What I LOVE is that Zenk seems to have found this party by accident, like he was looking for the SERIOUS RP table in the D&D room at a local convention and found the half-drunk table instead...
Zenk is the NPC the DM has to bring in for a session to get the party on track because they don't have their crap together. And the hither-thither staff is the mulligan the DM has to put in when the party jacks up his carefully constructed dungeon ("OK, that walking stick you picked up earlier suddenly glows with light . . . ").
@@morrislary4576 No, definitely a mulligan -- a do-over. A MacGuffin is a pursued or desired thing around which the plot revolves but otherwise serves no function.
He's a real dragon in D&D! Apparently, he came from a cat that jumped onto the table when Gary Gygax (co-creator of D&D) was running a session... Even though he's evil, everyone loves Themberchaud 🤣
I had to edit out the thousands of times we kept saying "I can't believe what i'm looking at right now" lol. I left a few in, but yeah, incredible stuff.
"I was born to humans who didn't want a tiefling for a child" -Doric about a minute after first appearing on screen. This is why reactors use subtitles - not just for their deaf viewers, but also so they don't miss things while they laugh or talk.
Several levels higher than the rest of the party and only there for the Underdark section. He also is the only one who seems to understand the larger plot, only partially explains it, and leaves with a "well, gotta go"
Doric is a Tiefling, she even said it when she met them... Simon says that he is 'only half human' after Doric says she thinks humans are selfish, so presumably yes he's a half elf.
The intellect devourer scene was so accurate. This party contained a Paladin, Bard, Barbarian, Sorcerer: Wildmagic and a Druid: Wildshape all who have intelect as a dumpstat. So its propper that the devourers would not be triggered by them to attack.
Doric is indeed a tiefling, and Simon I believe is a half-elf. Also you can get your own Themberchaud (chonky dragon) plush if you’re looking for decorations for your set up!
Depending on DM's rules, spell caster characters can use a arcane focus (easier rules) or collect/buy the material components needed to cast a spell (more meticulous because inventory tracking). The little device on Simon's hip that he spins is probably his material component pouch. The form his pouch takes isn't specific to any official lore, but more likely one of those things that Simon's "player" added in as a way to flavor/explain why he can do Wild Magic, which requires them to roll a dice and get a random magic effect from a table of outcomes.
I figured he had the feat "Ashen Components" if I recall it correctly. It pretty much allows a spellcaster to ignore components in costs up to 1 gold piece. Probably flavorwise replaced with actual ashes.
They made attunement way more interesting in this movie than it actually is in game. The idea that you could potentially fail at attuning to an item is actually kind of cool. It's the kind of thing that could seriously impact the story of a game and mess with all the well laid plans that players or even the DM had.
Only my fellow middle-agers are likely to pick up on this, but the party with the kids in the arena is the live-action version of the group from the D&D cartoon from the 80's. That one has John Francis Daley written all over it 😆
I saw a few episodes of the cartoon myself, but the cameo is so much blink-and-miss-it it's ... well, easy to miss. Paramount even made a trailer highlighting the cameo.
My favorite DnD game mechanic nod of the movie is when Edgin tells Simon "You are at your strongest when you're at your weakest." Sorcerers have a Wild Magic Surge (random magic effect, often super powerful) when they roll a Nat 1. Side Question: when you played, what was your go-to class? Personally I loved playing Rangers in 3.5e, but the class got screwed over in 5e, most of their best traits being given to other classes.
D&D and this world in particular is my special interest and I’m beyond ecstatic that there’s a movie set where I’ve wished I could live since forever and that it’s *awesome*
I finished this movie a month ago and i immediately fell in love with it. Then i headed to TH-cam to see some reactions. About the Lore, they specifically put that prison in the Official Lore cause the producers needed it for the movie 😅 Those Crabs are Rust Monsters and they are the pain of adventure's existence. You can look 'em up For Simon that disk would be his component pouch for his spells but he is a wild magic sorcerer so when he wanted to cast Shield it misfired (sort of) and came out as Reverse Gravity wich is waaaaay above his current level Red Wizards are Agents of Evil and Undead Lords and would love to conquer the world, so if they knew Sofina was One She would be the most wanted person in all the Sword Coast😅 Tieflings usually retains some form of their Fiendish origins, that could be horns, hooves, tails, Yellow eyes, sulfur smell, fangs and so on. Vecna Is arguably a God (he's story is very long and complicate), Szass Tam Is Just a Lich and Lord of Thay. Wich Is impressive but it's like comparing God with the Pope. Usually Undead's regeneration Is stopped by Acid or Fire damage so if a Dragon eats One he's done either or both ways😅 Yes Dragons regenerate yet that Sword hit ( for how the game works) could be a 100 point damage hit and that would not be even 1/3 of his hps .
