The amazing thing about RUSH is that they sounded just as good live as they did in the studio.
I would argue they sound even smidgen better live than studio :) - either way, a incredibly talented musicians.... RIP Professor

This song is full of lines that speak to the soul of the teenage misfit, but the one that always stuck with me was the last one:

As a teen in the 80's it was very comforting to have a song that celebrated the fact that it is actually cool to be different. Rush still teaching us after all these years, RIP Professor!
There is a reason why Rush became what was jokingly known as the biggest cult band in the world, and ideas like the ones expressed in this song are what put that cult together and holds it together to this day. Nerds of the world unite! LOL

Rush and the video game Tempest... that sums up my teenage years.
That line - 'In the High School halls, in the shopping malls - conform or be cast out.' That hits hard. The 80's were awesome, but sometimes the pressure to conform down to the tiniest detail was overwhelming.

also "in the backs of cars, be cool or be cast out" has a very ominous sentiment, considering what teenagers traditionally do in the backs of cars... or what they may be forced to.
It was the same in the 70s....in Texas you were a kicker or a cool...i was in between :p

No, its not about "being canceled". The song is about being ostracized for being different. "Being canceled" happens when someone does or says something reprehensible. Being singled out because you are weird, or awkward, or a nerd, or a marching band geek, or whatever different kind of personality you have, and you won't conform, is a bad part of our society, or any society. Being canceled for being a misogynist, or a bigot, or a racist, or anti-LGBT, or antisemitic, or any other prejudiced perspective, then it is a well-deserved isolation and ostracisation.

It's why the songs are always so tight. They're written off the drums first. And he's amazing and always on time.
Deep, philosophical lyrics + three very talented musicians = extremely powerful music...
This was really the anthem for every kid who wasn't part of the cool crowd which, ironically at the time, was usually Rush fans. Fast forward 40 years and the song is still so incredibly meaningful and powerful. This will always be one of my favorite Rush songs and it's great knowing you guys embrace weirdness and share it with us. I'm right with you.
Did you know that Neil Peart composed nearly all of their lyrics. He was such a deep, thinker and commentator on the world. His critiques were on point. But he could also evoke such hope and aspiration in his messages, and this song is another example of the gift he and Rush provided through their music.

Rush is such a unified band. Each member contributes equally.
Like looking at a Swiss watch keep time. They fit together perfectly. The world is diminished by the loss of Neil.

In addition to all the usual praises for lyrics, musicianship, etc., has anyone noticed the effortless changes in meter (4/4, 7/4, 3/4)? And where Geddy and Alex are playing in 3/4, Neil is countering with a 2/4 beat? So uncommon but feels so natural. Truly brilliant.
I once heard Rush described as a "thinking man's rock and roll". I can't come up with a better description. In my mind, the most creative and talented threesome to pick up instruments.
I was 15 when this came out and I felt the lyrics were written especially for me, I have been obsessed with Rush for over 40 years and I will until I die. R.I.P. Professor, and thank you.

I was 15 years old when "Signals" came out. It took me hours and hours to learn to play the drums to Subdivisions. To this day, it remains my favorite song to play along to. That says a lot. R.I.P. Neil

I too think of ELP when i think of Rush. They too have thought provoking lyrics. Also Triumph would have to be in that mix.
Of all the Rush songs, this is the one that I feel in my bones. I think a lot of Gen Xers feel the same way. I'm from the same part of the world as Rush. I could probably tell you the stretch of road where they filmed the rows of "Cookie Cutter" houses too. Designed for maximum density, with no individuality, except perhaps the mirror image of your neighbour, there are large tracts of land where this is all you have. They still freak me out. It's like being in a maze where everything looks the same.

Being a drummer myself and influenced in my youth by Neil's drumming, I can tell you that the main reason this is probably my favorite Rush song is because of the absolute CLINIC Neil puts on for this song. It is sheer drumming perfection from beginning to end, especially that final groove at the end when he's alternating on every beat from the ride to the china. FAT jam!

