I'll be honest, I don't even own one of these but it just looks and sounds like you don't maintain your bikes. Also, what is the point of owning a $1k+ Brompton and you're afraid to use it in bad weather? Those things are built like a brick, they can withstand an amazing amount of abuse. Anything from the 80s and 90s is going to suck if you don't maintain it, and anything from before 2000 is gonna be hard to find parts for. I'd change this video title to "don't buy a bike you don't know how to maintain or fix."

I totally agree. I bought my old Dahon folder second hand, and it didn’t have any of the problems he listed. It wasn’t in the best condition, but all of the folding/locking mechanisms worked just fine. I’d say it seems that those problems only affect a small percentage of old Dahon folders.

My Dahon is 2nd hand. Has a steel frame. Only problem was with seat post slipping down. A separate quick release clamp on the seat post fixed that problem. I have been happy with bike in all other ways. The 20 inch wheels make for a smoother ride. Your bike looks to be a very old model. Oh....and I would never drill holes in a frame.

I think I figured out why I like watching your videos. For some reason I am a person who when leaving my house, stuff just seems to happen to me. Somebody messed with me, or I make a mistake, or just random bad luck. When I watch the stories in your vids it seems real. Based on the content on a lot of channels I watch, it seems these people lived charmed lives where everything always goes their way, it always works out; and they have the golden ticket to life. That’s not how life is for me, and it isn’t how life seems to be for people I know. Your videos present how things really are, and more importantly ideas and tips on how to overcome life’s little adversities. I have to laugh whenever you are trying to record in a semi secluded area and some random ubiquitous person always comes by and you have to roll down the road a way to start again. So in summary, I like your channel and enjoy the content. I really really wish I could get a Brompton bicycle and one day I will have the disposable income to get one. For now I am enjoying my Zizzo Forte and really appreciated the review you did for the Liberte. I look forward to your impressions videos of the Forte you purchased and for your 1 month thoughts on the Liberte.

Hi Brian, just happened to be looking at bike trailers over the last couple of days. The single wheel ones looked to be the most sturdy, but what seemed to be a drawback was that most connected via the axle. The Aevon trailers look very durable and they attach via the seat post. The L180 is light weight and foldable for travel ( I know in the past you have mentioned travelling and touring with your Brompton), but I don't think it would be suitable for taking in a supermarket with your Brompton to do a food shop. Also they do seem expensive. My folding bike as a similar nut on the fold, which I have had to tighten ( I almost lost it once). However it has a loop and clip also, I had been thinking of making it extra secure with a velcro strap, after seeing what has happened to you I think I will definitely do that. When I had the gears lowered on my bike, the mechanic was trying to persuade me to trade my bike in for a used Dahon. Glad I didn't take him up on it. I have looked a lot at the Terns and they do look tempting, however if I did get another bike it would probably be a Brompton. Mainly for travelling something it would be possible to fly with. However no rush, no one can travel at the moment and Bromptons are scarcer than hens teeth!!

The original steering head bearings on my budget folder (a Taiwanese Raleigh) were dreadful. I couldn't adjust out the play. I stripped it down and found the bearing cups which should be a press fit in the frame tube were a sloppy clearance fit. I bought a Cane Creek headset but it was about 6mm too tall to assemble on the bike. I shortened the head tube 3mm top and bottom. My first trade was as a maintenance fitter and machinist but with no machine shop access I had to saw and file the frame to size. It took me a whole day. I used a (big) micrometer and got each face parallel to within a couple of thou and now the steering head is the best bit of the bike.
Every time I worked on that bike I wished I'd spent the extra on a Brompton but now I have - and I don't regret it. Perhaps you need a second (winter) Brompton?

To adjust the upper steering nut--could U try a freewheel puller lathed down to fit into the outer cup? Also, pulling a trailer from so high up on the seatpost risks stress-cracking the frame and is inherently unstable. I pull using a folding luggage dolly carabinered into a standard rear rack. Since it attaches low over the rear wheel it's more horizontal and doesn't capsize.

