This is the way a TH-cam tutorial should be produced - easy to understand without droning on and on and on about non-related content. This is an excellent example, easy to understand segment. Thanks a ton.
David Whittaker but the tutor should go into detail about what their using means, so that the info drills into your head so that you Understand what you're doing. If they don't then you're just blindly mimicking like a fucking sheep.
Thank you so much Ken. This very clear and simple tutorial saved my life today. After my first week of vocal recording for my debut album in a proper studio using a very good condensor mic with an excellent pop filter, I came home really disappointed because the results were pop free and clear but the volume levels were all over the place. The tracks were simply unusable. I then went through your procedure on the first 2 tracks and was amazed, after selecting "Auto make-up", with the results. The difference between my unprocessed tracks and my newly compreseed tracks is phenomenal! The volume of the new tracks is even throughout and loud, which is what I like. This is an audio miracle! Now I just need to learn the pitch correction procedure and I will be able to produce perfect vocal tracks. What a relief! Thank you again Ken.
I've watched more Reaper compressor videos than I really wanted to but this is the best. Very concise and thorough without being too technical. Thank you.
Thank you so much! One of the best Reaper tutorials I've seen! Perfect for those who are just beginning and are not sure what all of the lingo and controls do! The red circle highlighting each control that you changed helps a lot and I appreciated how you compared the before and after and what the FX actually does to the sound wave.
An older video but advice that still holds up today! I recently needed to switch to VSTs to mix my mic settings for live streaming and had to learn Compression on the fly as I no longer had an application just doing it for me. This totally solved the problem for me. Thanks very much!
yes, Ken Theriot. is the best ..I have been watching over hundreds of tutorials..They drove me crazy and going around the circles...so I am buying this Reaper just because of his great tutorial videos easy for me to understand. thank you sooooooooooooooooooooooo much.God Bless you.
Please keep making more tutorials! It was simply the best tutorial I've ever found about compressors, and see that I'm in 2021! Thank you very much and congratulations!
I didn't understand how to use compression at all and just from watching this I was able to fine tune it to my purposes with a little finagling. Thank you!
I was doing my on podcast for 9 years, and only discovered how to properly use this tool now that I'm producing for other people. 😅This is going to save me so much time on my future projects. Thank you!
Many thanks for your guide. I was tinkering with the sliders in a rather blind way, with the result being little more than disappointment and frustration - somehow I had failed at applying basic patience and method. Driven to doubt the possibility of success, I have fortuitously managed to find this video right here, and for this vital assistance of yours I am grateful.
This was exactly what I needed. Been struggling to understand compression as a whole let alone this plugin. I feel like I now have a more confident place to start from. Thanks!
I'm currently evaluating Reaper for recording demoes with my band. Having done only basic editing before with Cool edit on pre-recorded material, your explanation is very helpful. Thanks a lot!
Gods bless you sir. I'm totally new to music production and 'compression' to me was like trying to explain math for physicists to a 3 year old, but now I get it. Thank you!
Excellent video. Clear and concise with examples. Thank you for posting this. FINALLY I can fix the audio right in Resolve without forking out $$ for a plugin.
Hey man, I appreciate this video you did. I thought I had been using my compressor the right way for a while then I realized I've been doing it completely wrong hahaha. This was exactly what I was looking for!
viewing the appearance of the waves from being compressed and comparing make-up-on vs make-up-off is why this video is the best on compression.... i'm a visual learner and seeing what we've changed is the switch that turned on the bulb.... i actually think the 3 representation of the wave is kinda artistic..... anyways....
Excellent tutorial.. well explained with examples! Subscribed! Question - what is (if any).. the correct sequence of fx? Meaning which ones should be added first...? Reverb, Delay, compression..etc....
I have a problem. In the reacomp standalone plugin, on the left side there are 2 green mixers, the first one stands in one place and does not move. What is the problem?
Auto Make-up has saved me. I've been playing with my EQ for some time now trying to hit a nice level where the low bits would sound loud enough without clipping the high bits. No idea this existed (yes I'm a new at this) Thank you
ThankYou Man! ThankYou SOMEONE For Finally & SIMPLY & Truly Explaining (straight to the point) just Exactly What COMPRESSION Is For & What It Does! ThankYou for taking The Mystery out of it for me. Ive been inquiring and its like "Ya Cant go behind the Secret Veil" and ya might see that "the wizard" (All the Pro Audio Engineers) are Human after all, and that WE can do this too. This applies to not only Compression, but All the Mysteries of Audio Engineering. Im sorry No Offesnse to Anyone however Ive been Waiting and waiting for and wondering what the answer is to my age old Question about Compression. Ive been on others pages, subscribed to them, following them, signed up with them and I couldnt get a Clear answer. Thanks TM&A. I just downloaded REAPER Today, & I just Mixed a Vocal Track. I Thought The Compression was under The EQ (with Gate, Compression, Subtract) things...I didnt see The very top of the options like you just showed in the DAW. The way they got it Coded is odd to me. Thanks Man. Its Ok with the Vocal Tracks though. I was just experimenting to attempt to familiarize myself with Their DAW today. I subscribed to you just now too
Would you use compression on a short vocal sample? Of one word? How would you treat that? I'm having trouble in a sample based piece of mine, my samples ripped from vinyl sound horrible in the mixdown and I have been searching for a good way to make it sound good. So far I've found people de-essing tracks, compression, limiting and EQ are the mainstays of treatment. Haven't tried de-essing or limiting yet, but I feel like I overdo things then they sound like hell. Gah!
Would have been cool if you would have rendered the track to a new track. That can be handy from time to time and is also a good little tidbit for people to learn for the future.

Spot on.
This was what it was like back in the days before some young blood felt tutorials could also be documentaries..
7 years later...and still the beast reacomp tutorial
Yup
I agree.
make that 12
I just watched 15 compressor videos, and this is the first one that made complete sense to me. Thank you!

Thanks for the tutorial. I had settings given to me by a "sound engineer" and they never really worked. Your baseline for vocals works perfectly.

And now i actually kind of know what i'm doing when i use a compressor. Thanks!
I'm currently evaluating Reaper for recording demoes with my band. Having done only basic editing before with Cool edit on pre-recorded material, your explanation is very helpful. Thanks a lot!

What do I have to do so the very quiet stuff pops up a little bit?
Great tutorial and even works for Reaper plugin on OBS.

thank you for the very basic language - hope for this beginner!

Would have been cool if you would have rendered the track to a new track. That can be handy from time to time and is also a good little tidbit for people to learn for the future.
I was looking for the same thing Johnnie but he covers this topic in another video. Though on homebrewaudio's channel

Thanks, great tutorial !
Can you manually adjust the gain with this plugin or the auto make-up the only available option?
