My wife believes that your commentary on my personality is hilarious and exceptionally accurate. I'm compelled to agree with her. Good day to you sirs.
Glenmorangie Nectar D'or was my very first bottle of scotch. Very friendly, floral. It lasted less than an month and was a great introduction to the world of whisky.
Okay. since you're trying a spirit from sweden, more specifically Hven(Ven), you need to hear this completely wierd story involving booze and a moose (yes.). So the Island Ven is in the middle of the strait between Denmark and Sweden, and the early astronomer Tycho Brahe lived and worked there. he was a fantastic astronomer, figured out that the earth was not the center of the universe, mentor to Kepler blablablablabla.... BUT!! he had a pet moose. This is no joke. He had a pet moose for 13 years. On his brothers birthday he brought his moose (because fuck yeah) to the party. The moose drank two buckets of wine and beer, got drunk, broke his leg and died. So don't drink and moose. Except you're Rex. Then It's a great idea.
Daniel is secretly a master mooch, and Rex is an even moochier mooch than we all originally thought... While talking about the Whiskey Vault with a co-worker, and thinking through how your vault operates, we realized that not only do you get the gift bottles for free, but every cost is tax deductible, including your other purchased whiskeys! So, you two are essentially mooching whiskey from the government, and that is the BEST possible thing you could do. Finally government money being used in a useful way! Cheers to you both, you moochie mooches!
Lincoln Slagel you missed a big one. The whole whisky vault before the show, before people started sending in bottles... all that whisky was donated to the vault as part of the school. Sometimes Daniel mentions bottles he has purchased, but he doesn't indicate it's a lot, and he also indicates he keeps them separate. So roughly all the bottles prior to people sending in new ones for the show... Daniel gets to 'try' whatever whisky he want, for free. Almost this whole thing has been free whisky for Daniel. Lastly this is all about free whisky video reviews for us. The 'fabric' of this little universe we're communicating in is about us getting our free videos. We mooch the eye candy. Salancha
Mooch story: I was browsing the whiskey section at the liquor store, trying to decide what to get, when the employee approached me and asked if I would like to sample a few to help make a decision. He proceeded to let me try 4 different brands (tomatin, writers tears, powers, suntori) and when I finally bought one (suntori) I got a 15% discount. It was a glorious day!
People may wonder why this one is the most expensive of the three extra matured - the Sauternes barriques used are Château d'Yquem which LVMH owns - the pinnacle of the category, apparently. It'd be fun to compare nectar dor with kavalan fino and glen moray Chardonnay. Hmm.. Cheers fellas Mark
Daniel, I will stand up for you mate! I think the structure is cool man. Bravo. But yes rex you should get one day. Look at you too negotiating and compromising like adults 😊
So I need some advice a group of my buddies and I throw in around 100 dollars for Christmas and celebrate a whisky Christmas we intend to get 2 bottles around 300 each. What would your suggestions be.... the only caveat is 2 of them can’t handle the luscious girthy mouth feel of a strong smoke. I appreciate any help you can give Rex (and I guess Daniel since you are the “sommelier”.
Daniel and Rex are like two halves of the same brain. One half is full of scholarly knowledge, information and order, the other half is wild creativity with a touch of chaos. One without the other would just not be the same, they are not opposites, they are complimentary. Long live the brain!
Thank you very much for your lecture, but im well aware. Fröccs however is wine with soda, so it is not even comparable to the case of whisky and a few drops of water. He asked a question and i had an answer its simle as that. Its my oppinion, and my experience. Water changes the nose a little, but kills the taste since its way too smooth as i said. A lot of whisky benefits from water one way or an other, but this is definitely not one of those. Cheers ;)
You guys should do videos where you compare 2 whiskies that are very different from eachother to see how flavor and aroma are affected. For example, compare a super smoky scotch to a bourbon, a rye to an Irish, Japanese to Canadian, whatever. I have done this with Bruichladdich classic laddie, and Jack Daniels single barrel and noticed things about each that I have never experienced before. For example I noticed a slight blackberry in the Jack Daniels, and toasted marshmallow in the nose of the Bruichladdich. Bonus points for the mooch if he can get Daniel to try this.
Hey! Love the channel. You guys have charmed the pants off my bank account and sent me down a dark brown whiskey hole from which I may never again see the light of day. It’s a good thing! Anyway, something I’ve wanted to see for a while is reviews of regular ol’ bottom shelf familiar stuff like classic Jack Dan’s, Jim Beam, Evan Williams, etc, but punched up by blending. Keep the original backbone, but see what flavors you can really bring out to take them to be next level. Put those almighty Somm blending powers to the test! It could be a Well Whiskey Wednesday or whatever. Keep rocking!
I'm a relatively new Sub. But you guys always talk about biscuit notes in what you're drinking. This may be more of a Whiskey Biscuits idea, but what about actually baking biscuits with whiskey? Maybe a nice sugar cookie with an islay glaze? Or perhaps a macaroon with bourbon cream filling? Mayhaps a Rye and rosmary shortbread? That last one actually sounds like it might be good...
I don't know how else to reply to this other than TEAM COOKIE!!!!!!! Biscuit: www.cookingmaniac.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/buttermilk-biscuit-1.jpg Cookie:i.ytimg.com/vi/tfMfkRLPXHA/maxresdefault.jpg
Was just at Total Wine and was torn between Michters American Whiskey and Angel's Envy. Ended up with Michters, but was wondering which one you guys liked more. Both got high marks from y'all, but you don't compare the two. Let me know!
