Unrelated, I realized while working on this that in the last month, I've released two Christmas game videos by pure coincidence - Spider-Man: Miles Morales and this. More related: I think I agree, it's definitely a top Christmas game, easily!

This is nostalgia for me! My sister and I used to play this but never could get past a certain point. You never hear this game mentioned so we always just saw it as “our” mysterious gem of a game. So glad you love it just as much!!
I didn’t know former Capcom employees worked on Parasite Eve 2. That explains why Aya looks like Jill Valentine from Resident Evil 3, as well her bonding with the 2nd Eve which mirrors Claire Redfield and Sherry Birkin. Also Kyle being basically a mix of Chris Redfield and Leon Kennedy. Most people won’t notice but in Resident Evil Dead Aim, Kyle gets somewhat parodied with protagonist Bruce Mcgivern. This is my favorite game due to the combination of its unique premise and gameplay systems, its beautiful presentation, and the extreme nostalgia I have for it. I'm always excited when I see a new video made about this over-looked gem, and this is perhaps the best and most comprehensive look at the game on TH-cam. Great job!
That's very high praise, I know there have been some pretty popular Parasite Eve videos over the years - so thank you so much, that's a huge, humbling compliment!
"The 3rd birthday has very deep and complex characters." That's the funniest thing I've heard since Square sold a bunch of game IP's for stock in NFT's.
Maybe its the Covid related depression, but i really miss the old Squaresoft. During their reign on playstation, if i saw that logo i knew i was going to be getting a top quality RPG. Now, i expect some light rpg, action elements, in an average to good game.
I totally feel that. Still get a warm and fuzzy feeling thinking about these late-90's Square games, with their (usually) distinctive covers and white disc art.
Square-Enix has really been a mixed bag for me. Final Fantasy XV was fun, but not as good as I hoped. I enjoyed the gameplay of Kingdom Hearts 3, but found the story lacking. FFVIIR I didn't care for when I found out it was only a third of the original game and that they basically padded it out to make it run longer. Some of their other recent games like Octopath Traveler and Bravely Default I really like, and I'm looking forward to the Fire Emblem FF Tactics-like game they're making. But Square just doesn't pump out instant classics like they used to. FFVII, VIII, IX, Xenogears, Parasite Eve, Chrono Cross, and so many other more all on the PS1 and they are all just masterpieces in their own right.
i have a lot of great memories with this game. my next door neighbor didn't have that many ps1 games, so we'd just play this over and over again. whenever i think of great, yet short RPGs, parasite eve 1 immediately comes to mind.
It's definitely jumped up on my list too, for shorter RPGs! I can see myself coming back to NG+ every now and then, it's just such a tightly-packed game (and like I said, we can't really get more of it in the sequels!)
Solid video - I remember buying this game new after seeing commercials for it; I was 15 at the time so thankfully they were more lax in regards to selling M rated games to minors.. On the Resident Evil comparison note, a lot of people consider Resident Evil and Silent Hill to be the opposite sides of a coin when it comes to horror-themed games -- personally, I think that it's a triangle (like if a 3-sided coin were possible) with Resident Evil, Silent Hill & Parasite Eve on the three end-points. After all, one is loud, aggressive with its scares and adheres to a believable physical reality (Resident Evil), one is metaphorical, abstract and adheres only to its own nebulous physical reality (Silent Hill), and one is a fusion of serious sci-fi and fantasy, methodical in its storytelling and horror mostly just in terms of its themes and audio-visual design (Parasite Eve).
So I'm sure someone has pointed it out already, but the Megami Tensei series is actually based off a book series, several are even direct sequels to the original novel, and released several years earlier.
I like to see a Koudelka retrospective video. I love legend of dragoon, parasite eve and koudelka, great games overshadow by the more popular mainstream titles
Thank you very much! I have no clue what the physical prices are looking like, but if you're in the U.S. or don't mind making a U.S. PSN account, both PS1 PE games are $6 for PS3/Vita.
Played this game for the first time around a year ago. As someone who’s not a big fan of turn based combat, the hybrid of real-time and turn based was surprisingly really fun. This game is so unique and we’ll probably never get something similar ever again.
I think PE2 holds up quite well, it has so many QOL small things that are surprising for its era. For example the menuing is really streamlined. There's no weird delay, the UI is easily understood, no clutter. The interaction between the powers and gun play is cool, and the music, the settings, the enemy design and their sounds are really good. That said I pretty much grew up with tank controls.
