Neil Peart (drums) of Rush wrote the lyrics to 'Limelight' about his struggle w/ fame & fan obsession. Peart was shy, awkward and tall as a kid, and he got into playing drums as a teen cos he was good at it... He joined Rush in 1974 replacing their original drummer John Rutsey. After Rush became really popular around 1976/1977, there were fans constantly demanding their attention on tour, and the members had to adjust afterwards... Neil Peart was not comfortable talking to strangers, and couldn't handle the adulation from fans. He explained in interviews that he didn't like being praised by people he didn't know - he felt embarrassed. He would be annoyed if fans showed up at his hotel room asking for autographs or to speak to him, so he would just withdraw. This song was Peart trying to explain to everyone that his life in the 'limelight' was not what he expected it to be... and this was how he was. Rush is probably one of the smartest bands you'll ever hear. The transitions in each song are pretty much unreal. Neil was not just a drummer, he was a master percussionist and wrote just about all the bands songs. Alex is an underrated guitarist. Geddy's voice is so unique, like if you crossed Robert Plant with an elf. Geddys ability to alternate between vocals, bass and keyboards is pretty much unparalleled. With Neil gone, their legacy lives on by being heard and discovered by new generations, hopefully inspiring new bands to come.
Sorry to correct you Matthew but Neil wrote most of the lyrics once he joined the band. They all equally shared in the song writing credits for the sake of harmony much like Lennon/McCartney did and Queen in their later years. That might be what you meant but I thought it should be clarified. Cheers
Gandhi, Greta Van Ripoff. They try to come off as the second coming of Led Zeppelin, but they fail to mention that's their main influence. The band sounds good, but they need a better singer! Sounds like Geddy Lee with his balls stuck in his zipper and looks like Frodo. Dirty Honey and Wolfmother are better.
You’re on point with that. Back in the 1970s and 80s when Rush had little mainstream fame, every musician I know were huge fans of every member of this incredible band. There has not been and will never be another group like them. I’m a guitarist and I never worked with one drummer who wasn’t a huge Neil Peart fan. In the musician’s world it was just well known that Alex, Geddy and Neil were some of the best on their instruments. Seeing them live was mind blowing. To see only three guys on stage, but hear that huge wall of sound that they produced was just more than the mind can handle. I feel really bad for all of the young people just now discovering Rush, but will never get to experience them live. Thankfully we have lots of videos on TH-cam to see how amazing they were live, but nothing can capture the experience of seeing them live. Every Rush concert I went to was the best concerts I have ever been to. I saw them live 32 times and will never forget any show.

The thing that everyone leaves out is that African Americans are equally fish out of water when first experiencing rock music. Rush is truly a legendary band. The band members play multiple instruments while preforming one song. Pretty magnificent. They are honest & absolute lyrical geniuses...
Three dudes making all that sound is just astounding. Spot on. Amber, I saw the moment they really got you. You just stopped bopping and started watching them play wide eyed. Those are the moments we come for. Three amazingly talented Canadians that dominated rock and roll during their time.
It is said that Neil Peart was your favorite drummer's favorite drummer. Rest in Peace Professor, and thank you SO much for the music you gave us, and the thought provoking lyrics you wrote for us. I am 70 and have been a Rush fan since I first heard them in 1975.
Gary Lee Weinrib (Getty Lee) is the bass player. He got his nickname because of how his mother pronounced his name in her thick Polish accent. Both his parents were Polish Jews who were fortunate to survive Auschitz, Dachau, and Bergen-Belsen in their teens only top migrate to Canada after WWII. He is certainly one of the top 10 bassists in the world.
Neil Peart had a PhD in percussion. His kit was MASSIVE, with a skinny little path to get in and out. Every reactor who does Rush, NEEDS to react to the entire 2112 Overture. It's 20+ minutes long (an entire album side) but the story is great, and the mix of sounds will leave you astonished. Now, I don't know WHY, but this video reminded me of a completely different group I've wanted to recommend. The Smithereens have an incredible sound, with a heavy emphasis on bass. "A Girl Like You" & "Blood And Roses" were their biggest hits, but they did some awesome covers, including some Beatles covers. Please. Pretty please?
Slight correction: Neil Peart does *not* have a PhD in percussion. He and both his bandmates have honorary doctorates from Nipissing University. That's different from earning a PhD in a discipline.
The three of them were like brothers, When Neil Peart Passed away, Alex and Geddy (like Led Zeppelin did) said "Rush is Done! We can't do this without our drummer." If you ever get a chance to watch videos of them offstage. They all kept each other laughing.
@@Rendclaw I totally agree. Rush was a very unique band, three guys who just clicked so well for over 40 years. Rush wouldn't be the same without those Three guys. Neil was also the principle lyricist. And they were right, take Geddy, Alex or Neil out of the band, then its no longer Rush.
It was the right thing to do you can't replace anyone of them still calling it rush just doesn't work and I don't the fans wanted that either we can take the great music over their almost 50 years as a band and just enjoy it. Great song by the Canadian power trio. Neil Peart wrote it about his difficulty with fame and the lack of privacy that he felt, in dealing with it. I always loved the line about putting aside the alienation and getting on with the fascination. RIP Neil 🙏
No disrespect to Neil, but I think he was a blue-collar guy before Rush made him a multi-millionaire. I feel like at that point, you have to suck it up and accept that you are a phenomenon and that celebrity means that people will want access. I guess maybe fame just comes with a price that not everyone can accept. Regardless, we will forever remember him for his amazing drumming and lyrics.

