I love visiting these types of videos and going on a nostalgic trip with old school Maplers. I'd give anything to relive those mid 2000's with you all, for even a single day.
you preserving all this information via iceberg makes me really happy. i’ve been here since the game came out and i come back to it periodically but nothing compares to playing pre big bang as a kid. the nostalgia is powerful. i really appreciate the time and effort you put into this video. maple will always hold a special place in my heart
you said it best buddy! Exactly how i feel! it doesnt compare to how it used to be
Pre-BigBang was literally the best. I remember getting on with my guild and just doing PQs all the time.
There are private servers that are pre-bigbang versions that are worth checking out if you're feeling nostalgic!
i get nervous with those cant nexon come after you big time for it?
@@laszlomezei3193
@@laszlomezei3193 Yeah I'm on a pre-BB server right now. Yeou is pretty good for what I'm looking for, just wish Nexon would get their head out of their asses and capitalize on what the people obviously want
Can't believe GMS is almost 20 years old. I remember my brother introduced this game to me when I was 6 years old. I'm now 24 😮
I had a buddy on Bera named Sang and another with the Ign Babyyzak. your name just brought me back to a time long long ago. That was a nice memory, thank you.
Yea, same back in the day when i was a kid i loved the cool dmg numbers :D
Same!
I found this game back when computers were square boxes lol I was 10 years old then. I'm 31 now.
I miss the golden days of maplestory.
Bro I literally am the same age and started at the same age. Sadly stopped playing because the game is just a giant whale farm now
Personally, Maple introduced me to the MMV scene (Maple Music Videos) where a lot of creators back then would go from screenshots copy pasting lyrics to eventually banned story sprite animations lip syncing. All of this experience eventually got me interested enough to enroll into film school and now I'm part of the industry within post production.
So thanks Maple (but I'm pretty sure the amount of NX I spent could have helped pay a bit of my tuition...).
Maple Kombat
Really glad you went for it. I also made my fair share when I was younger and also dreamt of becoming an animator, but I am now a depressed accountant
@@TyeCozMusicI love the maple kombat series
The most memorable mmv for me was this one done for Numb by Linkin Park.
Hey, how are you pulling through mate?@@anonomyss
1:24:00 - Hello. I'm Fiel, the creator of Southperry. I wanted to talk briefly about the borked exp tables.
The exp tables being borked really did happen, but only in one specific area. That would be Singapore. This bug was fixed in GMS 0.94 (you can find the extraction thread on southperry).
The issue occurred near Big Bang where not only were the exp tables changed, but also the amount of exp mobs give was also changed. KMS did the update for all the exp/mob tables. However, there was also the issue of region locked content (Masteria, Singapore, etc.) which generally had more favorable exp/hp ratios to encourage players from those regions to play that region's exclusive content. So when Big Bang rolled around, the server side patch updated all the areas KMS had but did not automatically update region specific areas.
This caused Singapore, which was in GMS at the time (and Masteria was also coming to MSEA), to not get updated with new exp rates which made everything in Singapore wildly favorable to train at.
I remember this! Right after the big bang patch I heard through word of mouth that Truckers had insanely good EXP and would probably be nerfed soon. For a week straight every channel had a party training there, right up until it finally got patched.
Thanks for making an awesome website
welcome@@backtre8776
@@ArborealTiger You just gave me some crazy deja vu with that, I so vividly remember getting insane exp in the singapore area from mobs right after BB and I never knew why. Makes complete sense now though.
I have quite a few thoughts on this video, this is going to be a long read:
- Regarding the NxProse section, I was quite disappointed since I expected some actual in-depth coverage of his history. For clarification, he was NOT a community manager, but was the producer / Game Designer for Nexon America from late 2006 to mid 2009. He was the primary visionary behind the original lore of Amoria and Masteria, consisting of New Leaf City, the original Haunted House storyline with Sophilia, the Crimsonwood area, and Crimsonwood Keep Party Quest. There were also a decent number of interviews with him where he was asked what was next in store for Masteria. However, since he left Nexon mid 2009 (shortly after the release of Crimsonwood Keep PQ), most of his ideas for Masteria were put to the wayside in favor of less-than-popular ideas, such as the Haunted House storyline with Olivia, the NLC Invaded storyline with aliens, the Masteria Through Time blockbuster, and the 2019/2020 Masteria revamp which has been widely despised.
I actually contacted him via LinkedIn to inquire about what his original plans for Masteria were, and he provided he a lot of information on his plans, as well as the insight that he did leave some notes on where to continue, but Nexon never used them for whatever reason. You referenced it at 39:28, and I figured you at least saw it since it's one of the first results you'd see when Googling "NxProse". Fun fact: the mayor of NLC, Icebyrd Slimm, was based off his likeness and references his real name.
- Regarding the Jett/Zen section, just a few corrections:
1. Zen wasn't based off the Dragon Warrior, but rather he *is* Dragon Warrior; Zen was merely the MSEA name for him. In other words, there was no third "Dragon Warrior" class.
