Alex Lifeson said in an interview this is his all time favorite guitar solo. He is so under appreciated for his contribution to rock guitar. His massive open chords and carefully crafted solos are as much a part of the sound of Rush as any other. Listen to how he creates an atmosphere to match the theme of each song. In Red Barchetta you can feel yourself behind the wheel of the car as he incinerates his axe. In Free Will you can feel the chaos of the universe. In Spirit of the Radio you can feel the high frequency FM waves spiking away from the transmitter. A master.

Alex Lifeson's chords were absolutely prophetic to modern rock. The open but dissonant chords are heard everywhere now in Midwest Emo, Math Rock, Shoegaze and if you wanna do a bit earlier, some nu-metal as well. Basically the FEEL of those chords was hugely inspirational for a lot of modern artists.
I always felt like the 'happy' sound of the song was a deliberate foil for the lyrics. It is them giving a happy fake smile with the music while the true feelings are underneath in the lyrics.

Always loved the vibe to this song and aware of the back story to it, but the juxtaposition of melody, lyrics and lead break as only just crashed down on me after thirty odd years - COOL
Yeah, but the chorus shatters all of it, like a warning and Alex's solo destroys it all _like a crying in solitude. The end is sad as well.
Really like how the guys focus pn Neil's lyrics. The musicianship is stellar, and the lyrics are brilliant.

The best band in history.
Back in the day....40 years ago...we would have RUSH cranked up in the weight room....we honestly had know clue how good they really are. 500 years from now the captain of the space explorer will be tapping the control panel to RUSH.
They were Canada's Led Zeppelin. All three of them, virtuosos. Unbelievable talent. So glad i got to see them on their last tour.

Very very few bands have released an album where every song is a masterpiece.......Rush did it more than once.
Geddy Lee's bass tone is so freaking awesome.
The way he plays is incredible, and to do triple-duty on the keys, bass, and vocals is amazing. And it's not like the parts he's playing are easy, so to play them and sing at the same time is pretty impressive. To do one or the other well is an achievement on its own, but both at the same time. Cmon man, lol.

I remember when I found out I married the perfect wife. Peggy came into our home theater room full of our teenagers hs friends playing rock band about 12 years ago, and she told them she’d sing any Rush song they could unlock. I never even knew she liked them. What a great night for our family and we all connected over singing Rush. I wish peace to Rush nation and RIP Neil, you’ll live on for many generations

That's been my favorite Rush song since it came out. I wasn't aware that Neil Peart considered it one of his most important songs because it was his announcement to the world that he was going to start writing more personal songs.
Monumentally underrated album and the drums on that song are amazing.

I've been listening to Rush since the '70s, and I've always known them to be "musical mavericks, geniuses, and revolutionaries", with a sound so layered and epic, resulting in a flawless sound with more than poetic lyrics, I never thought them to be "cheesy" or "Disney-like". That's far from what they truly are.

I'm a huge Rush fan but I'll admit they do sometimes sound a bit cheesy. I mean remember Tears?

I think better examples may be the cheesy (ngl kinda fun still) rap section of Roll the Bones, or Tai Shan (I think Geddy and Alex are both on record disliking that one too)
The lyrics are deeper than the first read.. Neil was an avid reader on a multitude of topics: politics, sci-fi, philosophy.. it all comes through in his lyrics
Too often Geddy Lee gets overlooked for how good he is on bass.

Overlooked one of their best lines of lyrics: "All the world's indeed a stage, and we are merely players, performers, and portrayers. Each another's audience, outside the gilded cage." RUSH is the thinking man's rock band!

It's a paraphrase of the opening of one of Shakespeare's more well-known soliloquys. From 'As You Like It', Act 2. The concept of the world as a stage predates The Bard, going back to the ancient Romans.

The joyful sound represents , the joy of living something that are only dreams of most. The lyrics and guitar solo, are about the discomfort of holding on to your own self and not molding to the expectations of everyone else! So a mix of joy and discomfort! A balance between the two.

The lyrics are Neil's perspective on life and fame, but the biggest line is "I cannot pretend a stranger is a long awaited friend". Showing how shy he really was to his fans.
That line is so true. Imagine you are a celebrity and all these fan people think they know you so well. So well that they think they are your friend. I don't even know you, so you are not my friend.
Hearing someone really analyze and critique this song is so eye-opening for me. I was raised on rush and other rock artist of the time. I heard this so many times as a child that i know the words without even realizing it. I never thought to look into their music and study it as something more than an element of my childhood. Rush is incredibly talented. Their music is beyond beautiful, and i never looked at it as more than my dad’s music when i was a kid. Rush has become a huge part of my life and my brother’s life, and we adore their music. When i listen to rush now, i listen for the different instruments and the transitions and try to truly appreciate their talent.
It’s been 4 days since we found out Neil left us. I’m still in tears. 😭

Every time I go to listen a Rush tune and hear Neil's drum lines and read the comments of how many lives were touched by these three men's music.... I cry.....every time....I think of how they gave voice to the way I thought and felt....like an outsider looking in on a society that had and still has no place for me..... I think of the first time I heard The Professor's drum work on Tom Sawyer.....you left an indelible mark on this world and many people in it! Rest in peace Sir! And peace and hugs and love to all of my fellow RUSH fans.

