The Law Screamed At Me While Cycling Odessa

  • My wife was sent to Odessa, Texas to do human resource work, and since it was paid for I decided to take the Restomod and check out the town. Wow, I had no idea what kind of area I mapped out on Ride With GPS. The Department Of Public Safety officer (DPS) literally screamed at me to get out of there. In the past few weeks, there had been a few murders and assaults in this particular part of town and I don't know what was going on today but it was a bit intense. That was exciting. LOL
Thanks for watching and all the best, Tony
In 2021 Odessa ranked 23rd in the top 50 most dangerous cities but as of 2022 it has moved to 91 in the top 100. Great job Odessa

I'll be leaving Friday night and headed to northeast Texas for the "Northeast Texas Trail Gran Fondo". It's a ride from Roxton to Clarksville to celebrate another 50 miles of trail that has been completed. Rain and thunderstorms are in the forecast so keep your fingers crossed for the safety of everyone on the ride. I'm going to do it as an overnighter and ride back to Roxton on Sunday. If you saw tonight's video I'll get back to the comments when I return. Thanks and have a great weekend. Atb, Tony

It definitely pays to do a bit of research on the level of crime, safety or lack there of in a new community when you are visiting by bike. Riding a bike past a crime scene can leave a person feeling very vulnerable.
    Thanks for that reminder.

Yes Sir, two of my son live in Odessa and my wife is from there. We moved her Dad here because of how rough it was getting. He had lived in Odessa 60 years, said he moved there when the only side walks in town were around the court house. He passed in January at the age of 97. I took him back once and after driving around for awhile he said "take me back to my small town"!

    • @BluecollarBackcountry

I'm sure the changes were not what he had expected. At least he saw Odessa again. After passing through countless times on the interstate I really had no idea what it was like and I just happened to see the rough parts

I took a bicycle trip up through Yellowstone National Park on my way to Jackson, Wyoming for Summer work and forgot my snow pants. I was in shorts, and it was snowing when I got to Madison Campground. I stayed there an extra night at the hiker/biker camp until the weather cleared. Great weather all the way into Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

Flat cycling sounds good to me and that sounds like a prime excuse to go with your wife for this trip. One thing I would always do if I was in the US and that is whatever an officer tells me, or screams at me, don't have to ask me twice either! I am always forgetting things, we once went to a three day music festival (In Wales) and when I got there I found out I had forgotten the tickets, thankfully I knew the organiser or we would not have gotten in lol! Never went to the wrong hotel mind, especially wheeling a bike! Cheers Alan

    • @BluecollarBackcountry

Oh man, it's a really good thing you knew someone to get you into the festival without your tickets. Hahaha. I had to go back for tickets once when I saw the Rolling Stones in 1974. I was upset that they cost more than other bands. They were $10 USD each. Hahahahaha

Having said that, I’m glad you’re okay dude. I got a shot of adrenaline just hearing the officer shout the warning on TH-cam, I can’t imagine the adrenaline dump in real life haha!

Great video Tony. Bad neighborhoods are scary when on a bicycle. Especially when we don't have the false sense of security being in an automobile for a quick getaway... Ah, the benefits of combining business trips with pleasure can't be beat. I forgot chain lube twice. But you know what they say, the squeaky wheel gets the oil. So I remembered at my destination. Good luck on your upcoming "Gran Fondo". I leave Sunday to ride from Maine back to my home in Connecticut. Take care and stay safe, Steve

Glad you made it out unscathed. Those were not bike friendly streets at all. The lack of shoulders kept me off many local routes before I stopped riding. Maybe I'll pump up the tires on my old Diamondback this weekend and see if my achy body can handle it.