He made a great point with the documentary, he was a huge Who fan, but he didn't try to find out which hotel they were staying at. Also, later in life, he lost his wife to cancer and his daughter to a car accident within six months and after that happened, Alex and Geddy did all the interviews and meet/greets.
The late great Neil Peart on the drums. He actually played 2 sets of drums, and thats not including the electronic drums and other percussion instruments he has. If you watch his drum solo video you will see what I mean. At one point he stands up and the kit behind him is suddenly in front of him. My favorite from Rush has always been the first one I ever heard. La Villa Strangiato.... what an epic instrumental . It's about time you listened to a prog rock song. Something in the 13 to 15 minute range... Rush 2112 the entire first side for example....
Totally agree they should wade in to deeper water. JP does a Long Song Saturday and they could do something similar. There are a plethora of great and popular longer songs.
By far the greatest band ever. I have seen them live twice. Incredible live. There will never be another band of this magnitude. Three incredible musicians. RIP Neil. Greatest drummer ever. Next month it will be 2 years since his passing. Still seems unreal.
I grew up in the 70s and 80s. I never appreciated Rush until I was in my 40s. All of those opportunities I had to have followed them in real time came and went. But I'm on board now. Amazing overall band.
The late Neil Peart is widely considered as one of, if not THE, best drummer of all time. I was fortunate enough to see him perform live several times.
My first time seeing Rush live was Signals, then Grace under Pressure. Their show was definitely not like being in studio with them, but their on stage performance was legendary. Neal with his spinning drum kit back then, waiting to electric drums, just wow. Geddy with a double bass, singing AND playing keyboard was epic.
As a huge Rush fan, I'm particularly keen and harsh on reactions to their songs, but I gotta admit yours was perfect: the adjectives and verbs and concepts you brought forward reminded me why and how much I love this band, almost brought a tear to my eye. There a hundreds of great bands out there but RUSH remains my personal favorite. Thank you guys 🤘🙏
I could see Amber about to pause just before Alex's amazing solo and was thinking "no"! She seemed to know something amazing was coming and stopped. Good choice to let it flow Amber :) Easily one of the most underrated quitarists of all time.
Next up - Working Man (Time Machine Tour: Live in Cleveland). Working Man was Rush's first hit, and a radio station in Cleveland was largely responsible for making the song a hit, and the band never forgot it. So years later, they performed an absolutely amazing version of the song live in Cleveland to thank the fans in the city that got them noticed, and you will be blown away by how good that version is. I know you already like the drummer (the amazing Neil Peart) and the bassist/vocalist (Geddy Lee). This one will make you go nuts over the guitarist (the incredible Alex Lifeson). I can't recommend it enough!
No doubt Working Man Live 2011 Official Video from Time Machine tour. Alex Lifeson is of the GOATs that have to get on the List. SRV and Healey are the GOATs but when it comes to invocation ALex Lifeson and David Gilmour of Pink Floyd live cannot be beat.

What I have always loved about Rush was its unique collective creative power ...and humility. Never following, always doing their own thing. And in concert, an incredible sense of humor and self-deprecation. ThHeir ability to recreate that sound live....a wonder!

