That Director should have been named and shamed if not just sent to jail... at the very least stopped from directing ever again. To force an adult woman to weight the same as a 11 year old is just wrong. And how the chinese authorities permit this is beyond understanding. But hey, this is a price that apparently these actors are willing to put up with. Still I think they should be laws to stop this brutality but not surprised there are none, when their own citizens/fans demand from them impossible standards. The person who wrote that article I hope it was sued 3 times over. Ever so easy to bully someone via net when you are fat and ugly yourself, and could not reach those standards in a million years!

He already started to use his voice in 3 projects and he will continue to improve, challenge, develop, and excel as one of the best actors in China with or without people like you. And doctors were so concerned. I could see all my rib bones. My underpants were too big for me. I looked healthy at 50 but 45 made a huge difference. Another problem is i gained 15 kg in 6 months after being released from the hospital. I heard it is because body goes into survival mode and starts turning everything into a fat and storing it. My metabolism was never the same again. I was one of those people who never gained a weight despite eating a lot. But now i gain weight just by breading. Actors and actresses that go into extreme diet probably would face similar problem. You start gaining a weight much easier.

I think even if the more supreme pure being, or an actual God was cast in one of these dramas, the people who complain would find something wrong with them and complain about that. The complainers just look for anything to complain about, because it makes them feel better.
The actors do a brilliant job and they express their emotions clearly on their faces. So even if I can't get subtitles, I can still kind of figure out what's going on just by watching their expressions. And not the big expressions, the little side eye, the tiny smile, that teeny movement of one eyebrow, a head tilt. My favourite actor is Dylan Wang. He nails it.

I would imagine absolutely everyone on set works their butts off. If the ML has to be up at 4 am to begin makeup, makeup staff have to be up at least that early. Also Chinese dramas pack so much in to a very limited time line, production-wise. One thing I always notice, is how fatigued the main actors are by the end of the series. It's punishing. I appreciate everyone's contribution to the entire result. It would be so much better if they took better care of everyone. Not everyone is replaceable.

This is the reason why I love costume drama more. It is never for the faint hearted actors. A lot of discipline and skills like martial arts needs to be perfected. The weight aside from looking good in the costume is probably also due to the many liftings to mimic flying. They can't be heavy then suspended or flying in mid-air. The dizzying heights where they sometimes are dropped from is enough to make your body shiver. So yeah, I love costume drama very much.

As for the wigs.....shouldn.t a scientifically advanced country be able to develop some healthier products to fix wigs? Do they have netcaps underneath to protect natural hair? Where are the potions to heal the scalp?.........considering all the circumstances described it is amazing how perfect the performances are both from male and female actors. Awsome !

Probably the difference between costume dramas and more serious daily life dramas. If you see chinese drama with modern village, daily life settings, none of them are "attractive". They are just very realistic portrayal of average chinese low to mid class people, their daily life struggle, toxic asian parents e t.c. Costume dramas are "less serious" and until recently they were low budget with less experienced actors and actresses. All they had to do was to look "pretty" in pretty costumes. Now costume dramas are gaining popularity and casting big actors but peoples views are still the same. It is all about visuals

I know this will not contribute to prevent male and female actors having to go through these tortures. This will only happen when enough netizens object to their idol being subjected to pressure to lose weight, being made to wear heavy wigs and headpieces and tight costumes while swinging themselves and heavy weapons in the air. Have these prop departments ever heard of plastic, nylon, silk? Netizens should stop criticizing actors' looks and shame production companies and directors instead.

Thank you to the actors who go through so much pain and agony. I wish there could be a better option that is less damaging and less painful. I wish they could have regulations so they have better times while acting. We are very appreciative of their hard work. Ignore the netizens, listen to the rest of the world. You are all fantastic.

I feel so bad for what the actors have to go through. Seriously, hair transplants in a young man because the wigs damaged so much hair?!
I don’t blame some actors for refusing costume dramas.
It’s just wrong that social media is so harsh on the actors. They should be allowed to eat and have normal healthy bodies. Anorexia is not a good look

Damn, they need be unhealthily thin and eat less, but they still need to have enough stamina and be strong enough to carry heavy ass props, while being suffocated by layers of clothing and heavy wigs for long periods of time, and still face getting bashed by netizens. Period dramas are amazing but the actors have to suffer such inhumane conditions.

I hope this makes it through to the actors in these dramas. If your scalp is suffering because of the glue and the alcohol from the wigs, please use castor oil after removing it all. It rubs in quickly, dries so you don't see an oily residue, and will help you keep your hair. It feels very soothing and healing. I was losing my eyebrows on the outside of the arch, and they are filling in, now that I've begun using castor oil. It's good for hair, eyebrows, eyelashes, AND wrinkles and dark spots. There are other things it's also good for, but those are the things I know of. I'm sure you can pay for more expensive items, but this is simple, and it works. Love your dramas. Sorry you suffer so much.

To heal a very large wound, I had to have dressing changes everyday, sometimes twice a day. Consequently, I'm now allergic to the adhesive in bandaids. Even little ones can give me large blisters. I totally understand what the actors go through with the adhesive used in wearing wigs.

When on a live set and working with weather conditions, scene transitions, production costs and hours to complete the assigned scenes(set designs, wardrobe, makeup, stunts, and so on)is taxing on actors/actresses and all those involved in the production. I have much respect for the work that goes into creating masterpieces especially with these cultural dramas. What are the safety protocols in China for these productions? Is there a board of directors or governing body to protect (actor/actress insurance liabilities, safety checks, stunt coordination, etc)?

It seems taxing to act in costume dramas I feel sorry for the actors especially the women weighed down by heavy headpieces I never realized just how much sacrifice actors have to make for their craft and our entertainment. Thank you very much I appreciate your hard work as I really enjoy the genre especially xianxia and wicks which I presume is even more difficult than normal historical period dramas due to its heavy fantasy emphasis. As I enjoy these dramas more than modern dramas I hope you can continue with your hard work and again I thank you for your sacrifice. However, I do believe that those involved in the making process of these wonderful dramas can exert more effort in finding solutions to the problems faced by the actors is there no way of creating realistic but less heavy hardware, weapons etc, as for costumes can't the visual effect of clothing layering be achieved without actually having to wear the layers it's hard to believe that special effects has advanced so much yet no solution has been found to these basic problems facing actor. In my opinion it should not be a sacrifice to be borne by actors who already have a heavy workload in acting but these problems should be solved by those making and profiting the most use some finances in finding solutions and those representing actors should exert pressure on them to do so for the health and benefit of the actors.

thank you for your report here. I know all this stuff since few years, because I tried to understand how all the process of making a good costume drama has to take care of. Indeed is a very very big challenge for those actors, and it is heavy regulated by almost unreasonable contracts between the production's team and the actors. They earn lot of money, but pay a huge, huge tribute for that. Sometime, or often, it is at expenses of their own health and good state of mind. More than this, there are thousand of netizens willing to destroy you whatever you do, and not because you are really mediocre at acting (which in same case it could be possible indeed), but because you do not look good enough in their ill expectations!!! So, it is gruesome... To add something to the phisical heaviness and sacrifice, there is also the impossibility (to 90% ??) to have a private life... They cannot have it, because they work 6 and hald day a week, and because they are spoiled all the time by fans and netizen and paparazzi. No time for themselves, no time to build a true relationship, no time for nothing... only get prepared for the shooting, and again and again...
