brake fluid checked, and have it flushed if it needs it. That will keep the mechanical stuff working.