Drummer, Neil Peart wrote most of all the lyrics to all of their songs 🎵 & Geddy Lee struggled at times rehearsing & learning all of those complex lyrics. The late Neil Peart was a bookworm who had a thirst for knowledge & in my opinion was a genius. One of the 10 best drummers in the world.
I'd argue one of the best two or three, at most. I certainly can't think of anyone definitively better than he was.
As a female fan of Rush who was raised in the suburbs in the 60s and 70s, the lyrics are so poignant and poetic. "Subdivisions" is the opening track off their 1982 album, 'Signals.' The message is just as relevant today as it was FORTY YEARS AGO!

Most fascinating thing about RUSH is how grounded the members were, even through their meteoric rise to fame. They never really let the fame go to their heads. Gene Simmons of KISS tells that when they were partying it up before a show which had RUSH opening for them, the members of RUSH were in their dressing room reading books and eating food while KISS were going out of their minds.
A Rush masterpiece. Our Canadian boys singing about the sadnessand emptiness of living in Toronto Subdivisions. This one hits home for many of us. Geddy and his fascination for the synthesizer. Ups to Geddy for remembering all of Niels sophisticated lyrics.

This is meaningful to so many people. I love it. For meaning, though, my favourite Rush song is "Bravado". I recommend the live R30 version from their 2004 30th anniversary tour.

"Subdivisions" basically describes my life in the 1980s. Always loved this song - even if, back then, it hit too close to home for me.
What most people don't know about Rush is that those very poetic lyrics actually come from Niel.
Xanadu, Exit Stage left live. This is a must watch to see how they can make such a big sound with no tricks and only three guys. It's mind blowing.
Believe it or not they considering looking for a fourth member to play keyboard to extend their musical range but decided the fans expected a trio and they deliver, Lee and Lifeson sometimes playing playing synth on floor pedals while playing complicated guitar part and Lee frigging singing at the same time. There will never be a band as talented as this.

The first Rush song I ever heard. Chose Signals as one of my Columbia House choices in 1982, never having heard the band. Put it on and Subdivisions started to play, and I've been in love with the band for the 42 years since.
This song captures the early 80's like no other.... it was EXACTLY like this.

As a fat kid who had tons of friends in high school but still felt like the odd man out most of the time, this song resonated with me so much when it first came out and it still feels relatable to me in my 50's.

Felt like Rush spoke directly to me...gave me a voice and confidence to 'not give a crap' what other's thought, and really helped transform my high school years (early 90's). Found friends, a rather motley crew of individuals, who loved and accepted me for me - still have most of these friends to this day (30 years later).
This IS my #1 Rush song...always will be.

Roll the Bones is a super fun one. Distant Early Warning is a great one. Red Barchetta is a favorite. There's just so many good ones. I saw them live in 1997 and then again in 2004. So good! Wish we'd had the chance to see them more than twice!

Rush Live in Cleveland- Working Man is incredible!! My neighbor, like a brother to me was a HUGE Rush fan. This song Subdivisions reflects just how he must have been feeling inside. He would be very happy watching you guys put out these great Rush reactions if he were still with us today. Gone way too young. Underrated? They are universally praised by just about every musician out there, have sold countless record while doing everything on their own terms, and have been inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame. Don't think they are underrated at all at this point.
@@carlgibbons5777 No, not "at this point." Wasn't the case for decades. While big hair bands, electronic bands, and heavy metal bands were commercializing their way to the top in the 1980s, Rush was flying under the radar. In the 1990s, Grunge hit the charts, while Rush flew under the radar. Then came all that Pop and College sound in the 2000s. Rush was finally inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2013. For a base of reference, Madonna was inducted in 2008. Rush was always that band that people knew, but didn't rave about. When Rush was inducted, other musicians said "finally."