The reason Rex week had better metrics isn't because viewers like Rex. It's because we don't like him, and enjoyed watching Daniel wipe the floor with his "match this $$$ bottle" challenge. Although Daniel's proximity to the ground helps him wipe any floor. Anyways...Rex, nice shirt. Do you know what an iron is?
I had an idea for a video: creating several blends of laphroaig + another whisky (only one) and seeing which combo is best and then pour them all together at the end
Just liking it is a great place to start :-) Taking the time to really sit with a whisk(e)y helps. Using the Whisk(e)y Smiths' Deductive Tasting Chart is great. Use the nosing techniques that Daniel demos in the show and then follow along down the chart. It helps by grouping aromas into different categories. You might not recognize a specific smell at first, but you might pickup something more general...like it smells like fruit or it smells more like fresh baking or perhaps some sort of smoke. Identifying the general scent can help you start to focus. If it's sort of fruity, start to see if you can pinpoint something more specific. Start by taking small sips. Then do another nosing. We actually taste with our noses :-) Using your mouth and nose together helps to amplify scents and tastes. It takes some practice, but you know...science ;-) Watching a review of the whisk(e)y while doing your own tasting is also a good way to see if any of the nosing and tasting notes resonate with you. It can help provide the "light bulb" moment. Good luck!
I really like the idea of separating "the vault" from "biscuits". I follow both. I like a more structured approach from The Vault and I like behind the scenes ridiculousness from Biscuits. To put it in terms we'll all understand...The Vault is Talisker 21...Biscuits is diet pepsi. Both are great on their own, but you gotta keep 'em separated.
Hey guys, I have a story and a dilemma. When I was 15 years old, my dad and I took a trip touring England. It was my first time traveling out of the country and really seeing another country. We saw many historic sights and it was an amazing trip I’ll never forget. Right before the trip home, my dad bought me a bottle of 15 year old scotch, because I was 15, with the plan of opening it when I turned 21. (When my brother took his trip when he was 15, four years prior, Mom did the same for him.) Trouble is, no one in my family really drinks whiskey (until recently, when I found your channel, that is 😉) so my 21st birthday came and went, and the bottle is still sitting on my dad’s fridge unopened (my brother’s bottle is unopened too). I recently realized that the bottle we bought is the discontinued Laphroaig 15, so part of me doesn’t ever want to open it. On the other hand, I couldn’t really see myself getting rid of it, even if it were to become valuable, because this particular bottle has sentimental value for me on top of any monetary value it might have. But keeping it on the shelf unopened is a waste if there’a no way I’d get rid of it. But then if I open it, it will eventually be gone and that thought makes me sad as well. But at the same time, it would only become valuable from rarity, mot quality or prestige, because Laphroaig in general is widely available for a pretty ok price. I don’t know. Whisk(e)y is meant for drinking, but I’m still really hesitant to open the bottle. I guess I don’t really have a question, but I just wanted to share that story and say I love this channel and you guys have given me an appreciation for whisk(e)y that I’ve never had before.
Definitely keep that bottle unopened. Laphroig tastes like very unpleasant medicine. It's nasty. That's not just whisky, that's pain in a bottle. You have to be a sado-masochist to enjoy Laphroig (if you haven't been drinking a lot of peated scotch). I think to get around your dilemma buy a bottle of Dalwhinnie 15 year old Single Malt Scotch (really great taste), and open it and start enjoying it. After opening, if you keep it out of sunlight it will last for maybe 2 years. No hurry. Pull out the 15 yo Laphroig unopened, look at it, think nostalgic, and then pour 35 ml of the Dalwhinnie in a wine glass, add a teaspoon of water, and sip it very slowly, and enjoy. All Laphroigs taste like a camp fire, tastes like ash from a fire, burnt wood, and smoke from the fire (that's the taste of a highly peated whisky). Other tastes in a Laphroig include iodine, and that band-aid smell/taste. It's an acquired taste, like black coffee, or espresso. Salancha!
I'm drinking Glenmorangie Nectar D'or as we speak and I was reading the tasting description in the box. Do you think is pretty accurate description of tasting notes in the boxes for the most part?
Is this the ultimate mooch move? 52 days of Rex broken down to once a week? I called it! PS you magnificent bastards have taken me from dam fine bourbon to buying Arbelour 12. Then I studied your videos and I have grown my tastes to Bunnahabhain, Ardbeg, Bruichladdich, Kilchoman, Tamdu, Old Pultaney... I now understand why so many people don’t just like Scotch, they love it! Thank you for keeping the channel light and fun with the occasional eye roll when Rex has heard too much of Daniels glorious times while living in a hut in Bora Bora. However, I do like the history behind the distilleries and knowing more about sister distilleries is very helpful. ie Springbank, Longrow and Hazelburn.
During some random amazon shopping I came across of some rocks called "whiskey rocks" . which are basically stones that you can put in the freezer and in your whiskey without adding any water but dropping the temperature. I don't really think that they are a great idea because colder stuff loses in taste but i'd like to hear your opinion about that.
