    I tried getting back into Quake Live, but man, my wrists are just not what they used to be. Great review btw.

    5:30 - I'm like the same way. Sure, I play competitive multiplayer Quake. But I enjoy the visuals and simply having fun.
    A side from that, I like how you review the base game along with some mods to enhance the experience. I honestly never heard of these mods until now.

    it pains me to see how new generations use rockets in an arena shooter, or rather has no clues in how to use them. you are suppose to shoot the rockets to the ground near your opponents, not directly at them.

    For anyone who's confused on which engine to use: Spearmint is primarily for singleplayer use or couch splitscreen, ioquake3 is for mods and online.

    Quake 3 Arena is more of a strategy game, UT is more of a reflex shooter. Now you mentioned CPMA and CPMA is more of a reflex shooter than UT. Quake Live came out during the era of strategy games like Dota and LoL, and it too had more emphasis on strategy as it adopted Quake 3 Arena's gameplay over CPMA's. It doesn't mean UT and Quake aren't comparable, but it just means that if you were more interested in outsmarting your opponent versus strictly being a mechanical beast, there is more consistency for you in Quake 3\Quake Live. So, what are the underlining differences between Quake and UT?
    1. Items... they respawn sooner, and there are far more items to pick up. The Red Armor\Heavy Armor and Mega Health are so powerful, and they respawn close to half a minute after being taken. At the same time, there are typically 1-4 more Armor pickups and HP pickups around the map. Quake is VERY item heavy, while UT offers a few items but really fun fighting. What do items actually do? Well, the guy that can move faster or is closer to the next respawning item after fights can regain any HP\Armor lost from damage. This is almost like infinite health because it offers that particular player the opportunity to keep fighting while the opponent is having to run.
    2. Weapons... the weapons are mainly overpowering in Quake if they are used properly. They are used mainly to deter predictable movement and bad positioning. Whereas in UT the weapons are designed specifically for aggression and defensiveness. In Quake, the weapons are best used with positioning. So that means that there is no perfect aggressive nor defensive player in the game that plays without positioning. Quake eSports is very artsy for that reason, every fight looks familiar. Almost every gunfight is planned to the location that suits your weapon choice.
    3. Movement... UT is slow in map navigation, Quake is slow in combat. Players in UT put more emphasis on dodging, while Quake players put more emphasis on positioning and navigation speed. Probably one of the first reasons why people generally see Quake 3 as less of challenge. The AI are kind of dumb, the movement in Quake seems simple.
    So... overall... it is personal preference. I like both just as much as the other, but I personally find Quake to be more satisfying. There is far more consistency in winning in a game that is mostly about strategy. Less so in a game that is solely coordination. But then again, UT is super fun for the combat pace itself. I wish there was a game with both disciplines in mind, but that would be too cool for the rest of the world to accept.

    I remember in 99 in an internet cafe with my buddies we were playing Q3A on LAN,great cafe, it was in the basement, the walls were painted like motherboards and it shone soft ultraviolet light, and on top of that the owner had a music store so there was always some good music playing, we used to go there every day to play Q3 , I always had to watch the trailer before the game, I had to tune on, great memories, 15 buddies telling each other that they are a piece of shit, great times😄👍✌️

    This guy didn't even use the jump key. Half of Quake's fun comes from movement; 75% of CPMA's fun comes from movement; it's no wonder this guy thinks UT is better; it's not. That's also why he didn't like the larger maps. Obviously, the fact that AI isn't smart enough to use Quake's movement and play the game mode means the maps will feel empty, even if you do know how to quickly traverse them.

    • @Gamingpastime64
      @Gamingpastime64  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The main reason I think UT is better because it gives the player more control over customization. But that has nothing to do with CPMA. I knew going into the mod that it was designed for competitive play. I prefer UT over Quake 3 in terms of fun factor, not in terms of competitive play.

    spearmint is not worth using as it is incompatible with almost 90 percent of map packs and mods out there, even vanilla is unplayable with this being the case

  • @InnuendoXP
    @InnuendoXP 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Yeah I'd say Unreal Tournament is more feature-complete, and has more interesting weapon design and more diversity in its art direction.
    That said, I much prefer Quake's movement mechanics, sound design, and the weapons, while not as interesting as UT's, feel much more punchy and solid.
    UT's movement mechanics have their own subtle technicalities, but dodging and juggling the translocator with your weapons just feels fiddly to me and not satisfying like circle-jumping, strafe-jumping and rocket boosting - and the crouch-sliding in Quake 4 and Quake Champions (as Slash).
    The Unreal-Engine multiplayer FPS that nailed a different and satisfying movement system for me were the Tribes games.

    Quake Live does have an """""""""active""""""""" multiplayer scene. It is better than Quake 3 where a good amount of the time it's hard to find a game to hop into because a lot of players idle in spectator mode for some reason, boosting up the servers player count when in reality no one's playing. Best way to get into Quake multiplayer is to join the official discord, and then join more discords. And then find a guru in the Quake mountains to teach you all the mechanics passed down for generations. Also, Quake3e fixes aspect ratio issues but also allows you to play multiplayer and mods.

    Hi mate, I noticed that you might be using an old package of CPMA which might be why you don't have some CA maps. Feel free to head on over to www.discord.me/CPMA , those dudes can help out. The game's reputation has changed a bit in it's "eliteness" and I think you really might enjoy CTFS(CaptureStrike) with real players. Also yes, you can change the enemy model and color in CPMA.

    • @Gamingpastime64
      @Gamingpastime64  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Oga this review was made over a month ago but I did download the mod from the CPMA website. Maybe we should have downloaded it from a different location? I didn't see any options to change bot colors but good to know it can be done with a command. I didn't think about that.

    • @maggiekarp90
      @maggiekarp90 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, the one on playmorepromode is outdated. The package we have on discord is more updated/easier use to for new players overall. The default config is quite decent for new players to start off with in comparison and it includes multiple maps that we play nowadays. Including the OJ maps for CTFS which has truly revolutionized CaptureStrike. The discord also has a FAQ that actually tells you how to change the bot colors too.

    I am bored to death by vanilla Q3, and I basically only play mods. That's the advantage that Q3 and games of that era had over Quake Live, Quake Champions, and other modern shooters.

      Even if I prefer the gameplay and the filling of Q3, I would say that UT is way more diverse than Q3 (even if you take QT in consideration). UT has more intersting weapons, more intersting maps, more orginal and funny game modes etc... UT is just a better game if you look at the big picture. If I want to play some deathmatch, Q3/QuakeLive is clearly the best. If I want good capture the flag or long playtime with a lot of players, I would choose UT.

    • @powderhungry6611
      @powderhungry6611 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      UT is more of a mechanically driven game, with less emphasis on positioning and item management. It is very fun, very hard, but at the same time it is sort of dumbed down. I had a friend from Unreal try Quake Live for the first time, he is really good at UT but struggled with Quake. He complained that the guns are overpowered. Well, the truth is... they sort of are. But, because of that reason, it makes it more important to approach opponents and items in a more intelligent way. Otherwise, you're gambling against being out damaged and duped. I suppose UT is a game about reflexes and skills while Quake is more of a game about decision making and positioning. Most fights are pretty much fought standing relatively still in Quake, whereas in UT most fights are fought moving relatively fast. It is just that in Quake the player that uses the better weapon and has better positioning typically wins fights.