I grew up with RUSH and yes they have a story for every song they produce.
They shaped my teenage years.
So many of us Gen Xer's feel that this song was written specifically for us. We were and still are the misfits and the dreamers. While we may have hated that awkwardness in our teens, it prepared us for today and I now cherish being the dreamer and misfit and wear it proudly as a badge of honor. Neil Peart was by far the greatest lyricist of our time. I played a lot of Tempest too!
Loved your reaction to one of my favorite Rush songs. Neil's poetic verses wrapped in early 80's Rush: Geddy's atmospheric keyboards and melodic bass runs, Neil's masterful percussion and Alex's underrated guitarwork.
07:22 "We're weird" - YES!!! You guys are great. I've been telling my daughters all their lives, "Normal is boring." Y'all nailed it - the song is about conformity and how tragic that can be for the individual.
Emerson Lake and Palmer! Amber, TAKE IT FROM ME! A LIFELONG fan (52 years) of ELP. The next song by them you MUST hear is "Knife Edge". I guarantee you and Jay will love it! It's not their #1 most popular song, but it's their most "rocking" song and not quite as "out there" or mellow as some of their songs are. After that, I would take on their EPIC called "Tarkus". It's the best song they ever wrote and I list it as one of the top 10 best progressive rock songs ever.
RUSH has been my favorite band since my brother had me listen to 2112 in Aug 76' when I came over to spend the weekend with my dad & him for my birthday. This song was our High School year book's theme song for Class of 86'. RUSH wasn't on the radio very much because most of their songs are to long for air play so they became famous from fans telling people about them. I was fortunate enough to make it to 4 RUSH concerts in my life, not nearly enough. RIP Neil Peart you are greatly missed.
Rush totally changed their approach and direction with this album, "Signals". This was the first album where they wrote on computers and you can definitely feel the difference. Alex's lead riffs were gone in favor of more textural sounds and he took a backseat to the keyboards which played the lead on much of the album. That being said, this is part of what made Rush so great. They could completely change direction and stay true to themselves without ever selling out. Great to see your reaction and glad to see you enjoyed it!
Wrote songs on computers? WTF are you talking about? They added synthesizers and sequencers, and moved away from heavy guitar dominated music, but they still wrote the same way they always did - by getting together and playing and fitting their best stuff to Neil's lyrics.

@@nealm6764 Yes, with this album Geddy began composing music on a computer with the benefit of drum machines, etc. It's how he put together music for all of their 80's albums. I'm not making this up, Geddy had talked about it many times. He was big on technology and this album changed how Geddy composed new music. The manner in which they got together and wrote was the same but the tech behind it was changing.
@@RushTrader Every interview I have ever heard where they talked about writing songs, alex and Geddy talked about how they would get together with their instruments and just play some of the stuff the came up with individually and then just see where they could go just playing together. Did they use some drum beats and synth and sequencer fill ins - probably, but that isn't writing song on computers.
@@RushTrader Post a link to a video where Geddy says anything about composing music on computers. I've seen and read transcripts of interviews in which he and the other bans members say they came up with new songs mainly by playing together.
Please don't say you couldn't sit through a full Rush album, at least not until you've listened to their concept album "2112". It tells a complete story, and it immerses you in to a uniquely Rush-style experience that is so worth finishing.
I was in HS when this song came out. It’s just one of those genius haunting songs. How Geddy on that bass💯👊🏻
The lyrics are written by Neal Peart, the drummer. He was a genius,and that is why he is known as the “Professor on the drum kit”.
This song was written for kids that felt less than everyone else in school because we didn't fit in. If you watch carefully the misfit is watching Rush on the TV set. Rush knew how it felt because they were the same growing up. Growing up Rush's music affected me more than any other band because I felt like they were talking to me.
My favorite thing about Rush is that Geddy's background or rhythm Bass is someone else's solo. Listen to what he is playing during Alex's guitar solo. Each of them is a master musician in their own right and they all jam at the same time even someone is in the middle of a solo.
Don't forget that Neil was also their lyricist. He was the source of all that poetry. While I know a number of fans look down on this period of Rush's career as being too keyboard-heavy, this is probably the song that got me into Rush in a big way. Having grown up in the 'burbs I find lines like "the suburbs have no charms to soothe the restless dreams of youth" to be particularly resonant.
C'mon Jay! Please define weird. You're not weird, you're original, unique and therefore just YOU. That's what I prefer to see. I've been "different" my entire life; the square peg that won't squeeze into the round hole. This late in life I've long since quit trying to fit. That's a lesson we all need. No one should have to fit anyone else's definition of right, cool, or what's in. Rush is one of my absolute favorite bands, and the band needed all three members. Each is/was a master musician, (RIP Neil). Neil was the primary lyricist. He was an extremely, and I do mean extremely, well-read person. From all of that he fed his interests in philosophy and sociology, which then in turn served as reservoir for the thought provoking yet musical lyrics he composed. Even his bandmates were amazed at the depth of his knowledge and output. You asked about tunes to share with your children. It might still be a bit above them, but Rush's "Closer to the Heart" could be a good one, both musically and for a learning moment about life.
If you like the deep societal and thought provoking messages from Rush, then you definitely need to react to The Trees. It rings true to today’s world as well as Subdivisions.
Absolutely my number 1 favourite RUSH song... no question.
Seeing them play this live in Calgary during the R40 tour (sadly their last) is one of my greatest memories.
Neil wrote most of the lyrics. He was an incessant reader. Wrote a book that went with the Clockwork Angels album. Ann Rand was a big early influence on all the band.