@@burnbearscomedy The whole film was about him resurrecting his wife. So even though it gave us a few minutes to realise he was about to sacrifice her, that just made it sadder!
Before the movie came out they released a free quest in one of the books that takes place in the prison at the beginning called Revel’s End. I ran it for my sister and my partner and their sister. There was a thief disguised as a guard trying to get a key from a prisoner’s tattoos and get out (my partner’s sister’s character), and a dragonborn detective (my partner’s character) bringing in their human fighter prisoner (my sister’s character). Due to a series of misunderstandings some of which included a set of handcuffs with a missing key led to all of them having to escape. They did so by boat, there’s like an elevator that takes you to a pier. XD
I played that one at a comic convention recently. I and four other players took on pre-generated character sheets, and the moment we found out we were heading to Revel's End, the Jarnathan jokes started flowing. I played a halfling rogue named Fast Eddie who was one of two PCs to actually get to Prisoner 13 while the rest of the party sowed chaos elsewhere in the prison. We actually accomplished our goal and hauled ass outta there.
Vecna is the top dog lich but in this movie we have Szass Tam that is in the top 5. I did enjoy the movie a lot as I both played and GM in Fearûn a lot and not to mention all the computer games like the Eye of the beholder games, The Baldur's Gate games, The Neverwinter night games.

Except he's often seen distributing Bardic Inspiration, such as when he's cheering Holga on during the alleyway escape. It's a bonus action, after all. And you could argue that he uses Vicious Mockery on Sofina there at the end, just to interrupt her next spell. He's probably College of Eloquence. If you think about it, bard spells probably shouldn't have a visual effect. Why, if you can see that he's casting a spell at you, is it going to work as well?
I would disagree. He Inspires every single person in the party, over and over again. Bardic Inspiration at it's finest. They just show it as a person would actually do it, with a kind word, or showing support or playing a song when your friend is sad, not as a magic spell. But a musical rogue also works.
Some think Xenk is a DMPC, I think he's the guest player that was handed notes by the DM on where to take the party. The guest player you bring in because they never played before, and you give a pre-built character so they can get their proverbial feet wet with actually playing the game for the first time, but it's clear that the player cannot stick around and become a mainstay because of scheduling conflicts.
First time heari g of this channel. This was a really fun watch! Can't wait to see more of your videos! Ive been playing D&D on and off since i was 13 (44 now) and i loved this movie! So many of the things you both had to say about it and the feel of it were the same things i thought watching... and re-watching it...and re-re-watching it!😅 It really captured the look and the feel pf D&D so well! I can't wait to see some sequels to this, as long as they can keep the same creative team in charge of putting it all together. Watching interviews with the cast they all look and sound like they each had a genuine blast making this movie, so i would imagine getting them on board wouldn't be difficult. Anyway, great video, fun watching you react to this awesome movie, and i can't wait to see more of your reactions!
Easter egg: Simon the Sorcerer was a computer game back in the early 90s, voice by Chris Barrie, Rimmer from Red Dwarf. The protagonist of the game was a very incompetent sorcerer. Tieflings are a half human/demonic. Additional, some of the spells used in the movie are specific to the Forgotten Realms universe. Bigby's spells show up as does Mordekainen, he is also referenced. It was a surprise Elminster was not. Lastly, she does not show red robes in public as, as a Red Wizard of Thay, she would be killed on sight there.
Yeah yall gonna kill it here, good chemistry for reactions, keep it up, got a sub from me. Also imagine how much of a beast Thumberchaurd would be if he had to chase people around like that more often he already is not a slouch on the chase.
Honestly... this movie was WAY better than it had any right to be. Not perfect, but it WAS FUN and HAD HEART all the way through! THIS is the kind of movies Disney SHOULD be making :D
Thumbs up for hiding and staying inside. I played D&D in the late 70s-early 80s, qnd have fond memories of weekend-long camaigns. This movie is wonderful.