2. Jett and Zen were always the same class functionally, with the only difference between them being the theme and skill skins; Jett had an alien bounty hunter theme while Zen had a martial arts theme.
- Regarding the Showa Town censorship section, it's nice that you integrated Leaf Archives's video in yours, but you could at least credit him for it. Same with most of the other footage throughout the video.
- Regarding the Recycling Content section, it's a bit of a nebulous topic but my assumption would be KoreaMS's tendency to recycle content from overseas regions and repurpose it in their own way. They haven't been doing this as often as of late, but a few examples I can think of would be as follows:
-- Neo City, the area near Leafre, was recycled from Zipangu's Neo Tokyo
-- Kerning Square's original incarnation was recycled from Taiwan's Night Market and Taipei 101 areas
-- Golden Temple was recycled from the Thailand world tour region of the same name
-- Ludibrium's Fantasy Theme World was recycled from Malaysia's Fantasy Theme Park
-- Tynerum's Crimsonheart Castle was recycled from Masteria's Crimsonwood area
-- Gold Beach's black slime monsters were recycled from Singapore and Malaysia
-- The most recent one: Ramuramu Valley, the area where we fight Guardian Angel Slime, was recycled from the Goo Island event in non-KMS regions
- Regarding the Battle Mage Revamp section, the reason you couldn't find a ton of information on it is probably because you had the wrong version number: KMST v1.2.177 instead of v1.2.477. A couple of the Battle Mage revamp videos made this mistake as well which is likely what led to the error, but searching "KMST Battle Mage Revamp" on TH-cam does give the correct version of 477. In addition, Southperry and Orange Mushroom both had posts covering the revamp in greater detail.
- Regarding the Havoc in Fox Valley section, another correction: the unused NPC was never named "Havoc", but merely as "???" with the description of "Darmoor's Disciple". This NPC was a hooded figure covered in robes and surrounded by a red aura. This was a different translation from KMS, who gave him the description "Darmoor's Apostle"; Nexon America hadn't decided on how they wanted to localize "Apostle" as at the time, which is why they went with "Disciple", but they settled on "Apostle" with the release of Cernium. The Havoc connection comes from the Fox Valley storyline involving a heavy thunderstorm almost destroying the Fox Point Village. and many players speculate that he was the culprit behind the events of the story given his powers of lightning. Currently, there is no explicit confirmation, even with the release of Shangri-La part 2 in KMS.
- Personally, I'd put the RNG Rigging Controversy at Level 2 instead of Level 5, since it was common knowledge and Nexon issued massive compensation because of it.
Side notes:
- 21:32 GMS did receive an updated UI, but it was not the one shown at 21:32; as far as I remember no version actually received that UI. The one we did receive was mainly for Item inventory, Equipment inventory, Character stats, and the Skill UI. A couple years later it was replaced with the UI that KMS had. However, Beast Tamer still has the old UI pop-up when adding multiple skill points to a specific skill, which is different from every other class.
- Regarding the Hard Magnus Hacker Trap section, your editor was one year off at 1:14:47, and you were correct about it being 2012.
- Regarding the Ecko section, the main reason the GM account was hacked is because the account's credentials accidentally were leaked in a Nexon banner (the same banners that appear on top of the screen when Nexon announces an in-game maintenance or a Double Miracle Time). Ecko pin-cracked the GM account not long after which led to the infamous account hacking.
- 1:20:31 the Hard Lucid solo is actually from TaiwanMS, not ChinaMS.
- 1:44:11 the placeholder icons are still used in the data for sure.
- 1:44:24 you mentioned not having any footage of any weather effects, but one of them - the snow effect - appears later in the video at 1:46:27.
Holy cow nice insights! I've been playing on and off since GMS first released and didn't know any of the lore you just provided. Fascinating!
@@briskioO I used Southperry a lot back in its heyday, and being the former curator of the Maple Wiki definitely helped.
This is a very nice comment!
I enjoy reading comments by other maplers who know what they are talking about. Although I experienced the game very early on when it first came out, it wasn't consistent to the point where I could have picked out any of this info. You should be making videos and talking about what you know! It would be cool to see footage if there is any as well.
@@hasterytaste5281 I don't plan to make any videos on it unfortunately due to time and lack of interest, but thanks.
tbh i thought you were going to go a little deeper about Bannedstory. all the maplestory fan series and MMVs. as a kid waiting for the newest episode of Maple Kombat, Scarlet Wings and lots of romance series was quite a highlight whenever a new episode got posted. even tried making a few animations back then. Bannedstory honestly contributed a lot in the mapelstory community during its peak.
i skimmed thru this vid just to look for the stuff u were talking about but im happy to see ur comment bro
maybe im just being nostalgic but to this day, i wanna believe nexon has taken alot of inspiration from the numerous spriters and animators from the maple forums all those years ago. i remember learning the word "elitist", hating on dray86 for using adobe premier (lmao), giving CnC to noob animators, getting flamed by ppl, the animator vs wall collab and numerous other fun things we did as a community man.
gonna hijack ur comment here and shoutout BSBG, maplemation, maplecustoms, and all the homies that were on there, including the YTers. i love u all and miss everyone one of u that i talked to
-ryo
Bannedstory let me live out my dreams of having a cool character on GMS as a kid since we were pretty poor growing up and couldn't afford NX lol..
