I have both Reaper and EZ Drummer. I'm also not a drummer. This lesson was extremely valuable. Thanks for taking the time to do this video. You're really good at teaching.
No need to drag them individually! In the main REAPER timeline, place the curse where you want to start the gradual time change and hit shift+C. This will create a tempo point. Double click on it and check the "gradually transition to next marker" box. The find the point where you want the transition to stop and hit shift+C. Make this tempo be the final tempo once it's slowed down. REAPER will transition between the two. Then, just add the original tempo again later on. Hope this helps!
Also, you may have to go into EZDrummer's mixer and manually assign any or every piece you need to which ever created Reaper track (ie. "track 1" goes to the automatically created reaper track "EZ1", track two, to "EZ2", and so on), then each reaper track after the main sampler's track will respond and be able to be manipulated directly in reaper.
Agreed! This video is over a year old, and I've been using routing since, but I've left this up to offer an alternative method. Thanks for the comment!
I understand that you can't be expected to read through all the prior comments, but this was an old technique. There's an updated tutorial that address the Reaper automatic routing, and also teaches how to build the routing yourself.
I'm not sure if you've since learned how to automatically create separate tracks for EZDrummer, but if not here: In a new project, instead of manually creating a new track and then inserting the EZD VSTi into it, instead go strait to "insert" at the top, and hit "Virtual Instrument on new track...", then select EZDrummer. Only THEN will it ask you if you want seperate tracks for each piece. Upon saying "yes", it will automatically create those new tracks and route them accordingly for you. :)
@mauq4 It is a song made by me! Just something I threw together for the intro for this video! There's a decent chance I'll work it into a song for the next thrash metal album I do. Thanks for asking!
do you know how to change the panning of individual drum hits?? I normally do this in the same spot where u adjust the velocity in the drum editor. i been doing velocities for decades, and panning, but lately i've started using reaper and cubase, which are almost exactly the same in how their drum editors work, but when i go down to the bottom and change over to panning from velocity to adjust hte panning of each individual drum attack, nothing happens. reaper cbase don't achknowledge the panning of the individual hits. -also in reaper, it has a built in function to separate tracks so you can add effects and use the built in mixer on the individual drum parts. insert virtual instrument on new track > VSTI > ezdrummer (16 out) build routing confirmation > say okay.> go to each channel in the ez drummer mixer > at the bottom of each channel click "trk 1" and select the channel you want. > i.e. trk 1 will put kick on channel 1 added to the mixer, trk 2 will move the snare to the mixer channel 2, etc. if you don't have the shit set to auto build then as follows. add vsti > ezdrummer (16 out) > open your ezdrummer window > right click the column in the left > from the drop down menu select "build 16 channels of midi routing to this track" and that will more or less do exactly what you did automatically. instead of having to add each track individually. without the need for "rendering to wav" it will process them all in realtime, and give you control over ezdrummer though reaper's built in mixer. pretty fast, and it's only a few clicks. fiddle with it, and you should figure it out. at anyrate, my issue is with panning individual drum hits from withen the drum editor at the bottom. anyone got any clues why it's not panning the individual drum hits??
No worries at all. I can't really diagnose what's going on without you walking me through exactly what you're doing, step by step. There's actually a different (better) way to do this anyway, using routing. If you check my channel for "Home Recording - Lesson 7 - Routing - Viking Guitar University" it'll show you how to do it that way. Hope this helps!
Quick question: when separating the instruments onto separate tracks (i.e., putting a MIDI piano roll with only snare hits...only kick hits...etc...), does this make any difference in the ROOM sound? In other words, do the overheads still pick up the snare and kick as if they were in the same room, just like in stereo mode where there is bleed from each instrument?
You should just right click on the Ezdrummer mixer and select multi channel so it will auto put the drums on seperate tracks, much quicker. But your way will work.
I don't recall off the top of my head, but I'm most likely using the reverb plugin from the Kjaerhus Audio Classic series. TH-cam won't let me directly link, but if you google it you'll find it. And it's free.
@ansgarosmusic I agree that it doesn't lock you into your drum patterns and allows for changes later, but I don't think you have as much control since you still get bleed through on the "overhead" and "room" mics. This seems more specific, and you don't need to keep that hefty VSTi loaded up. Anssi, do a vid on routing!
Hey vikingguitar, very helpful video, but i have a question, i'm using the Metalheads expansion for EZDrummer, can put a drum map for this one or send me the txt file ? thanks alot man!
Uh, you mean save the whole song or save individual drumbeats in EZ drummer to plug into other songs later? I don't know if you can save patterns to EZ drummer, but you could save the Reaper project file and then just open it and copy it later.
That's the stock Reaper EQ "ReaEQ." It's really good and the main EQ I use. I don't suspect it's available if you're not using Reaper, though. Thanks for watching!
@xXxMetalJunkiexXx Unfortunately, I don't have a drum map for the metalheads expansion. However, it's online. It won't let me post the link here, but google search "reaper note maps for toontrack drum libraries" and go to the first link (the godprobe.com one). Hope this helps you out!
I assume this video is just a little outdated? With the new version of Reaper, it is my understanding that you can create a template to route each drum from its source (Ezdrummer) to their own track, so you can bypass all of the drum part deletions. My question is; does anyone know exactly how to do that? I am fumbling through the interfaces, and it seems like it should be simple, but I am missing something in the routing.
I've been reading a lot of things from people having trouble getting EZDrummer to work with Windows 7 64-bit. By any chance is this what you're running?
The room should act like normal. When you're playing the MIDI notes for just the kick, for example, it's still sending those notes through the kick, overhead, and room mics. Snare goes through both snare mics, the room, and the overhead. The only thing you don't get is snare rattle from toms and stuff.
You can name the notes yourself, or open a pre-made list. Go to File---->Custom Note Names. You can download a list by googling "Reaper Note Maps for Toontrack Drum Libraries" and then going to the godprobe.com link. Also, I'm using Reaper 4.151 right now. I don't recall what version was in the video :-P
Appreciate the video and thanks for making it but honestly you should give the routing method another try since it does exactly the same thing you're doing in about 1/20th of the time you took. Great video nonetheless, keep it up :D
You'll get different answers from different people, but I think so. You can probably find it on eBay for cheaper. I've used it for almost everything I've recorded over the last four years.
Great video, thanks so much. The only comment I have that I would appreciate if you could go just a little bit slower. Nothing against your videos, they're really good. Just slow down a bit of you can. Thanks.
no reason for him to slow down (although there's a lot of un usable information so he could just eliminate a lot of it) - So just hit the pause button until you catch up
I really don't know what could be causing that. My best advice is to go to "forum *dot* cockos *dot* com" and post there. The Reaper forum has a lot of super knowledgeable people and they can almost certainly help you. Sorry I can't be more help.
I have both Reaper and EZ Drummer. I'm also not a drummer. This lesson was extremely valuable. Thanks for taking the time to do this video. You're really good at teaching.
Ive seen this video many times and it is a great reference, thanks man.
You rock. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!
Could not figure it out myself, so this is a life-saver!
This is absolutely fantastic. Extremely helpful and insightful. Thank you. I am definitely subscribing.
Thanks man! I might turn this into a full song at some point.
No need to drag them individually! In the main REAPER timeline, place the curse where you want to start the gradual time change and hit shift+C. This will create a tempo point. This is awesome! Thanks for making this video dude!
That was my Go-To freeverb for a long time!