It's interesting looking back, one can't help but feel that it was probably PE1 that showed Square that they can make their traditional battle system into something more action oriented/focused. Now here we are 23 years later and that's basically what the Final Fantasy battle system has evolved into lol. Sadly, the rumor over the years since the end of PE2 is whether Hideaki Sena will allow the usage of the name and original concepts from the novel & first two games to be ever used again by Square. Since the rumor is he disliked how sexualized Aya was, and had become in PE2. Oh, he also co-owns the name so Square has to go through not only him, but the novel's publisher Kadokawa too. To my understanding, Square owns the characters to the video game series and can freely do whatever they want with them as long as it doesn't directly reference any of the ideas from the original novel, and by extension, the first two games. (Mitochondria! /me takes a shot of alcohol) Also two fun facts, author Hideaki Sena is Ph.D. Pharmacology. Dude ended up graduating and does talks on microbiology and genre fiction. The character Kunihiko Maeda bares his likeness but no one knows for sure if it was intentional lol
The first part is something I tried to dance a little bit around when talking about PE as that "cinematic RPG" - its impact on later Square games is crystal clear. That's part of what makes it so fascinating to me, that perhaps one of the studio's most internally influential projects is one they can't exactly talk about (or rather, make) anymore. That's the most "90s game" thing imaginable!
Love it's snow covered Manhattan look, the game has always been dripping with atmosphere. And it's a fairly short playthrough for an RPG if it's vintage which is nice. Always felt like it's missing a little something but it's still great.
Harlan Ellis wrote a short story called “I have no mouth and I must scream” which had an adventure game that was a sequel to it written by Ellis who also voiced the main antagonist/sort of narrator
I'm literally begging for this type of game. A open world PE where after exploring maybe go back to the station and spend your hard earned BP, with tones of weapons and pe to use. Thing that annoys me if they made the game right they would sell millions of copy's.
One of my all time favorites, came out when I was in high school, was immediately drawn to the whole "JRPG in a modern setting" thing First "big" game I ever beat (at all of 24 hours)
I know this is like a year ago but the comment about this game being the first to be a sequel to a novel, I though or at least could have sworen the first game set as a full sequel to a novel was one of the first Megami Tensei games.
First, I think you deserve WAY more subs than you have. Not only this vid, but every one I've watched so far of yours has been top notch. I'm glad you loved PE as much as I did back in the day. Beautiful game with a beautiful soundtrack. I do recommend giving PE2 another shot. The atmosphere is just as isolating, I think it can be downright unsettling at times. I also think it's more replayable than the first (although ng+ was awesome, 2 has a better implementation imo). There are multiple endings based on certain routes and choices you make, and the PE attacks are much more fleshed out. The armor and weapon customization is different, but you can still make yourself really OP by doing the right things. It's really a blast. I promise lol
One thing about New Game + is that you keep the weapons you rename but if you actually don't rename them, they're gone and you're stuck with the weak pistol again and you need to find and customize your guns back. When i first plaed the game i thought the Rename mechanic was just a bonus thing because the game doesn't tell you that, so i didn't rename my guns because i'm bad at names and when i started New Game + i was screwed, though, the game difficulty is so well balanced that you really didn't need your old weapon...unless you wanted to do the new randomized dungeon, i had to recollect 200 scraps just to Get and customize the gun i was using and let me tell you: you really start hating Aya running speed when exploring that dungeoun because everytime you need to go back to restock and modify your weapon, you need to navigate all the dungeon backwards and try to find the stairs and then the elevator that will take you to the exit, all while fighting countless random battles as you get lost because, of course, the floors are randomly generated. It was a nightmare . Overall i really liked the game now, when i was younger i hated it because i was used to PE2 since in Europe the first game was never released (Squaresoft LOVED doing that) and i hated how slow Aya was, and how weird the weapon system was so i never really beat it until a friend of mine who lives in America gifted me a copy when i told him i was intrested in giving this game an other chance, i'm glad i did it but in my eyes i will always prefer the 2nd game even if PE1 is still a fantastic game...not the 3rd birthday tho, that game is beyond stupid and ridicolous and i never touched it since release
Not just my all time favorite game but the weapon modding (although complicated at first) is the most satisfying god tier insane sh*t ive ever seen, its so fun.
This is the game that taught me the importance of inventory management, back in the day. I hated the tank controls in PE2, didn't mind the systematic area-clearing/backtracking, but liked the more realistic weapons and Aya's ability set.
