  • Today we taste and review Lark Single Malt Whisky and compare it to West Cork 10 Irish Whiskey.

** Can I donate a whisk(e)y for you to review in The Whisk(e)y Vault?
Of course! If you’re interested in making a tax deductible donation towards our whiskey selection, head on over to:
    austinwhiskyvault.com/whisky-d...
    ** What's with the necklaces?
Rex is a whiskey mooch. His necklace is a manifestation of pure glory - forged from the irradiated bones of eagles and wolves. Also a tube sock.
See the origin story here: goo.gl/JMc2Hr
Daniel is a whiskey sommelier. His necklace is a token of his sommelier level, and he trains whiskey sommeliers at The Whisk(e)y Marketing School in Austin Texas.
    **A Whisk(e)y school?
Yup. Here are a few things we believe.
** You don’t have to be a snob to appreciate and love great whiskey.
Whisky and Whiskey (it depends on where it’s from) have been an important part of cultures around the world from time immemorial. Whiskey is a part of the very fabric of Western society, and in most places, is as common and accessible as beer.
Like Jazz and wine, snobs have predictably hijacked whiskey appreciation, spoiling our natural, common connection with it and creating a false dichotomy of “good whiskey” and “bad whiskey.”
It’s time to break through the emotional bias with facts and science. That’s what this school is about.
** The only valid definition of “good” whiskey is “whiskey you like to drink.”
Learning how to share your love of whiskey in a way that connects people to the history and the story has more to do with public speaking and storytelling than it does with facts and tests.
The best way to learn about whiskey and share that love is to drink whiskey and talk about it with friends. Study the history, find the stories, and discover the culture and the methods that have been developed over hundreds of years. That’s what you’ll do when you attend The Whisk(e)y Marketing School.
** You don’t need a marketing degree to learn how to share your love of whiskey with the world.
There's an old saying, "In business, it's not what you know... It's who you know."
Regardless the industry you're in, most people are clumsy and ineffective when it comes to "networking" because they ignore a very important rule - Relationship First, Business Second.
There's a tremendous amount of curiosity about Whisk(e)y today. It's a great excuse for you to gather a group of people who want to have fun and learn something new. The Whisk(e)y School teaches you how to tap into that curiosity, and share your love of whisk(e)y in an unpretentious way. You're demonstrating knowledge, expertise, and an engaging personality - things valued by every gatekeeper, in every industry.
Or would you rather hand out business cards and cross your fingers?

As an australian I can say that our whiskys are delicious but very much overpriced due to the ridiculous taxing of distilleries.
The same high taxes don't apply to the wine and beer industries.
If the australian government were to lift the high tariffs we would see a boom in australian spirits but it's just not viable

So, I have entered the world of mooching. An old coworker had a birthday, and I thought it would be great to give him a bottle of whiskey after finding out he loved scotch. A bottle of Glenlivet 15 caught my eye, and I figured it would be perfect for him.
I promise I did not intend to mooch at first, but upon giving my coworker the Glenlivet, he was excited to try it right away. And that is where I saw an opportunity.
I warned him that if he opened it up right then and there, I would have a glass in my hand, asking for a taste.
The great person he was, he gave me well over a normal pour, beginning what would turn out to be a great night.
Thank you, Rex, for teaching me the ways of the mooch! You have guided me to this moment, and I am forever grateful. I plan to climb the ranks of mooches, and someday find myself with the best of them.
    Oh hey Daniel...
(Kidding! You both a great to watch. I hope all is well.)

Loved this. Lark produce some exceptional whisky. I was there a few weeks ago and tried their latest classic and cask strength releases. Both are absolutely stunning. I will be ordering at least one of each shortly. In the full bottles of course.

Glad you guys liked it! Wish I could say I’m from Tasmania (that would be way more interesting), but Illinois just has some really awesome liquor stores.
Lark does make a full size bottle, but it’s tough to come by and for whatever reason costs about 7 times as much as the 200 ml bottle (something wrong with the math there I think). Great video! Cheers!

George Bevilacqua I haven’t tried it. I saw it in a Single Malt documentary and heard from a few sources that it’s a delicious whiskey. Figured I’d send it in as something interesting and hard to come by.

You guys have really become one of my favourite YT channels at this point. Since just a few weeks i have really started collecting whisky myself and your video's have really teached me allot about whisky in general( i can thank my father for the initial interest). If i had the money i would send you guys a bottle of Auchentoshan Virgin oak (as well as Glenfiddich Vintage cask and Highland Park Valkyrie) which has really become one of my alltime fav's, since i really want to know what your thoughts are on it hehe. Anyway keep up the good work. -A dutch fan

I've been a fan of the channel for some time. Came across it a while back while watching Nick Offerman's "This is not Lagavulin". I haven't had the time to watch all the episodes until recently. Took nearly six days but I've watched every episode! You two have been my best friend since I got my wisdom teeth removed last Wednesday and I had to go back to the dentist Sunday, today and again Thursday (lol) due to some "complications". I am drinking vicariously through you two while my body rest and my whisky sits on the shelves waiting for me. Plus side to all of this, is at least I got some kick ass pain medication to substitute the whisky.

