We used to check alignment of rods and dimensions. A distorted one may explain the one-sided wear. Some rods could be bent back to true but these rods look a bit tough. 71 series 6cyl and V8 are other engines I stripped and rebuilt so looking forward to that strip down. Its fascinating how the injectors are balanced, never seen it before.

thanks for the input, we will check these rods for straightness. Hoping to get some of the Jimmys out to teardown next

Rear Crankshaft seal, the crankshaft has a heat shrunk replaceable sleeve. Never seen one fall off? Has this engine had a in-situ bottom end job with just the sump being removed? How could the shells distort and become loose? One answer could be that they were distorted inwards with a vice so installation was made easier during the btm end job. Did the big end top shells drop out? Are the shells the correct size for the crankshaft? Are the correct piston rings fitted? were they stretched when installed? Could the shell wear be in part due to excess diesel getting into the oil? I get the feeling this engine has been rebuilt not very well.

This engine has been under much higher load than normal, the cylinder pressure is probably what has pounded these bearings to yield like this

Someone adjusted the Injectors incorrectly. PTI injectors are subjected to 30Ton to seal the injectors, easy to get the torque or DTI distance wrong with the result of far larger loading on the injectors and heads.

That's a good point. Too much torque clamping the injector retainer down has potentially caused this outward stress fracture? The extra cylinder heat probably didn't help either though. What is the correct adjustment and tension to retain the injectors?

That engine got dusted, I have rebuilt a few hundred of these when working at the Dealership, every time a ring breaks in half it is from dust. this is when the warranty guys in catastrophic failure ask for many pictures of specific items then tell you NO Warranty, good by.

This engine was running a lot more power than stock, we feel the cylinder heat and pressures caused this. Piston #5 has a 5mm wormhole torched through the crown and out the side. And yes, certainly no warranty on this one ;) We are rebuilding with new genuine parts though and back to sensible power levels.