Parasite EVE 2 was so fucking good,i played first than PE1 was so scaring playing at night, definitely one of the 3 best games i played in any console ever, seriously. good video thanks
I loved Parasite Eve. It's so sad it never got a true follow up. I also really enjoyed the 3rd Birthday though. It wasn't the best story and wasn't really a Parasite Eve game, but the gameplay was really fun. And that's always the most important thing to me. I'll play a game with a truly awful story and amazing gameplay all day. But immediately drop a game with an amazing story and awful gameplay immediately.
This is why I check out back catalogues. I never knew the third one existed, but I've never had a PSP. Didn't know there was a novel that this was a sequel for either. So I'm definitely going to need to find that now. That first game is one of my favorites and I hardly ever see it mentioned. One small correction, 99% of all guns manufactured in the last 100 years use magazines, not clips, otherwise it's an excellent retrospective.
I personally love all three Parasite Eve games. All of them are are rather fun in their own ways. And yes I am pretty certain The Third Birthday is called that because they couldn't get the rights to the Parasite Eve name after the author of the book disliked Parasite Eve 2. (Also Character assassination... heh funny you should say that.)
i was an Xbox kid and never really played the PlayStation much back then even though a lot of my friends where PlayStation players. because of that reason i never played any of the resident evil games but i did play parasites' eve and i still remember a lot of the game that i saw in this video so thanks for the trip down memory lane. this is the first video i watched of yours but will watch more now again good video. suggestion for another game i think about on occasion would be Vigilante 8. again i was busy play Zelda on 64 then playing Xbox so i missed the twisted metal era and played vigilante 8 first so it stuck with me. thanks
Do not know if anyone mentioned it but the areas where the encounters are are are called Hotspots due to the mdna being hottest there. That is what I read a while back at least. also, the third birthday is not a sequel, per se, it’s set in an alternate universe.
Great video. I loved this game as a teenager. Been wanting to check out the second one for 20 years now and during the covid doldrums I've been feeling a resurgence in interest in maybe finally doing that.
Oh my god this is a deep cut lmao Don't worry, Oneish, it's a joke. I had a commenter a long time ago that watched ads in full and left a similar comment - it felt so bad telling them they'd wasted an hour watching an ad just to support the video!
Literally my defining game, Aya is queen of sass, matched only by Eve, a great story, lots of science to learn, a unique variation of mutant powers and just that score, oh that score~ I love everything in this series, yes, even 3rd Birthday, if you haven't beaten it you will not understand why and i say shame on you (yes i hate the gameplay and fanservice, but i beat it twice in the same day it came out cause that underlying chracter bit is just... omg when you think about it) and the book and movie are just staples in my life~ Its unique, and thats the best part. Its weird its now becoming youtube popular, but whatever~ its good, ppl should try it.
Parasite Eve 2 takes everything that's good with PS1-era resident evil and refines it into the ultimate narrative/atmospheric experience it's not as ""scary"" as resi, it's not a survival horror like resi (since it WANTS you to hunt enemies) but it's FUN, it IS scary, and aya's character is bloody great. Jill's got nothin' on her. The story's real nice. PE2 is a masterpiece with a shitton of replay value it's just great
This combat system looks pretty interesting. I've known about this game but just by title and that it was like resident evil in ways. I never knew it was this crazy.
if you like RPG aspects/mechanics PE1 is one of the best RPGs of all time, unique combat system and RPG aspects/mechanics, along with a great story/plot, and while a much shorter RPG (can be speed run in 3 hrs) (having no tons of "side quest areas" and no long drawn out epic world saving story/plot and game progression), it's "short and to the point", which is really wonderful, and there's almost no grinding, the game is very balanced, in that you will always end up at clvl 33, by the end of the game for the last PE power, which helps a lot with the final bosses, along with replay ability (power gaming ability and/or trying different weapons and etc customizations, and etc play styles, and/or challenges) and a special dungeon too. Also, it has great characters, and is set back in the "good ol' days", where a cop can slug the brains out of a harassing reporter, laughs, and also has a sexy powerful independent bad'ss stoic/silent female lead, though we get to know her through her actions, who shoulder checks her wussy "date", whom she was only going out with as her fellow cops had set her up with, due to her being such a workaholic, thinking she needed some fun/recreation and relaxation from her job as a cop (which she has only been for a few months/weeks), and pulls out a gun from her thigh strap holder, while in her fancy date dress and high heels, to take on a "mutant" woman, who just burnt everyone up with spontaneous combustion... Oh, and unlike RE, this is based on, and uses, actual science (biology) too (though obviously it exaggerates some stuff and/or goes into sci-fi with some stuff), if you into that nerdy type of stuff, laughs since we got a "batman vs superman" movie.... we need a movie of a 3-way battle between: Aya Brea (PE) vs Alice/Jill (RE) vs Selene (Underworld) to determine whom is the most sexy OP bad'ss woman, lol -------- if you don't like RPGs, and you like RE type of game play, then you'll like PE2 much more, as I think it still has a good story/plot (I've never played it myself, I'm not interested in it), though it completely diverges from PE1
@@davidzhang4294 I've seen a fanfic crossover (a work in progress) on Archive Of Our Own that has Aya and Lara, plus a third character (Wendy Watson from "The Middleman") working together. archiveofourown.org/works/12747510/chapters/29075886
That game is fantastic. A true masterpiece from a golden age for video games. Games from 90s could have an awful graphics from modern standards but their gameplay and storytelling was remarkable. Truly one of a kind.