I would use it to make a cute character for my banners on private server forums 😁
And a lot of MMVs actually went to TH-cam front page too back in the day. It’s such an underrated part to maplestory’s history. Spawned a whole creative community
@@anotherharu The flash animation and MMV scene was quite big, but these days you also dont hear much about WoW music videos or the like, that culture and content was really a product of its era when MTV was huge. Dont cry because its over, smile because it happened.
yeah i remember this era, what a wild ride
The layer regarding adjusted exp tables is referring to Truckers immediately after the Big Bang update in GMS. Truckers were in the Singapore region and used to be like level 45 monsters. After Big Bang they were leveled down to mid 20s but kept their old exp and became super efficient to train at until level 50 if not longer.
IIRC it was CPQ->Trucks->Scarecrows->Jesters->MP2/3
EDIT: I put CPQ on accident for the last part. It was called Mysterious Path by the ghost ship
Ah... I'm getting nostalgia from that entire area.
truckers were goated
I miss those old Singapore maps. Such good mobs to train on.
I remember absolutely tearing up Truckers with my Dual Blader back then. So. Much. Flying Assaulter.
Thinking about things that maybe could’ve been in those upper levels:
• The entire explosive social culture! Maplestory memes, MMVs, myspace, ads, so much
• The iTCG! The cardgame slapped and I kinda would love to see a modern successor
• The use of the character “@“ spammed because of its size
• Deeper dive in how people reacted to smaller things like amoria and new leaf city
• Maplestory anime
iTCG being the primary way to get stormcasters and all the other super cool stuff back in the day. so fun.
@@@@ @@@@ @@@@ @@@@ @@@@ @@@@@@@ @@@@@ @@@@ @@@ @ Has no idea what you mean ;)
Omg yes!
Also would've loved to see when Maplestory was featured on Fox news. I rewatched that news segment dozens of times as a kid because of how bizarre it was to see Maple on TV
There was also bug for sometime where you opened world map and searched piano room and when you clicked it it just crashed the game xd
It is wild how much nostalgia I have for a few years of GMS following launch. When I think of Maple Story I still picture things from back when you'd need to roll to get the exact right stats on the creation screen and the higher level job advancements were rumors and marks of beta were a fairly regular sight to see. Crazy how with so much less content the game felt so much bigger than the times i have briefly returned to it.
As a returning player, I really enjoyed watching a bit of Maplestory history that I did not get to experience or know about. Thank you!
Get out while you can lol. All you'll find in Maplestory is misery now.
@@animalhouse8849 Yeah I had 18 characters all lvl 150+ just to get the stupid Legion power B.S., then quite for a long while. I recently came back and just stared at my character screen. Quit on the spot. Why can't we just be allowed to focus on ONE character if we want?
fun fact about the maplestory song in the last entry of the iceberg. This soundtrack is used in the KMS version of the game when the two twin mushrooms sing on the mushking storyline. When I came across it for the first time it blew my mind.
It looks like it was disabled for GMS Release though
been playing this game for 17 years on and off and im so glad someone made something thorough like this.
havent finished the entire video yet but if this video mentions anything about ECKO/CAPCOM gm hacking incident then it is for sure very well developed and researched because those are some deep old events. probably other taboo maplestory iceberg topics that arent genuinely well known would be BT trainer days , ravens and stonetooths being hacked and sold via MTS / paypal as well, and familiar hacking with LHC party leeching meta. also iceberg worthy is when FOX news did a segment on maplestory and buying NX. Love it when people arent afraid to explore and highlight taboo themes of this old game. miss Scania.
I started playing in 2003 when it first came out. I was 7 at the time. I was obsessed with that game and I’m happy that I made a lot of friends on this game. I can’t believe that much time has passed. This will always be my favorite game. Thank you for taking us all down memory lane ☺️
The reason why PVP was not available anymore wasn't because of class balances, but rather EXP exploits. Players can simply use this as a training ground and "swap" around hitting targets amongst themselves so each player can just earn EXP instead of playing actual PVP. I had one friend in particular, she had multiple computers, where she simply used her main and have as many "target mules" walk to a corner so her main can simply spam skills and wait for the mules to respawn and walk back to the corner until time's up.
I've been thinking about old maplestory lately. I played a number of private servers over the years that helped recapture a lot of the nostalgia, but it doesn't feel as social anymore on those. I remember how intense the grind was, and yet I had so much fun making friends and even if I was only level 4x and 7x on my characters after multiple years it was such a great adventure. I joined when there was only Scania and Bera. I picked Bera because it was less populated. (Pre-big bang) I tried MS a few years ago again, getting characters to level 200 on Reboot was weird and unsatisfying. I actually thought the first few classes in big bang were cool like Battle Mage, Wild Hunter. It's not that the game completely went downhill at that point, Extalia was a fun PS, too.
