    I wish that Herminia series wasn't so expensive. If I could go without eating for an entire year, I would buy all of them. 😂

    I like this format, showcasing a few commentaries at different levels for a single book of the Bible. Great overview and much appreciated!

      Thanks, I'm glad you liked it. I plan on incorporating these kind of videos on a regular basis.

    Great video as always. As a huge fan of R. T. France (especially in Matthew and Mark) I was quite disappointed by his Hebrews volume. It's still very good in many ways but his view on the warning passages was bizzare. He says that some scriptures teach clearly that no believer can fall away and yet Hebrews teaches they can. He then comments that he's happy to accept they are both true (even if contradictory).
    I love Rick Phillips volume in the Reformed Expository Commentary series and prefer it to Kent Hughes (though I understand your video is based on reviews). F. F. Bruce is still superb even though it has been replaced.
    I was disappointed by O'Brien's volume being understandable discontinued as it was without parallel in many ways. Agree on other comments about Hughes.
    There aren't many academic review of John Owen's multi-volume commentary because of age but it is truly wonderful!

      Thank you, OT. You are well-read when it comes to Hebrews commentaries! I truly believe this book suffers from an embarrassment of riches when it comes to commentaries. So many scholars are interested in Hebrews and readers benefit from their labor.
      France is criticized in reviews for his approach to Hebrews 6. I'm sure he would have benefitted from more space. The REBC overall has some gems, but certain commentaries in the series suffer from the publisher controlling the size of each volume.
      It will be interesting to see how Eerdmans/Carson replace O'Brien's Hebrews volume. The series is unpredictable in relation to releases. I believe two volumes are on their second editions, but other books (e.g. Revelation) don't even have a first edition yet!

    One negative point: I miss the Gareth Cockerill volume on the NICNT series.

      Hi Julio, thanks for the comment. :) I love the Word, too. Commentaries are great, but Scripture is greater!

      @@BestBibleCommentaries what do think of gareth lee cockerill on hebrews?

    • @BestBibleCommentaries
      @BestBibleCommentaries  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a well-reviewed commentary. My first thoughts about it are: (1) It's tough to follow a classic, i.e. F.F. Bruce. However, more than one academic reviewer pointed out that they thought Cockerill dealt with Old Testament texts better than Bruce. (2) For some, it may come down to theology. Cockerill is Wesleyan and not surprisingly the volume is well-reviewed by Arminians, but others praise it too. (3) Cockerill has a high view of Christ, so conservatives will like it even if they don't agree with every theological point.

    Not sure how you would classify the commentary but A COMMENTARY ON THE EPISTLE TO THE HEBREWS by Phillip Edgcumbe Hughes is not only beautifully written but (with Bible in hand and help of the Holy Spirit) thrilling to the soul. One of my favorite commentaries.

      I have nothing negative to say about it! You aren't alone if loving that volume. I am personally very interested in discussions on the author of Hebrews (perhaps a little obsessed!) and Hughes's volume is noteworthy for his Barnabas argument. Two thoughts: (1) the book of Hebrews has an abundance of well-reviewed volumes, more so than other books, even with Peter O'Brien's being pulled from the shelves, and (2) I admit -- this is perhaps a weakness of academic reviews in general -- reviewers tend to favor commentaries that interact with the latest biblical scholarship. Hughes' volume is of course a little older than some of the others on the list. I think academic reviews are still the best for developing aggregate reviews like I do, but sometimes classic volumes lose a little attention in the process.

    I thought Gareth Lee Cockerill replaced Bruce's?

    • @BestBibleCommentaries
      @BestBibleCommentaries  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are correct, but people can still get Bruce's volume either used or the publisher (Eerdmans) still publishes classic volumes even after they have been replaced in a series. Here is Bruce's Hebrews volume, which is just called "Eerdmans Classic Biblical Commentaries": amzn.to/3nlxdq3 but it's the same content as the NICNT volume.

    I am elated that you made a content on the best Hebrews commentaries according to level of rigor. This was because I have been reading up on commentaries for the past few days about the Letter to the Hebrews and I am so fascinated with what Bible study leaders, pastors, and even academics use for their study of this Epistle.
    With this, may I request for a content? If I may, would you please make a commentary series review of the Hermeneia and the International Critical Commentary (I.C.C.) series? Iʼve read through several reviews of those online and I am fascinated by their said rigor as resources.
    I would love to know your insights on those and I will definitely watch and appreciate it if you would create one.
    God bless you, Pastor! To God be the glory.

      Hi Nikko! Thanks for the comment. I'm glad the Hebrews video is helpful. Yes, I will put some thought into doing a comparison on the ICC and Hermeneia. Thank you for the suggestion!
