My grandfather died in early 90's, when I was 3 yo. He worked as an engineer on the Antonov plant in Kyiv city, Ukraine. His job was design and layout of appliances in the cockpit. "Mriya" (in Ukrainian "The Dream") was a secret project, nobody was allowed to talk about it outside the plant, even with their families. Dad told me that one day Grandpa came from work with burning eyes and said they are going to build something absolutely stunning. These were the only words he was allowed to say to his wife and kids. And it was true. An-225 even in 2020 strikes people's imagination. Somewhere in the cockpit there is part of soul and hard work of my grandfather. Proud and grateful to my grandfather and other Ukrainian and Soviet engineers, designers and plant workers. R.I.P. Grandpa, your Dream still flies!

@zellis this plane was made by the whole country of the USSR, Ukraine just got it because it was developed there, the second one was almost ready for 90%, but Ukraine could not launch it because there were no spare parts for it in the world -they were only in Russia, Ukraine used the second plane as a donor for the first one, not when Ukraine did not he will launch the second plane since there are almost no spare parts in it and they will not be able to make them, even Boeing or Airbus will not be able to make such spare parts.

@ABANDONEDCHANNEL68 The AN-225 made its first flight on the 21st of December 1988 taking off from the factory aerodrome in Svyatoshyn. The airplane was flown by a crew headed by Oleksandr Galunenko. Mriya was developed for transportation of the Buran shuttle orbiter and components of the Energiya carrier rocket. The AN-225 was also expected to be used as a flying space launching site in the reusable aerospace transport system (MAKS) with the airplane making its first stage and a small-size space shuttle with a fuel tank - the second stage. Mriya can deliver extra-heavy oversize cargo to any point on the globe carrying it either inside the fuselage or on external stores. Two AN-225 airplanes were built. Construction of one of the aircraft was completed. Fuselage and tail unit were assembled at Antonov Kyiv Mechanical Works facility in Kyiv, while the wing center section and outer wing panels were assembled at Valerii Chkalov Tashkent Production Association in Tashkent. The wings and wing center sections were transported from Tashkent to Kyiv on the An-22 Antaeus (Antei)

There was actually a second plane being built before it got destroyed. It is only 65% done though, and some of the materials needed to make the plane, like the hydraulics, were manufactured in Russia. And the plane's old technology might not fit with new technology. But there are decent chances it will be rebuilt, but it will be tons of money and take a long time. Hopefully it will be rebuilt

Ukraine? "Antonov" is a Russian corporation from Novosibirsk (Russia, Siberia), which happened to be in Kiev for a while. Accordingly, all developments of the USSR Academy of Sciences belong to Russia. The AN-225 was built by order of NPO Molniya(Moscow). In Soviet times, the Ukrainian Antonov plant received all due payment for production and test flights. But after the collapse of the USSR, he forgot to transfer the aircraft to the customer. By law, the plane must belong to Russia. The wings and center section of the AN 225 were designed and manufactured (like the AN 124) at the Chkalov TAPO (Tashkent, Uzbek SSR): 70% of the workers are Russian-speaking, a multinational team, representatives of the Volga Republics of Russia(TATARSTAN, BASHKORTOSTAN, UDMURTIA, MORDOVIA, etc.) were sent to the Chkalov TAPO...
      So... Volga Russians:
*Real Russia/Provincial Russia,* Middle Volga river, Volga Federal District, Togliatti city ("Stavropol-on-Volga" until 1964) - population 685,619 people, ethnic composition: ethnic Russians 87%, Tatars 4%, Ukrainians 2%, Mordvins 1.5%, Chuvashes 1.5%. Other ethnic groups include ethnic Germans (Volga Germans), Poles, Jews and Koreans, who make up less than 0.5% of the total population. Municipal Gymnasium № 38, First School Day Ceremony 2024, Vocal Studio, song "Hello, School!"(Shkola, Privet), short clip
*-dVM3Gp18pg* PS: Russians with Tatar admixture...

The Experimental Design Bureau "Antonov" OKB-153 was established on May 31, 1946 by a decree of the Central Committee of the All-Union Communist Party of Bolsheviks and the Council of Ministers of the USSR at the Novosibirsk Aviation Plant named after V.P. Chkalov, Russia. Antonov Oleg Konstantinovich was appointed chief designer.
In the summer of 1952, the OKB, on Stalin's orders, was transferred to Kyiv with the entire staff.
It so happened historically that the communists of the USSR in 1922 allowed Ukraine to use the land of the Russian Empire with Russian factories located on it (this is the entire southeast of Ukraine). When leaving the USSR in 1991, Ukraine "forgot" to return to Russia its land with these plants (this is a huge territory of 2/3 of the entire territory of Ukraine) Study this question yourself.

Of course, the Antonov Design Bureau was Soviet.

Wings and feathering elements in Tashkent at the Ilyushin plant, avionics in Ulyanovsk and Voronezh. Landing gear titanium products in Nizhny Novgorod. Aerodynamics in TsAGI, the city of Zhukovsky, they were able to create a unique wing there. Engines in the city of Zaporozhye. And it was destroyed by the fire of the Ukrainian artillery, who tried to knock out Russian paratroopers from Gostomel. No one else will be able to create such an aircraft. By and large, it is not needed, it is very expensive.