I have a question for both Rex and Daniel. Rex I need a mooch level determination. Im 23, feels like it adds some mooch points. My grandpa is to the age where he can't make the trek from Michigan to Florida. So I offer to drive him down. Now I need to fly up there to do so. Well I'm a bigger guy and I need the wide seats. So my parents buy normal coach tickets for me but I've learned from the best. So by just saying who can put a price on family my coach seats are now a first class ride. In first class you get the 9 yards, dinner, desert, and not to mention free booze. How could I pass up. So I spent a 3 hour flight and a 2 hour flight trying as many whiskey they had available. Plus on this trip there will be a tour of the Angles Envy distillery I feel like this is at least mooch level 53. Daniel on the show or on a whiskey biscuits episode can you guys do a biscuit (team cookie) whiskey pairing. The Woodford Reserve at altitude with the bisqoff seemed to make a damn fine pair. They accented each other extremely well. And with a pairing that well done I don't see how it can even be biscuits, the southern biscuits. The cookie biscuit just paired perfectly. #teamcookie #RRRREEEEEXXXXXXMMMMMOOOOUUUUUNNNNTTTTTHHHHH P.S. I really enjoyed the poor man's blends. Those were really facinsting.
I hit my whisky capacity at a dinner party the other night and opted for a Smokey coke over my usual vodka and orange .. (technical definition... the alcohol intake has hit my Adams Apple and any more neat booze and I'm on the great white phone to God all night).... I must confess... Smokey Coke is my new "over-capacity" drink
I do love the ever changing formats and inovation this channel undergoes...bit if you guys think you can keep a rigid format for even a month y'all are kidding yourselves 😂😂😂 .this also made me realize I've never tried unaged whisky since Ive gotten accustomed to alcohol, how much flavor/complexity does it actually have? How much of it comes from the barrel, and is it even similar in taste?
How about Monday- Single Malt, Tuesday- American Whiskey or Bourbon or Rye, Wednesday- Irish or Canadian or other World whiskey, Thursday- Blended Malt or Blended Scotch, and Friday- Blend-a-geddon and other unorthodox things.
Love the videos. I am a young guy and going to most party’s and or clubs is not the nicest of experiences regarding the actual alcohol consumption as most people my age tend to sweetened and over sweetened vodka or tequila in cocktails or shots, this has lead me to normally bring my own bottle as is common, now I have taken as a cheap variant tullamore D.E.W or a johnie walker red label and would love to hear your opinion on the best reasonably priced whiskey from which I can get a decent taste.
thx, i have seen that one yet i was looking for a single go to whisky that is apropraite to drink with a liitle excess ;D meaning something flavourfull but not to expensive as to take more than one glass of without feeling like an idiot for throwing away perfetly good and amazing whisky :D
The best inexpensive Bourbon is probably Jim Beam Black. (Another alternative...) The folks in the UK went absolutely bonkers over Four Roses Yellow Label starting back in the 60's. It wasn't available in the US until recently. Long story but Four Roses was sending the good stuff to the UK and Europe in those days and they had been convinced to only sell 'rot gut' in the US back then. Now they sell their always great stuff in the US, and the Yellow Label is inexpensive and good. I myself would probably just stick with Elijah Craig, Buffalo Trace, or Eagle Rare. Wild Turkey 81: $16.99, Four Roses Yellow Label: $17.99, Jim Beam Black: $21.99, Wild Turkey 101: $23.99, Buffalo Trace: $25.99, Eagle Rare 10 year old: $28.99, Elijah Craig Small Batch $29.99. For Scotch I highly recommend Old Pulteney 12 year old... amazing taste, and it's very inexpensive: $37.99 (These are the prices in my area: either Vermont State Liquor stores, or New Hampshire State Liquor stores.) [Oh my God! Johnie Walker Red is horrible. It tastes like gasoline. That's the worst scotch blend I've ever tasted... horrible!. Buy Grants Family Reserve instead: $14.99, (great non-peated, Speyside taste), or buy Dewars White Label: $19.99 (taste contribution from Aberfeldy which is slightly peated). These two actually taste excellent.]
Thank you very much. I myself am german and live in germany so prices do vary but your selection has definetly helped alot as a good guideline. thanks again enjoy your evening (atleast here in germany :P)
It's nice chatting with you... when you find out the prices there I would love to hear back. The prices for good value whisky in Germany, I find interesting. Horst Leuning is a fantastic resource. I wonder if you've discovered this amazing local (German) resource yet. In case you haven't discovered this yet, here is a link to the German language version of his channel: "th-cam.com/users/TheWhiskyStore" Horst and his son Ben create tremendously great whisky review videos, and they do all the reviews in a German channel and they do them again in English on a different channel. The names are "Whisky.de" (German) and "Whisky.com" (English). I watch all of Horst and Ben's video reviews on their English language channel. Keep in mind, Horst is the owner/creator of a fascinating whisky business in Germany. He has a store in an extra beautiful location in Germany, and I understand his main business is mail order, online sales in Germany. He may ship to all of Europe. Keep in mind his videos are not about his business, he simply reviews whisky for the benefit of the viewers. Horst and Ben answer questions on their Whisky blog site which they mention in their TH-cam videos. My English phrase for what is available to you in German, there, is what i would call a "treasure trove of information." For fun, I listen to some of their whisky reviews in German. Even though I have not learned the language, I still enjoy hearing the language spoken by these two great guys. Cheers!