This is my essay to people who may not know RUSH or who Neil was professionally and his contributions to the art of drumming and lyrical writing! Enjoy! RUSH is THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of the fluidity of MASTERING TIME SIGNATURES! I play drums and there are a few things that you need to know about Neil Peart’s ( pronounced PEER-T) character: First he writes the lyrics so he knows in advance what TYPE of song it’s meant to be ie ballad, driver, etc. Second he COMPOSES on the drums… like a carpenter who looks at a set of blueprints before building the object. Neil lays out a SKETCH in his mind of the VOICES of the drumset and builds the song from there. He is also a great LISTENER knowing when NOT to step over Geddy’s singing or Alex’s solos! Finally, he had perfect timing and fluidity of time changes. He said himself that it’s not about COUNTING the time signatures as much as fluid motion to change the tempo without counting: in other words it should FLOW! He hates repeating the same drum patterns in the same song meaning if he plays a fill one way the first time around he will play it differently the second time around. IE. NEIL PEART’S NARRATION ON EXIT STAGE LEFT DVD: There’s a tremendous ambiance about a concert hall…to even before a band starts playing…from the time the doors open..this place feels electric you know! That’s one of the things I like most about the road that feeling of standing in the hall when the doors open feel the excitement bursting into the hall. I must admit I feel very comfortable playing live a lot! The song satisfies and does have a modern day rocker persona about it. A very modern urban setting for that Tom Sawyer mentality and a very carefree stride and a very self-possessed kind of air. Xanadu: The question we tend to ask the most often is WHAT IF? I think of you had to simplify a motivation or simplify a moving force in our music that would probably…suffice! Red Barchetta: Well it seems to me a car is one of those handy metaphors and volumes have been written about the sociological and cultural impact of the car and what it represents but it also has a very fundamental sensual feel and it’s a metaphor for sexuality and freedom. We’ve certainly tried to guide everything by the principles that were interested in and the freedom of choice and the material we’ve been playing and expression of music that we found to be exciting would excite other people as well. If the songwriting is important and playing really well on stage is important it’s gonna make the difference between feeling good or not feeling good when I walk off stage feeling that I played as well as I can or as close to well as I can then I feel very satisfied and good for what you have done. I think there’s a very strong relation not generally recognized between drums and between words as the rhythmic structure and the phrasing and rhythm of verse is especially related and rooted in the same syncopation as drums are the same patters of thinking that overall work for me as words as well as drum beats.

So many great songs to choose from. Try Working Man, Red Barchetta, Fly By Night, Lakeside Park, Subdivisions and Distant Early Warning. Just a few of 40+ years worth of music.
Your reactions are exactly right. One of you is jamming, and simultaneously, the other is thoughtfully absorbing the awesomeness that is Rush. Love it!
Rush music is what I call, "cerebral." They make songs that have a message, beyond the normal stuff of rock bands. A pretty girl, heartbreak, hot-rod cars, are all things you hear coming from other bands. That's okay. That's the norm. But Rush comes out with songs about things, like 'living in the limelight, trouble in the forest, The choice of free will.' In this song, you see Geddy Lee singing the lyrics of the song. But he's also the bassist, and the bass you hear in the guitar solo is his doing. You see him on the bass at the end of the video though. And YES! The drummer is ALL THAT! One of the best in the business.
To be fair, they would take their turn at those things as well, if you think about it. "The Analog Kid", "Tears", and "Red Barchetta". But they put their own spin on it, and Neil's lyrics elevated the subject matter.

That's what gives Rush such longevity.. most of their songs can't be digested in one or two listens . And if you start listening regularly you pick up on something new something different each time you listen. Then when you finally put it together you can start listening to them individually even as they play together. There are so many different ways you can slice & dice their music. And they were so ahead of their time that it just doesn't get old. I've been listening to them for 40yrs and still could listen to them daily and not get tired of it .
Yes a wall of sound out of a trio. Saw them in concert when the Moving Pictures album came out and they sounded amazing. This was the first album that they started using a lot of keyboards in. Getty Lee sang, played the bass and had a keyboard set on the floor that he played with his feet.
I played "Moving Pictures" so much as a late teen the album this song comes from. 🎵all the world indeed a stage and we are merely players, performers and portrayers each another's audience outside the gilded cage🎵
Paraphrased: "I wish I could be in the studio to see them recording." Rush layers all of the different sounds, so it wouldn't be as much fun to see them record. Live however is absolutely an amazing experience to watch them play all that music right in front of you. and yes, the guitar player duplicates that sound right in front of you.... LIVE! It is an absolutely amazing experience to watch him play it exactly the same as on the record. Later in their career, he would make small changes to the solo to make it more interesting for himself, but it still sounded basically like the record.
For me Rush is one of the most creative and unique bands ever! Each of the three members are extremely skilled, the music and lyrics are complex and meaningful. Had the opportunity to see them live a few years before the drummer passed away.... I no longer wear my concert T since Neal Peart passed away. It’s sealed in a plastic bag and is now an heirloom. Seriously one of my favorite bands ever!!!
Neil Peart is a legend and one of the greatest drummers of all time. He is one of the few drummers I strive to be as good as some day. "Tom Sawyer" is my ultimate goal to be able to play on the drums. It's not that he hits the drums hard. He knows how to hit them just right. For the best sounds in drums, is more of a tap and a bounce with the sticks. If someone hits the drums hard, it will sound like crap. While tearing up the drums and wearing out the drummer fast at the same time. Also, they would be very sore, very quick. It's knowing how to hold the sticks just right for that perfect sound. You just let gravity take over with the sticks. That's how drummers are able to drum for hours and ultimately their whole lives. RIP Neil Peart! I suggest "Closer to the Heart" next.