Two books, actually -- _Clockwork Angels_ and _Clockwork Lives_ . Neil changed his views gradually over the decades. He went from "Live for yourself" in _Anthem_ to "The measure of a life is a measure of love and respect -- the way you live, the gifts that you give" in _The Garden_ .

The deep heart felt lyrics of their songs helped me understand so much going through my days of school. I could not have made it without their wisdom and insight of the agnst of youth.

Great song. Love Alex singing "Subdivisions." The contrast of his deep vocal with Geddy's higher pitch is fantastic.
It's actually Neil's voice providing the "Subdivisions" on the recording, Alex just mouths it in the video. It is very cool. Neil also provided the "Attention all planets of the solar federation, we have assumed control" from 2112.

As great a drummer. He was equally a great songwriter

I first heard them in the late 70’s. Was blown away.
Remember Neal. Awesome drummer, wrote the lyrics and instead of getting on the tour bus would ride his Harley from town to town. My hero.💪
This was where synths started to become prominent in their music. A lot of fans weren't thrilled about it but luckily I never had a problem with what's become known as their 'Synth Era'. After a few albums Geddy, Alex and Neil put them in the backseat (or even out of the car entirely) and they hit even harder than ever. Me, I just love me some Rush!
"Subdivisions" very quickly became a fan favorite. Everything about the song works. The music, lyrics, drumming, composition... it all makes a great song. I think it was in Radio City Music Hall when I first saw them perform it. We all loved it, and it stayed one of our favorites since then.
I think you can make it through an entire Rush album. It’s a labor of love ,and the rewards are endless. You could start with “2112” . That’s where I started…
..."we would be boring if we were all the same." So true. Why does anyone think that being all the same would make the world a better or more interesting place? Different landscapes, animals, plants, flavors, music, art, ideas is where it's at. Create, invent, innovate, do your own thing. We are watching. We need it.

If you guys enjoy Rush, you will probably enjoy the police as well. Both bands had similar styles.. fantastic writing, multi-instrumentalists, and great drummers.
They've done a couple of Police songs; I'd love to see them do more. "Synchronicity II," "Don't Stand So Close To Me," "Wrapped Around Your Finger," or "King Of Pain" would be great!
@dianemoon7839 I can't keep up with these guys.. I subscribed way back when Amber joined the channel on the regular, but 3 songs a day is a lot of viewing the push through. Their reaction catalog is huge now.

Probably my favorite Rush song. Neil’s drum playing is so amazing I can air play it all day long. There is no other like Neil RIP. Check out the live version of Xanadu for more incredible musicianship by Rush.

I have long said that Alex is the most underrated and underappreciated guitarist in rock and roll. I, like you guys, love his backing vocals....especially when he says "Subdivisions".
Rush is also one of the two best concerts I have ever been to. The lasers in their concerts were insane.
You guys are some of the classiest TH-camrs on the channel. You are an immense blessing to me.
Rush during their keyboard era was the finest IMO. It added so much depth.