Mulled Apple Cider :-) Great for a Christmas Party (like a hot party punch). I did try a couple of Spirit of Hven a couple of weeks ago and they were probably the most interesting offerings that I tried at the whisky fest that night. They age their whisky in used Vodka barrels, because so much corn is GMO, using vodka barrels allows them to keep it organic. They make the vodka themselves, then, when it has permeated the barrel, they re-distill the vodka and use it to make gin (if I'm remembering things correctly). Their Master Distiller, Henric Molin is a chemist and they have a facility for testing spirits, including a gas chromatography-mass spectometry machine. As for the "Winter Spirit"...JD put one last year and I found it to be a disappointment. I'd expected it to be more whiskey and it came out as some sort of holiday apple juice :-/ If you can get some of the Spirit of Hven single malts, I think you might have a better impression.
wow i was just sampling the nectar last night while watching your 4 pack of glenmorangie episode. do you guys have glencoe? i've never tasted this whiskey after the time i had it in a bangkok bar once. never seen it anywhere since.
I’ve been getting into whisk(e)y over the past year or so, starting with bourbons like Knob Creek. When i first tried scotch (Highland Park 12) i was unsure about the peaty flavor. By the time i finished the bottle i was hooked. Through trying a handful of other scotches my favorite has been Lagavulin 16. The problem is the cost in my state tends to be more than you are saying in Texas. To help me not go broke, I’ve been wanting to try blends. I tried Monkey Shoulder knowing you guys like it but i prefer the taste of Islays rather than speysides. Can you recommend a peaty blend that is easier on my bank account than these wonderful single malts? Thanks! - Matt
Daniel, just over your shoulder is a green labelled bottle, inbetween the strathisla and the glen livet. Is that another glen livet or is it Glenalba, which was a whisky sold by Lidl that won whisky of the year in 2013. If so could you review that PLEEEEASE???
I've been trying to get into whiskey but I don't like the nectar d'or taste profile. What kind of other whiskey should I try that would better fit my taste. I think I prefer some deeper fruits profile
I really like the idea of a better format for the tastings you are doing. Some ideas for the "Rex" days besides blending : blind tastings, top 5 (specific catigory ie Single Malt American Whiskey like you said you'd do 4 or 5 months ago while tasting the Stanahans)
Appreciate the more structured tasting notes. Keeps it kind of condensed and makes sure you don't get lost in some story. Then allows ample time for shenanigans.
Hey Daniel, have you hear of "bagaço"? It's like a Portuguese spirit made from the fermentation of grapes and other fruits. The alcohol is very strong. And it's usually drank neat or with an expresso. Got my hands in some, and I was thinking in aging it. Any tips?
Daniel, can you give me your top three whisky's like Longmorn 16? You mentioned Glencadam 15 and Fettercairn Fior as being nuanced and subtle in the Longmorn style. Is there another two or three I can try like them? Thank you Somm. Thanks Mooch. I've learned a lot from the show and look forward to it each day.
You just named my top three in my "subtle" category. I also have top 3's in multple other categories. Like aggressive would be "laphroaig Lore, Ardbeg Dark Cove, and Heavily Peated Port Charlotte". Another subtle is bunnahabhain 12
I get chocolate on quite a few Glenmorangie whiskies. The Quinta Ruban, probably my favourite Glenmo, tastes like chocolate covered cherries. I like Glenmorangie a lot, but a bottle lasts a long time, because I don't often want sweet whisky. Give me PEAT !!
I like the thing where you try to mix whiskeys to make a different one but plot twist I wanna see rex try to do it Also Rex, Daniels mentioned the technically bourbon idea before you goof where he said you could just pour it across a new oak plank(or maybe he said bucket).
You should review Cleveland Whisky bourbon. It's honestly kinda "meh" but its a very interesting idea and worth checking out. Its aged for a short amount of time to reach the legal requirement for bourbon, and then pressurized with barrel chips to finish it off.
I seem to have the same problem with Monkey Shoulder as you guys do. Mine seems to be disappearing very quickly, quite possibly evaporating. I also have this problem with Suntory Toki. Is this because of poor bottle design? Or am I not storing it properly?
So i heard about Ardbeg Dark Cove from you guys in the last video and after looking it up, thought i'd never find a bottle. Sure enough while im at my local liquor store, im walking around and i see a box of it... look at the price tag and at 120 a bottle would of been out of my price range. But then i saw the sale sign of 69.99. I couldn't believe my eyes... grabbed the bottle and promptly enjoyed a pour at home. Can't help but feel like the mooch gods were watching over me.
Met up with a few friends and found this cool speakeasy style bar in Soho, London. Great whiskey selection so I treated myself to a Springbank, Glenfarclas then finished off with Lagavulin. I found the Lagavulin to be completely different to what I expected, really low on the smoke and peat, citrussy and sweet. It was the 16yr. Are there more complex & smokey versions out there?
Kjell is pronounces as shell. The rest you got. I've actually been thinking that if were to send you a whiskey it would be the Vhen single malt. I haven't tried the one you were exposed to and I hopefully never will. But I live about a 20 min train ride and a 30 in boat ride from the island so you never know. Interesting about the nose: as a tradition in sweden we stick clove into oranges and hang them in our houses. Or at least I do...