Thank you for the retrospective on this gem of a game. I played this game for the first time shortly after it was just released and I went into it blind. I had never heard about it before I played it, and the opening cinematic and music blew me away at the time. I played it start to finish several times and kept levelling up that way and eventually even beat the Chrysler Building boss. At the time I wasn't used to games that were so deeply story based. To say this game is story based is an understatement. Even now I have the music from the soundtrack playing in the background while playing Warframe missions. Btw, I'm newly subscribed to your channel so I wouldn't know but have you played the PS2 game entitled "Primal?" It features the characters Jen and Scree. The mechanics of the gameplay were very badly designed but I also played that game several times start to finish only because I loved the story so much. The friendship that developed between the two main characters made all the tedium of getting through the levels totally worth it. Anyway, thanks again for this retrospective.
I really love the entirety of the PE series, just a really good series and I feel like one of the only people who like 3rd Birthday despite its very glaring flaws
A song that could be considered a forgotten track from the PE OST: Nigel Stanford, "Robots vs. Music", from his album Automatica. And a damn cool music video!
I actually just beat The 3rd Birthday a couple days ago for the first time. I loved it. The story made zero sense to me. There is a reason Aya’s character is so different in the 3rd Birthday and you learn that in the game. The battles were fun even though a lot of the enemies are underwhelming. The gun load out system is super fun. Liberation mode is fun even though it doesn’t last long. It has some of the absolute best cinematics you will ever see I will tell you that. I loved it I thought it was a great game on its own. I recommend playing it fer sure.
Seconded. I know everyone gives 3rd Birthday crap but it is a really fun game if a bit batshit insane. Then again i think I'm in the minority of players who loves all 3 PE games. 1 is the OG with a nice balance of RPG and horror. 2 is not only beautiful but also super intense in terms of combat. They're all good games in their own ways,
For me, I love the classic Resident Evil games, and Parasite Eve 2 is one of my favorite games of all time, I mean Resident Evil with RPG element, give me 10, I don't hate Parasite Eve 1 but I didn't sync with it, maybe I'll try it again in the future but, meanwhile, I prefer Vagrant Story where that gameplay has more sense
Parasite Eve was one of my favorite games growing up i played through each game four times I enjoyed it that much and really wish they would make another one or remaster them but they best left where they are
Even if we can't get the exact Parasite Eve franchise itself back, I'd love to see a soft reimagining/modernization of the gameplay approach and that horror-RPG hybrid concept. It probably wouldn't work nearly as well today with a modern market, but you never know!
And then we got parasite eve 2 while I loved it very much it was no parasite eve. Thank you for shedding light on one of the best rpgs ever made imo also, don’t forget vagrant story if you haven’t done it already.
Vagrant Story is one that I'd like to look at down the road, I was more than impressed when I played it a few years back for a video with my buddy minimme!
Jumping in for another comment. I’ve watched this video a couple times now. Please do a Legend of Mana retrospective. It’s my all time favorite game and I would love to see someone of your talents review it. Please.
