OMG..this video was just recommended to me via a FB group post. I made 4 memorial glass blocks and I ended up using a total of 5 feet of vinyl due to all my weeding mishaps. I have been so frustrated for two days. If only I had known about this technique. Thank you so much!!!!
THISSSSS. see this is the video I've been needing. I was so confused as to why reverse would be better sometimes. (I'm new to the cricut world and just soaking in all the knowledge before I tackle major projects)
...Wow I can't believe that this video was made 6 years ago...This has been the best explanation of reverse weeding that I've seen. Thanks! Now it makes sense
This method is a god send, I had problems with a past design and tried it and it worked. I just tried another design and had forgotten about this method. After 6 unsuccesful attempts at weeding, I remembered this and it worked 1st time.
For the life of me, I couldn't figure out how this would be easier than regular weeding,,,,,,but you always have the best videos, and I can definitely see how this would be for anything with lots of little details,,,ty so much! I'm going to try this next project!
You just showed us not only had to reverse weed, but how to reverse weed more than a word or two. I am in the process of giving this my first try and feel a bit confident after viewing your video! Thanks :)
OMG i have wasted so much vinyl trying to cut and weed a recipe to put on a cutting board! I am trying this now - I will let you know how it works out!
thank you for the info. I have the design cut out, it took 3 times...lol, the weeding is what is giving me the trouble...so before I 'Weed', I will use your tip, and I will let you know how it goes...Keep the 'Vinyl' video's coming...
That would be a great reason to do it. Anything that has a lot of little pieces you are worried about staying on the backing while you are removing all the other pieces.
Great idea love it ,,,,i love the paper transfer tape I had to get some works great ...but I have a question what the name of the knife thing y'all use I want to get one thanks Jessica have a great day
God bless you for making it simple and explaining why and not giving us a bunch of bs along withit. Simple and to the point but very informative at the same time! Thank you!!!
Love this tip. I am going to be using it. One question? Can you weed the letters off and use it like a stencil to paint? Instead of using the vinyl directly on the the project? I so need help having to many problems
Hi Maria, yes, you can use the vinyl as a stencil as well. It would be the same concept as this one instead, weed out the small letters and then apply it to your board. Once you have painted in the stencil then you would just remove the vinyl. Here is another video we did on stenciling - th-cam.com/video/dGspTIPWtOI/w-d-xo.html
If the heat transfer vinyl you are using comes with a clear carrier sheet on top of the vinyl, the carrier sheet will act as the heat transfer tape and the vinyl will be weeded off of the carrier sheet just as you would when reverse weeding the adhesive. Some heat transfer vinyl may not come with a clear carrier sheet on top of the vinyl.
I want to try this, but I am wanting to keep both parts of the vinyl, the weeded part, and the not weeded part. That way I have two separate images. I am guessing I would need contact paper on both sides?
I was going to ask the same thing, but I figured the answer would be that! Too bad I didn't think to use this method the other day with the Daleks I made. Oh lort!
Hi, this one is in the Silhouette Store. If you are using a Cricut, you can find them on Etsy. Just search rhinestone template and you will find different images that you can import into Design Space.
Hi, if you're doing the reverse weeding like this and then are not going to be using them, just place the backing sheet that you peeled off of it from the beginning back on. That will protect it. Then just store it in a flat area and it will be great to use later. Let us know if you have any additional questions. www.expressionsvinyl.com
I used the Glitter vinyl in blue. expressionsvinyl.com/adhesive/glitter-vinyl/ultra-glitter-vinyl-sheets.html along with our paper transfer tape. expressionsvinyl.com/transfer-tape/transfer-tape-rolls.html
The awesome thing about Siser HTV (the only brand we sell) is the built in carrier sheet. It acts as a transfer tape, so if you were to do this design in HTV you would flip your image, cut and then weed it out just the same as we did after we put on the transfer tape.
Hi Adam, yes you can. It is a great idea to save that backing sheet to apply it later and to also help while applying it. Please let us know if you have any additional questions.