excellent video, very helpful stuff here.

It is. I remember reading similar things about EZdrummer and Pod Farm when I was about to upgrade, but I don't remember having any problems with it.
man that was a great tutorial, thanks for sharing!
Thanks man. Your video Really help me with this, you're awesome!!
Thank you man, this was really really useful

insert virtual instrument on new track > VSTI > ezdrummer (16 out)

I had the same problem, and instead of muting the other tracks, I had to solo the kick track and that worked.

Yep! This is just a way to do it to taste instead of relying on the algorithm. I'll be doing an updated video soon with more information.
Uh, you mean save the whole song or save individual drumbeats in EZ drummer to plug into other songs later? I don't know if you can save patterns to EZ drummer, but you could save the Reaper project file and then just open it and copy it later.

Hmm. When you have everything muted the way it should be and you play the song, do you just hear one drum line or the whole kit?
You can set up the panning within the EZDrummer VST.
excellent! you are a fabulous teacher! I wish i could upgrade my brain speed like u can with a processor, 2 b as fast as urs!
It's the "Classic Reverb" plugin by Kjaerhus Audio. Pretty damn good, and free!
I'm just getting started in MIDI. I have Reaper and EZ Drummer and I'm having a lot of problems. Hopefully I'll get some help from this.
In the 15:22 of the your video you use specific vst for equilizer but i can't see the name, please let me. thanks a lot.
good video..
When you "draw" your MIDI track with EZDummer, does it automatically pan the toms/cymbals?
GREAT VID! Really helpfull! Cheers!
Maybe old but great starter...Just what I was looking for and should have figured out myself :-)

Yep! It won't let me hotlink here, but they're in the main video description. vikingguitar dot bandcamp dot com.
i wonder if there is a ( COMMAND+PERIOD(.) ) equivalent in reaper.. like pro tools

are u able 2 use a mini drum/keyboard midi in reaper and how to use them?

Thanks for the advice!
Whats the name of the Reverb plugin you use? Its not a Reaper plugin is it?
EZDrummer or a combo of Battery and Natural Drum Kit?
Hey, thanks! Really, it's not about being smart or not, it's just about getting used to the process. You can do it!
Appreciate the video and thanks for making it but honestly you should give the routing method another try since it does exactly the same thing you're doing in about 1/20th of the time you took. Great video nonetheless, keep it up :D
Hey man is the song in the intro made by you? if so what song is it?
Great, thanks!
You'll get different answers from different people, but I think so. You can probably find it on eBay for cheaper. I've used it for almost everything I've recorded over the last four years.
Thanks alot!
Is Ezdrummer worth the €119?
Great video, thanks so much. The only comment I have that I would appreciate if you could go just a little bit slower. Nothing against your videos, they're really good. Just slow down a bit of you can. Thanks.
cool intro
no reason for him to slow down (although there's a lot of un usable information so he could just eliminate a lot of it) - So just hit the pause button until you catch up
This vid is all EZdrummer.
what he's using doesn't sound like ezdrummer-
Dude just hit the multi-out on EZ Drummer & it's all good all Kicks, Snare, toms OH Room mic's...it's much faster & easier.
I really don't know what could be causing that. My best advice is to go to "forum *dot* cockos *dot* com" and post there. The Reaper forum has a lot of super knowledgeable people and they can almost certainly help you. Sorry I can't be more help.
is that tony stark?
NO. Everything must be faster! ;-)
Then what the hell are you doing here, if you know it all...