YAY, more RUSH is so good. Love this song and this tour was one of my favorite of theirs. Watching them in studio would have been awesome , but I've seen them over 15 times in concert. My top three bands ever. I wish we could see RUSH live again but unfortunately that won't happen. RIP Neil Peart!

I met Alex and Geddy a few times but Neil had no interest in any of that sort of thing but his tour manager did get me a signed copy of his book The Masked Rider. One possession I truly treasure.

The lyrics are about how once you’ve hit it big, life gets weird and you lose your privacy. “I can’t pretend a stranger is a long awaited friend.” The studio this was shot in was LeStudio in Toronto I think. Out in the woods where much musical magic was created.
That studio was out in the woods in cottage country north of Montreal in Morin-Heights, Quebec.. it's long gone now, but many great artists created and recorded great music up there.. the seclusion and setting certainly helped make that musical magic!
This song/album (Moving Pictures) came out in my high school years. It is one of my all time favorites by them... with the first riff of the guitar it puts me in a good mood. Thank you for reacting to this. The drummer is Neil Peart. An outstanding drummer. It was very unfortunate he died last year. I had tickets to go to their 40th anniversary R40 concert tour but had to miss it due to my grandmother's funeral. Unfortunately they retired just after that concert and shortly thereafter the Neil died. If you would like to hear one of their hardest rocking songs try "Working Man" from their debut album.
Do yourselves a favor. Amber mentioned Neal Peart’s drumming several times. Load and listen to his drum solo, live in Frankfurt Germany. I promise you, you’ll never forget it or see another performance like it. The man was the GOAT of drummers.
I love seeing young people listening to classic rock and finding good music that I grew up on. Don't limit yourself to only rock music and only this time period. Tons of great music I've enjoyed over my first 62 years.
For classic Rush, "Subdivisions" would be an excellent next choice - the lyrics are very relatable to just about everyone. For newer Rush, check out "Test For Echo" or "Driven", both are excellent, hard-hitting tracks.

Been to a TON of their concerts. They are nothing short of absolutely amazing!!! For the most part, what you hear recorded is what you got live. They lived for live audiences!! Been my favorite band almost 40 years now!! RIP The Professor. Left a hole in my heart!
You are forgetting to check another great Canadian Trio. Try out Triumph "lay it on the line", "fight the good fight" for starters, best to go for the live versions
It might help to focus on an artist like you did with Queen. Take an artist like Rush and do a feature of several of their songs in a row. Then you get a deeper feel for the artist, their style, and what they are about. The more you hear the same artist, you can start to pick out their talents, niche, and sound. Maybe do artist of the week like you do with featuring a daily Christmas song.

Love you guys! I (raised in Alaska) was mining gold on Bonanza Creek (where Gold was first discovered in The Klondike) in Dawson City (the epi-center of The Klondike Gold Rush of 1896), YTC (Yukon Territory of Canada) in 1976 (i was 16) when I first heard Rush (a Canadian band). Gold Rush indeed! I haven't been the same since! I sometimes envy myself for living in those times...and as melancholy as it is, i would gladly fall face-first into it all over again. Smiling foolishly!
I discovered Rush in 1981....I was truly blessed to have grown up with what you call classic rock. Its still the only music I listen to. Rush is top 5 for me!!!
My RUSH recommendation would be to start with the four albums that are start to finish masterpieces: A Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres, Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures. For me the next tier down would be the three albums: 2112, Fly By Night, and Signals.

Geddy Lee said in an interview: "We want to be the smallest ever symphony orchestra" . Their ability to multitask , especially in live concerts is mindblowing and unsurpassed. Neil Peart (P-ear-t) is widely known as one of the best drummers in all of history, also writes the lyrics and is very deep and thoughful. Alex is a top 5 guitarist and Geddy is, imo, the best bass player ever, plus he plays keyboards, pedals and sings. The fact that they were able to get these three legends in one band is remarkable by itself. Keep going, you are getting to the good stuff!
I never comment on your vids, but I watch almost all of them. But I have to say that seeing Rush live was the best concert I have ever been to. I went to their Snakes and Arrows tour, and they dominated the stage and rocked the theatre to the foundations. They opened for themselves and it was crazy. As in, they came out and were intorduced as "the opening band called Rush". They played like 4 or 5 songs, left the stage, and then came back on as "Now for the main event... RUSH!!!". It was wild. Then they played for easily an hour and a half, took an intermission, came back played for another hour, and then did like 3 encores. Hands down the longest concert and the one with the most energy. 5/5 stars, highly recommend.
Two things you must do. 1 check out drummer Neil Peart's drum solo from Frankfurt and 2, The Garden - live. This song is the last song on their last album with Neil writing the lyrics (wrote 99% of their lyrics). But, before you react to it, read through the lyrics 1st. This song is simply amazing, lyrically, visually, and musically. And, just so you know, bassist Geddy Lee's parents are both Auschwitz concentration camp survivors. These gents are all amazing.
Neil Peart (drums) of Rush wrote the lyrics to 'Limelight' about his struggle w/ fame & fan obsession. Peart was shy, awkward and tall as a kid, and he got into playing drums as a teen cos he was good at it... He joined Rush in 1974 replacing their original drummer John Rutsey. After Rush became really popular around 1976/1977, there were fans constantly demanding their attention on tour, and the members had to adjust afterwards... Neil Peart was not comfortable talking to strangers, and couldn't handle the adulation from fans. He explained in interviews that he didn't like being praised by people he didn't know - he felt embarrassed. He would be annoyed if fans showed up at his hotel room asking for autographs or to speak to him, so he would just withdraw.
This song was Peart trying to explain to everyone that his life in the 'limelight' was not what he expected it to be... and this was how he was. "I can't pretend a stranger is a long-awaited friend..." is the line that sums it up. R.I.P. "The Professor" Neil Peart (1952 - 2020)😪