Following the Square-Enix's trend of remastering classics of their era, I could easily see the company venturing into Parasite Eve as the next project because, due to the story, setting and mechanics, it is highly accessible and can be easily delved into especially for fresh new players while remaining one of the kind experience. It's a crime it never got the official European release because I can easily see it being successful in that region. It's not as highly Japanese orientated as other squaresoft counterparts, it takes place in New York during Christmas and the RPG mechanics are easy to pick up and play especially for people who aren't really deep into RPG's and it's about dozens of hours long. It could have been a solid Holiday release in Europe and a proper replacement to fill up the gap until FFVIII comes along since no major FF game was set for that year. It might have been a sleeper hit in Europe. Releasing the sequel without the first game defeats the whole purpose. I would have preferred the remaster route rather than a remake because, being aware of Square-Enix's record, they'd probably add some needless story filler to fill up the gaps for an already perfect story as it is and they'd probably end up adding some arbitrary sidequest that add nothing to the plot just to stretch out the runtime. They can just enhance the visuals, speed up the run cycle and give the mechanics a proper polish and be done with it.
PE1 and 2 are among my favourite ps1 games..P E, R.E, Dino Crisis, Silent Hill, MGS.. i didn't play FF7 until i found ffx on ps2 although i always remember gawking at box art at the rental store, PE was the closest thing to an RPG i had experienced until then.
I’ve got a massively underrated and incredible game (and experience) for you to do next: Xenoblade Chronicles X. The game is one of the most finely crafted open world games ever made, with an addicting combat system and playstyle customization....yet it’s not only the black sheep of the Xenoblade series, it’s almost never discussed.
Absolutely brilliant game and thank you for reviewing. I never played the second one as I didn't like the switch to the resident evil style of play. I did finally get to watch a full walkthrough of the 3rd Birthday by a youtuber (LostTimeGaming) who has done a full complete walkthrough of all 3 games. The third birthday - not so good:D
Thank you for the kind words, and for watching of course! I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one that just couldn't vibe super well with PE II's direction shift.
@@TheGoldenBolt The direction shift in Third Barfday is even more extreme. Sqeenix lost the licensing agreement (because PE2 displeased Sena-san) and had to give Aya an entirely different powerset (think Assassin's Creed), absolutely zero mention of mitochondria, and they absolutely twist/betray the established personalities of several characters. But, don't take my word for it, see for yourself...the reaction should be interesting.
You're one of those mystical few that enjoys all three games then, the ones I mentioned near the end of the video! Do you have a favorite of the bunch?
I loved Parasite Eve. I still play it every now and then on my phone. I didn't like the change to the battle system in the second one and never got a chance to play 3rd birthday.
Fun fact. mitochondria were a 'proto' cell organism. It has rna, a simpler version of dna. When the first cells came into being, they formed a symbiotic relationship.
Played 3rd birthday first and had fun. Played PE1 after and adored it then played PE2. Hated the tank controls but stuck with it and turned into my fav PE game. After experiencing them in that order I know for a fact I would have hated 3rd birthday if i played it last. Does a complete disservice to the series story-wise. Still enjoyed it but doesnt hold a candle to the charm of the first two.
As someone who not only played 3rd Birthday and actually really liked it as well as the previous two games I can still absolutely understand why others wouldn't like it. The plot really is nonsensical especially compared to the other two games....until you get to the end and it actually ties everything together extremely well (imo). That being said, having to play through the entire game for that "Aha!" moment, no matter how good, is rather egregious. Nonetheless, I still want remakes/remasters of all three games because story aside I found the mechanics and gameplay in each to be unique and fun, that haven't been recreated in that fashion in any other game to date that I'm aware of.
and going beyond "high school biology class of the 'powerhouse of the cell' and its ATP/ADP processes"... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitochondrial_DNA mitochondria is pretty much the basis of all genetics/ancestry stuff (including the human genome project), as we can use the female lineage of their mitochondria as " genetic markers", enabling all the genetics/ancestry stuff we do and know/learned about with our selves/species including about how we traced modern humanity (homo sapiens sapiens: wise wise man) to women in south africa, as the game/klamp gives the science-history lesson of it too, which has also been proven with anthropology as well... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toba_catastrophe_theory humanity (homo sapiens: wise man) had colonized the entire earth, but then super volcano mt toba erupted ~75,000 years ago, and along with the ensuing ice age, wiped out all of early humanity, except for humans in south africa (the only place not touched by the ice age). These few surviving humans would re-populate the earth, and that's why all current (modern) humans (homo sapiens sapiens) of today have such similar DNA, as we all came from this last single surviving group of humanity (homo sapiens) in south africa ("last/final" humanity, homo sapiens: wise man, arose in east africa ~300,000 years ago, in the great rift valley, in mostly what is now the country of ethiopia, and had then spread/populated across the world, but our modern humanity came from a last single surviving group of humanity, homo sapiens: wise man, in south africa as it was the only place untouched by the ice age after the mt toba eruption 75,000 years ago)
My experience with this series is pretty limited unfortunately. I played The 3rd Birthday around the time it came out and that was my entry point into these series. So obviously I was pretty confused, especially when I looked into the previous two games that had absolutely nothing to do with the 3rd game. (Not even sharing the same title. Lol) I finished the 3rd Birthday twice, because the gameplay was fun, and I did ironically enjoy the story. As much of a trainwreck and nonsense it was. I bought PE1 on PSN and played about halfway through. I never finished it sadly, but what I did play I remember enjoying. Definitely need to play it again one day.
