An-225 As A Passenger Plane - Does It Work?

- What would the Antonov AN-225 be like if it was a passenger plane? As in, we take the existing aircraft, slap in some seats, and start flying revenue flights? How many passengers could it fly and would it be a good experience? Let us get our hands dirty and get to work!
The Antonov AN-225 Myria is the world's most powerful cargo plane (well, one that can carry cargo inside the aircraft), and a feat of pure incredible, engineering. It was originally designed to carry the Soviet equivalent of the space shuttle, however, when that space plane program was shut down, all that remained was the plane.
Its features include an incredible carrying capacity of around 200 tonnes, more than any other aircraft, powered by six engines that make the Boeing 747 look like a small regional jet. The other aircraft lies incomplete and there is little justification to get it back to operational condition.
The AN-225 has a length of 84m or 275 feet. However, the cabin doesn't go the length of the plane, with instead the cabin only reaching 43.35 meters, or 142 feet.
Starting with an economy cabin, we know that the average economy seat is 18 inches wide, and 31 inches deep in pitch. If the cabin is 21 feet wide, or 252 inches, then we can fit in 14 seats across. But we know that the A380, with the same cabin, can only fit maximum 11 seats across due to the asiles and other features. As its the same width, we will assume the same restrictions with a configuration of 3-5-3.
So how many can we fit in the cabin? At 31 inches of seat pitch, and the cabin itself measuring 1704 inches long, thats 55 rows. But of course, we need doors, stairs, bathrooms, and more. pushing it down to around an abartariy 45 rows. That gives us a total economy capacity on the An-225 lower deck of around 495 passengers. Cosy.
Now lets have a look at the upper deck. As the plane actually curves inwards, there is not enough room for the same width of seats, reducing our cabin to around 9 seats across in a 3-3-3 configuration. Assuming the same length and rows, that would be an additional 405 passengers. For a total of 900 passengers onboard in all economy.
But lets add in some buisness class passengers so we can actually have some higher paying customers. An impressive business class seat of 80 inches deep, and 20 inches wide, would set us back to a row configuration of 2-2-2. At 80 inches deep, and the same length of the cabin, thats 21 seats. For a total of 84 passengers.
Combine that together and we have around 490 passengers, just under 500.
In an eariler exercise, I went as far as to use the ratio of passenger per cubic meter as with the A380, and had a lower answer of 255 people on the lower deck, and a further 189 on the upper deck. This gives a total of 444 total passengers across a three-class configuration.
The An-225 has an empty range of 15,400 km (9,600 mi, 8,300 nmi) with maximum fuel; or a range with 200 tonnes payload of 4,000 km (2,154 nautical miles).
As we know that the distance between two popular destinations, such as London to New York is 5571.55 km / 3008.39 nautical miles, and the distance between London and Dubai is 5471.77 km / 2954.52 nautical miles. So this plane will need to have a range of at least 3-4,000 nautical miles to be practical or a carrying capacity of 100 tonnes.
If the average passenger weighs 75kg, or 85kg if they are American, then we will have a total weight of 41,000 kg for 490 passengers. Plus luggage, which would be 20kg at least per passenger, so another 9,000 tonnes. that gets us up to 50 tonnes. We still have another 50 tonnes leftover, which would go to the seats, interior, deck, entertainment system, food, and more. We might be able to get even more out of the plane if we replaced its six engines with the latest GE9X engines from the 777X.
You might notice something else missing from our earlier cross-section... where does the baggage go? These designs don't accommodate any luggage at all, there is no cargo deck and no room to place any items outside of the cabin at all.
Also, we have to mention that the cargo cabin of the plane is utterly decompressed during flight so not only will the passengers be freezing cold, but they will also struggle to breathe. There also are no windows.
Lastly, this plane as a commercial carrier is essentially a total overdesign. The An-225 has a stronger structure to carry heavy items like a tank or a space shuttle. Passengers are far lighter and spread over a bigger area and thus its a different weight layout entirely. There is an arguement that the lower deck of our design could be cargo, and the upper deck passengers, but likely we would have seen an A380 converted before we do this to the AN-225.
But this plane would be a heck of a ride, and I think if you had the only commercial carrier in the world you might sell out every flight simply because of all the plane geeks willing to pay to flying on an ex-soviet space shutter carrier!

Now you really do wonder, what if Ryan air operated the A380 but there's no seats, just handle bars, 1000 max people onboard?
Probably more like 2000, don’t allow luggage so you can have people in the cargo hold and put children in the overhead bins!
I've been curious about this, what's with the meme behind Ryanair having bad services?
@@NaenaeGaming Why overhead bins, there is no luggage, more like a toddler sized continuous space, where crash cushions are each other.