Holy crap I find it fascinating how you find all those scents, flavors, notes etc in that liquid. I smell whiskey/spirits and it makes my throat burn and my brain says 'ouch'. Then again, I may have only ever been exposed to the bad stuff ...usually comes premixed in a can with coke....soooo, there's that. I may have to go to the bottle shop (liquor store) to buy a small sample bottle of something 'good' just to smell it and see if I can smell anything other than burn-y. What have you done to me!! Another great video gents. :-)

Hi Daniel and Rex, I'm new to the world of whisky but I've been watching you two for a while now. I got into whisky after trying Johnnie Walker Double Black and actually liked it. I'm from the Philippines and I was having a hard time finding the things I wanted to try out before I stumbled upon the spirits area of the supermarket in a mall. They had monkey shoulder, jaimeson, and even some bottles of laphroaig (at least from what I saw). I'm planning to get a bottle or two for christmas and I'd love to hear some recommendations from the fine gents.

  • @kyp23

Somehow every whiskey I own just vanishes. I guess that has something to do with the corks....they are not completly sealing the bottles, the whiskey evaporates just out of the damn bottle. Thats a serious issue...the producers of whiskey corks should fix that.
But thx to this show I never run out of new whiskeys to try. So job well done Daniel. You introduced a lot of us here to new and astonishing good whiskeys ( or should I say, ways to burn a lot of money).

Just in case no one has mentioned it in the (at this point) 159 comments:
Tasmania is part of Australia 😄. They are not seperate countries, despite what Daniel is implying by mentioning Lark as Tasmanian whisky and Starward as Australian (made in Melbourne, Victoria, where I live).

Hey you mad blokes. Apologies, I know this is a bit old. I’m glad you enjoyed our Tasmanian drop. We have some ripper whiskies being produced here now, and a myriad of distilleries popping up. Might I suggest a trip right to the bottom of Down Under, to the Apple Isle?
Re your comment on colour. Correct. None of our whisky has caramel, or is chill filtered.
Thank you for the madness you bring to the wonderful world of whisk(e)y. Keep it up!!

Super Long Somm Story post for Daniel! I've really been enjoying the channel and a while back i mentioned i used this as a basis for getting some Rye whiskey for a friend and even gathering some interest among us to plan a whiskey tasting of our own. Well over the long weekend we actually did our fist tasting. I brought about 11 different whiskeys and we decided to whittle it down to five different types for the tasting event.
    Bourbon - Angel's Envy
Scotch - Longmorn 16 (the new one)
    Japanese - Habiki Harmony
    Rye - Angel's Envy
    Irish - Teeling Single Malt
and at the end as a bonus we had some Russel reserve 6 year Rye (which I had given our host as a gift)
The whole process was REALLY fun. We kept detailed notes about all the different flavors we could pick out in the nose, then in the whiskey itself, then after adding a touch of water. If you have any interest I'd be happy to send you some of the notes we made to see what a bunch of first-time, untrained, amateurs can pick out during a tasting but I'll leave it off for now.
In the end i think the general consensus for most of us was that we enjoyed drinking the Angel's Envy Rye the most, but we also really enjoyed the Habiki and the Teeling because they were complex enough that we could get a lot more notes and a lot more variety of notes between the different people tasting them, which was really cool.
It was such a success I've already started selecting new whiskeys for another tasting event when we can all get together again. So far I've picked up some AD Laws as well as a new Basil Hayden's Dark Rye. I think I will look into the episode archives for something in the way of a beginners Islay as well. I would love any suggestions you might have for a good beginners level american whiskey (preferably not bourbon) and/or something maybe Canadian. One of our friend's fathers suggested Snake River Stampede as a Canadian whiskey but I don't know much about it yet.
Thanks for all the wonderful info on the channel and if Rex needs something out of this post he is more than welcome to join our next tasting which should probably net him 6 free whiskeys :)

Watching this the second time through, I was reminded of another whiskey I recently tried at one of my local whisky fests. It's the Cooperstown Classic American, and I got shortbread and lemon cake with butterscotch on the nose.
The palate was sweet with some sour and umami. I didn't sit with it for long, so I'm wondering if it might have some pepper (might be in the savoury flavours).
Overall, I didn't get a lot of complexity from it, but it was a tasty offering.
For those who can't find Tasmanian whisky, I wonder if this one might offer a similar experience...??? I'm not particularly experienced in Irish Whiskey, so not sure how Cooperstown would compare, but if you wanted to try something with biscuits & lemon cake, maybe give it a shot :-)

Hope you saw my comment from yesterday... one possible new story line... "the people" come for Rex, Rex's wife comes on set and Daniel begins to teach her... we get periodic updates on Rex's recovery, him being at home watching the kids with his ankle bracelet that confines him to his home. (Have a female from the academy play the part of of Rex Wife, if real-wife won't do the assignment.) Meanwhile we somehow are shown the video clip of Rex Walking the Plank. Top of building, or find some water somewhere in Texas, or maybe the coast. Pirate ship, Rex walking the plank.
Other idea: Remember J.R. Ewing. Take ideas from the actual historic shows, and Rex needs to be a convincing J.R.
    Cheers!