I bought a used dohan omega about 2 years ago, i serviced the 3speed Torpedo hub that was on it, i replaced the horrible 90`s MTB Sattle for a cheap comfe one, and new Tires (to find tires was apain in the bud, a weird 20in that was more like 21in in compairison to normal 20in wheels). the folding Mechanism of the handlebar was a bit sluggish so i cutted a piece of inner Tube rubber to size, to lay it in between. i replaced the rear sprocket for a much smaller one to go faster. I have driven it nearly every Saturday, and use it for my 50km (25 per way) commute from time to time, when my main bike is somehow not useable. I feel very save riding it, even at speeds of up to 30Km/h. The v-brake in combo with the coaster break are more than good enough (to be fair, i am used to ride classic Bikes from the 50`s with sometimes horrible dangerous combinations of coasterbreak with a 3 speed Derailieur, and Stamp break in the front, so everything better than this is a good break for me). The Fatal errors you describe seem to me like classical user errors, but to be fair the maintennace on these dohans is not very userfriendly but doable. But if its not for you that is ok. i like the bike you got instead very much to be honest.

That's a heck of a huge box you were carrying there. That brings the CG quite far from the the trailer. I've tipped mine over about 5 or so times, but never had any failures like that. I was quite surprised to see the steel pin bending. I'd expect the counterpart rubber component to break instead.

I have 8 DaHon classic and bought my first one in 1980s from the DAHON brothers in SF cow palace $350 when they had office in hayward and still have the receipt. And traveled around the world twice with them I never had a trailer but had a backpack that fit onto a custom rear rack and custom clamp in back of the seat. I had the frame crack in Budapest and went into a body shop and they let me use their welder fixed it and they couldn't speak English and no charge. broke the pedal crank and flat tire in Hong Kong and went to a bike shop and they fixed my tube with hot fire patch they didn't even take wheel off just dug out the tube.. They had the standard part in stock and I was on my way. I was 5-8 145 lbs and you cant be overweight for these. At that time there was nothing else for sale, NO BROMPTONS, NO FRIDAYS NOTHING ELSE FOR SALE.. The only problem with them now is the seat post frame tubing inside will rust and hard to collapse. The new bushing now are white not black from china. I would travel with the bike in a black bag and check it on the plane and carry on the backpack. I rode it at RED SQARE MOSCOW, EAST GERMANY and CHINA even Australia rode the bike to the Sydney opera house, many sailors got killed because the traffic is backwards. I worked at Subic Navy base in Philippines Top Gun Days F14s, 200 girlie bars and in Singapore on ships never got hurt had a great time. I would ride the bike on the 600 foot ship on deck cargo ship. The side pull brakes are lousy but the upgraded cant brakes were better and most of the world cities are flat. The older frames are good with the down bracket for the steering tube. I bought the first one for $350 but find them free all the time or at flee markets $50and Target had them for $75 clearance . YOU HAVE TO KNOW YOUR LIMITATIONS AND THAT INCLUDES THE BIKE. I learned walking is way tooo slow and the bike was better. I would even hang on to the jeepneys in Manila and get pulled around. The girls in Philippines are like running water THANK YOU DAHON for the great adventures.

Word of advice to Dahon riders: Don’t get up on the pedals when riding uphill. The mechanism used to secure the handlebar to the front fork at the fold will snap under high handlebar pressure. I learned this the hard way after the handlebar snapped forward climbing a hill on the pedals and had a nasty wipeout. I eventually fixed this with duct tape, then the bike was stolen. I let it go, knowing it was a potential death trap for the thief. Since then, I’ve stayed on the seat in every hill climb. I now have the much-sturdier Dahon K-One e-bike.

I have an old Dahon Mariner. It is by far the worst piece of garbage filmsy crap metal I ever had. Slipping seatpost, slipping handlebar. Horribly flimsy and very uncomfortable folding point locks. The handlebars folding mechanism already broke. It is welded back again, but I do not trust in it. And one more little thing, the bottom bracket does not have any tread, the treas is on the crank spindle. It is impossible to adjust it just right. Really, the worst bike I ever had :D

When you talked about the failures, I thought a buddy with a welder can fix the steering issue after you set the bearing tension. new brake pads and the locktite you put on the bolts finishes the deal. I get rid of the orangutan seat that comes on bikes typically.

Calm down man-- take some Valium. I’ve had several older Dahon’s and they all were pieces of crap. That’s my opinion and I’m sticking to it. As for hitting a pedestrian you are right….however we cyclist care less about following the rules when no one else does. Pedestrians are told to look out for others, be courteous, and follow trail/sidewalk rules- ie laws regarding dogs and proper use of bike paths or sidewalks. I’d say 65-70 percent break one or more of these rules on a daily basis so if I have an attitude about following the rules- so be it.