I had no patience for Kerning PQ, it was never worth how often you had to wait. I did some, as well as Ludi PQ which was easier to get in to. The Ludi update was peak MS for me, exploring that vast region and levelling up through the silly quests.
I lost items through a drop game scam when a guy turned his item vac on. Lesson learned, greed got to me when he was dropping his ilbis and picking them right back up. I gave away all the mesos I made through years of merching to my friend "Mint" when I quit for real. Hundreds of millions of mesos. I have no idea what Mint is doing these days or where to find him, same goes for all my friends in that game. In high school I would play with some of my Korean friends when I rejoined, briefly. That was really fun, too.
Someone convinced me to remake my first character, a level 32 Spearman, because he had 6 luk and 7 int. I wish I had not done so, it was not worth it and took weeks to get back...I remade my level 42 assassin when dexless sins became the thing, too. Similar issue.
Being a teenager and growing up with the game during some of the toughest years of my development gave me so much escapism. When social issues dominated my school week, on the weekend I could delve into MS and it all melted away. Was it totally healthy? Maybe not, but I also had to learn about addiction and willpower with how obsessed I became about the game. The only thing that could overpower my love for this game was IRL teenage puppy love. When I had girlfriends I would quit the game. When we'd break up, I'd come right back.
I too played Extalia! Omg Extalia, the drama, the sequels, the friends. Was that the one where you could spam the crap out of your super attack, or right before? I think a part of the reason the ps pop has suffered is because there's always been...Maybe 5 dudes...Who make any of the servers that do well. Like, if I recall, Extalia was Zero? He started making ps's as a teen, and used the monies he got from it to fund his whole college education! He eventually handed it off to a few of the core dudes/friends he'd worked with from the start, and things went steadily downhill from there.
Were you playing Extalia when that big drama happened where a longstanding gm/admin(?) was revealed to have spawned items to sell on the black market, and also skeeved on young women for pics? I'm pretty sure that was David (probably even his IGN, I think). Dat was wiiild.
I actually remember Mint!
A major problem with modern MMOs (and with MapleStory Private Servers), is that we have so much information available. Back in 2007/08, a lot of us were dumb kids/teens with no real resources of how to play the game. Now-a-days, we have so many "optimized" guides on how to do everything and save time, there's no reason to have a community until you're at the end game. It really sucks when the magic of MapleStory was the community and the vast majority of players were around the 30-80 levels. Very rarely you'd see anyone past 100 unless they were AFK in Ch.1 Henesys.
I was a Bera player too back in the day, so maybe we crossed paths at some point.
@@Altais_ It's really simpler than that. OG maple is just not a good game. There were many terrible systems, party quests were a horrendous way to grind, and it was horrifically unbalanced. People just looked past that because chatting to somebody else online was still novel, and maple was a pretty good way to do that because it has always had stunning graphics.
Modern maple is actually much better about socialization. Once you get past Lotus and Damien (which is pretty early on), you're going to have a very bad time progressing further if you can't find a squad to boss with consistently. Old maple on the other hand never actually gave you a reason to meet other people. Besides holy symbol I guess, but I don't think "priest AFKs without saying a word while you do all the work" really counts as socializing.
@@Altais_ I forgot to mention this part too, but new maple is really, really, really complicated with a ton of interweaving upgrade systems. It's far too complicated to learn how to get stronger on your own from scratch. It's honestly a problem with the game, but it's a problem that forces you to socialize because you need to ask people who are farther in the game than you are.
@@Mezmorizorz Yeah that's why thousands of people still play it 20 years later because it's bad.
Socialization in old school maple was top tier not even comparable to modern Maple... there's no way you played back in the day, so don't speak about it because you sound like you have no idea what you're talking about.
really enjoyed this video, almost 2 decades worth of lore for this game, and despite the issues and more recent controversies, I really do see this game sticking around and accumulating more stuff for the iceberg
Dude this video is amazing, I'm sharing this with everybody, classic games DESERVE to be memorialized and preserved like this. Awesome work!
This was such a fun video to watch. Thank you for all your work in making it. So much nostalgia and fun in seeing and remembering so many items from the list and learning new things. One thing that I'm guessing was cut due to time was the big rollback phase GMS faced. Those were extremely dark times and even had that meme video made about it with Walmart's old rollback commercials
This game is such a core memory for me. The feeling of old school maple just is tooo goood
Item dupe: one of the methods was to trade with another character the item to be duplicated, then crashing the channel where both are, by sending specific packets to the server, where, due to the way the server backs up the information and the packages sent by package editing, it makes a small rollback (Go back in-game time a few seconds) to the person who sent the package, keeping both characters the item.
Ecko discovered the merchant dupe and kept it private selling white scrolls for real money for months before someone started sharing it. Then he found another
@@HigherKaiju the merchant itself wasn't all too impressive its finding new ways to crash channels since shops always close down when a channel restarts or crashes it took alot out of the box thinking.