And, I am not sending you a bottle of Triple A in order for you to do a tasting. You are my going to have to cross the tracks to find it, but you'll be better men for it. Ancient Ancient Age. Guys suggestion: Why don't you do a video on the best whiskey starter package to get into the world of whiskey. In many of your videos you often mention that a particular whiskey would or would not be suitable for beginners. Why not do a video on that concept? BTW I'm missing REX week!! Keep it up and thanks for the show

Hey mark, if you really want some lark, contact me and I’ll see what I can do. It’s one of my favs.
I guess like these guys you could compare it to Irish stuff, I’d say it’s more like a speyside. It has fruity and honey going on. I love it.

I'd love some suggestions on Irish whiskies if you've got any.
I'd buy Irish but most distilleries are owned by foreign countries. I mean, I'll buy an Irish whiskey, Scotch, English (yes, at least one exists), Japanese, Taiwanese, etc, but I won't buy, say, and Irish whiskey from a distillery that's owned by a French or Japanese company or visa versa. Personal politics some might not agree with or care about, but there it is.
Also, I've heard that because of larger corporations snagging up Irish distilleries, they've gone down in complexity and lost a bit of native charm that gave them more uniqueness. Some places like Dingle are cropping up, but they're hard, if not impossible, to get a hold of and not very well known.
If you know about any self owned or newer, more craft Irish whiskies, I'd be all ears.

Hey love the show learned so much from watching. I live in Canada where our bottles are double in price. Would you guys be able to do a review on Gibson Finest 18. The bottle is 90$ and I was wondering if it is worth the purchase. Thanks for the great videos. From your fellow Canadian friend

    • @Gateau
      @Gateau 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Daniel has made commented a few times how Canada loves to hoard their finest whiskies all for themselves and how we only get the bottom of the barrel stuff. I live in Michigan an hour away from Canada and I don't see anything beyond a Canadian Club or Crown Royal. $90 for an 18 year old sounds like it'd be quite the deal though, if I were you - I'd buy it, try it, and report back here or find a bar that at least has it for a single dram to try it.

    • @canadianwhiskysmith6453
      @canadianwhiskysmith6453 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

You've got me curious. I seem to think Gibson has a decent reputation. Not as commercial as CC or Crown, but generally palate friendly. I would guess that it's probably pretty good. Not sure it's $90 good, but I've found younger Canadian whiskies that were at least as expensive (in Alberta), so who knows...? :-)

This is the only way I know to get in touch with you. Google just published an article that a famous store in exclusive part of Paris was burgled and 673000 euros worth of whiskey was stolen probably around $900,000.00 including one bot worth 195000 euro. Of more interest to me though wad the art. Said that French are consuming more whisky per cap and even competitive with Scotland thought you like to know.

One comment suggested more international whiskey and I've got a suggestion: Three Ships.
It's somewhat new, South African, won a lot of awards and not widely available. They used to be sold in the UK but no longer for some reason. I''d contacted Three Ships on their main site and Facebook to no avail, but their SA distributor, vineyardconnection (site is vinoteque .co.za), was very helpful.
Unfortunately, they said America was difficult to get into, but there was a glimmer of hope. There are a handful of airports throughout the US they've had success getting into, of which they provided a list, and if you're willing to go through the hassle you might be able to score some, but it'd require calling the airport, filling out forms, and personally contacting vineyardconnection for a special order. It's something I plan on doing, but requires family in a different state to make the pickup so I gotta get the timing right.
It'd be awesome seeing someone I watch doing a review on this giant logistical nightmare. Did I mention they just released their 15 year?

Just saying Daniel... after remembering something you said in #RexualTension I grabbed a bottle of Laphroaig off my shelf and apologized to it, put ice in my favorite mug and mixed up a glass of Smokey Coke and I hate how good it is. I’m drinking it now imagining the horrified look on the bartender’s face if I ever ordered this anywhere respectable.

I have an engineer friend who went over to Japan for work last week and I asked him to pick me up a few bottles of Japanese whisky and I would pay him back. Since then, he has been sending me photos of him in a whisky bar drinking Yamazaki 12, Nikka 17, Ardbeg An Oa, Caol Ila 12, and Blantons Single Barrel Japanese Bourbon (probably just relabeled with japanese).
Whenever I ask him if he picked me up a bottle of something like Hibiki or a rare Japanese whisky, he said he spent all his money at the bar for the day and can't afford to get it. Is this the definition of reverse-mooching?