I'm heading to India on a two week business trip in December, and I'm wondering if I'll be able to find good whiskies. I've heard that it's hard to find Scotch there and that "whisky" made in India is not actually whisky because of what is typically used in mash builds. Is there anything that I should keep an eye of out for while travelling if I'm looking for a nice drink? P.S. Are you doing the Master of Malt Advent Calendar again? There hasn't been much talk about it recently, and December is quickly approaching!
Amrut makes Scotch-style whisky, and they have quite the variety available. I personally like their Classic Single Malt and I loved a special edition portpipe finish they released in Western Canada. If you like milder peat, their Fusion is fantastic. And if you like it strong, go for the fully peated (that one just about laid me out!).
Amrut really is fantastic. And Canadian Whisky Smith is right, the Fusion is wonderful. There are a lot of whisky drinkers in India. If I'm not mistaken, they drink more whisky than the rest of the world just because of the size of the population.
Does the beard (especially the thick upper lip hair) help with smell or taste or both? P.s. Rex day! To give the bald guy some credit (what's his name?) He seems pretty cool too.
Brilliant! Can’t wait to try the Technically 15! You should have a whole line of them. Technically 10 minutes, Technically 12 minutes, Technically 15 minutes, Technically 18 minutes, and so on.
Hey guys, I've been going through your videos in no particular order since I found the channel and now realize there is so much more out there than just woodford or buffalo trace whiskeys! What happened to the "new channel" Rex was talking about in episode 106? Did that happen?
I took the idea from your White Owl review and made a martini with White Owl, it was damn delicious but unfortunately it was at my friends house for a Halloween party and he only owned one martini glass for his Halloween costume so I ended up sipping martinis out of a red solo cup the whole night. I did manage to mooch some Wayne Gretzky No.99 Red Cask Canadian Whisky off a friend, it was surprisingly refreshing, not my personal taste but overall good job Wayne Gretzky.
I looked up the page for that Hven stuff at Master of Malt. Either those guys actually liked it, or they're REALLY good at faking it for the sake of making a sale. I think everyone is misunderstanding their comments on the shape of the bottle. Yes, it's an Erlenmeyer flask. Obviously. They're not saying it looks like *a* beaker, they're saying it looks like Beaker, the lab assistant from the Muppets. The resemblance is uncanny.
I want you to know I simultaneously love and hate you both, I have been watching for a little over a month (Rex Week was amazing) and am slowly catching up on all of your older episodes while religiously watching your daily releases to get me through my thesis. You inspired me to go out and buy a bottle each of Monkey Shoulder and Jameson to ease my way into whiskey/scotch/bourbon without coke/ginger ale/ etc. I picked it up and smelled it and on the nose I get everything you say, the butterscotch, the biscuits, the sweetness, I can smell it all day and be happy, but the second I put it in my mouth all I taste is fingernail polish remover. I don't know if its a sensitivity to the alcohol, or lack of experience but I am slowly coming to terms that I just can't drink liquors straight, nevertheless every time I am in a liquor store I find myself in the Whiskey section eyeballing bottles of Angels Envy, Glennfiddich, and Laphroaig with an itch to buy them just to see what its like. Despite this torture to my wallet and taste buds, I find myself sitting with a glass of monkey shoulder once a week or so sniffing it and sipping it trying to weed my way through the flavors to find everything you two have talked about. Keep doing what you do, this channel is by far my favorite and I show it to everyone who will listen, you're the best.
It's really a matter of just drinking it a whole bunch of times. You can try holding it on your tongue for like 10 seconds, which is supposed to help you taste the whiskey better after the burning stops (if you haven't done this, be aware that it really will be a bit uncomfortable). It's also been mentioned at various points in the videos, but feel free to add ice or water to it. Even a single piece of ice will make an enormous difference - both watering it down and slightly deadening the taste so it isn't as strong. That makes it much easier to drink without adding a lot of sweetener.
It's not something you can switch off, it just takes time for you brain to quit recognizing the dominate alcohol burn. At some point, it will switch off, and you'll start finding things behind it. Glad you're here. Welcome to the journey
To help this process, try bottles like this Glenmorangie Nectar d'Or. Also, always add at least a teaspoon of water to every (approximately 35 milliliter) pour. My very first scotch, prepared by an old-time Englishman (actually really old, went through WW II during the Blitz) and here's what he mixed for my introduction... One normal (small) pour of Dewar's White Label (a Scotch blend) in a tumbler glass, then he added an equal amount of water, and then he added plenty of ice. This is what he was drinking with his old time buddy, so these long-time Scotch drinkers were actually doing the 'with equal amounts water' and with a whole lot of ice, and they were truly experienced drinkers. This drink with the Scotch blend and the water and the ice... It's very pleasant. It goes down fast. I almost gulped mine. Lots of water, so it keeps you hydrated. Within a few minutes my glass was empty (except for all the ice I had left) and when asked if I wanted another... yes please! I sometimes switch between sampling a Scotch with the customary teaspoon of water, and I switch to that "English Scotch" drink that I described whenever I feel like it. One trick is... use Dewar's White Label for that drink with the water and ice. Or use some other Scotch blend, but I tried a lot of blends, and I still prefer the Dewars inexpensive blend due to the taste of the Aberfeldy Single Malt that is used to make this blend. Salancha!