- Overflowing the wedding gift NPC with (300+ useless items) as a guest
- Overflowing the donating NPC (for the medal) which takes alot of meso
- Overflowing with search owls (nx item not sure if its EMS exlusive)
List goes on.
The layer regarding adjusted exp tables is referring to the pre-BB era where they were adjusting the EXP Curve but Ghost Ship PQ still had pre-adjustment rates. As a result, people were getting 2-3 levels per run. It let people get to 3rd job very quickly. It had to be hotfixed.
Amazing video my friend -- thanks for preserving history! This game really had me hooked as a kid and it's almost shocking how deep I got into learning these things about the game
Thanks for the content man this is the niche content I was looking for on TH-cam for years now. You hit the nail on the head. Please keep making these videos!
Maplestory was such a big part of my life from like 2005/2006-2009. Game meant so much to me and the people I met through the game meant so much to me. Even outside the game, communities like Basilmarket was such an awesome thing of community and fan made content in the early 2000s. BasilMarket and Private server would make for interesting entry in the iceberg.
I grew up playing Maplestory (joined right after Pirate was released), and this brought back so many memories. I haven't played the game in about five years now, but I still have such fond memories.
A really nostalgic video, brings back many memories about the old stuff i forgot about maple after so many years, like the PQs, the bone helmet(loved by slow warriors like me and their damn nependeaths quest), the crogs in the boat to orbis, the ultimate adventurer quest with the peridots(myself a proud UA Pally still my main to this day). Nice work dude.
Dude.. this brought back so so so so many memories that this game provided for me throughout the years.
Thanks for this! Definitely gained a sub :)
very fire video. one of the reasons I love maple is that it's such a long running game that is constantly evolving and it's really fun to see it change and see the community adapt to those changes
As somebody who has played on and off since pirates release this video has brought back so many great memories from over the years. Maplestory will always be special
Damn, really well done iceberg video. Really loved the information and overall coverage. Awesome video 🔥🔥
The amount of effort that goes into this video is crazy. It feels like youtube is actually pushing this so things looking good on the algorithm's side.
20 years of my life in 2 hours.
thank you!
This is WAY higher quality than the vast majority of informational Maple videos out there. Well done!
Oh man thanks for making this video! Brings back many memories. I remember getting on Basilmarket everyday just to see crazy screenshots or just read random forum posts.
Awesome video man, I got hit with a lot of nostalgia and learned a few things in the video. Keep it up!
Thank you for making this! So enjoyable to watch as someone who has played sporadically since 2008, I have experienced it all and appreciate it all
being part of it for 18 years now, some parts here really hit me. Will never stop playing until i die, no matter if original server or a private if the official gets shut down.
The singing of the login music was something I NEVER thought I would see anybody else in this world (I would run into) mention or even know what it's like. Every now and then I find myself singing and humming to the music, reminds me of simpler times in life. Thank you for the great content you make Togain and allowing me to experience these nostalgic feeling I haven't felt in so many years
Very nostalgic video, really got to enjoy a blast from the past with this one. Really well made too. Thank you!
Reminds me of the kinds of videos Saught used to make. I miss that guy. Hope to see more content like this in the future. We could do with content other than weekly boss mules, solo bossing, and gear videos.
Hope this blows up, good stuff!
really enjoyed this sort of content. Thank you for taking the time to do this
It really felt like going through a time machine and watching the good old days of maplestory with all its mysteries of some are solved and some others not to this day. Thank you so so much for this video, it is rare finding people nowadays who are doing maplestory content and with such a good quality of course.
As an EMS player, I remember back as a kid when normal mobs didn't have healthbars, there was no world map for Ossyria nor Ludi. I still have no idea what c/o meant in trades but I think it meant how much real money you should pay. I remember questing with so low attention span, that I had etc. items from Victoria, Ossyria and Ludi which I all "needed". Once I took a 30 minute virtual trip from Ludi to Victoria just for a friend. I remember the countless christmas events (okay, maybe 4-6) that I used to attend. Most notably, Hello 2010 and the events with the Gold Richie compass.
In the late night, I'd go into free market or Henesys and find someone to talk to. We'd queue up or just go farming, or continue talking. Before Big Bang, there was something special about having friends, real or internet friends in Maple, because you'd farm better, you could share information about good farming spots and discuss about mesos and drops, because basilmarket would be outdated anyways. Do you remember when your friend first told you about, I shit you not, Pig Beach? That was the life.
Before and after Big Bang, on times of low population, you'd sometimes see the same face you've seen before in Henesys and wonder what do they do. You'd go and say Hi to them, they'd afk, reply, or ask who are you. You'd either befriend them or not. I think that was the most magical thing of all, as corny as it sounds. I can't even remember the names anymore, but the times I spent with some random strangers on the internet are the most precious memories I have from Maple. But when your friends stop from logging in, eventually you get tired of making new friends. You quit. Maybe you return after a while.
