He was one of the all time greats! Last year I was at lunch with my aunt and we were talking about movies and I started going on about how much I adore Montgomery Clift and she responded "Oh, I've been friends with his nephew for over fifty years."
It's a very interesting film for sure. However, it's not one I would watch out of enjoyment or being entertained. I'd have to be in an introspective state before I'd ever watch it again. It's a fascinating study in how people, living in a fallen state, deal with their reality. Then there's the backstory, which is worthy of a movie unto itself.
One of my favorite actors of all time......I especially loved him in 'Suddenly Last Summer, and the movie with Shelly Winters and Taylor. He was mesmerizing to watch.
The movie with Elizabeth Taylor and Shelly Winters was “A Place in the Sun”, released in 1951. Montgomery Clift was one of the most breathtakingly, rapturously beautiful men to ever grace the silver screen, as well as being one of the greatest, most unique actors to hit the industry. He awed Liz Taylor and countless other acting legends who worked with him both in film and on stage. On the evening of May 12, 1956, during the shooting of “Raintree County”, Montgomery Clift was involved in a serious car accident on his way back home from a party at the house of Elizabeth Taylor. He apparently fell asleep at the wheel of his car while driving and smashed his car into a telephone pole. Taylor rushed to him and found him unconscious, entwined within the crumpled ruins of his car. He was gruesomely injured and he was choking to death. Taylor took immediate action. She shoved her hand down his throat and removed his teeth, which had broken off and had lodged in his airway, blocking his ability to breathe. She literally saved his life for the moment but Clift still needed to be rushed to the hospital for life saving surgery. His stunning face had been disfigured in the crash. Surgeons did their best to repair his face with plastic surgery but his face was never restored to its once flawless beauty. He was still handsome, but in a different way. He was ethereal, mysterious, vulnerable and had immense magnetism, charm, enigmatic allure and charisma. His personal problems may have been his undoing and caused his early demise, but his astounding performances will shine on forever and make him a beloved, unforgettable and enduring presence
I wish he'd played Jett Rink in Giant. Even in Shane, which he rejected. Too bad he didn't get to play Lawrence of Arabia, which he'd wanted.@Moonsiren777
Bravo Hollywood Mysteries. If only Monty had not had that car crash. God bless Liz for her friendship with him. This myth that parents do their best is evidenced in these two people who were his Mom and Dad only by default. I am so glad Montgomery found his theatrical road.
I like the fact he wanted to be an actor & not a movie star. I think he was more handsome & interesting than many other actors from back then. Sadly the car accident left him feeling so ugly & depressed drinking is never an answer to anything. It was so hard to be bi or gay back then even against the law, it must have been nerve racking to have the stress hanging over your head every day you can be thrown in jail for being gay. I guess the substance abuse was a big part of the LBGQT life just to deal with the daily stress. You could be black mailed, arrested, black balled ,shunned even families could be hiding your boyfriend as a nurse or butler or whatever. I think I will watch a few of his oldies. 🌹RIP Clif 🍃🕊️🍃 Thank you ,for this well done biography . Your voice is very soothing.
Montgomery Clift deserved to win the Oscar every time he was nominated, but he didn't because he wasn't in with the whole Hollywood machine. He never lived in Hollywood but in his brownstone in New York City. He made other actors better by being in a movie with them. Clift's main interest was HIS ACTING NOT about the money. Clift & Liz Taylor looked like the PERFECT HOLLYWOOD COUPLE & and BEST FRIENDS. She'd do anything for him & he for her. If there was no Montgomery Clift, there would be no Marlon Brando or James Dean. They were the trifecta of the 3 greatest actors of all time. RIP MONTY‼️🫅🙏♥️
An angels face, handsome as they come, monty clift one of thr greatest actors ❤ to ever to grace the stage, or appear on screen he was very sensitive, which helped to make him a great actor, but unfortunately became his downfall so sad that he had to hide who he truly was, 😢💔😞 prejudice and homophobia , tortured him all the days of 👋 life rip monty you may be gone, but you will never be forgotten❤❤❤
I didn’t know who he was but once I went to the Hollywood Forever Cemetery and saw his memorial. There were penny’s on the ledge. I was doing EVP recordings (electronic voice phenomena), and I asked what the pennies were for? He responds, “A penny for your troubles.” And it sounds like he tap dances after that. I learned later he was in a movie called, “3 Coins from a fountain.” Which I thought was cool. He must have been a really cool man.
@kslinaz: To each his own. I thought it was pedestrian with a very trite plot. I guess my favorite movie of his was Red River. He was that guy. He was also excellent in Suddenly Last Summer. I saw that when I think I was in my early teens and remember finding the content shocking, but he and Elizabeth Taylor made that movie. Excellent acting.
So beautiful in The Heiress and magnetic as Prewitt in From Here To Eternity, Montgomery Clift paved the way for a future generation , truly a great actor RIP Monty ❤❤