I am a pastor, and I LOVE "Limelight." When you are relentlessly expected to, and you even get paid to, SEEM sincere, sometimes it's hard to really BE sincere. I'm about 100% certain that that's not what Neil Peart was after when he wrote this song, but I groove on it. "Living in the limelight, the universal dream, for those who wish to SEEM. Those who wish to BE must put aside the alienation, and get on with the fascination, the real relation, the underlying theme." The lyrics, the lyrics... and that's not even thinking about the drums. RIP, Neil.
Christopher Gudmundsson I first listened to RUSH when was a teen in youth groups. They were known as “”Royal Union of Satans Helpers” in my youth circles. Then I heard Subdivisions. It was the point where I simply didn’t care what people thought. It was so honest, spoke right to the reality of teenage life. 38 years later, I still love both Jesus and RUSH
@@Brianbscotty I'm agnostic so I can't speak about about how Rush were felt in Christian circles, but my two best friends are deeply rooted in christianity and we shared our love for Rush in High School. Subdivisions spoke to me as a cast out at that age in time. It's almost like I wish we all had a forum to come together at that young age to know we weren't all alone.

Alex always plays "necessary" solos. Every note is precise and movement is calculated. He doesn't masturbate over his guitar like so many others do. He does that, yet remains one of the most creative guitarists in the business!
There is a great video by Alex explaining hi history as a guitarist, his career with Rush, and step by step visuals and explanations (some oddly funny, knowing what a great guitarist he is) on how he plays Limelight. I am not a guitarist )or musician) but i just loved it. He has 2 other videos (Tom Sawyer and Spirit of Radio - that one lost some sound tho URG!)

That solo is one of the best examples of expressing emotion through music I’ve heard in rock, metal, etc.
It’s crazy how poppy this song is, yet the time signature jumps all over the place. I can’t think of another song this radio friendly that jumps around so much in terms of beats per measure. ❤️

When Rush is at their best they play four songs at once: the band’s composition and each individual instrument’s melody. So many times I’ve lost myself in a song that way and needed to rewind!

In high school, I was in jazz band with this kid james and his dad was the drum coach. His name is Chad wackerman and apparently he did a drum battle with Neil once.

For a bit of context: this song evolved from Neil Peart’s inherent introverted personality and his inability to easily connect with the fans who adored him... he stated in an interview that he was never comfortable with it and this song was his attempt to express what he felt. A direct quote from him was “extroverts will never understand introverts”

My absolute favorite!
I was 11 years old when this song came out. At the time, NO ONE sounded like them. Their lyrics, music everything. The music made your mind animate, the lyrics made you think and the whole package just lit you up. They inspired so many to sing, play guitar, drum whether it be lip singing, air guitaring or air drumming, or at best to sing or play the instruments yourself. When they say Neil Peart is your drummer's favorite drummer, that is probably the absolute truth from a gen-xer point of view. At the time, in my area (not era), they were the cat's meow. When MTV was a music channel, like solely music videos, that was like the flame starter to the fire. When you SAW them all play on the video, man, people went nuts. He was a monster drummer.

And can we talk about Geddy Lee's musicianship? In concerts, he sang while playing bass AND keyboards. Remarkable guy. His parents were Holocaust survivors who actually met as teens in the concentration camp, lost touch, then found each other again after they were liberated. Mind-blowing to think that if it weren't for the "Final Solution", this amazing band/music wouldn't exist.