There's no actual time stamp on the bourbon aging. Just requirements for what you have to put on the label if it's under a certain age. 2 yrs makes it straight bourbon. 4 years, means you don't have to put an age statement. 4 yrs with a shit ton of other requirements can make it Bottled in Bond. But you can age one for a month and release it as bourbon as long as it says "aged 1 month". In Scotland and Ireland, the minimum requirement is 3 yrs.
Whiskey Vault seems like the regulation I was reading was for straight whisky... It does not help that most bourbon I have seen is NAS or with a higher age statement than required by law
The Nectar D’Or was the first whisk(e)y I fell in love with. I’m so glad you went back to it and gave it a full review (it was part of your Glenmorangie 10 review a while back). It remains my favorite of the core expressions (that was for Rex). I know you two prefer the peat, and I enjoy that as well, but this is my sweet spot. At the moment my favs are the Glenmorangie 18, the Nectar D’Or and the Lagavulin 16. Two extremes, right? Oh and I like this sometimes structured, sometimes hilarity plan.
Hi guys. Rex, you were sorta close with the pronouncing, at least closer than *cough* Daniel *cough*. Basically the "kj" is pronounced as a "sh" (shell etc) and the rest was more or less spot on. Daniel was correct in assuming the swedishness of the origin. I had originally planned to send the tycho's star, but that would have cost about $150-200 just in shipping and customs and shit. I'll bring something nicer when I visit some time in the future. I might be a bit... Thirsty when arriving though. Rex will understand *hint hint*.
How is the Tycho's Star? Almost picked it up at systemet, but went with the Seven Stars expression instead. Not too impressed with the Seven Stars, wondering if the other Hven are vastly different.
I didn't see the single malt on the your website, but never mind the whisky I want to send has nothing to do with Cedar Ridge and I have no idea if it's good or not but the name is too much of a dad joke not to.
Great idea, guys! Bottom Shelf/Rex Day weekly. Once a week Rex drinks whisky out of a plastic bottle and gives us his opinion. It should be the last episode of the week so that Rex has that li'l buzz on! And, get a haircut, hippy! And, never forget - Ancient Ancient Age! Peace Out!
when is the last time y'all bought a bottle? I think this entire channel is the master level mooch
Loooooool
My wife believes that your commentary on my personality is hilarious and exceptionally accurate.
I'm compelled to agree with her.
Good day to you sirs.
Glad you're here, friend.
Shhhhhhhhhhhh! :-)
Daniel i am almost always on your side but Rex really is a man of the people
Love his suggestion for once a week fun
People may wonder why this one is the most expensive of the three extra matured - the Sauternes barriques used are Château d'Yquem which LVMH owns - the pinnacle of the category, apparently. It'd be fun to compare nectar dor with kavalan fino and glen moray Chardonnay. Hmm..
Cheers fellas
Mark
I hate drinking pretty much any alcohol but I find your channels to be utter gold 🎉
Daniel, I will stand up for you mate! I think the structure is cool man. Bravo. But yes rex you should get one day. Look at you too negotiating and compromising like adults 😊
Blind tasting challenge. See if one can identify what they're tasting.
Long live the brain!
how about adding water as part of the review portion to give us an idea of how it changes?
If you add water to nectar it becomes water basically. Its way too smooth/mild.
A few drops can totally change a whiskey.. it's a 50 / 50 loot box.... sometimes it really opens it up and sometimes it dulls the whiskey.
Cheers ;)
Your opinion indeed, i think the Nectar benefits water greatly. Cheers
not at 92 proof.. or 46% alcohol (which this is). It's Whisky not Nectar -1 Teaspoon water is perfect
Why would you make your biscuits out of sugar cookie dough? That doesn't sound like it would be good to put gravy on at all.
You don’t know what you have done....
I don't know how else to reply to this other than TEAM COOKIE!!!!!!!
Biscuit: www.cookingmaniac.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/buttermilk-biscuit-1.jpg
Cookie:i.ytimg.com/vi/tfMfkRLPXHA/maxresdefault.jpg
You need to go back to older videos and review the long-fought Biscuit Controversy that rocked the channel to its very foundations.
Daniel and Rex week made me realize that you guys cater to my 9 year old attention deficit kid and geek in me. Good job guys.
Was just at Total Wine and was torn between Michters American Whiskey and Angel's Envy. Ended up with Michters, but was wondering which one you guys liked more. Both got high marks from y'all, but you don't compare the two. Let me know!
Just got Angel's Envy...looks like I'll make my own comparison tonight!
I had an idea for a video: creating several blends of laphroaig + another whisky (only one) and seeing which combo is best
and then pour them all together at the end
Hven actually does some good peated whisky, But if you are going for the best of Sweden I would advice you to try Box whisky.
Just getting into whiskey how do I train my palate to pick out all the notes in a whiskey right now I either just like it or I don't
Just liking it is a great place to start :-)
Taking the time to really sit with a whisk(e)y helps.
It takes some practice, but you know...science ;-)
Watching a review of the whisk(e)y while doing your own tasting is also a good way to see if any of the nosing and tasting notes resonate with you.
Man, that's a dilemma. That's a bottle I would open, but maybe on the next major life event.
