    I was Facebook friends with André Soares, who wrote an amazing biography on Ramon (Beyond Paradise: The Life of Ramon Novarro). He has since left social media, but I will always be grateful for his book and how much I learned from him about Ramon. And THIS is another great episode. Great job!❤️

    I saw Ben Hur years ago, when I went through a stage of watching some of the silent classic epics in more niche Manchester cinemas, when they were screened. I had forgotten that Novarro played the hero of the piece, which I admired for the scale if its achievement, rather than its overall artistic merit. I have not seen any other Novarro films other than that, as my interest lay more on the side of European efforts (especially German expressionist cinema) rather than Hollywood creations. Your overview of Novarro's life was extremely interesting and informative. It is such a shame that his life came to an end in the way it did. He didn't deserve to leave the life he clearly wasn't happy with, in such a brutal way but unfortunately he left himself open to such an awful event occurring. Thanks for the rainy tale. We have enough rain here in the North UK already but at least the rain on your soundtracks is calming

    Another incredible and well-researched documentary! Thank you so much for dispelling the rumors started by Kenneth Anger in his salacious book "Hollywood Babylon", where he claimed that Valentino and Novarro were lovers. You rightly reported that this was indeed false. Outside of Novarro appearing in Valentino's film, "The Four Horseman of the Apocalypse as an extra, the two did not have much in terms of interaction.

      @@HollywoodMysteries Have you made an episode about Canadian silent movie star, Marie Prevost, yet? I've never seen her films, but I heard about her from the song that Nick Lowe wrote about her. I've seen clips of her acting, and she was not only beautiful, she had excellent comedic timing and played endearing "devil-may-care", flapper party girl kind of characters.
      She's another actress who didn't make the switch to the talkies, and she went downhill with alcoholism and anorexia. Her death was very macabre, and why there's a cheerful little ditty sung about her misfortune, written by my favorite cheeky British pub-rock songwriter, Nick Lowe. (He meant no offense, he wrote other "cheerful" sounding songs about tragic themes, the kind of gallows humor Brits are so good at)
      She was a beautiful, talented actress who starred in more than 100 silent movies so it would be wonderful for her to be remembered for her beauty and talent and not just for the sad way she died young.

    Having read Hollywood Babylon, I was familiar with the story about Navarro and Valentino, but I knew better than to take Kenneth Anger’s word for it. Thanks for clearing that up. I do wonder about Valentino’s sexuality, however, given that he was married to one lesbian and one woman who, according to some reports, was either gay or bisexual.

    You've done it again!🏆 A stunningly handsome lad and great hair line! Treatment of actors during the pre-code time was abysmal, and now some would say it has been upgraded to abysmal lite. I think his increased abuse of alcohol as Hallowe'en approached may have had something to do with the observances Day of the Dead, All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day, all three probably being part of the fabric of his life from early years and onward. I pray he is at peace.

    • @HollywoodMysteries
      @HollywoodMysteries  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      That's a great point about the Day of the Dead and how it affected him. Maybe he had a terrible premonition. He did have great hair and I guess it's understandable why he got upset having it pulled off his head during Ben Hur.

      @@HollywoodMysteries Yes indeed, I grok your remarks. I suspect Novarro was (a) sensitive.
      Caution, stupid segue: Your mention of Ben Hur suddenly made me think of that thar varmi't Bugs Bunny and his epic version, "Ben Hare". Sufferin' succotash(!), now that's gonna stick in mah mind all day like a tune ya cain't get outta your head. [Interesting trivia: My folks lived in Manhattan Beach in the early 1950s and their neighbor & friend, Mabs Jones, had a son named Chuck. Yes, that Chuck Jones. He hand made his mother's Christmas cards which we received and had for many years... and did my mom (and dad) archive them? Oh h*ll no.]

    • @LazyIRanch
      @LazyIRanch หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Me too! I wish I could tell people that I'm ace (asexual) and always have been since childhood. I'm female, but a "tomboy" who hates wearing a dress or putting on makeup, and I haven't been to a shopping mall in almost 20 years (my idea of torture!). I'd rather go to an antique car show, or go shopping at the hardware store.
      Most of my family has nothing to do with me because they are extremely religious and they think I'm a lesbian. They don't understand that there's at least 1% of the population that are NOPES! We rarely even think about sex because we have no libido, but I'm not attracted to women OR men. I prefer being around men because we typically have more in common, but I've had wonderful friends who are gay, male and female.
      I've always been naive about sexual matters, a lot of sexual innuendo jokes go over my head and I get teased about that.
      I'm that person at the movies who goes to the restroom or snack bar during the sexy scenes in the film, because I know I won't miss anything important to the plot during gratuitous horn-dog scenes.