Rush is probably one of the smartest bands you'll ever hear. The transitions in each song are pretty much unreal. Neil was not just a drummer, he was a master percussionist and wrote just about all the bands songs. Alex is an underrated guitarist. Geddy's voice is so unique, like if you crossed Robert Plant with an elf. Geddys ability to alternate between vocals, bass and keyboards is pretty much unparalleled. With Neil gone, their legacy lives on by being heard and discovered by new generations, hopefully inspiring new bands to come.
Sorry to correct you Matthew but Neil wrote most of the lyrics once he joined the band. They all equally shared in the song writing credits for the sake of harmony much like Lennon/McCartney did and Queen in their later years. That might be what you meant but I thought it should be clarified. Cheers

Gandhi, Greta Van Ripoff. They try to come off as the second coming of Led Zeppelin, but they fail to mention that's their main influence. The band sounds good, but they need a better singer! Sounds like Geddy Lee with his balls stuck in his zipper and looks like Frodo. Dirty Honey and Wolfmother are better.

Each member has millions of fans each.
You’re on point with that. Back in the 1970s and 80s when Rush had little mainstream fame, every musician I know were huge fans of every member of this incredible band. There has not been and will never be another group like them.
I’m a guitarist and I never worked with one drummer who wasn’t a huge Neil Peart fan. In the musician’s world it was just well known that Alex, Geddy and Neil were some of the best on their instruments. Seeing them live was mind blowing. To see only three guys on stage, but hear that huge wall of sound that they produced was just more than the mind can handle.
I feel really bad for all of the young people just now discovering Rush, but will never get to experience them live. Thankfully we have lots of videos on TH-cam to see how amazing they were live, but nothing can capture the experience of seeing them live. Every Rush concert I went to was the best concerts I have ever been to. I saw them live 32 times and will never forget any show.
You can tell from their head bobbing, or lack thereof, that these two can't keep up with the time changes...

Gary Lee Weinrib (Getty Lee) is the bass player. He got his nickname because of how his mother pronounced his name in her thick Polish accent. Both his parents were Polish Jews who were fortunate to survive Auschitz, Dachau, and Bergen-Belsen in their teens only top migrate to Canada after WWII. He is certainly one of the top 10 bassists in the world.
Hence the poignancy of the song "Red Sector A".

Neil Peart had a PhD in percussion. His kit was MASSIVE, with a skinny little path to get in and out.
Every reactor who does Rush, NEEDS to react to the entire 2112 Overture. It's 20+ minutes long (an entire album side) but the story is great, and the mix of sounds will leave you astonished.
Now, I don't know WHY, but this video reminded me of a completely different group I've wanted to recommend. The Smithereens have an incredible sound, with a heavy emphasis on bass.

Slight correction: Neil Peart does *not* have a PhD in percussion. He and both his bandmates have honorary doctorates from Nipissing University. That's different from earning a PhD in a discipline.

The three of them were like brothers, When Neil Peart Passed away, Alex and Geddy (like Led Zeppelin did) said "Rush is Done! We can't do this without our drummer." If you ever get a chance to watch videos of them offstage. They all kept each other laughing.
They even said that in the documentary, that without each other, Rush does not exist, basically. They would never try to play as Rush without Neil.
@@Rendclaw I totally agree. Rush was a very unique band, three guys who just clicked so well for over 40 years. Rush wouldn't be the same without those Three guys. Neil was also the principle lyricist. And they were right, take Geddy, Alex or Neil out of the band, then its no longer Rush.