Whiskey Vault yeah that makes sense. Don’t wanna just never open it, but don’t want to just randomly open it.
Sorry Gentlemen, “Technically Bourbon” is already taken. It’s called Jack Daniel’s.
I like them when I'm wanting cooler whiskey without watering it down with ice.
P.S.S. Sometimes I drink my whiskey neat. Other times I take off my tie and untuck my shirt.
My next whisky purchase is gonna be laproiagh 10 or ardbeg 10, whould be cool to see a comparison and get a recommandation :) love the show
I hit my whisky capacity at a dinner party the other night and opted for a Smokey coke over my usual vodka and orange .. (technical definition... the alcohol intake has hit my Adams Apple and any more neat booze and I'm on the great white phone to God all night).... I must confess... Smokey Coke is my new "over-capacity" drink
Ps.sunday hangover was horrendous...
The sugar makes everything worse.
Would love to see you two review the classic Vat 69! I know it's considered a cheap blend but it's got a lot of interesting history!
I do love the ever changing formats and inovation this channel undergoes...bit if you guys think you can keep a rigid format for even a month y'all are kidding yourselves 😂😂😂
.this also made me realize I've never tried unaged whisky since Ive gotten accustomed to alcohol, how much flavor/complexity does it actually have? How much of it comes from the barrel, and is it even similar in taste?
How about Monday- Single Malt, Tuesday- American Whiskey or Bourbon or Rye, Wednesday- Irish or Canadian or other World whiskey, Thursday- Blended Malt or Blended Scotch, and Friday- Blend-a-geddon and other unorthodox things.
Very possible!
Love the videos. I am a young guy and going to most party’s and or clubs is not the nicest of experiences regarding the actual alcohol consumption as most people my age tend to sweetened and over sweetened vodka or tequila in cocktails or shots, this has lead me to normally bring my own bottle as is common, now I have taken as a cheap variant tullamore D.E.W or a johnie walker red label and would love to hear your opinion on the best reasonably priced whiskey from which I can get a decent taste.
xshotnoob they have a video on that i think it's called "best whiskey for the money" or something like that
thx, i have seen that one yet i was looking for a single go to whisky that is apropraite to drink with a liitle excess ;D meaning something flavourfull but not to expensive as to take more than one glass of without feeling like an idiot for throwing away perfetly good and amazing whisky :D
For Scotch I highly recommend Old Pulteney 12 year old... amazing taste, and it's very inexpensive: $37.99
(These are the prices in my area: either Vermont State Liquor stores, or New Hampshire State Liquor stores.)
[Oh my God!
In case you haven't discovered this yet, here is a link to the German language version of his channel: "th-cam.com/users/TheWhiskyStore"
Horst and his son Ben create tremendously great whisky review videos, and they do all the reviews in a German channel and they do them again in English on a different channel.
My English phrase for what is available to you in German, there, is what i would call a "treasure trove of information."
For fun, I listen to some of their whisky reviews in German.
That's what I'm drinking. Glenmorangie is a master at making whiskey. The glenmorangie sherry cask is my favorite.
Can you guys review Signet? Id love to know what your opinion is on a NAS thats so highly touted.
wow i was just sampling the nectar last night while watching your 4 pack of glenmorangie episode. do you guys have glencoe? i've never tasted this whiskey after the time i had it in a bangkok bar once. never seen it anywhere since.
I do enjoy a glass of Glenmorangie...any one of 'em. Great episode with Rex showing off another trick of the Mooch.
Thanks! - Matt
Johnnie Walker Black and Double Black. Black Bottle.
Whiskey Vault thanks fellas keep up the good work!
Daniel, just over your shoulder is a green labelled bottle, inbetween the strathisla and the glen livet. Is that another glen livet or is it Glenalba, which was a whisky sold by Lidl that won whisky of the year in 2013. If so could you review that PLEEEEASE???
You two numbnuts make my day. Ya also got me drinking more types of whiskey and enjoying the taste over just the effects!
But I love getting lost in some story....... *sigh*
I love your stories, too. But it's hard when, you adorable whisky puppy, an idea squirrel pops in your head mid tasting notes.
Bought this one before I knew what I was buying, Wow just wow... now that its been open since April or so, oh man.... just good.
Hey Daniel, have you hear of "bagaço"? It's like a Portuguese spirit made from the fermentation of grapes and other fruits. The alcohol is very strong. And it's usually drank neat or with an expresso. Got my hands in some, and I was thinking in aging it. Any tips?
I haven't, but it sounds interesting!
Excellent! Thanks again.
I get chocolate on quite a few Glenmorangie whiskies. The Quinta Ruban, probably my favourite Glenmo, tastes like chocolate covered cherries. I like Glenmorangie a lot, but a bottle lasts a long time, because I don't often want sweet whisky. Give me PEAT !!
so when are you guys going to do a video on the glenfiddich project xx?
Since Elija Craig barrel strength is "whiskey of the year" I believe a review is in order.
I like the thing where you try to mix whiskeys to make a different one but plot twist I wanna see rex try to do it
Also Rex, Daniels mentioned the technically bourbon idea before you goof where he said you could just pour it across a new oak plank(or maybe he said bucket).
You should review Cleveland Whisky bourbon. It's honestly kinda "meh" but its a very interesting idea and worth checking out. Its aged for a short amount of time to reach the legal requirement for bourbon, and then pressurized with barrel chips to finish it off.