I want to thank NEXON, WIZET and all other organizations for making these experiences possible. They made a good game with the worst possible ways. Also, whoever is responsible for the art & music department, I salute you. The music always gives me the chills and the feeling of nostalgia. But I live in this moment, and I've made peace with the fact that Maple is what it is. I think this isn't even a rant, it's more like an old man telling a story. A magical story. MapleStory.
c/o is current offer, as in how much they claim someone is currently offering to pay for the goods so they can see if someone else will pay more
57:45 Event NPC Lag was absolutely heinous, it could actually get characters on lower end PCs hardlocked.
Every single game tick MapleStory's Client would re-scan the Event NPC Sprite Files for a seasonal trigger so the NPC would change over the instant an event or holiday started.
Normal NPC files were a few hundred kilobytes to a megabyte or so. Cassandra and Gaga's files were upwards of 80 megabytes each.
It's kind of ironic how that particular map in Aqua actually caused memory leaks and lag in v62 private servers too such as old Royals, seems not even they were able to fix it easily.
I really appreciate the effort you made into this vid,
I listened to everything without skipping, was totally worth it.
U did a very good job explaining my era of maplestory and the music you put on from other games gave me so much nostalgia
Sorry if I missed this in the video, but does anyone remember the "trade quick I gotta go" scam? The scammer would offer you a trade that was too good to be true and would proceed to cancel the trade quickly over and over saying I gotta go. When the victim traded the item that the scammer needed they would unknowingly have been traded an item that wasn't what was being advertised, and it was successful because scrolls and other items had the same icon but different text properties.
Yep i remember this scam
And space space tab enter scam. Or something along them lines
Happy to still see MS videos being made, I played for a few good years straight on Broa, pre Big Bang. Came back and played the reboot server and had a blast.
the video at the end made me cry from nostalgia. well actually a lot of this did. thanks so much from the bottom of my heart for making this video.
Man I remember playing this going into high school and im in my 30s now. Thanks recommended videos. This was a nostolgia trip for sure, holy crap.
Also props for the effort you put into this video! Crazy good work
One thing you missed was lag passing (i think it was called that) where players would unplug their internet to smuggle tickets out of the ludi pq so you could insta clear stages on a fresh pq run. I think it was done to make money, because obviously if you turn in the tickets you can't smuggle them out. Anyone with knowledge feel free to reply ur info
It was used to spam ludi pq for profit, absolutely. I was mystified when someone taught me about that. Uhhh. I think the mechanic also applied to at least one other pq, can't remember which...Maybe kerning, for the 'murder nekis for (insert ticket like token) to answer questions by dropping them on the npc? Or talking with him when holding the right amount of tokens for the quiz answer?
Great video! I always thought "hands" referred to how fast you can pick stuff up. Thieves back then could always pick up items faster than other classes by a little bit. It used to take a while to pick up all the loot lol.
Mans out here rocking the Flyff music for a maplestory video. Absolutely love it
saw the length of the vid and IMMEDIATELY had to like for that amount of effort, bravo
Not sure if you remember back when Masteria first came up, fire poison mages used to exploit the boomers that would multiple after taking damage. You'd just spread poison across a few platforms and watch the boomers multiply hundreds and hundreds of times. People would kill them for like 1exp, but you as doing the most damage would get all of the exp, which made it one of the best ways to level at that time.
Then after that was said and done, we'd also sell Gallo leeches which were better exp than the nest dragons in leafre if I'm not mistaken.
As a Fire/Poison main back then, I remember this! It was a cool quirk of the Boomer mob, but implemented poorly. Honestly one of the fastest things Nexon America patched out. Haha.
i love this game, many core memories came to be while playing it.
i love to see the comunity around maplestory grow and hope the game still have many years ahead
loved the video
Well done video. I just hopped back on for a week after a near decade of not playing. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Pre big bang is golden era for sure.
I drop gamed for a little over 10 years, so it’s a little disappointing hear it summed up as “mostly a scam.” Drop game IS what you were showing in the video, I completely forgot about those scams until you showed them again.
Drop games first started being played in Kerning Hospital and then migrated to hene pot shop. Occasionally people dged in Ellinia and Lith Harbor pot shops to avoid people trying to loot the dg and they were identical to the one in henesys. I want to say drop games slowly started dying off in 2017 as more and more people had insta drop and vac hacks to crash dgs.
It kind of tied into henehoes too. Dozens of people would sit cc1 hene pot shop and hang out. Some would hop channels to watch other drop games too. Unfortunately the hene pot shop was killed with an update that made changes to the map and now no one hangs out there anymore.
Sad to see whenever I hop back on to check things out again.
This was an amazing video! If you wanted to do a followup, I have a few more you missed:
- Zakum Altar schedules
- PQ exploits/meta (smuggling, tracks, etc)
- The Guild Hack
- MMVs
- Misting maps to train
- Boomer dupe glitch
- Black sacks (or summoning sacks in general)
- Family system
- Horntail bugged/unplayable
- ITCG video game
- Maple language/Chat filter workarounds (smexy, ghey, etc)
Can provide context for all and screenshots for some. Once again, great video!
