  • The GMTK Game Jam is an annual game making marathon, where individuals and teams try to make a game that fits a theme, in just 48 hours.
    I am still shocked, honored, bewildered, and just jazzed to have made it into the original video by GMTK. I decided to do a quick overview of my thought process going into it.

    Hey, congrats! #2 is insane! I got #189 overall which is fantastic but it almost feels like getting 4th or 5th place at the Olympics :P. Regardless, I think the important thing is that I'm improving! Maybe one day I'll make it into the Top Marks! How does it feel?

      Grounded? I just went and checked it out. Nice work! At first I had a hard time imagining how you were going to make interesting gameplay with the going underground mechanic, but then with the moving platforms and going up vertical walls to fall from higher positions, it all made sense and was really well thought out. And 189 is still really well ranked, congrats!

    So ???
    When will it release on Steam as a Reverse Zombie Swarm game?
    - protect the Patient Zero
    - military shoots at your swarm
    - you have different zombies for different abilities, switching between them like weapon-swapping (such as choosing your acid-spitting zombies to melt tanks)
    - one of which allows to infect the enemy military for a high-risk, high reward way to refresh your swarm.

    The carrion aspect is the fact that the power comes with a tradeoff. I agree that it's underutilized in games, especially for "RPG mechanics" (including things like your health here).
    Anyways, congrats. Your game fits the theme, but it's main selling point for me is the polish. It actually feels like a releasable game, not as a student project, if you know what I mean.

    Great game, I'm curious how does the 'defensive formation' works under the hood, clearly there is some kind of grid alignment but how do the blocks decide where to go?

    • @arceyominyin
      @arceyominyin  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks! The exact implementation would be kind of long to type out, but to put it as simply as possible: The player is only directly controlling the core brick. Each yellow brick is its own little ai pawn, and its constantly trying to go to a target location. By default the target location is set to an offset from the core (player) brick. This target location gets offset further or pushed around based on the what the player is doing, either moving or pressing the shield button etc.

    its such an awesome idea!
    ive a question, im a starting game dev, i mostly use unity and i was curious how you made the cubes surround you in an organized way? is it like a 2d array that you tell each cube to go to based on an x,y offset?

    • @arceyominyin
      @arceyominyin  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks! I use Unreal, so I'm not sure exactly how well this will translate, but yeah. The exact implementation would be kind of long to type out, but to put it as simply as possible: The player is only directly controlling the core brick. Each yellow brick is its own little ai pawn, and its constantly trying to go to a target location. You nailed the x,y offset, by default the target location is set to an offset from the core (player) brick. This target location gets offset further or pushed around based on what the player is doing, either moving or pressing the shield button etc.
      To get a little more specific, I used a data table to tell each brick which offset to use based on their own index within the array that I was storing their references. I'm sure there is probably some super smart way to assign the correct offset to the correct index using 'math' but I'm not that smart, and a data table was the easiest way for me. It also worked out because I wanted the bricks to fire from the outside in, and that made it really easy to do as well.
      Best of luck to you developing games! Its quite a rabbit hole, but can be really rewarding.