I looked through the vault and I see that you have the cleveland underground bourbon. How does that compare to the un-barrel-finished bourbon.
Yeah, I gave up after that one, but I'll give it another shot sometime.
I seem to have the same problem with Monkey Shoulder as you guys do. Mine seems to be disappearing very quickly, quite possibly evaporating. I also have this problem with Suntory Toki. Is this because of poor bottle design? Or am I not storing it properly?
I think you may be storying it to close to your glass and accidentally tipping it over too often.
Whiskey Vault must be the case. Thanks for the help! 😂
We had sensed your need and made a few calls. You're welcome. :-)
It's going to be really mellow compared to Springbank. Anything after Springbank will be even more mellow.
Seems I went in the wrong direction!
Oh God you have to make Technically Bourbon!!!
Big fan of the blending concept. More of those with some level of regularity might have some broad appeal.
Can you do the Glenmorangie Signet please?
wanderingstep yes!
Hey Jimmy, which Dalmore would you recommend? I love natural whiskys. #JudgeJimmy
hahahahahaha
At least buy the cheapest one. You waste less money that way. (Please don't buy any.)
Jimmy Leg im getting mixed feeling about your response.
I'm giving you a mixed response about your feelings.
Jimmy Leg I don't know how I feel about that.
Love the channel, but gotta wonder, why no glenlivet 18 review yet!?
Is Dalmore better with fanta or coke?
Does the beard (especially the thick upper lip hair) help with smell or taste or both? P.s. Rex day! To give the bald guy some credit (what's his name?) He seems pretty cool too.
Hey Daniel, when are you going to do a review of your favorite North American Whiskeys?
Can you please please review Glenmorangie Signet?
Smokey coke huh? That sounds so wrong. But so right!
I love ardbeg 10 what other similar whiskeys do you recomend?
Anything from Islay. You're right in the middle of that flavor with Ardbeg
Whiskey Vault thank you
I love Rex's Mooch-itude!!! I hope to send you guys a New England Whiskey here soon. keep up the great work!
Can you guys review, “Pogues” Irish Whiskey?
Your norm stuff is awesome, but it is nice to blend or multiple reviews/samplings is good stuff to.
Brilliant! Can’t wait to try the Technically 15!
You should have a whole line of them. Technically 10 minutes, Technically 12 minutes, Technically 15 minutes, Technically 18 minutes, and so on.
Reminds me of Dogfish Head beer
Budweiser. Ah October was a fine month!
Hey guys, I've been going through your videos in no particular order since I found the channel and now realize there is so much more out there than just woodford or buffalo trace whiskeys!
What happened to the "new channel" Rex was talking about in episode 106? Did that happen?
Yes! It's called Whiskey Biscuits: th-cam.com/channels/phIm9gI_JbeI0ByZSRt5Mg.html
The resemblance is uncanny.
hahahahahaha. Beaker.. awesome.
Me: that bottle looks like an Erlenmeyer flask!
Rex: this bottle looks like a beaker.
Me: no, it looks like an Erlenmeyer flask...
Do you guys have any recommendations on a mash build for me to make at home. Not like I plan on making shine for myself at home;)
Seriously, you guys are amazing. So much fun, most entertaining whisk(e)y reviews on youtube
Salancha!
A little help to Martins last name. Kjellvander will sound like -> Shell-vander . 😊
Do a personal top ten. Please. Both Daniel and Rex try all ten of each others.
As far as I remember while reading the federal regulation bourbon has to be aged for at least 3 years in new oak barrels
I hope to see a collaboration with Famous-smoke, cigar federation, cigar dojo or Small batch cigars. I wanna see a pairing review from you guys.
A question lingering in many whisky drinkers minds... when do you think you'll attempt another live stream? o_O
Considering 50K
Not too impressed with the Seven Stars, wondering if the other Hven are vastly different.
tfwall haven't tried any of them. , Hopefully they are awesome:)
have you smelled dalwhinnie 15 next to a freezer burned orange popsicle yet?
When you say sour/bitter do y'all mean it in sour like 'sour cream' or other aged sourness or tart sour.
I mean tart/sour
I need to send you guys some Iowa whisky I've been wondering down the maze that is Cedar Ridge Distillery's Single Malt line
WE have a few from Cedar Ridge. I haven't fallen in love yet, but I'll keep trying
I didn't see the single malt on the your website, but never mind the whisky I want to send has nothing to do with Cedar Ridge and I have no idea if it's good or not but the name is too much of a dad joke not to.
so what's the difference between white whiskey and vodka? Proof?
distillation style, number of distillations, and sometimes grain
If only there were some way to look for that answer on your own.
Jimmy Leg I know where you can shove a broken bottle, sideways
That seems like a drastic response to a reasonable suggestion.
Rex's diabolical plan to mooch more whisky (blending and other stuff). Boo yah!
After rewatching this I want to know your thoughts on PBR aged 5 seconds whiskey lol
Peace Out!
Rex callendar? Let Rex choose 24/25 "good" whiskeys and do one each day of december. Or are you already planning something for that? :o
which one is good for collecting
If you comment on color do you state E150?
No, I just avoid talking about color if I know there's E150 involved
I live in Austin! How does one buy a ticket to visit this fantasy land?