You two are an awesome couple. I love how you feed off of each other with comments. Clearly, you two have done these types of reactions previously. Love it, and thanks.
Honestly we started the channel because we would watch TV and just talk mad shit lol. Thought we should record it and see what happens. So happy you like it!!!
Throwing something down for the algorithm here. It was fun watching the highlights with you both, though. Felt like dropping in on my friend's place and watching it again with them. This movie's just D&D fun times, I hope it does well enough to start up some kind of D&DCU. I guess time'll tell. Anyway, fun reaction. Subbed up and I'll catch you on the next one. Enjoy the day!
That's so nice!!! Thank you so much for the compliments and we appreciate the subb. I hope they make more of these. Even if it's not a direct sequel this world has so many possibilities. Obviously lol
Your entire energy is so good, really enjoyed this reaction. (Fair warning, I have Thoughts and Feels(tm)about this film, and rambling comment follows. TL:DR: Great reaction, Great movie, sad you've already seen TLoVM because I wish I could have seen that. Yay The Last Unicorn.) Dangit, was going to suggest Vox Machina! Lol, but totally fair, I binged each set of episodes the day they came out, and admire the restraint of anyone who managed to wait. The Last Unicorn shirt just fills me with joy. Genuinely my favourite movie. Partially because nostalgia, (it was my childhood "watched until the video literally wore out...and then rented it every week, much to my parents' long-suffering despair" film) but also, even as I get older, I watch it and continue to find new things that resonate. The book is great too, but oddly (for me) I prefer the film. [/random shirt-based tangent] I could waffle about TLU for... way too long. "I'm excited for what this is setting up, but I don't really want to have existed through it." Holy shit! YES! That is the EXACT best way to describe the feeling of this scene I have ever seen. Also, I am stealing it as a future tool to explain why even though I know stuff is about to be a rejection of a trope I still hate it. Thanks! I apologise if 1) you've heard it before and hate it, and/or 2) it's a weird thing to say, but I can't shake it, Katie really strongly reminds me of Amy Dallen, you may have seen her in the TTRPG space, she's fantastic :) You seem to have the same sort of humor, enthusiasm, and casual deep wells of knowledge, and I just couldn't get the comparison out of my brain. I was also very sad about the book. Like, you could have left it on a rock somewhere, you didn't have to destroy it. Like, the sentiment is very dramatic and alll, but my lil' crafting heart is upset :p One of my favorite things in this film is the use of a lot of practical sets and effects. They ARE really well done, and beautiful, but also it's just such a great choice. CGI looks bad in a year, practical effects, while perhaps looking "like effects" will hold up in a decade because they're THERE (see: Jurassic Park and the kitchen scene.) I dunno, I always just feel like film should be treated more like theatre. You don't expect Hamlet's castle to be made of real stone, if the foam bricks wobble it doesn't change the story. Practical effects exist in the scene and give the actors something to play with, and I'll always prefer them.[waffling] Tiny DnD nods, like the "silver thread" for the Alarm spell just make me happy. Again (and apologies for repeating myself but UGH SO GOOD) the background scenes are ALL interesting. You can pause at any point and find something interesting to look at. AND it's all WELL LIT! You can see EVERY scene, from edge to edge, and it's a pleasure to just WATCH this film. None of the "Ye Olde Times Were Dark" tropes where everyone is dressed in shades of "mud" and the only bit of the screen that is visible is one poorly lit cheekbone in the middle of a black frame. *takes breath * I... Might have a pet peeve :p The sand trap WAS all practical! Thousands of hand placed tiles over sand, blown apart by air. SO COOL! Sad you missed the Fresh Cut Grass (FCG) CR reference, (name of one of the characters in the current campaign, but a lot of folks haven't been watching because the start was... a bit rough? Understandable, but it's really getting AMAZING now, it just took a while to warm up.) Heh, sorry not sorry. I only ramble on reactions I enjoy? If it's any consolation? Simon's little dial-a-component-pouch is EVERYTHING, I love it so much. Am including it in every game I run from now on. It makes so much sense! This is a world with artificers, why would it not be something better than "rummage in loose pouches". LOVE a McGuffin :D (that's it that's the comment) 21:08: A Mini Cooper, if you will. (not mine, but spreading the amusement) ...This is already very long, I'll stop.