Funny how you covered this game, but you did not cover the successor that recycled part of it's gameplay features later. Vagrant Story C'mon, you can do it....
This one of the few horror games I’ll play. Mainly due to me not being that great in normal survival horror games. Here’s to hoping we’ll get a new game or remake soon
When it comes to Parasite Eve this game was my very first horror experience outside of Resident Evil that i was both terrified of and loved. I still love playing Parasite Eve or watching others play it around Xmas time on Twitch as it's one of the only Xmas Horror RPGs in existence. This game deserves a proper remake for everything it did right... and it's sequels should be tossed in a fire just saying. Aya Brea is one of the forgotten strong female characters that alot of teens grew up playing and admiring. For me personally if FF7 is getting a remake I see no reason why Parasite Eve can't get one... as long as we keep Tetsuya Nomura AWAY FROM WRITING IT! PLEASE! After what he did to Aya in 3rd Birthday he needs to stay as an artist, never let this man near the directors chair or creative side again!!
Thanks so much for watching! Hopefully I've helped take you down memory lane a bit - or introduced you to this fantastic game. If you've got another classic game you'd love to see me cover, let me know below!
Okay, hear me out, The World Ends With You.

FFVII, VIII, IX, Xenogears, Parasite Eve, Chrono Cross, and so many other more all on the PS1 and they are all just masterpieces in their own right.
Their new games are better though
@@aeroga2383 some are, but the majority are just mediocre trash with the avengers as the lowest point I know of
@@aeroga2383 Not even close to the SNES & PS1 era, not by a long shot!
I want a remake of this so bad
i have a lot of great memories with this game. my next door neighbor didn't have that many ps1 games, so we'd just play this over and over again. whenever i think of great, yet short RPGs, parasite eve 1 immediately comes to mind.
It's definitely jumped up on my list too, for shorter RPGs! I can see myself coming back to NG+ every now and then, it's just such a tightly-packed game (and like I said, we can't really get more of it in the sequels!)
0:49 - *cries for Megami Tensei on the NES*
Well said. I totally agree with you.
Cheers from Canada
So I'm sure someone has pointed it out already, but the Megami Tensei series is actually based off a book series, several are even direct sequels to the original novel, and released several years earlier.
I like to see a Koudelka retrospective video.
I love legend of dragoon, parasite eve and koudelka, great games overshadow by the more popular mainstream titles
Wish those games got rereleased at some point
35:51 oops
it's too late now deal with it
This was a great retrospective to watch! I'd like to pick up Parasite Eve someday
Love this game. I was hoping they’d have a remake. One of the best games in history.
/me takes a shot of alcohol)
Also two fun facts, author Hideaki Sena is Ph.D.
My favorite game as a kid! The cutscenes were truly scary! I really do hope they remake this masterpiece.
Love it's snow covered Manhattan look, the game has always been dripping with atmosphere. And it's a fairly short playthrough for an RPG if it's vintage which is nice. Always felt like it's missing a little something but it's still great.
I plug my ps3 in every December and boot up PE for a nice little Christmas playthrough, such an amazing game 🤘🏼❤️
lol “they wouldn’t do that right?”
…
*First 3 notes of Aeris’ theme plays.*
Brilliant!
As always, fantastic quality. Glad I got to vicariously experience this game through your video!
Thank you a bunch, as always, I'm glad I could help bring the game onto your radar!
I love to watch long videos during my work day so I'll take your advice and go straight into another one thank you! Great video!
Thank you for the retrospective ! Your channel is underrated !
Thank you very much for the kind words, my friend!
