  • The overwhelmingly positive response to my Enterprise bridge Blender build has been amazing. Early on in the process, I started recording my Blender and Photoshop work using OBS. All told I have about 36 hours of recordings; the whole thing took about 50 hours over the course of 2 months. A lot of late nights.
    I hope you all like this video. I know the Blenderheads will. Personally, I have always loved watching Blender timelapses. Let me know in the comments if you'd be interested in seeing a long timelapse of the whole process. I estimate I could get it down to an hour or two without it going too fast to see what I'm doing.
    You will see my struggles and triumphs, my typos and mistakes. Didn't catch til very late in the process that the accordian keyboards said "RETRV MODE" not "RETRY MODE" lol. You'll see me redo things I didn't like and finally find solutions to things I just couldn't figure out.
    The whole process was a learning experience because before this year I'd never really tried my hand at actually modelling and texturing things in Blender. I'd only used it to create animations with models someone else made. And while that certainly required skills I had to learn, modelling this bridge (and subsequently the transporter room, corridors, and other parts of the ship you have yet to see) was a self-challenge and one I think I met.

    "Would you watch a time-lapse" FuqnA ""How long would..." 13.5 inches "Do you have any questions..." Yes, all of them. That said, FABULOUS and thank you for sharing this art!

    As I've said before... just the BUTTONS on the helm/nav console. Wow.

    this looks great, i sure have to say but if you would just show theentire timeline lon how we could make such a stunning design on blender that would have been just so great. all the same its dope. i like it.

      Thanks! I did create a video of everything I recorded while making this. You can see that here: th-cam.com/video/7rRI8QUH9lc/w-d-xo.html
      At the risk of boring you with a long reply, I'm going to bore you with a long reply lol
      This was very much a learning process for me. I've been tinkering with Blender for about 3 years now but really only used it for animations and used models made by others. I hadn't tried with any sincerity to do any modeling of my own as I found it intimidating and as Blender was really more of a hobby it wasn't as much of a priority. I had found a good model online for free of the TMP bridge but it didn't have any texturing or details; it was a rough outline of the bridge and stations but no buttons or anything. The lack of 3D animations or fan made videos featuring the refit bridge made we wonder if I could somehow 'finish' the bridge model I found. I knew Photoshop very well; as a photographer I've used it for almost 30 years.
      In creating textures for the bridge I just came to find it wasn't perfect and this thought kept nagging me; what if I tried to create the bridge myself? I had certainly watched enough tutorials on various aspects of modeling over and over again, tinkering here and there. But I'd never really challenged myself with a build project of any substance. And then one day, I said "It's time" and started modeling. I actually started with the turbolift with plans to add it to the bridge model I had downloaded. That was fun and it turned out really well (have a separate video on creating the turbolift) though I admit the turbolift was pretty easy since it was basic shapes. Then I decided to do more modeling for the bridge.
      At first my plan was to just replace the helm and move stations around to where they were in Star Trek II (this was the TMP bridge I downloaded and some of the stations changed from TMP to TWOK). I started with the helm because its unique shape presented some huge challenges, especially for an amateur. The swept up sides kept creating bad geometry for me so I was constantly watching and rewatching tutorials. I finally got it but it wasn't til after I'd made the helm that it occured to me to start recording it.
      As I progressed with modeling the various stations, at some point I just decided to completely scrap the model I'd found and create the whole bridge myself from scrap. I still ran into challenges and you can see in the whole video but eventually worked through them. Along the way I had to learn about texturing and UV editing, then working on giving things a 'worn' look as one critique said everything was too pristine and perfect. Which made sense. And an animation series I want to do would entail this Enterprise being a little 'worn and torn' after Kirk's second 5-year mission but before Star Trek II (spoilers). The weapons station alone was a challenge because of its unique shape. I redid it twice.
      The success of this bridge build and the overwhelming positive response has been a good motivator to keep going. So I created some corridors. Then I did the transporter room, which I recently finished then got a new book (Mr. Scott's Guide to the Enterprise) and found out the transporter room has a little lounge and a bathroom so I'll be revisiting that one. Right now I'm working on Engineering for the TWOK Enterprise as well as starting on the TOS bridge. I'm recording everything as I go.

    I would love to see a timelapse of the entire build process. I'd say to make it about a half an hour to 45 minutes.

    I like that it shows getting OUTCOMES by doing things like sinking submodels into the geometry and not getting hung up on being CAD perfect, though confusing without seeing the source reference being riffed on.
    Long timelapses for software, especially deep software, only ever seem useful if you already have some minimum expertise in that software on par with the creator.
    Otherwise commentary, or highlights of issues and techniques and efficiency go much further but take even more time to make.
    But always room for more 2nd monitor content out there as I think shorter formats might be harder to compete in on youtube /shrug.

      Thanks! You can definitely see my struggles. On some of the other recordings I've done I did include a window with my PureRef window.
      I'm by no means an expert and sometimes am surprised it turned out so well!

    I love this, The best I've done so far is model the bridge chairs from TMP. I have a few questions about building the set.
    - Did you model the bridge walls as segments to make it easier to redress for different ships or is the entire wall structure just one piece modeled only to be the Enterprise?
    - How did you model the turbolift alcoves and doors and how well do they work for animation?

    • @robbetz
      @robbetz  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks! I started out with TMP chairs as you can see but changed them over.
      The bridge walls were actually pretty simple; just a large cylinder, then I used a UV sphere and boolean modifier to carve out the interior so that walls would curve. Then used simple extruded planes to create the notches. I created it solely for this bridge but the process should be simple enough to repeat for other ships.
      The alcoves for the turbolifts were created using booleans as well; I know for sure I have that on video because I saw it as I was piecing together footage for this video last night. They work great for animations.
      On a side note I posted a video a while back on creating the turbolifts themselves.

    The lighting really makes that scene. It's pretty low poly

      @robbetz  หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ErichToven lighting always makes a scene. 😜
      It’s low poly because it can be. The TNG ships were more complex shapes. Those will definitely need more geometry. The tos era was boxy. And beautiful.

    • @ErichToven
      @ErichToven หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@robbetz Well technically that ship was designed by the tng production crew. So the beautiful and boxy argument doesn't really apply. Needless to say the lighting is good.

      @@ErichToven the irony is that TNG reused a lot of sets from the tos era; hallways, the transporter room, and a few others.

    Can also make Enterprise-A bridge from Star Trek 6 and Klingon Bird of Prey Bridge?

      Hey Roger, I can sure try. Right now I'm working on other parts of the Conni refit and the TOS bridge, but the A is on my list since it will be a modification of this bridge.
