There are loads of toll roads in France so we bought a toll tag from emovis. It's brilliant, you only pay when you use it and the money is deducted in one payment at the end of the month. You can then just drive through the tolls without stopping. We got one for Spain but there are not many toll roads so not worth it. They made the motorway that runs down the east coast toll free a couple of years ago.

And if you are going to use toll roads, get yourself the emovis tag, stick it in the windscreen and breeze through all the tolls without clambering around witth tickets and cards. Its all done on direct debit, simple to set up, not expensive, just £5 a month IF you use it. Great if you travel alone as I do.
Its Emovis Tag UK Ltd. Obviously all in English.

As a truck driver myself I'd warn you about built up areas, often there won't be a speed limit sign, just the name of the village in red, that's usually 30kph

Don't forget if you go on roads with tolls the pay Booth will be on your left side of the van so you will have to hop across to the passengers seat to pay!

France is good, lots of places to overnight, lots of local villages have one or two place pitches, even supermarkets have certain facilities. I have lived here over 30yrs, have fun.

Get the ‘BipnGo’ toll tag. It does France/Spain/Portugal/Italy…. Works wonderful. We spend 4 or 5 months every year in Europe (Irish passports) …. Relax, don’t rush, slow down & enjoy. It’s wonderful, much easier and different to the UK/ Ireland. Oooh, corkscrew, don’t forget the corkscrew !

  • @Work-less-Vanlife-more

Get in practice for jumping into the passenger seat and reaching out the window with your credit card to pay for tolls then jumping back in the driving seat 😂
Ohh and remember as your in Portugal now you’ve started your 90 days in the Shengen EU area out of your 180 day limit 👍🏼

Have a great trip Darren, you will love it. You will see how much better set up for motorhomes and campervans the rest of Europe is. Our tip would be to do a comparison each day of your route for both Toll and Non-Toll and as long as you have the time and the mileage isn't ridiculously longer take the non toll wherever possible. You will get to see so much more.

Refillable gas plenty of solar etc. As for France lived and travelled around France for many years ( you can never run out of places to see, a stunning Country).
As for parking there are over 2500 Aires, but if safe to do so, you can park pretty much where you want. If you have a problem ask a French person, and if you can speak a few words, most French will speak some English. We will be back in France in a month or so but now travelling down through Spain to visit Family. Spain is now following France for Aires and stop overs. we are now parked up at Carrefour with free electric, water, waste and cassette emptying points . 72 hours allowed.

Near Amsterdam -Vijfhuizen- you have a good camperpark N205 close to the city for 15 euro a night. With water and electricity.
I stayed there many times. And you don't have to go on the ringway. Cause yhats green air zone.

Not going on French toll roads will take a long time to travel through France but that could be a good thing. The toll roads can be expensive though like bloody Greece where we're at now. A bit of both would be good, tolls and more country roads. Have a good time. X

However we are not You Tubers so not sure how uploading affects things costs, restrictions. We were in Europe this time last year and the heat was really hard work so hope you don't get a heatwave on your travels. Safe travels.

Hi Darran. I reckon you will have a wonderful time in Europe. You have the right attitude to life and everything in it. The different countries and foods they offer and the different people you will meet, 99% are friendly as you like. I’ve been going over to Europe since my dad had a VW camper. Only thing I would advise is keep hold of your documents and money as safe as possible. Not in obvious places but hide it well when going for a walk or any reason you might have to stop. But take care and enjoy!

  • @samm4265

My top tip for driving in France - look up how to use French roundabouts, France have several different types and vehicles have different priority rights depending on markings and signs on approach. They are not all like UK, sometimes you have to give way to people pulling onto the roundabout, you will soon get beeped at if you forget. Other tip on country roads is always assume a car will cut a corner on a blind bend. traffic is less but drivers are more erratic and do not look beyond hood when driving. Also many small towns, villages will have priority from right signs [meaning vehicles may pull out onto road in front of you] signs are a yellow diamond with black line through it [yellow diamond without a black line means you have priority], the fine is 135euros if caught not following this road rule. I am sure you will find driving in the EU a joy and less stress in finding a park up for the night. safe travels.

I live in the south of France and every town with a population over 5,000 in France have a shower block for anyone to use for a small fee, just don't go on a Friday as some can be very busy if that town has a high muslim population. I will say the one near my house has been closed since Covid but apparently every town by law has to have a shower block if the population is bigger than 5.000 people so i have been told. Great for wild campers who don't have a shower in their van.

You should be terrified. My campervan will get back to the UK repair shop on Monday, fingers crossed. The repatriation process has taken 40, yes, 40 days, and mine is just a long wheel base van. Yours would present more problems.
Repaired, recon, or new gearbox in the UK, £1000, £1600, & £2000. The French wanted €4000 to €6000 Euros.
So yeh, I be very worried. Myself, I'd be very relectant to venture into the EU again.

Anyway, you will need deep pockets if you have a breakdown on your euro trip, I had a break down in france and had to pay 250 euros for a small rubber hose that had burst on my cars engine, I had to wait for 4 days for the hose to arrive at the local car dealer, as my car, (Astra), was classed as a foreign car..... Luckily my european breakdown cover included hotel costs while waiting for the repair to be sorted. Best of luck and have a good trip. Richie

Daz, I bought a new MH in Germany in 2021 at 73. I set off on my first trip around Europe for a year. Last year I went to England for the first time just because my Schengen days ran out and I needed to wait until I got some back. I did the same in Croatia (now in Schengen) Turkey, Bulgaria and Cyprus. Believe me, England was the hardest and most unfriendly place out of the whole. The rest was so friendly and easy. I had 3 police knocks. They used Google Translate. They gave their first names. They were friendly. One was to tell me to lock my bike as I wasn't in a safe place. All were to help me, not to make me move on. Diesel, Ad Blue pumps and LPG at all gas stations. My motto was Find a Lidl. Can park up for a few hours, unbovvered. Head for graveyards for parking and water. I'm in Portugal now. Loving it.

Hi Darran, for your first stock up on food it’s got to be the Hypermarket at Grande Synthe, not far from Calais & just off the motorway at Dunkeque, large car park so you will fit in without any problems. I think John & Mandy stopped there when they arrived in France last week. If it’s the first Hypermarket you’ve been to your in for a treat 😊
