OMG! That stuff on the Mama tour rig is stunning. I was so into this stuff that my birthday card from my best friend when I was 16 said 'may you live to see a Vari-Lite'. Glad I eventually became a lighting designer...

I miss the old VL1 fixture.
Thankfully I had the privilege of working as a Vari*lite console operator in the late 80's into the early 90's. Good times!

I loved the use of this on Home by the Sea from Genesis

The Genesis Varlite setups were really jaw-dropping!
      - this promo seems to be from the 1983/4 Mama Tour with Tony in the middle

3:13 lol Interesting how the announcer literally confirms that movers could be controlled by a standard mic cable way back in the 80's but nowadays they must use a DMX cable (which looks exactly the same, if we're speaking about 3-pin). Makes you wonder why the switch & why the lights seemingly go ballistic nowadays if one DARES to use a mic cable in place of a dmx cable lol. Money-making effort by the lighting companies would be my guess, but who knows. Interesting to see, nonetheless.

I'm doing a project for school on Vari*Lites. Does anyone happen to know if this video is showing the series 100 or 200 system, since they were both released in the 80's?

And the award for most uselessly late reply ever on TH-cam... it's the 100 system. The big light show at the end is Genesis' Mama Tour lighting rig which was all VL1s. The fixtures and the desk looked different by the time they upgraded to the 200 system. Hope your project went well!

The first light by varí lite was made in 1981

This was the Genesis light rig from 1984, which significantly built on their pioneering Vari*Lite tour of 1982. I saw both..
