If your performance is too good in an audition, you're not gonna make it. I even heard some idols were told not to dance too well but act more nonprofessional average girl. Same here! I am a native Argentinian (a very westernized country) who listen to J-Music almost exclusively (specially 2000s J-Pop) while my friend from Osaka loves more the Western music (specially McCartney).

Musume and SMAP are from the 2000s but the main scene of that time Is mainly female singer-songriter and popstars like Ayumi Hamasaki (my fav), Hikaru Utada (my 2nd fav), Mai Kuraki, Mika Nakashima, Yo Hitoto or Shiina Ringo (this woman is a godness of music!). The first two experimented huge success and become mainstream even in other countries, also entering in the list of best selling female artists of all time in the world.

It seems like a lot of the music that is popular in the west is also popular in Japan. There's even a number of Japanese artists who are in the scene of typically American/western music genres. While trap and similar rap styled music isn't my cup of tea usually, It's interesting that it's pretty popular in Japan, or at least Osaka. Always nice to get some new bands/singers to listen to, and I love the variation of music in this kind of video!
I know this has been said before, but this is such a simple concept, but the editing just *makes* it. The incorporation of the song and the album cover, it’s all just so aesthetically pleasing that these videos are so fun to watch :)