Great song by the Canadian power trio. Neil Peart wrote it about his difficulty with fame and the lack of privacy that he felt, in dealing with it. I always loved the line about putting aside the alienation and getting on with the fascination. RIP Neil 🙏
No disrespect to Neil, but I think he was a blue-collar guy before Rush made him a multi-millionaire. I feel like at that point, you have to suck it up and accept that you are a phenomenon and that celebrity means that people will want access. I guess maybe fame just comes with a price that not everyone can accept. Regardless, we will forever remember him for his amazing drumming and lyrics.

He made a great point with the documentary, he was a huge Who fan, but he didn't try to find out which hotel they were staying at. Also, later in life, he lost his wife to cancer and his daughter to a car accident within six months and after that happened, Alex and Geddy did all the interviews and meet/greets.

The late great Neil Peart on the drums. He actually played 2 sets of drums, and thats not including the electronic drums and other percussion instruments he has. If you watch his drum solo video you will see what I mean. At one point he stands up and the kit behind him is suddenly in front of him. My favorite from Rush has always been the first one I ever heard. La Villa Strangiato.... what an epic instrumental . It's about time you listened to a prog rock song. Something in the 13 to 15 minute range... Rush 2112 the entire first side for example....

I grew up in the 70s and 80s. I never appreciated Rush until I was in my 40s. All of those opportunities I had to have followed them in real time came and went. But I'm on board now. Amazing overall band.

My first time seeing Rush live was Signals, then Grace under Pressure. Their show was definitely not like being in studio with them, but their on stage performance was legendary. Neal with his spinning drum kit back then, waiting to electric drums, just wow. Geddy with a double bass, singing AND playing keyboard was epic.

I could see Amber about to pause just before Alex's amazing solo and was thinking "no"! She seemed to know something amazing was coming and stopped. Good choice to let it flow Amber :) Easily one of the most underrated quitarists of all time.

Next up - Working Man (Time Machine Tour: Live in Cleveland). Working Man was Rush's first hit, and a radio station in Cleveland was largely responsible for making the song a hit, and the band never forgot it. So years later, they performed an absolutely amazing version of the song live in Cleveland to thank the fans in the city that got them noticed, and you will be blown away by how good that version is. I know you already like the drummer (the amazing Neil Peart) and the bassist/vocalist (Geddy Lee). This one will make you go nuts over the guitarist (the incredible Alex Lifeson). I can't recommend it enough!
No doubt Working Man Live 2011 Official Video from Time Machine tour. Alex Lifeson is of the GOATs that have to get on the List. SRV and Healey are the GOATs but when it comes to invocation ALex Lifeson and David Gilmour of Pink Floyd live cannot be beat.

What I have always loved about Rush was its unique collective creative power ...and humility. Never following, always doing their own thing. And in concert, an incredible sense of humor and self-deprecation. ThHeir ability to recreate that sound live....a wonder!
If you haven’t seen Xanadu Live, Exit Stage Left, have a look. You will see multitasking from them all. Really shows their talent. From, I believe, 1981. Alex and Geddy with double neck guitars, Neil has a Ton more than just the drums. Really an experience. These guys are Masters of their Craft!

This is my essay to people who may not know RUSH or who Neil was professionally and his contributions to the art of drumming and lyrical writing! Enjoy!
RUSH is THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of the fluidity of MASTERING TIME SIGNATURES! I play drums and there are a few things that you need to know about Neil Peart’s ( pronounced PEER-T) character: First he writes the lyrics so he knows in advance what TYPE of song it’s meant to be ie ballad, driver, etc. Second he COMPOSES on the drums… like a carpenter who looks at a set of blueprints before building the object. Neil lays out a SKETCH in his mind of the VOICES of the drumset and builds the song from there. He is also a great LISTENER knowing when NOT to step over Geddy’s singing or Alex’s solos! Finally, he had perfect timing and fluidity of time changes. He said himself that it’s not about COUNTING the time signatures as much as fluid motion to change the tempo without counting: in other words it should FLOW! He hates repeating the same drum patterns in the same song meaning if he plays a fill one way the first time around he will play it differently the second time around. IE. Rolls down the toms the first time around and triplets or quads (all four limbs) the second time around. In short there will NEVER be another like him on planet earth 🌍 🌏 🌎! REST IN PEACE PROFESSOR!