Harlan Ellis wrote a short story called “I have no mouth and I must scream” which had an adventure game that was a sequel to it written by Ellis who also voiced the main antagonist/sort of narrator
Imagine a Parasite eve remake with a touch of modern open world game play. Parasite eve was my first love in the RPG genre.
I'm literally begging for this type of game. A open world PE where after exploring maybe go back to the station and spend your hard earned BP, with tones of weapons and pe to use. Thing that annoys me if they made the game right they would sell millions of copy's.
One of my all time favorites, came out when I was in high school, was immediately drawn to the whole "JRPG in a modern setting" thing
First "big" game I ever beat (at all of 24 hours)
I know this is like a year ago but the comment about this game being the first to be a sequel to a novel, I though or at least could have sworen the first game set as a full sequel to a novel was one of the first Megami Tensei games.
There's also a Fahrenheit 451 game and as someone else pointed out, a "I have no mouth, and I must scream" game.
One of my favorite game of all time, thx for the nostagia trip
I luv Parasite Eve 1, Tried 2, but tank controls, and then third birthday....I agree with the Sphere Hunter on that
Yep
I remember hearing at somepoint that Megami Tensei is supposed to based off a novel series but I don't know if it qualifies as a sequel
Definitely love PE. One of my favorite games. If you want to play another game that is super story driven, you should check out Tales of Symphonia.
That bit of music right before you start talking about day six, is that from Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando? At Megacorp on Oozla.
Have you played RDR2? :-D
Thank you very much! And hey, given that it's right about the same time the game takes place, now's definitely a perfect time to pick it back up!
bolt i really really really this time tried to get through the adverts but they go for 7 years and i really just had to click skip ad im sorry
wait, is this a joke i'm missing, cuz i was under the impression you actually had to click on the ad, not watch it
Oh my god this is a deep cut lmao
Don't worry, Oneish, it's a joke. I had a commenter a long time ago that watched ads in full and left a similar comment - it felt so bad telling them they'd wasted an hour watching an ad just to support the video!
You'll watch ads twice next time ;)
Literally my defining game, Aya is queen of sass, matched only by Eve, a great story, lots of science to learn, a unique variation of mutant powers and just that score, oh that score~
I love everything in this series, yes, even 3rd Birthday, if you haven't beaten it you will not understand why and i say shame on you (yes i hate the gameplay and fanservice, but i beat it twice in the same day it came out cause that underlying chracter bit is just... omg when you think about it) and the book and movie are just staples in my life~
Its unique, and thats the best part. Its weird its now becoming youtube popular, but whatever~ its good, ppl should try it.
Parasite Eve 2 takes everything that's good with PS1-era resident evil and refines it into the ultimate narrative/atmospheric experience
it's not as ""scary"" as resi, it's not a survival horror like resi (since it WANTS you to hunt enemies) but it's FUN, it IS scary, and aya's character is bloody great. Jill's got nothin' on her. The story's real nice. PE2 is a masterpiece with a shitton of replay value it's just great
This combat system looks pretty interesting. I've known about this game but just by title and that it was like resident evil in ways. I never knew it was this crazy.
In many ways it's the most "90s game" imaginable to me - the licensing deal is what pushes it over the top.
this game also got a tons of replay value. however parasite eve 2 was kind of a failure
if you like RPG aspects/mechanics
PE1 is one of the best RPGs of all time, unique combat system and RPG aspects/mechanics, along with a great story/plot, and while a much shorter RPG (can be speed run in 3 hrs) (having no tons of "side quest areas" and no long drawn out epic world saving story/plot and game progression), it's "short and to the point", which is really wonderful, and there's almost no grinding, the game is very balanced, in that you will always end up at clvl 33, by the end of the game for the last PE power, which helps a lot with the final bosses, along with replay ability (power gaming ability and/or trying different weapons and etc customizations, and etc play styles, and/or challenges) and a special dungeon too. Oh, and unlike RE, this is based on, and uses, actual science (biology) too (though obviously it exaggerates some stuff and/or goes into sci-fi with some stuff), if you into that nerdy type of stuff, laughs
since we got a "batman vs superman" movie....
we need a movie of a 3-way battle between:
Aya Brea (PE) vs Alice/Jill (RE) vs Selene (Underworld)
to determine whom is the most sexy OP bad'ss woman, lol
--------
if you don't like RPGs, and you like RE type of game play, then you'll like PE2 much more, as I think it still has a good story/plot (I've never played it myself, I'm not interested in it), though it completely diverges from PE1
@@redmoonbloodmoon3161 Ada Wang? Lara Croft?