You are awesome at this. Love history. Your voice is perfect for this. And you don't hide facts!!! YOU'RE VERY REAL, with this. I learn so much about things. THANK YOU! ❤❤❤ 10 thumbs up!!!
He was immensely talented, but ultimately, like the father in A River Runs Through It, asking his surviving son what he knew about his deceased brother, and supplies the answer, "He was beautiful. You know that he was beautiful." That is Montgomery Clift. Who knows what all he could have achieved had he been born 50 years later and his life not so fraught with issues of sexual preference, which had nothing to do with either his talent, nor his beauty. ❤
Wonderful and revealing as usual. He is one of my favorite actors. So glad you presented him as more than a handsome but sexually confused alcoholic. I believe that attitude is why he rarely gets the accolades he deserves. Two small quibbles. His psychiatrist (much like Marilyn's) did more damage than good. He insisted Monty didn't have an addiction to alcohol or pills (they were prescription, weren't they?) in spite of his physician, lawyer, and close friends' attempts to get him into treatment. My understanding is when Lorenzo James asked him if he wanted to watch the movie, he quickly replied, "Absolutely not!" Instead, he chose to read a book and take a bath. (I can't remember if that's what he was doing in the tub, which is where he was found wearing glasses having suffered a heart attack. (Autopsy showed he had an undiagnosed thyroid condition, which explains his exhaustion and physical appearance especially during the last days of his life. Frankly, it's amazing he made it through "The Defector" at all. No wonder he took pain killers.)
I get so excited when you put out new content. I always think I know the story but you bring new dish to the table every time. Plus, your voice is such a delight.❤

I'm a little bit stunned to see this production advertising a book that they clearly didn't read . Dean was a wannabe who managed to get in good bedfellows with Brando but annoyed Clift with relentless phone calls which Clift would hangup on immediately. Brando was considered a respected friend amazingly having started out being a "fan" in the beginning. They both got a kick out of the " rivalry" portrayed in the media. He was only friends with Jack Larson although many speculated Larson might have wanted more. It was often seen as an uneven friendship as Clift was mistreating Larson.

He was a great actor and very handsome man, but troubled. You must see his movies, Rain Tree County, The Heiress, and A place in the Sun, very good roles.
Good synopsis of an enigmatic actor. Just so you know, in describing his role in "The Heiress" the term 'fortune hunter' is more commonly used for men and 'gold digger' pertains more often to women, whose design it is to take advantage of and swindle their prey.
Gold digger is perfectly acceptable. It sounds like you think women's motives are more insidious than men's when doing the exact same activity. A gold digging woman is usually someone trying to marry a rich man.
Well done as usual. I can't offer the very deepest sympathy. He seems to have lived an unbelievably privileged life. Well off upbringing. Precociously early success as an actor. A get-out-of-World-War-2 card (dysentery lasts 4 years?). Big pay-cheques, the respect of his peers, an adoring public. He pouted. He drank. He drank and pouted and drank some more. He smashed up his face, almost certainly driving drunk. I appreciate his talent and his artistic integrity, but he threw away his life. Still, some damned good work left behind. And Elizabeth Taylor was an angel.
How does one reach into yourself and come out clean, when you’re brought up by bigots? Your childhood is your formative years. Boy, what a Herculon task. To reject and instead, consciously search for the truth. indeed there is hope for the world. 🕯️
If you intend to communicate with a broad audience, you must speak slower and louder. There are thousands of people with hearing loss, for whom such videos are impossible to follow, even with subtitles.
Oh, wah ... wah ... wah. "I didn't get to do what I wanted to do all the time." "I had to pretend to be different than what I really felt like inside." "My boss was mean to me." Welcome to the real world where everybody else has the same, if not worse, struggles in life. That's not being a hero.
? Hardly. Every roll he played was the same...as another poster said, he played himself. Hardly what is known as acting. Lucky him the macho misogynistic bigoted society of the time lapped it up.
He was one of the all time greats!

Elizabeth Taylor, compelling as she was, was no angel
@@EverTheTwain She was for tortured gay artists. Not as much for Eddie Fisher.
That nurse was his boyfriend.
Lorenzo James was Clift’s final companion before he died!
@@gailobrien9380 I know that. But some folks want to deny it.
@@andyanderson3628Trust me, I know this!😂 Clift’s nephews, made a film about this a few years ago, and made sure that they interviewed “Uncle Larry!”
How does one reach into yourself and come out clean, when you’re brought up by bigots? Your childhood is your formative years. Boy, what a Herculon task. To reject and instead, consciously search for the truth. indeed there is hope for the world. 🕯️
A Multitude of people are raised by bigots and grow into totally Non- bigoted adults!!
Great video with only one minor hiccup! Deborah Kerr as in STAR (not pronounced cur)
Tipecal holliwood story.
It IS a Typical Hollywood story. Well said!✌️❤️
re: not remembering his childhood... PTA, post traumatic amnesia.
It rare to be beautiful and sexy as it not always the same thing him and Elvis were definitely both xxx
Her voice sounds like Maggie Gyllenhaal ..
If you intend to communicate with a broad audience, you must speak slower and louder. There are thousands of people with hearing loss, for whom such videos are impossible to follow, even with subtitles.
Sad loss of a talented man a tortured soul
Personally I never got the
he reminds me of tom cruise
``Dangerous cattle drive='' every cattle drive. And of course he kept apart from cast members on set. He was a trust funder.
Oh, wah ... wah ... wah. "I didn't get to do what I wanted to do all the time." "I had to pretend to be different than what I really felt like inside." "My boss was mean to me." Welcome to the real world where everybody else has the same, if not worse, struggles in life. That's not being a hero.
You really sound silly!
@@lidopina4334 she sounds angry and sad.
@TrulyJefferson he is already dead why nag on him like that.
Totally agree, sick of these thinking there in a unique situation
John Wayne was one of the best actors. The last of a real man breed. Bring back that breed of man.
@wildflower: Mostly they were fictional constructs and only existed on screen
@@Laura-y4h read up on John Wayne a real man....
? Hardly. Every roll he played was the same...as another poster said, he played himself. Hardly what is known as acting. Lucky him the macho misogynistic bigoted society of the time lapped it up.
Wayne was also a raging racist and mysoginist. Let’s not bring back that type of man.
He was a draft dodger and the furthest thing from a real man.