Will this work with HTV? I can’t wrap my head around it b/c the “good” side of HTV is against the Carrier Sheet - so the “glue” side is up and would then be against the Transfer Sheet - help. Thanks
Hi Cyn. With HTV you do not need to use an additional transfer sheet. Most Heat Transfer (all the types that we carry) have a clear carrier sheet. When you cut your image you place that shiny side with the carrier sheet down and cut on the back side. Since you are cutting it this way you need to reverse your image. You do not want to cut through the carrier sheet. That is what holds the vinyl in place. Once you have weeded everything out simply place your vinyl on to your shirt with the clear carrier sheet up. You are now ready to iron it on to your shirt. You don't need to add any additional transfer sheets to it. Please let us know if you have any additional questions. Also, here are a couple of additional videos that you may find helpful - HTV Basics - th-cam.com/video/YaqKLGIIwFE/w-d-xo.html Siser EasyWeed HTV Basics - th-cam.com/video/0QuIQeCvQ0Q/w-d-xo.html Expressions Vinyl Website - expressionsvinyl.com/heat-transfer-vinyl/
Expressions Vinyl Thanks for reply. My question was how to apply your Reverse weeding technique using HTV but I have since figured it out. Some days the ol grey cells are dense and slow. Lol. Thanks again!
Hi, Very new to all this, I am having problems weeding very small letters )under half inch) of a design.I don't know if it's the cutter, the vinyl, my technique etc. Almost at point I want to give up, but I don't want to just yet. Someone at an online vinyl supply store said problem is probably that I have a stepper motor machine. 90 percent of lettering come up but lose a few pieces when weeding. Tried 6 times and failed each time. This method should work?
Hi Joe, Yes this method will help. Sometimes smaller designs are just too small. If you get your cut settings just right it will be easy to weed. You want to just cut through the vinyl, not the backing. This method does work well with small letters. I also think you will find weeding and cutting heat transfer vinyl(for shirts) is a bit easier than adhesive vinyl.
Thank you for reply. I decided to try and tried it about 3 times like in your video after I wrote here ,but it still didn't work. :-( . If you know what I mean by TOP SECRET folder type of font , or if you Googled TOP SECRET font. That is what I am trying to use and the "N" I keep loosing the verticle lines. I think I might try to make them just a bit thicker and see what happens..If that doesn't work then I am stumped. Also what is the best product to use to make those little car window decals that are so popular? That is actually what the application is as well as putting same design on t shirts . I tried Oracal 641, 651 and I think another 6?? number. Thanks again.
Hi Robert, You want to make sure your vinyl is under the white rollers. It also sounds like you need to lighten up on your blade depth and possibly thickness depth.
Have you ever heard of reverse cleaning an image, cause I can't find anyone who has and I have an image that is really hard to clean and my sister said she did it great doing reverse cleaning. someone said maybe it was this reverse weeding but it is not. any help would be greatly appreciated.
Hi, no, if you are using adhesive vinyl you will not need to reverse the image to cut. You simply apply the transfer tape before you start to weed it. Then turn it over and remove the backing and start to weed. Hopefully this helps.
Hi, this was a design that we found on Etsy. Once we had the design we imported it into the program we use for our machine. If you use a Silhouette then it would be Silhouette Studio. If you are using a Cricut then you'd use Design Space. Once set up in the program you can send it to your machine to cut. Please let us know if you have any additional questions. We'd be happy to assist you.
Not that I can think of off the top of my head. Some people love this method, while others don't so test it out with a smaller project and see if you like it :)
Sherina, I'm sorry to hear that. What kind and brand of vinyl are you using. I've heard a lot of people having issues with the cricut brand glitter vinyl. It usually comes with some strong transfer tape that works with it.
I just tried reverse weeding today and it's a lifesaver. Is it ok to touch the sticky part if the vinyl. With that affect it's ability to stick to your project?
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! After a long frustrating day with a Thin Blue Line American flag... YOU saved my Cameo from a sledge hammer lol. Those stars!!! OMG!
Mind blown.....I wish I had seen this last week when I killed several projects from the frustration of the pieces not staying put!
It comes in so handy!
OMG..this video was just recommended to me via a FB group post. I made 4 memorial glass blocks and I ended up using a total of 5 feet of vinyl due to all my weeding mishaps. I have been so frustrated for two days. If only I had known about this technique. Thank you so much!!!!

We're so glad to hear that it finally worked for you.
I had heard the term "Reverse weeding" but had no idea what it was. Thanks for the video!!!