This was fantastic, very enjoyable to watch. Thanks you so much!
That game is fantastic. A true masterpiece from a golden age for video games. Games from 90s could have an awful graphics from modern standards but their gameplay and storytelling was remarkable. Truly one of a kind.
We need a remake!
definitely
This was one of my fav games, played it a few times & did the Tower during game +
I learned piano specifically so I could play the end credits theme myself.
I loved the first game that much.
I remember this game. I was like 10 when it first came out. I had nightmares upon completing it but it really was some of squares greatest work.
I loved Parasite Eve 1 & 2. I would love a remake!
Same but I doubt they will do another one. I just want a PE 3 open worlds with tons of items to farm to keep me playing and things fresh lol.
I recall playing this. And the Central Park stuff. And that is it lol
Then it might be time to go back!
Jumping in for another comment. I’ve watched this video a couple times now. Please do a Legend of Mana retrospective. It’s my all time favorite game and I would love to see someone of your talents review it. Please.
This game was criminally underrated.
YES!! I adored Parasite Eve as a kid.
We need a new Parasite Eve with longer game play and put it on all systems
I should replay this game over Christmas, starting on the 24th.
Now's your chance!
@@TheGoldenBolt Already on it.
Classic game, deserves a HD remaster, and should be released on PS4/5, Switch, PC, etc.
Parasite Eve was one of my top 5 games back in the day
I’ve got a massively underrated and incredible game (and experience) for you to do next: Xenoblade Chronicles X.
@@TheGoldenBolt Most "real" PE fans (including me) pretend that 3B doesn't exist, LOL.
This is my all time favorite game trilogy
You're one of those mystical few that enjoys all three games then, the ones I mentioned near the end of the video! Do you have a favorite of the bunch?
I see literally anything pertaining to parasite Eve I watch
I loved Parasite Eve. I still play it every now and then on my phone. I didn't like the change to the battle system in the second one and never got a chance to play 3rd birthday.
Fun fact. mitochondria were a 'proto' cell organism. It has rna, a simpler version of dna. When the first cells came into being, they formed a symbiotic relationship.
It's always nice to see this game get some credit.
6:28 Basically, Psychic Powers and Genetic mutations at the Cellular level.
Only people who has played this wonderful and perfect game will really get chills when the name parasyte eve is mentioned
Great Video !! Hopefully one day Square remembers they still own the rights to this game and get started on a new one
I would have loved to see Aya somehow creating a new breed of awakened mitochondria people...
The soundtracks in this game is epic.
I find it interesting how no one ever mentions Vagrant Story has the same battle system.
Id say it slowly wanders behind you rather than quickly chases you, lol
Did you know the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell?
and going beyond "high school biology class of the 'powerhouse of the cell' and its ATP/ADP processes"...
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitochondrial_DNA
mitochondria is pretty much the basis of all genetics/ancestry stuff (including the human genome project), as we can use the female lineage of their mitochondria as " genetic markers", enabling all the genetics/ancestry stuff we do and know/learned about with our selves/species
including about how we traced modern humanity (homo sapiens sapiens: wise wise man) to women in south africa, as the game/klamp gives the science-history lesson of it too, which has also been proven with anthropology as well...
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toba_catastrophe_theory
humanity (homo sapiens: wise man) had colonized the entire earth, but then super volcano mt toba erupted ~75,000 years ago, and along with the ensuing ice age, wiped out all of early humanity, except for humans in south africa (the only place not touched by the ice age). These few surviving humans would re-populate the earth, and that's why all current (modern) humans (homo sapiens sapiens) of today have such similar DNA, as we all came from this last single surviving group of humanity (homo sapiens) in south africa
("last/final" humanity, homo sapiens: wise man, arose in east africa ~300,000 years ago, in the great rift valley, in mostly what is now the country of ethiopia, and had then spread/populated across the world, but our modern humanity came from a last single surviving group of humanity, homo sapiens: wise man, in south africa as it was the only place untouched by the ice age after the mt toba eruption 75,000 years ago)
Vagrant Story
C'mon, you can do it....
One of the BEST GAMES EVER MADE! 1 & 2!!!
Aya Brea for PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale 2
At this point, she's got better odds of getting into Smash, clearly! lol
@@TheGoldenBolt A man can dream, can't he?
I loved this game so much .the 2nd was an action rpg but was also great
Parasite EVE 2 is better than any PS1 RE in every single way. Amazing game