Boomer dupe glitch was wild, I would join a party with a fire poison mage and my computer was so bad that my screen would just freeze the whole time in the map, but the exp was insane, leveling 34,35,36 all in like an hour
The Horntail Bug was annoying because it was just when I had good enough gear to go on raids. Lol
Congratulations for your effort at making such a great video! Also the music choice :3
very amazing video!! was fun to be on the nostalgia train. as a 2006 maple player there were many things i didnt know. thank you!
I remember I bought my MapleStory girlfriend a maple skanda I still remember it costed me 64 million mesos which was a fortune in 2008 meanwhile I still had my 25 mill maple claw XD
HP washing is prominent for mages, especially priests because it allows them to survive with low level to no magic guard. MP pots cost a lot more mesos than HP pots so it makes sense on why this is the meta. Priests can even saves more mesos thanks to their heal skill. In addition or alternative to HP washing, HP stat gears serve the same purpose, therefore making them expensive in the game.
For assassins, to survive in HT and PB most for shadower because this class is used as a “Sed” main target in horntail
Bro you're HIM. this video is goated would love to see more like this cus I definitely remember so many of these aspects from maplestory growing up
been waiting for someone to make an iceberg, thanks for this you're the goat
1:43:41 during the original character card system well before legion. In the test servers you could put the character card into a slot on your character similar to a pocket slot. This would give you a portion of that characters total stats. They had talked to us about possibly adding a deck nx item to load all the cards into so you can wear all of your cards at once. After voicing how broken and unkillable we would be if we just slotted 5 warrior classes and 5 mage classes for basically inf hp and mp the idea was scrapped.
insane work you put into this almost 2 hour iceberg video... it was a nice walk through memory lane but I also got to learn about early game mechanics I never knew about because I was too young back then. surprised there's no mention of hidden streets
hidden streets still exist
@@unCrownD I meant that hidden streets would have been a nice entry to the iceberg
I feel like this video is pretty much the pinnacle for everyone trying to find that nostalgia hit when it comes to maplestory. I recently got reminded of the video of the guy dancing and singing to the login theme, so I looked it up and it sent me on a tangent to some of my friends about the memories of maplestory and the feelings that the nostalgia of it all brings. Had me nearly in god damn tears just remembering the times. I'm so glad when you included this in your video, and thanks to this coincidence this video probably got recommended to me. Thank you for making this.
Really appreciate you making this iceberg video! Maplestory definitely deserved it with how much content both devs and fans have developed. 😇
Very well done! No other Maple documentary can come close to this
course not, cause this one don't bring drama but is a real actual documentary
@@Dnite13 It's a flawed documentary, but a documentary nevertheless
@@xxEchoDecayxx a documentary with no drama involved
1:40:51 Maplesea's variant of the exploit included people using EES scrolls and the in game trade function.
By putting the desired item into the trade function then proceeding with the scrolling, the item was considered to be an "invulnerable" state where it cannot be destroyed. People would use this to exploit all sorts of 30% and 70% but the most notable one was enhancing pure gears using EES for dexless / lukless sins and mages as well as insane weapons built.
That's wild, ha. Was anyone at all banned when they finally 'officially' figured that out?
@@Divint12 yeah there were loads of bans but because this incident happened with the dupe glitch, the effects were very minimal and the market crashed rlly badly for related items
Man, my brother and I used to play GMS from beta to Luminous release.
We watched this together and were full of nostalgia.
Love your videos!
I've played MS on and off since I was a child (since the introduction of pirates). I reinstall it every year and play for a bit. This iceberg brought back so many memories. Being scammed during a 'Drop Game' taught me so much about not trusting strangers in the internet. Good video.
I saw the white lady of perion in the thumbnail and had to click lmao!! What a nostalgic video
1:23:49 alot of the older areas or non guide areas in GMS dont have XP updated. Nexon generally doesnt care due to it only being useful up to about level 100. If you go to where jr balrog spawns that xp is much higher than many other areas and can easily get you from 60 to 80 in like 30 mins or so. Many passover areas are like this. Like most of sleepywood or the blue ribbon pigs. Or blue mushrooms.
So you’re telling me I should be training my low level legion mules there
Before mob EXP values were changed to be loosely tied to HP values, this was super prevalent in non-KMS areas. For example, Wolf Spiders, Twisted Jesters, and Bigfoot in the GMS-original Masteria/NLC area or Female Boss in the JMS-original Showa Town. This isn't the case nowadays since all of the KMS-original content was streamlined and the non-KMS-original content was either removed or revamped to match expected KMS values.
Thank you for this stroll down memory lane haha very well put together video!
