Caruso's Kelly was the soul of the show and Franz's Sipowicz was the heart. For 26 brilliant episodes it was one of the best television shows in history. Every single episode was superb. Caruso was from Queens. He knew guys like this. And he didn't play him sentimentally. I don't care what anyone says, the show was never as good without him. Smits was fine, but colorless compared to Caruso. And the show resorted to Andy's son and Sylvia being killed and became overly sentimental in its closing seasons. Season 1 and the first four episodes of Season 2 was the pinnacle of "NYPD Blue." Real, true, and brilliant.
Extremely well said......here are my top 5 ever nypd blue in no particular order. Sipowitz, fancy, Simone, Rodriguez, Baldwin blk detective Last one is tough as connie is up there ...baldwin definately. Caruso was short lived and a hated by many off camera.
Stand up guy to be that honest at a time when he is mentally in The Eye of an emotional hurricane. And the way She handled what was pretty much dropped in front of her was very Classy. REAL Love shown in a REEL situation still hits home whether we are involved or just watching. Most of us are going to feel this within ourselves. Top Notch Acting All Around. Cheers From Ohio

People rarely mention this, but if you look at caruso he lost weight and looks somewhat sickly. From one of the commentaries I heard on this 4 episode arc, the stress he got from the press and public took a toll on him. Interesting he has never said anything about this publicly other than, he was wrong for how he handled the success. But im sorry how he turned this chick down for Amy didn't make sense to me. I understand love and loyalty to Amy's character but the storyline with him and Robin was quite believable as well if he stayed with her.
