Will be sending this to my son.
He is in the guild of St. Stephen as an Alter Boy.
This will help him understand better the story of St. Stephens martyrdom

I see in Acts 6 he was Ordained a Στέφανος (Deacon) "They had these men stand before the Apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them" (Acts 6:6)

Hard way to die. But as Christians, if we don't die a happy death (fruit of the rosary), then the next best thing is to die as martyrs, proclaiming that Jesus is King and LORD, and forgiving our executioners.

I read somewhere that it was the absent of authority (governor) for two years Stephen's martyrdom was carried out. After Pontius Pilate, there is just an overseer and not a governor.

Actually, Marcellus seems to be Pilate's successor as Governor (not the character from the Robe, but another Marcellus). Remember the governor lived in Caesarea Maritima and only came to Jerusalem during major pilgrimage feasts. He had a palace there, but primarily stayed in a palace in Caesarea. I don't recall Acts mentioning that St. Stephan's martyrdom occurred during a feast, so the governor would have been in Caesarea, like when St. Paul was brought there for his protection a few decades later, at the end of Felix's time and then into Festus' time as governor. So maybe the Sanhedrin felt more at liberty to at least not stop this stoning in Jerusalem. Plus, St. Stephen was hardly as famous as Jesus, as Dr. Pitre mentioned.

@@paulmiller3469 But a capital punishment is a capital punishment whether one is famous or not. Reading and hearing from many biblical scholars makes us get lots of perspective. Thank you for your comment. 😊

I've always considered St. Stephen's speech to the Pharisees to be a modern day equivalent of a smackdown. When viewed in that context, it's easy to see why they became enraged. They murdered him on the grounds of blasphemy but they became angry because he spoke hard truth to them that they did not want to hear. St. Stephen, pray for us sinners.

Steven was killed by Paul and others before Paul converted to a new religion which will be called Christianity.

  • @dalelerette206

According to some traditions, St. Stephen was initially tied to a tree and shot with arrows. But I do not recall reading that in the Scriptures. And I suspect that this may be more of a tradition carried on by Medieval artists that had a fixation of tying little boys to trees and shooting them full of arrows.
In case some think I am making fun of St. Stephen, I am not. St. Stephen was stoned to death for supposed blasphemy. And I believe St. Augustine correctly inferred that the guilt of Apostle Paul's approval of St. Stephen's death was later transformed to faith in Christ on the Road to Damascus.
St. Stephen, pray for us. 💝

It was St. Sebastian who was shot with arrows. This is how he has always been depicted in art. Stephen has always been known to be stoned to death.