For the life of me, I couldn't figure out how this would be easier than regular weeding,,,,,,but you always have the best videos, and I can definitely see how this would be for anything with lots of little details,,,ty so much! I'm going to try this next project!
You explain things so well! Love these informative short videos! Thank you.
Thank you so much!
Jessica, this is absolutely BRILLIANT! Thank you! I am such a Silhouette newbie, I am SO grateful for all your videos.
@queenopearls You are so sweet! You are going to have so much fun with your Silhouette. Hope you have a great day!!
You just showed us not only had to reverse weed, but how to reverse weed more than a word or two. I am in the process of giving this my first try and feel a bit confident after viewing your video! Thanks :)
Lots of dots missing but thanks for the video
I noticed that too, but OMG so much better than the other way.
TJ Duprey how can you tell without seeing the original design?
Great tip! I've learned so much from your videos!
Oh my goodness, I'd never heard of this b/f!!! Thank you sooooo much for this tip!
Very to the point. Thank you!
OMG i have wasted so much vinyl trying to cut and weed a recipe to put on a cutting board! I am trying this now - I will let you know how it works out!
Yay! Yes, let us know how it goes for you. I hope you find it much easier. :)
That's a pretty cool idea - ty for sharing!
Great video. Do you need to mirror image words with this method?
You do not need to mirror your image for this method. :)
thank you for the info. I have the design cut out, it took 3 times...lol, the weeding is what is giving me the trouble...so before I 'Weed', I will use your tip, and I will let you know how it goes...Keep the 'Vinyl' video's coming...
Yes, please let us know how it works for you.
Excellent tutorial!
Thank you so much for this video! I'm going to try it out now.
What would I do a reverse weeding for a photo SVG? Like for a memorial ornament?
That would be a great reason to do it. Anything that has a lot of little pieces you are worried about staying on the backing while you are removing all the other pieces.
you don't know how many swear words you just saved me from continuing to say with this trick lol
Haha!! Seriously right! Its a life saver!
Me too! I just wasted so many vinyls on this particular project! Mind blown!
Thank you for this video..very informative!
Great idea love it ,,,,i love the paper transfer tape I had to get some works great ...but I have a question what the name of the knife thing y'all use I want to get one thanks Jessica have a great day
The knife is a Stanley Fat Max, you can find it on Amazon
God bless you for making it simple and explaining why and not giving us a bunch of bs along withit. Simple and to the point but very informative at the same time! Thank you!!!
This was very helpful
what is the cutting tool you are using...I have a couple cutting knives but love watching you use that with ease
This one is a folding utility knife from the hardware store. It is a Fatmax by Stanley.
Good thing to know, Thanks!
mind blown!
where did you get the svg file at i really like it
awesome...looks great...
Love this tip. I am going to be using it. One question? Can you weed the letters off and use it like a stencil to paint? Instead of using the vinyl directly on the the project? I so need help having to many problems

Is it possible to do the same for intricate designs that need to be placed on shirts?
If the heat transfer vinyl you are using comes with a clear carrier sheet on top of the vinyl, the carrier sheet will act as the heat transfer tape and the vinyl will be weeded off of the carrier sheet just as you would when reverse weeding the adhesive. Some heat transfer vinyl may not come with a clear carrier sheet on top of the vinyl.
thank you cant wait to try this! i bought from your store the medium stickiness transfer tape will that work with reverse weeding?
Awesome! The paper transfer tape works the best for me.
I want to try this, but I am wanting to keep both parts of the vinyl, the weeded part, and the not weeded part. That way I have two separate images. I am guessing I would need contact paper on both sides?
It would depend on the image, you can try it to see if you are able to get it to work the way you are wanting it to.
Great Tutorial, quick question though. Is that a pan that'll be used for cooking? Wouldn't it burn the vinyl?
No I would not use this for cooking. It is from Hobby Lobby meant for use as a decoration.
I was going to ask the same thing, but I figured the answer would be that! Too bad I didn't think to use this method the other day with the Daleks I made. Oh lort!
Hola where you get design for rhinestone image? Thanks. Love your videos, so easy
Hi, this one is in the Silhouette Store. If you are using a Cricut, you can find them on Etsy. Just search rhinestone template and you will find different images that you can import into Design Space.
that's brilliant but why does it work ?