You guys are goofy AF but I am too. Subbing. Premonitions, predictions, and on the fly judgments, go. Keep up movie reactions. (You knew Owl Bear so +.5)
Loved this film, loved watching you guys watch it. Way more actual humanity in it than pretty much all the non-fantasy films released. I feel that a sequel, same crew acting and developing, would be superb and set it up to become a successful series as everyone I know who’s seen it loved it and it's got some word of mouth. But I really don't know whether a studio exec will have the guts to follow it up versus another superhero film.
@Burn Bears React I kinda cheated though I used to write dnd campaigns for dragon flight 1996. In Seattle and also helped Gary gygax with mordekienes spells. So I'm Uber Nerd I guess

Hell yeah. Thank you for the info!
Yeah yall gonna kill it here, good chemistry for reactions, keep it up, got a sub from me. Also imagine how much of a beast Thumberchaurd would be if he had to chase people around like that more often he already is not a slouch on the chase.
Dude, Thank you so much. Means a lot!
Honestly... this movie was WAY better than it had any right to be. Not perfect, but it WAS FUN and HAD HEART all the way through! THIS is the kind of movies Disney SHOULD be making :D
Ours too!!! We genuinely adored it, both as one who’s always played and another who has no experience with D&D. Great film for both
Thumbs up for hiding and staying inside.
I thought it was an orc too, but apparently the "new cellmate" in the beginning is a hobgoblin.
So fun to watch this with your commentary. Keep this up, your channel should grow like wildfire.
Dude, Thank you! So nice of you to say! We definitely will!
Awesome!!
Air-A-Coke-Rah!!! 😂
"Only one I can think of is Professor X." Jean-Luc Picard, Kojak, Mr. Clean
MR. CLEAN! hahahaha Totally forgot about him.
Love your reaction, and also, to the missus, I LOVe your Last Unicorn shirt, that’s my favorite movie.
That's Katies favorite movie too! I (Travis) actually haven't seen it yet. So maybe we'll react to that next week. I've heard it's super sad.
Also Thank yoooou! so happy you liked our reaction
@@burnbearscomedy a little sad, but soooo worth it! Definitely check it out!
Yeah that t-shirt is cool!!
Szass Tam predates Voldemort by a decade at least. If anything you should be saying "Szass Tam!" when you see Voldemort.
Fair point lol
Being a paladin, Xenk casts on his charisma stat
Just found this channel and im really enjoying your content so far. Keep up the good work, guys! New sub from Brazil 🇧🇷
I haven't played D&D in over 30 years, but I have read a lot of books from the Forgotten Realms series. My favorite character is Drizzt Do'Urden.
21:00
a mini Cooper?
Hahahaha
Best movie this year!
You get an instant sub just for having a Last Unicorn T-shirt, love that movie.
Im happy i caught this movie in cinemas - unfortunately some others in the theatre were not into the move … but i had been dying to see it .
The characters from the 1980s cartoon Dungeons & Dragons was one of the groups that was in The Labyrinth with them
Your entire energy is so good, really enjoyed this reaction.
(Fair warning, I have Thoughts and Feels(tm)about this film, and rambling comment follows. TL:DR: Great reaction, Great movie, sad you've already seen TLoVM because I wish I could have seen that. Yay The Last Unicorn.)
Dangit, was going to suggest Vox Machina!
Like, the sentiment is very dramatic and alll, but my lil' crafting heart is upset :p
One of my favorite things in this film is the use of a lot of practical sets and effects. Practical effects exist in the scene and give the actors something to play with, and I'll always prefer them.[waffling]
Tiny DnD nods, like the "silver thread" for the Alarm spell just make me happy.
Might have a pet peeve :p
The sand trap WAS all practical! Thousands of hand placed tiles over sand, blown apart by air. SO COOL!
Sad you missed the Fresh Cut Grass (FCG) CR reference, (name of one of the characters in the current campaign, but a lot of folks haven't been watching because the start was... a bit rough? Understandable, but it's really getting AMAZING now, it just took a while to warm up.)
Heh, sorry not sorry.
LOVE a McGuffin :D (that's it that's the comment)
21:08: A Mini Cooper, if you will. (not mine, but spreading the amusement)
...This is already very long, I'll stop.
You guys are goofy AF but I am too. Subbing. Premonitions, predictions, and on the fly judgments, go. Keep up movie reactions. (You knew Owl Bear so +.5)
Hahahah Excellent. Thank you for the sub!