One of the SMARTEST videos I have ever seen. You took me through ToT IRL! Thank you for all of that.
i once played on a MS private server that had the white lady of perion npc, it somehow randomly spawned in one of the edelstein park maps while i was doing early game leveling
the mob spawned out of nowhere and chased me until it collided with my player model and then I disconnected from the game... I don't remember if i got banned, it happened years ago so idk anything else but it was funny that there was custom content like that on private servers
On the point of exp tables not being updated, I think it is referring to a point in time where Nexon tried to normalize exp/hp ratios among similar leveled monsters. I believe they increased hp of monsters in addition to exp. However, this only reflected KMS available monsters and when it came to GMS, we had exclusive Masteria/Haunted House/Alien content that was never updated. This meant that those monsters had better exp/hp ratios and lower hps so it became very efficient to train in those areas. Not entirely sure if this happened in official servers or private servers actually. Very hazy on the details but I do recall something like this occuring.
I think it might have been after the Big Bang update or so if I'm not mistaken, but I do specifically remember a point in time where Truckers in the now-removed Singapore/Malaysia area gave more exp than mobs around level 50 and it was a highly contested training spot. Likewise with Scarecrows and Jesters in Haunted Mansion but my memory is fuzzy on those.
@@iNLKevin Scarecrows and Jesters EXP table weren't adjusted, each of them giving 700 and 1.4k EXP along with the Alien, which used to give 3k EXP
@@iNLKevin yeah i also remember the trucker thing and it was after bigbang and before kaiser i think. I played EMS tho which got merged with gms at some point after that
@@xxEchoDecayxx Both of you are correct, truckers also retained their lvl 45 xp post-Big Bang update even though their level was dropped to lvl 28. Same with Boomer mobs from NLC and Ludibrium mobs. The very first training guide was basically "Abuse all these mobs whose exp weren't fixed"
All I remember was
1. Boomers from lvl 10 to 25
2. Truckers until 50
3. Scarecrows until 70
4. Jesters until 90
5. Clock Tower till 130
6. Lionheart Castle until 160
@@Aetolus It definitely featured in some private servers.
I return to the game once a year beacause of a new event, so I watch the game evolve overtime.
But this video man sumerized all the memories into folders.
Amazing work 👏🏼💯
great job with this video! i still think about maplestory from time to time, and i even played old school private MS during quarantine. there’s something very nostalgic about this mushroom game
This is absolutely amazing thank you so much for this, I watched the entire thing and I love it.
Also, the EXP table thing I believe was an area with Gallopera monsters that was absolutely insane EXP after Big Bang. Their EXP amount was nerfed immediately after.
MAPLESITOREEEEE!!
Would have loved to see more rumored items like the Maroon Mop on this list; as a perma beginner main there were always lingering rumors in the community that there had been a handful of them either hacked into the game, received from GMs, or obtained from gachapon, but I don't think any of these OP perma beginner weapons were ever in GMS (only other regions)
Totally agree
Amazing video brother, thank you for the time. I miss MapleStory and it's one of my favorite games of all time. I truly loved it!
awesome video! appreciate the effort putting this all together
Brings back some good memories, wish I could experience all that good stuff again.
Best MapleStory video I have seen ever so far, Beta players images made feel like I were looking at lost forbidden photos, felt an mysterious aura about them.
This transports me way back when the Maplestory chat bot would remind me that I was playing for hours and that I should take a break. Thank you for letting me able to relive such fun moments of playing this special and nostalgic MMO 💕
What a great video, as someone who started playing on 2006~ through big bang and beyond, but hasn't played in years.
Being able to learn about, and relive some of these times was amazing.
Would have loved to have seen smuggling PQ items being mentioned in the bugs/exploits section, as that was one of the most memorable, and widespread exploits that I remember growing up with, and even used, myself.
Smuggling PQ tickets, or moon bunny cakes were such great memories
Such an amazing video - taking me back to early 2000 and right back to where we are right now. I had a blast playing with my friend back in the day, we had a great community in germany too. this game will forever be in my heart, though it is not what was back then and thats not only because of the game itself but due to the fact that I don't have the same friends to play via teamspeak.
Just an incredible video. So many things I thought I'd forgotten. Such a great time in my childhood. I wished you talked about the "family" system though! Next iceberg video lol.
This one of the best MS videos of all time! Great memories unlocked. I’ve played the Brasil version of the game and we got shut down in 2012. Awesome!
Im taking a chill night and day, and this video is _perfect_ for it! Thanks so much for all the nostalgia 😍
now I subscribe, I felt like I travel back in time when you tell a story about Maplestory, I remember the market where I have to wait for others to expire and see them standing to make a store
I had a lot of the trading cards due to my dad owning a hobby shop/comic book store. I was able to get the erasers along with plenty of pets that at the time only came from the card codes. There were other things you could get to make stuff from the Glitterman in NLC as well. This video is great and I'm watching it while I play Maple after a 6 month hiatus. Great job!
thank you for this video! this was really entertaining and insightful. love learning maplestory lore
Crazy work on this video. Appreciated
I have something I've never seen anyone talk about: the "maplestory" trade feature. What i mean by this is, when in trade with anotherplayer, if you just type "maplestory" on your keyboard (not in the chat) and press enter, you would automatically ACCEPT the trade. This could be used to scam people because very few players knew about it, so you could ask people to put up their best items and tell them you could duplicate them etc.