We lost Neil Peart on January 7th 2020 to brain cancer! There’s a tremendous ambiance about a concert hall…to even before a band starts playing…from the time the doors open..this place feels electric you know!
That’s one of the things I like most about the road that feeling of standing in the hall when the doors open feel the excitement bursting into the hall.
I must admit I feel very comfortable playing live a lot!
The song satisfies and does have a modern day rocker persona about it. A very modern urban setting for that Tom Sawyer mentality and a very carefree stride and a very self-possessed kind of air.
Xanadu: The question we tend to ask the most often is WHAT IF? I think of you had to simplify a motivation or simplify a moving force in our music that would probably…suffice!
Red Barchetta: Well it seems to me a car is one of those handy metaphors and volumes have been written about the sociological and cultural impact of the car and what it represents but it also has a very fundamental sensual feel and it’s a metaphor for sexuality and freedom.
We’ve certainly tried to guide everything by the principles that were interested in and the freedom of choice and the material we’ve been playing and expression of music that we found to be exciting would excite other people as well.
If the songwriting is important and playing really well on stage is important it’s gonna make the difference between feeling good or not feeling good when I walk off stage feeling that I played as well as I can or as close to well as I can then I feel very satisfied and good for what you have done.
I think there’s a very strong relation not generally recognized between drums and between words as the rhythmic structure and the phrasing and rhythm of verse is especially related and rooted in the same syncopation as drums are the same patters of thinking that overall work for me as words as well as drum beats.
Neal Peart is one of the greatest drummers of all time...admired by his peers. ;)

Rush music is what I call, "cerebral."
They make songs that have a message, beyond the normal stuff of rock bands.
A pretty girl, heartbreak, hot-rod cars, are all things you hear coming from other bands. That's okay. That's the norm.
But Rush comes out with songs about things, like 'living in the limelight, trouble in the forest, The choice of free will.'
In this song, you see Geddy Lee singing the lyrics of the song. But he's also the bassist, and the bass you hear in the guitar solo is his doing. You see him on the bass at the end of the video though.
And YES! The drummer is ALL THAT! One of the best in the business.
Neil is so good that I find myself laughing at some of his parts. Not the normal reaction tho talent or greatness, but he was so good it’s ridiculous.
To be fair, they would take their turn at those things as well, if you think about it. "The Analog Kid", "Tears", and "Red Barchetta". But they put their own spin on it, and Neil's lyrics elevated the subject matter.

That's what gives Rush such longevity.. most of their songs can't be digested in one or two listens . And if you start listening regularly you pick up on something new something different each time you listen. Then when you finally put it together you can start listening to them individually even as they play together. There are so many different ways you can slice & dice their music. And they were so ahead of their time that it just doesn't get old. I've been listening to them for 40yrs and still could listen to them daily and not get tired of it .
Yes a wall of sound out of a trio. Saw them in concert when the Moving Pictures album came out and they sounded amazing. This was the first album that they started using a lot of keyboards in. Getty Lee sang, played the bass and had a keyboard set on the floor that he played with his feet.

Paraphrased: "I wish I could be in the studio to see them recording." Rush layers all of the different sounds, so it wouldn't be as much fun to see them record. Live however is absolutely an amazing experience to watch them play all that music right in front of you.
and yes, the guitar player duplicates that sound right in front of you.... LIVE! It is an absolutely amazing experience to watch him play it exactly the same as on the record. Later in their career, he would make small changes to the solo to make it more interesting for himself, but it still sounded basically like the record.
For me Rush is one of the most creative and unique bands ever! Each of the three members are extremely skilled, the music and lyrics are complex and meaningful. Had the opportunity to see them live a few years before the drummer passed away.... I no longer wear my concert T since Neal Peart passed away. It’s sealed in a plastic bag and is now an heirloom. Seriously one of my favorite bands ever!!!
Neil Peart is a legend and one of the greatest drummers of all time. He is one of the few drummers I strive to be as good as some day. "Tom Sawyer" is my ultimate goal to be able to play on the drums. It's not that he hits the drums hard. He knows how to hit them just right. For the best sounds in drums, is more of a tap and a bounce with the sticks. If someone hits the drums hard, it will sound like crap. While tearing up the drums and wearing out the drummer fast at the same time. Also, they would be very sore, very quick. It's knowing how to hold the sticks just right for that perfect sound. You just let gravity take over with the sticks. That's how drummers are able to drum for hours and ultimately their whole lives. RIP Neil Peart! I suggest "Closer to the Heart" next.

YAY, more RUSH is so good. Love this song and this tour was one of my favorite of theirs. Watching them in studio would have been awesome , but I've seen them over 15 times in concert. My top three bands ever. I wish we could see RUSH live again but unfortunately that won't happen. RIP Neil Peart!

I met Alex and Geddy a few times but Neil had no interest in any of that sort of thing but his tour manager did get me a signed copy of his book The Masked Rider. One possession I truly treasure.

I just lost one of my brothers to cancer on Monday. He was a huge Rush Fan!! That is most likely why I am as well ... I grew up with their music from about age 6 or 7 on up!!

