Buck Owens and his band was supposed to be there, but they couldn’t make it, so Merle’s band filled in. For some reason, Merle couldn’t make it though. Got to meet Robert Fuller and get his autograph.

Of all the people who've sung Sam Antonio Rose, I prefer Merle Haggard. He makes it his own!

I remember my Dad playing San Antonio Rose on the phonograph when he learned the Air Force was transferring him to Randolph A.F.B just outside of San Antonio in 1954. I was so excited to be moving to the city of the Alamo! I still love my adopted hometown!

This is well done but I prefer Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys version - featuring that fantastic honey-tonker Al Strickland on piano!! Gee that man has more soul in his little finger than.... and it may be that this band is backing Merle up, right here. They don't give Strickland a chance to shine but I'm thinking its him on the keys. In any case, this is sweet!