Game changer!!!!
Can you reverse weed if you’re doing a layered project?! Making a car decal in 3 layers and I’m so confused!
I believe you could, but the bottom layer would have to be exposed in order to layer on top of it
Great info. New sub today.
If i do this for Car decals that aren't going to be used immediately, how would you recommend I store them for future use?
Hi, if you're doing the reverse weeding like this and then are not going to be using them, just place the backing sheet that you peeled off of it from the beginning back on. That will protect it. Then just store it in a flat area and it will be great to use later.

what vinyl paper is that! i love it!
I used the Glitter vinyl in blue. expressionsvinyl.com/adhesive/glitter-vinyl/ultra-glitter-vinyl-sheets.html along with our paper transfer tape. expressionsvinyl.com/transfer-tape/transfer-tape-rolls.html
can the pan be used to cook? or some spraying is needed beforehand?
Shelly, This would just be used for decoration. This was a serving tray, not for cooking.
Is there a way to do this with HTV to avoid taking forever to weed intricate designs?? Thanks!
The awesome thing about Siser HTV (the only brand we sell) is the built in carrier sheet. It acts as a transfer tape, so if you were to do this design in HTV you would flip your image, cut and then weed it out just the same as we did after we put on the transfer tape.

hello ,
I can't get my cameo to cut my vinyl it's cutting thru and moving around what do you think I'm doing wrong?
Hi Robert, You want to make sure your vinyl is under the white rollers. It also sounds like you need to lighten up on your blade depth and possibly thickness depth.
You just made my life so much easier!!
We're glad it helped!
Did you mirror the image for this??
mirroring the image is not required! :)
Have you ever heard of reverse cleaning an image, cause I can't find anyone who has and I have an image that is really hard to clean and my sister said she did it great doing reverse cleaning. someone said maybe it was this reverse weeding but it is not. any help would be greatly appreciated.
We are unsure what reverse cleaning is, she does weed the smaller images out differently in this video th-cam.com/video/K6L5n6szmWI/w-d-xo.html
Thank you!
I'm new to this and have wasted a few pieces too many of vinyl trying to weed an intricate design!! Many cuss words have been said today!
Oh no! Have you tried this way?
If I wanted to etch a pattern like this, I wouldn't want to do reverse weeding, right?
You could still use this technique, you need to make sure what you are weeding out is what you want it to be etched.
Thank you
Oh. My. Goodness!! You saved me! Great video :)
YAY!!! That is great to hear! Good luck with your project, I hope it is smooth sailing from here on out. :)
So if you want to reverse weed do you have to mirror cut?
Hi, no, if you are using adhesive vinyl you will not need to reverse the image to cut. You simply apply the transfer tape before you start to weed it. Then turn it over and remove the backing and start to weed. Hopefully this helps.

Can this be done on htv?
No, this process only works with adhesive vinyl.
which tape and where did you get it
Hi, we used the paper transfer tape and we carry it on our website - expressionsvinyl.com/transfer-tape/paper/
Awesome
Is there any kind of project that this is NOT a good idea?
Not that I can think of off the top of my head. Some people love this method, while others don't so test it out with a smaller project and see if you like it :)
awesome
I must be doing something wrong. My design keeps coming off when I pull the vinyl away. It doesn’t stay like how you demonstrated. Frustrated!
use a good transfer tape
just tried this didn't work for me at all , the paper got stuck on the black vinyl and it pulled letters off ..
Crafty Mum78 me too! We both must be doing wrong.
my vinyl isn't sticking to my transfer tape and i have tried 4 different brands of tape helppppppp please
Heather, You should really try not to touch it but sometimes that is impossible. Try to not have lotion on when touching it, that will help.
OMG why haven't I been doing this 🤣
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! After a long frustrating day with a Thin Blue Line American flag... YOU saved my Cameo from a sledge hammer lol. Those stars!!! OMG!
Lol!! Glad we could help! Those tiny cuts can make us want to rip our hair out. The next time you will be crafting happily! :)

Please let folks know that vinyl is not food safe and the completed dish should not be used to hold food.
Great tip but Jesus Christ was this video messy! This lady struggled lol should have used a smaller example!