Thanks for an entertaining reaction. 😊 I also just reacted to this film yesterday.
Glad that I found your channel.
Thats Awesome! We'll definitely Check it out soon and throw you a sub! Great to know other Reactors like our content as well!
@@burnbearscomedy Yeah, the reactor community is great, with a lot of cool people. 👍 D&D vid is up now, if you want to check it out.
👀 is that a framed picture of Ewan Mcgregor/obiwan? That’s kind of great 😆
It's our lord and savior lmao. Yes its Obiwan
Hizzah nerd im 56 and i know what a tiefling is
HAHAHHAHAHA Damn you Elder Nerd, Damn you!!!!! hahahaha
@Burn Bears React I kinda cheated though I used to write dnd campaigns for dragon flight 1996. In Seattle and also helped Gary gygax with mordekienes spells. So I'm Uber Nerd I guess
@@burnbearscomedy look up mordikeine gygax. You'll be entertained
Yo This is Travis. Katie is currently freaking out because you know the co-creator of D&D. Yo are a legend. We are so honored you watched our video. haha
Love the Last Unicorn shirt. Where did you get it? It’s my favorite animated movie ever and I would love to get that shirt.
Found it on Etsy years ago! So happy you like it! Hopefully you can find one for yourself!
I love the shit out of your nerd commentary. 🔥
THANK YOU!!!
😭 52:29
We cried so much. I (Travis) cried a second time editing it. lol
@@burnbearscomedy understandable. 😊
You shouldn't stand in Xenk Yendar's way. He'd walk all over you if you stand in his very straight line 😅
hahahahahaha nothing can stop him. Not even rocks.
One of the Teams is from the old DnD movie xD
We totally missed that!
I know one of them is from the Saturday-morning cartoon: the one that makes it to the cage.
23:20 She actually mentioned that she's a Tiefling. It's interesting btw that you mentioned her tail a few times but completely ignored the fact that she has horns.
Sometimes when we record these we're too busy talking shit and we'll go back and watch the movie just for fun and realize we missed so much. Especially this movie. We've watched it maybe 6 times now and pick up on a new detail every time. It's so good.
I just found you guys and you remind me of me and my lady, great reaction as well. Edit: i am a LITTLE disappointed that you left out the best Easter Egg in the whole movie tho... its not enough to unsub but i am a little sad now for shame 😂
What did we miss????? I had to leave a lot on the cutting room floor.
@@burnbearscomedy the team that found the axe and were in the cage in the maze was a reference to the 80s dnd cartoon...
@@burnbearscomedy also if you havent SEEN the cartoon you totally should
Jarnathen is or possibly was a arakocra
Ed literally says Jarnathen is an aarakocra
I find it ironic that the tablet of reawakening was trapped. But the horn of death wasn’t?
I enjoyed your reaction alot , thank you!
Thank you so much!
This is more cool stuff the algorithm some how did not recommend…
Thank you for finding us anyway!!!!
You guys are entertaining to watch. Sub!
I may or may not also watched this movie on 🍄
Hell yes. That would have been an intense react on our part lmao
@@burnbearscomedy oh man I lost it at the attuning scene where everything was melting and the illusion chris pine when justice Smith character couldn't hold his concentration
I was recovering from surgery and high af on oxy when I watched it with my DnD group lol Best ever.
My husband is a DM, he says his goal is to kill the party. And if you play a character like a bard that all they want to do is willie as some do, he will give them an incurable disease. Stupidity has consequences.
hahahaha
They would have been pardoned. But I guess it wouldn’t have been much of a movie if they didn’t break out of jail
Didnt u say you know D&D, and u didnt recognize a tiefling?
You are both cute, lovely couple.
Wednesday................
I don't know what this means
@@burnbearscomedy Wednesday Addams Netflix series.
OOOOOHHHH hahaha yes of course. We thought you were some kind of blind prophet and were predicting we'd die on Wednesday. Our bad lmao
@@burnbearscomedy I think both of you will enjoy the show. Try the first one and go from there.
YOOO IF YOU ALL DO A ROLL20 GAME YOU WILL NEED ME TO PLAY. TRUST ME I AM INTEGRAL
Is this a version of the movie where she doesn't explicitly state she's a tiefling soon after meeting her?
Nah, we just definitely talked over it on first watch haha
Didnt u say you know D&D, and u didnt recognize a tiefling?