I think the best case against turning it into a passenger plane is the case that there is a genuine need for it in the cargo world, but none in the passenger world.
And even the need in the cargo world is limited. After all, ALL of that need is covered for with a single aircraft, essentially used only when there is NO other option.
@@AdmiralTails It is not used because there is no other option, it is used because it's the cheapest option. The alternative of railway transport and shipping via sea always exists for all the cargo that plane has ever delivered, but those options are usually more costly then flying it in the cargo bay. The advantage is that you can carry a fully assembled, superheavy industrial machine in that aircraft to a destination in about a day worth of time. Using rail or shipping via sea means disassembling the units, packing everything into shipping containers and reassembling it onsite for delivery. For some industries that is much more expensive then chartering this aircraft. I don't know what the actual numbers and customers are for the aircraft, but I'd bet it's main purpose is in delivering high tech equipement from point a to point b from aerospace, semiconductor machinery to defense.
@@GermanTopGameTV you don’t have to put it in containers when on rail, Boeing 737 were transported on rail and no containers were there
@@devvydoesstuff still takes weeks to get where it needs to be and that alone costs lots of money.
@@AdmiralTails Cargo transport by air is faster than other methods. Because a cargo plane is designed to carry super heavy equipment like tanks. Chartering a flight to carry goods that are heavy is cheaper and saves time. You don't know what you're talking about
The thought of having a passenger plane as big as the AN-225 gives me chills. Airbus planned on releasing the A380-900 which would result in a 6.4 meter stretch over the current(soon to be retired) A380-800 and would've been able to carry up to 1,000 passengers if fitted with all economy seats as opposed to 853 seats. I waited so long for the release of the A380-900(originally planned for 2020) and I wanted to fly on it so badly when it did come out but it never did. Sure I'd like to fly in an AN-225 to get to know what it's like but it's considerably slower than the A380 so I'm not sure which plane I'd rather fly in more.
I wonder what will airbus name their future planes when they want a completely new design after A390, perhaps A400?
@@1mol831 The A400 already exists, it's a four engine military transport turboprop. They should use the A360 and A370 instead.
Yeah, but unfortunatelly, in our dystopian reality, 20 cocaine sniffing criminal-billionaires would create higher profit then remaining 980 peasants combined...
R.I.P An-225, gone too soon. I must once again ask the age old question posed by one Edwin Starr many years ago:

Also it makes tons of money for certain power groups (and sacking is still a thing, many banks have gold bars, museums have priceless items, etc)

You can still fly on a plane that carried an actually used in space space shuttle. The 747.
true
Not specifically the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft one
Before watching the video, I feel like the answer will be no. The A380 is pretty much proof of that. I remember somewhere on TH-cam a comment explained how airlines earn money, but I forgot where I saw it. Edit: also, the length needed to take off and land this plane would probably be way to long for certain airports. So I don't think it would be too viable. Would probably work in most international airports tho, which this plane would most likely serve in.
I'm really not surprised this wouldn't work. It would have probably cost too much to have such a major overhaul.
Also as a suggestion for a topic, could you do a video about the pe-2?
Well... the answer is really more that it works... but poorly
Pfffft.... they'd have to sell every seat every flight....
@@mayhemmike1789 they would have to oversell actually, and doing that in a huge plane isn't easy.
I want to give the airplane a big hug
It would take a lot of modifications, to make the Mriya a proper commercial plane but, DAMN would it be awesome to fly in such a plane.
The video quality is on point 👌, as per usual, and that song in the ending...
That's how you make an ending.
Looks like the airlines are not interested in too many extremely large aircraft. Two engined 777 is just right.
New version of Mria could work with modern 4 engines.
RIP AN-225. The true queen of the skies.
Just one word: Incredible!!!

