I love a good crock pot chili. Excellent choice for using apples. I use granny smith apple in my Winter Root Vegetable soup. I think it adds an additional enhancement in flavor. Delish! I know what I am using my dried lentils for my next crock pot cooking. Stay warm!
I'm thinking I might want to use one small apple and a small turnip. Turnips cook up really soft and luscious in a crockpot, and they absorb other flavors while keeping just a hint of radishy freshness.
I try not to comment on people's looks/presentation, but it's hard not to notice such a lush and handsome beard (on a guy who can totally pull it off -- not everyone could).
Thanks for such a creative recipe. I had lots of green apples starting to turn, so I made this today but added 1/2 cup chopped walnuts and replaced sugar with 1/4 cup ketsup mannis (dark sweet soy). Both add heaps of umami and did not disappoint! I also replace the apple juice with homemade stock (I always keep batches of stock in the freezer as they add depth to any recipe). Your dish is so warm and comforting . I'm not a vegetarian, but I missed nothing with this chilli. And my pescatarian wife loved it too. Happy, full bellies on a grey rainy summer day! Hi Andrew, just found your channel and watched a few videos. I like the way you present the videos with the conversation and the humour you put in. I am not vegan or Vegetarian but am looking for meals that have health benefits and I think yours fit in there nicely. I’ve not made any yet but am looking to do so soon, I think I’ll be starting with this sweet and Savoury Chili although not sure I can get chipotles in adobo in the UK, but you never know, the internet can provide some gems sometimes.
The most tasty things come in slow cookers and Mason jars! 🙌for the application / use of apple! Loved the use of the dry lentils. The lentils are like a timer. They give us a way of knowing that all those flavors have had enough time to marry. I have made one of your other versions of chili but will FOR SURE be making this one. This recipe would be easy to double and customize. As always... stay amazing and PEEEEEEEAAAAAAAACCCCCE! Just thinking... Would there be a substitution for the apple juice? I feel like the juice could cause blood sugar spikes and be a concern for people who are diabetic or have metabolic disorders. Maybe blend some dates into the vegetable broth? IDK.. just brain storming. Still an amazing recipe!
@@JimmySolution I agree, I think the apple juice might make the chili a bit too sweet for my taste. I was thinking, maybe just double up on the veggie broth?
🙌🏾 great question! just as a reference encase anyone wanted to understand how much juice would be in a serving; its 1 cup of apple juice split into 8 servings so it would be 1oz. per serving (1/8 of a cup or 2 tbsps in a serving). You could let go of the apple juice and do an additional apple and an additional cup of stock. or just the stock, taste at the end, then add maple syrup, date syrup, etc. as desired. You're the best! thanks as always!!!
I made a one-pot chili but i went the super-savory route with root veggies: carrots, onions, celery, mushrooms (TONS of mushrooms) with lots of smoked chile powders (ancho, chipotle, smoked paprika), sage, garlic, thyme, and some cocoa powder. Finished with some truffle oil and i surprised myself that i didnt even miss the meat i forgot to add. Yeah, it's missing protein, but holy hannah was it delicious!

But here he is again. Looking forward to next week’s video.
🙌🏾 hope you get to enjoy this chili soon! My last video was actually old footage. or at least the cooking part of it was old. the talk was up to date! the red head some may say was an ancestor or baby whisk 😂
Chili is contentious in my house, so I don’t make it often enough. Everyone likes it made very differently, so what is a cook to do? Two family members insist it must contain beef of some kind and refuse to even entertain the thought of a single legume or bean in the pot, while the person squarely in the vegetarian camp with me insists that chili must be spicy enough to melt the spoon. Same with one of the non-bean eaters, while I cannot eat any spicy food because of a GI disease. So I, being the kind cook that I am, make 2 pots - 1 beany and 1 beefy. Hot peppers are soaked in vinegar for the chili heads to scorch their palate and I’ve made 4 people happy. I like your recipe and definitely want to compare it to my current beany chili, which I found on a British website. I find that amusing since chili is such a quintessentially American food, but it worked. And it contains Asian pears, which is definitely not American. Wish me luck.
I would guess so, except if you're using canned beans, you should definitely rinse them first before adding them - it reduces the sodium content by something like 75%.
You can certainly control the amount of sodium in this recipe very easily. I'm not sure if you're aware, but there is no salt canned beans. I get them at Walmart but they are available at most grocers. Same with some of the other ingredients, they have potential to be no salt also. You can make the recipe as is without any added salt, and then at the end, taste it, and only add what would be under the threshold for you to have or none if that's best. here is the recipe - makeitdairyfree.com/vegan-apple-chili/
