    I’ve been listening to enough of these calls now that it really seems like people let their ego get the best of them. It’s ego that causes you to spend above what you can afford-you feel like you want to prove something, show off, show that you’ve made it. I’ve been guilty of it too. But if you want to take control of your finances, your ego needs to get left at the door.

      That is spot on. Good work!

      Tanvir Minhas thanks! It was basically personal reflection. When I was younger I always wanted to buy brand names because I didn’t have those things growing up and wanted to show that I “made it”. It was all ego. I feel silly looking back at it now.

    • @Erika2
      @Erika2 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Tanvir Minhas I try to share everything I’ve learned about personal finance on my TH-cam channel so check that out if you have time! My biggest financial regret from my early 20s is not investing sooner. I think I was just intimidated by the whole concept. Now, I wish I would’ve started investing earlier because I’ll never be able to make up for that lost time. Another big one is going to get an expensive degree (I took out $200,000 of student loans to go to law school) without really putting much thought into whether I even wanted to be a lawyer and whether it made sense financially. At the time it just seemed like the right path-something that would make my asian mom proud. Student loans feel like Monopoly money when you’re taking them out; the gravity doesn’t hit you until after graduation. So those are the 2 that come to mind :). You’re young! Take advantage of that! Absorb as much information as you can about your finances early and start applying it to your life! 👊🏼👊🏼

    I laugh every time he says rice and beans because this is a staple in my culture. And trust me, find the closest Haitian restaurant to you, taste their rice and beans, yes the plain one, with no add ons, and you'll never wanna call rice and beans a struggle meal again. It's all in the spices people. Spices can make the most boring ingredients sing.
    This is why I can eat very cheaply and when you look at my plate you'd think it's a grand restaurant.
    It's colorful, flavorful and delicious. There is a staple in Haitian food called diri, sòs pwa, legim.
    It's literally white rice, a bean sauce (boil the beans, blend them with spices to make a hot soup), and mashed eggplants.
    Sounds ridiculous right? It's crazy cheap and crazy delicious.

    I changed my mindset to “my life is better than I deserve”
    I am now six months till I’m debt free, other than a 15 year mortgage which should be paid off in 7 years.

    My husband and I were also FPU drop outs BUT I still had the cds, the books, everything and remembered everything I learned. It took 2 years of growing up before we could actually do the program. Right now we only have a house payment and some medical bills to pay off so we are one year away from being free! Problem is we had to grow up and change our attitudes toward how we lived. The first thing that has to prosper is inside of us because otherwise this will not work because it takes discipline and change for Dave's plan to work! I thank GOD this was waiting for us to come back to and I didn't give it away. But take it from me, If it's challenging you let it! Don't fight it because it's absolutely a waste of time to do so! God bless you.

    3:12 "stop the 401K"
    I disagree there.
    If the company matches your 401K, maintain the 401K up to whatever the company matches. So if your company matches your first 3%, then lower your 401K withholding to 3% and *get the company match.* That's a free 100% return, that's sheltered from tax until you withdraw it.
    Never stop your 401K completely if you have a company match. You're throwing away money if you do.

    • @chrisstaub5880
      @chrisstaub5880 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, a company match is a great return, and it feels terrible to give it up - which is a very good reason to do exactly that. Looking forward to restarting retirement investing and getting that match creates another goal to work towards and additional motivation to get out of debt that much faster.

      I have friends that go on vacation MULTIPLE times a year and have debt up to their eyeballs. When you have a “live for the moment” mentality, you don’t consider eliminating debt as a priority. Now, they’d love to be out of debt, but are not willing to put in the sweat equity it would take to get there. They somehow hope it will happen passively. I HATE debt to a point where I will never consider using a credit card again. I will scrub public restroom floors before having another car payment. These fools will finance anything some idiot will put them on payments for. My wife and I make about the same money as they do. The difference - our net worth is about $450K. Their net worth - minus (fill in the blank and make sure you include several zeros after the number).

    Getting both partners on the same page is huge. My wife and I both got on board with getting out of debt, and we made it! Now, we're planning on how to save for a retirement that will allow us to stop working earlier and still live a great life in the meantime.
    We're also able to plan out investment accounts for our children that we will gift them when they are settled down and looking to buy a house. Being able to to pay it forward is so much better than any fancy house or car, and hopefully it will be enough to significantly impact the lives of our children and grandchildren so that they too can start saving at a much younger age.
    We don't make a whole lot more than this caller at present, and we're able to make all of these plans at our current income level with money to spare. Life is SO much better without money stress.

Guy and his wife still have to pay rent/mortgage somewhere, EAT, pay taxes on that $100k, etc. plus all his other bills. The student loan bill doesn't just stop (let's say it's 4% on $40k - that's probably a 10 year loan @ $400 per month. Plus property taxes, electric, gas, water, etc. God forbid anyone gets sick in that 18 months. 18 months of $100k per year is 150k - Federal/State/Local (at best 100k take home). If this guy lived with his parents and didn't have 40k in student loans nor another 10k in random debt I could see maybe 18 months to knock out 50k in debt. 18 months though as stated is way too optimistic IMO.