I remember seeing the Antonov at the Farnborough Air Show a long time ago. It was much larger than a 747 and took longer as a consequence to take off. It was amazing to watch. I always wondered why a commercial passenger plane was not configured. Then off course the A380 came along,. I think with updating, pressurisation, windows and air for breathing it could be a fantastic aircraft. It would require big bucks though. Certainly the small size commercial aircraft can't continue if there are concerns about pollution. One large aircraft would cut out the need for so many smaller ones.
RIP Mirya 😭
"as we take the existing aircraft"
I got some bad news for you chief.
so yeah uh the live chat is a meme place rn and im in it
This is actually a good idea. Making it a combi plane is also good for airlines. Lower deck for cargo and upper deck for passengers.
The soviet AN-225 already have upper passenger deck
TH-cam is being extra cruel recommending this to us after the only one was destroyed in an airstrike.
Now we got a reason to end the another one
It doesn't meet the market demand. So, it's not possible. It's same as Airbus A380.
Whatever it's, Antonov AN 225 is an Engineering Marvelous.
Haha, I can't believe you incorporated that square cube joke into your video. nice one! :D
I created a fictional Antonov 850 after seeing the movie 2012, which has a fictional Antonov 500 (basically just an An-225).
My An-850 is the largest passenger jet on Earth, has two engines almost as big as the fuselage, a tail with four vertical stabilizers and two horizontal stabilizers, and has been used in my fanfiction works many times. If I'm being honest though, it's probably just the same size as, or a little bigger than, the An-225.
Nice to know there's another airframe. Hopefully the other airframe can be used to replace the destroyed Mriya
I heard Emirates is interested in ordering 500+ passenger AN-225s after this video
Great to recommend this now😢
Rest in Peace Antonov 225 ✌
bruh, imagine if the an-225 had those 6 HUGE GE9X engines xD
I guess just three 777 engines is necessary. I think A380 would have just 3 engines, four engines was a mistake.
Really would like to see that, and I'm sure that the AN-225 would need only four engines
The Antonov Design Bureau should think about that because the airplane could be more fuel efficient
@@memc0282

In addition to charging for oxygen, I'm sure Ryanair would make full use of that front cargo door by loading passengers through it for minimum turnaround times. And since it's already in their blue and yellow color scheme, they won't need to waste money on paint.
Your graphic designs are sooo gooood
Thank you so much 😀
Looks like a coincidence because Mustard made a video about An-225 like a week ago.
As anathema to the core concept of the video it might seem, I'd have taken the wing and tail section of the unfinished An-225 and developed a new passenger-optimized fuselage. You can afford to lighten the airframe since you're not carrying outsize/super-dense cargoes but that high-lift/wide-span wing is a must. The shoulder-mounted wing also lets you add a business class 'executive' section behind the cockpit, a bit like the 747, even if you don't go for the 2-deck layout.
Switching to the new GE engines _might_ let you drop the outboard pair to a 4-engine layout, but I'd keep the plumbing intact for the 'heavy lift' 6-jet cargo option.
Mirya was impressive due to it’s weight carrying capability. Many planes can carry the volume. 747 dreamlifter, beluga and their predecessors…
Antonov in 1991 had a project of a twin-engine wide-body passenger aircraft An-218, similar to the Airbas A330 or Boeing-767. Even a full size layout was created. The project was Soviet, joint with Russia. And in those years, Ilyushin had already agreed to produce the Il-96-400 with American engines. And the Antonov project was left without money and Russian partners.
It's such a shame it was recently destroyed in the Ukraine. It was truly an impressive accomplishment especially considering the time it was built
Don't miss us restoring it. 🇺🇦
@@Sanyokqq4 The moment I heard the horrible news I hoped it would be rebuilt

Mustard’s video last week and now it’s like a part 2 with extra speculation
RyanAir taking notes 📝
You are severely underrated.
7:34 GE9Xs are too big & heavy, but could definitely turn the entire plane into a trijet, which would offset it's center of gravity, hence you need to eigher make the nose heavier, stretching the fore section forward or moving the wings backwards.
So GEnx-2B of the 747-8 series or Trent 7000 (Trent 1000 of the 787 but with bleed air) of the A330neo could do the job better. Mind you, though, the Progress D-18 of the An-124 & An-225 is comparable to the GE CF6, PW4000 or RB211 engines of the 747-400, so re-engining them with GEnx-2B of the 747-8 (The GEnx-1B variant powers the 787) makes more sense.
I love reading the most smartest stuff ever coming from a roblox avatar
1300 cubic metres! 1300 metres cube is 1300x1300x1300. The Antonov is big.... but not that big! Another tip-top video. Hail Nick!

Hey! Found im very interested about the latvian plane program called "VEF I- sieries" Can you please make a video about it? Because Latvia had one of the best early plane manufacturers but theres none today sadly.
Large (spacious) slowflying pax aircraft should be built. With 4 GE-9X engines, the MTOW can be 840 tonnes - which could be split 38% OEW (320 tonnes) with 520 tonnes for payload and fuel - these could each range from 200 tonnes to 320 tonnes. We would be looking at a 60 metre long cabin, 7 metres high, and a max of 11 metres wide with a 'hexagonal' cross section. The aim is to carry a 777 hull or 4 F-35 fighters, or heavy industrial plant of great value. The aim would be to build a fleet for bulk cargo - military and civilian uses.

The AN225 was most profitable as a mover of outsize cargo, but in between these jobs, you could turn it into a makeshift passenger plane by filling the hold with 5 standard passenger coaches and seating your passengers inside, this would give you a passenger capacity of about 225 (45 per coach).