This one hit me hard :( Neil Peart was an idol of mine.
All of the lyrics you refer to as “cheesy” were written by the drummer Neil Peart. The lyrics for this song was really personal for Peart because he had some sort of a phobia about meeting strangers.
He was the only one in the group that refused to do the meet and greet sessions after a concert. Being around strangers made him extremely anxious, but he became famous, so there was a bit of a dichotomy in his life because strangers are always going to approach celebrities.
The line in the song that goes, “I can’t pretend a stranger is a long awaited friend” kind of summed up his life. He claimed he couldn’t act like these strangers were his friend because he is too shy or embarrassed or he was just a snob, different people have different thoughts on his stand-offishness.
Neil Peart passed away January 7, 2020 from a brain tumor he had been suffering with the last three years. RIP Neil, you were an inspiration to thousands of drummers, many who went on to be famous drummers themselves. I know you were one of my heroes and I’m a guitar player.
I was watching a documentary of Rush in Brazil in 2012, and Neil Peart explained that he flew in on a different flight that Alex & Geddy, and because of that he missed all of the fans at the airport. I laughed when he said 'which was fine by me." Actually it was the way he said it and I could tell he was trying to be humorous.
I don't think Neil Peart had a problem with strangers in general, but rather he didn't like the excessive praise and being placed on a pedestal. During Neil Peart's hiatus he rode his motorcycle all over North and South America, and in so many small towns he would meet strangers that didn't know who he was and simply had long conversations with them.
Wolv - An awful lot of actors, musicians, and other famous people approached him about those lines. He summed it up for them and himself really well.
Personally I think they're incredibly deep lyrics, he's speaking from his own point of view. This guy never wrote 'cheesy' lyrics. GTFO

Lost In Vegas were referring to the way Geddy sang the lyrics and the melody of them not the content. I don't agree with George but I understand his argument. If there is a "pop" part of Rush, it exists in the way Geddy crafts his melodies. I find it to be a very strong piece of what they did. The light melodies with heavy lyrics cooked into a rock song...AND with all three players COMPOSING the piece not just jamming or writing a song in one session...is part of what makes Rush great. Yes, they did occasionally write from the hip but most of their work was carefully constructed. For me, this is the definition of an artist; a careful and deliberate approach to their craft. The songs just don't pop out of nowhere and they are written by all the guys in the band with each bringing his special flavor to the piece. It's brilliant. This is why there are so few (if any) unreleased tracks.

"The real relation." The music may seem corny to you, but, for those of us growing up in the 70's and 80's, they were the storytelling soundtrack of our teen years. Imagine a bunch of teens after school smoking a bowl or at a weekend party and getting our minds blown listening to these storytellers; RUSH, Led Zep, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath. I almost feel sorry for kids today. They're deep and poetic,
For me it was in the cab of a buddy's pick up truck, drinking lots of beer underage, while Rush tape after Rush tape blared from his stereo.

Different mindset from when I grew up in the '80s these lyrics are amazing. I don't know how he can compare them to Disney films nowadays. Like I said different mindset.

Huge Rush fan, but...Neil has always resented the fame and attention and I say tuff shit.. no one said they have to sell music, no one said they had to tour. They could’ve made her music for themselves and only for themselves. They didn’t need to release it to the world, but they did and there is a cost for it. There’s nothing stopping that. So don’t complain, go back to the tractor supply counter and play drums at night. You can’t have your cake and eat it too. R.I.P Neil

rmhanseniii , that’s a rather hateful take. He was an introvert who struggled with the adulation and insecurity, which is surely what played a large part in making him strive to be both a great drummer and lyricist. All the accounts of what kind of person he was all talk about what a genuinely good person he was. Check out his books (Ghost Rider, in particular) to gain more insight into who he was as a person and what he went through.

I like to think my taste in music is diverse as I like hip hop, metal, funk, EDM, etc. When I saw Rush live it changed live music for me... Everything from the wall of sound and visuals, it was nothing short of amazing. I was blown away that 3 guys could put out so much sound. This was like early 2000s. Best concert i've ever been to by far.
I love how you guys were able to "upgrade". Blessings to you. But most of all I sincerely appreciate your honest reaction to everything that is good in music.

I think that you speak for all of us who grew up listen to and loving Neil Peart and RUSH. Many flash back memories of Jr high school and high school and there is a certain feeling I get remembering those times back then when I hear RUSH. Neal is gone but he never be forgotten.
We were lucky to have him on Earth for awhile, but Neil got called back to his home planet.

@@calebjames7444 I wasn't saying anything disrespectful about Rush. But Rush isn't anywhere near the popularity of Collins. I agree that there's no comparison on skill and virtuosity, but for popularity, I bet Collins sold more copies of that single than all of Rush's singles combined.
Imagine sitting in your bedroom as an awkward 14 year old with big headphones covering your ears listening to what Rush was giving us and thinking these are my people and this is everything to me right now! So many of us have been there. It was this amazing music & lyrics at a perfect time in our lives that have stayed with us as we grow older. RIP to the greatest drummer, lyricist, and author...the professor Neil Peart!
walkalittle , that’s a great way of putting it. I remember listening to Moving Pictures when I was 14 or 15 and just being blown away. I had only been playing drums and percussion for about three years at the time and it changed my life forever.
We miss you Neil Peart! I love Rush. This whole album in incredible. Keep doing g what you do guys. Always.
