Sears operated catalog stores in small towns all across rural America where it was just a simple room with catalogs you could buy and take home, or use there. That gave Sears greater access to more markets than the retailers who stuck to just the cities, and with that, Sears had the leverage to get exclusives out of producers. When my family lived in rural Texas in the mid-80s, we ordered from there. That's how we got quite a few things otherwise only found in big cities.

It's Ike today where we have Target or Walmart Star Wars exclusives. Kinda sucks because I don't have a car to drive to five different stores to find them and when I've looked online they're already sold out. I have some exclusive 3.75 Black Series stormtroopers from Walmart, but I had to wait two years to find them on Ebay at a reasonable price.

As a kid, I and others would get made fun of if we bought stuff at Sears. Oftentimes if we showed up to school with new Sears clothes or toys we'd have to lie when asked, "did you get that at Sears?" Now I bet everyone misses Sears.

My mom got clothes from JC Penny, but the Sears catalogs were the best. There was so much stuff that you wouldn't see in many stores. I would check off what I wanted for Christmas, make sure to show my parents, then let them pick my presents.

Tim Taylor buying his clothes at Sears was a running gag on Home Improvement. I have a friend who told me that her husband was told that as an actor he looked too working class and would be best suited to a commercial of a guy buying an engagement ring from Sears.

Wow, takes me back. I had those pjs. I remember my mom finally putting them away in a trunk and years later when she took them out, along with other clothes, the white of the pjs had turned yellow, so she threw it away. we must have gone to sears a lot because I had a few of these...the cantina adventure set, the creature cantina, the gun turret and spy droid, and the rebel command center. I had a cousin that had the jabba dungeon and the besbin set. I was always telling him the dungeon was the same thing as the droid factory and he wouldn't believe me.

I was SO pumped when I got the Cloud City Playset as a gift from my Grandma. I feel like it was Christmas but it could have been a birthday. Lord knows what happened to it. But I had many adventures with my Star Wars figures and that playset. You know back when we used to play with our toys instead of leave them in the box and look at them.

Sears was one of the few stores we had in Northern NJ back in the late 1970s. Sears and Two Guys. No K-Mart, Wall-Mart or Target. Not even a Toy R us (that was built in the 1980s). I got all my Star Wars toys at Sears and every Xmas I would go through the Sears catalog and circle what I wanted from Santa!

Actually had almost the entire Micro collection from the Empire Strikes Back. In fact as far as ships went those were the only ships we got growing up due to the price. My mom worked at Sears in the 80's and in our town the only free standinding department stores were K-Mart, Hill's and Zayres.

Sears did some exclusive stuff for GI Joe as well, I still have the motorcycle, but the car is dilapidated. I once had the Dreadnok/Zartan version of the Cobra Stinger but the roof and doors changed from light green to dark green in sunlight, photochromic. The rest of the Stinger was molded in black and dark green, the colors of the Swamp Skier. The same box also contained a version of the RAM cycle, same color scheme, but the seat, wheels, and sidecar Gatling cannon were the light green photochromic.

We had a Sears Surplus which was a more cluttered Sears. I got the 4 figure cantina set there. I discovered early on the plastic cantina fit perfectly on the right of the cardboard base. Combined, the original 12 figures displayed nicely. I didn't know they had so many exclusives. I still have a prized Super Joe Commander's Rocket Command Center from there. Its plastered with glow in the dark stickers. Which made it all that more cool to me. Unfortunately, Joe and Luminose rubber joints and hands have hardened to crumbs. So there comically in a shambles of pieces. Apparently a universal condition that exists even in unopened figure bubbles. LOL! My parents boycotted Sears for reasons unknown to me. I did manage to acquire a couple of the later sets becuase dad needed a tool or something and took me there, and I, using my own money, picked them up (Rebel Command Center and first Jabba Dungeon). I do remember seeing and handling the micro Falcon in my local Kiddie World (big indie toy store) and wanting it but could not afford it. They were in the same shopping center as Sears and Penny's, so either maybe the managers of the stores did a deal with each other, or like you say the set wasn't 100% exclusive. I still want one, BTW.
Oh, I did need to get a Blue Snaggletooth by trading a bunch of GI Joes ro my buddy whose parents shopped at Sears, He told me his cantina was long gone at that point. (cardboard toys not meant to last) but I would have had that too, had he taken more care.

Maybe it was because I live in Quebec and a lot of things would never cross the border, because of the French language laws, but in one of the photos Junkman showed, the writing was in French, so I don't get it?!?
