As a Black man in America, I see parallels in the Palestinian struggle with oppression with our struggle which has gone on eight generations. Will these people whose history is replete with these relationships EVER see "the error of their ways?" Will these systems they have created have to die from their own contradictions or will a multi-polar world have to wrest power from them?
Dr. Raja, you/Freire speak truth. This settler behavior is a common practice of colonizers, which has not stopped. It is the story of America against the indigenous people, against African whom they enslaved/exploited, and the placement of Japanese in interment camps, etc. I believe that settler colonizers have never been in touch with their humanity because they see everyone as a threat to their survival thus creating a vicious cycle of increasing violence.
I would like to corroborate the concept of the liberators freeing the oppressors with a very similar concept from the Dalai Lama during a panel discussion at the University of Arkansas many years ago, that someone who defends an innocent person from being murdered is an act of compassion to the assailant, even if the assailant dies, by preventing that person from committing murder.
This reminds me of an Islamic hadith: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Help your brother, whether he is an oppressor or he is an oppressed one. People asked, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)! It is all right to help him if he is oppressed, but how should we help him if he is an oppressor?" The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "By preventing him from oppressing others."
Those ideas from Paulo Freire are the foundation of the Theology of Liberation that about the same time developed the Catholic Peruvian Priest Gutierrez
The oppressor believes he is entitled to his privileges and that exploitation needed to provide those privileges is acceptable and to be expected as the natural way of things.