The studio this was shot in was LeStudio in Toronto I think. Out in the woods where much musical magic was created.
That studio was out in the woods in cottage country north of Montreal in Morin-Heights, Quebec.. it's long gone now, but many great artists created and recorded great music up there.. the seclusion and setting certainly helped make that musical magic!
This song/album (Moving Pictures) came out in my high school years. It is one of my all time favorites by them... with the first riff of the guitar it puts me in a good mood. Thank you for reacting to this. The drummer is Neil Peart. An outstanding drummer. It was very unfortunate he died last year. I had tickets to go to their 40th anniversary R40 concert tour but had to miss it due to my grandmother's funeral. Unfortunately they retired just after that concert and shortly thereafter the Neil died. If you would like to hear one of their hardest rocking songs try "Working Man" from their debut album.
Do yourselves a favor. Amber mentioned Neal Peart’s drumming several times. Load and listen to his drum solo, live in Frankfurt Germany. I promise you, you’ll never forget it or see another performance like it. The man was the GOAT of drummers.

I love seeing young people listening to classic rock and finding good music that I grew up on. Don't limit yourself to only rock music and only this time period. Tons of great music I've enjoyed over my first 62 years.
For classic Rush, "Subdivisions" would be an excellent next choice - the lyrics are very relatable to just about everyone.
For newer Rush, check out "Test For Echo" or "Driven", both are excellent, hard-hitting tracks.

The drummer is widely considered the GOAT, so y’all are getting it. All the guitar solos are like that with Rush, they’re all hugely talented, and yeah, lyrics are essential.

Agree! I didn’t catch the distinction between those who wish to “seem” and those who wish to “be” til decades later after watching an interview with Neil... so much nuance and meaning in all of their lyrics, it’s a different song at different stages of the listeners life

Been to a TON of their concerts. They are nothing short of absolutely amazing!!! For the most part, what you hear recorded is what you got live. They lived for live audiences!! Been my favorite band almost 40 years now!! RIP The Professor. Left a hole in my heart!

It might help to focus on an artist like you did with Queen. Take an artist like Rush and do a feature of several of their songs in a row. Then you get a deeper feel for the artist, their style, and what they are about. The more you hear the same artist, you can start to pick out their talents, niche, and sound. Maybe do artist of the week like you do with featuring a daily Christmas song.

Love you guys! I (raised in Alaska) was mining gold on Bonanza Creek (where Gold was first discovered in The Klondike) in Dawson City (the epi-center of The Klondike Gold Rush of 1896), YTC (Yukon Territory of Canada) in 1976 (i was 16) when I first heard Rush (a Canadian band). Gold Rush indeed! I haven't been the same since! I sometimes envy myself for living in those times...and as melancholy as it is, i would gladly fall face-first into it all over again. Smiling foolishly!

I discovered Rush in 1981....I was truly blessed to have grown up with what you call classic rock. Its still the only music I listen to. Rush is top 5 for me!!!

My RUSH recommendation would be to start with the four albums that are start to finish masterpieces: A Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres, Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures. For me the next tier down would be the three albums: 2112, Fly By Night, and Signals.

The lead singer/bassist/keyboard player is Geddy Lee. His first name is Gary, but his mother, born and raised in Poland, said it “Geddy”, so of course that’s what everyone calls him.
BTW, his parents met as teenagers when at Auschwitz during WWII. His father sought her out after the war and, well, there y’are.

Geddy Lee said in an interview: "We want to be the smallest ever symphony orchestra" . Their ability to multitask , especially in live concerts is mindblowing and unsurpassed. Neil Peart (P-ear-t) is widely known as one of the best drummers in all of history, also writes the lyrics and is very deep and thoughful. Alex is a top 5 guitarist and Geddy is, imo, the best bass player ever, plus he plays keyboards, pedals and sings. The fact that they were able to get these three legends in one band is remarkable by itself. Keep going, you are getting to the good stuff!

They were great in concert back in the day. One of the best, besides Eric Clapton and Van Halen.

Im a 44yr old Canadian I was brought up on Rush I still find it hard to believe sometimes that this music comes from 3 people. Amazing.
I never comment on your vids, but I watch almost all of them. But I have to say that seeing Rush live was the best concert I have ever been to. I went to their Snakes and Arrows tour, and they dominated the stage and rocked the theatre to the foundations. They opened for themselves and it was crazy. As in, they came out and were intorduced as "the opening band called Rush". They played like 4 or 5 songs, left the stage, and then came back on as "Now for the main event... RUSH!!!". It was wild. Then they played for easily an hour and a half, took an intermission, came back played for another hour, and then did like 3 encores. Hands down the longest concert and the one with the most energy. 5/5 stars, highly recommend.
Two things you must do. 1 check out drummer Neil Peart's drum solo from Frankfurt and 2, The Garden - live. This song is the last song on their last album with Neil writing the lyrics (wrote 99% of their lyrics). But, before you react to it, read through the lyrics 1st. This song is simply amazing, lyrically, visually, and musically. And, just so you know, bassist Geddy Lee's parents are both Auschwitz concentration camp survivors. These gents are all amazing.
